The writing on this show hit every hot spot. Enough of the Fallout world for gamers to love, and enough just plain inventive storytelling and great characters for everyone to love.
If only the Witcher and Borderlands could have turned out this way. I hope the same love Fallout, The Last of Us, Arcane, and Cyberpunk Edgerunners received will carry over to a Warhammer 40k adaptation
It’s very deep storytelling, too. The writers managed to weave in philosophical themes and profound questions that each of us confronts (whether we know it or not). Wilsig stated Lucy’s “thesis” when they met by the campfire. From that moment, her values, ethics and her core identity have been challenged non-stop by the harsh reality of the Wasteland. Her struggles are highlighted by the contrasting story of The Ghoul and by Maximus groping for his values, caught between the ideals of his religious order and the nasty reality of the hierarchy’s corrupted politics. The story so woven is subtle, and the writers aren’t hitting us over the head with moralizing. But they throw out a lot of hints! First episode, when Lucy is listing her qualifications, she says she teaches American History with “an emphasis on Ethics”. Later, when the vaulties of Vault 33 are discussing what to do with their raider prisoners, someone suggests teaching them about John Stuart Mill, the chief proponent of the philosophy of Utilitarianism, the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Lucy’s ethical guidepost is “The Golden Rule”. Many people are familiar with the Biblical formulation, the Command of Jesus to “Love thy neighbor as you love yourself”, but there is also a philosophical formulation, Kant’s Categorical Imperative. (I’ll leave it at that. Kant is pretty dry and impenetrable.) I had a literature teacher in high school who told us that Great Literature and Great Art make us ask three questions: 1) What is man? 2) What is man up against? 3) What can he do about it? This show, Fallout, does indeed ask these questions, and that’s why it isn’t just a great adaptation of a videogame, it’s freaking Great Art. The writers really swung for the fences and I think they hit it so far out of the park that the show achieved escape velocity. It’s now in orbit, far above the vacuous popular entertainments that we barely remember after a few years.
Walton Goggins, the guy playing the ghoul, has no idea about fallout, he and a few of the older actors are making sure it’s followable for people that don’t have prior knowledge 😊
I’m happy the show isn’t afraid of being silly. I was worried that the show would have tried too hard to be grim dark. But one of the reasons Fallout games are fun is the fact that it’s a goofy story. I don’t think it would be as enjoyable if I couldn’t laugh at the ridiculousness of it.
So I'm pretty sure there actually is an expirement going on in 33. "Your vault prides itself on doing the right thing" so basically their vault is behavioral expirments. So 33 is ideal since they're raised to be respectful and kind.
7:30 - one of my favourite moments of the series. We, the audience, were led so cleverly into believing the Vault 6 were up to no good. Then this. Dramatic statements, dramatic music, HUUUGE sword… tiny little sawing movements and nothing but the ridiculous *squeak* as he tries to cut her bonds. 10/10 hilarious.
How fun that after all that hullabaloo, Vault 4 turned out to be completely benign! The whole time they were being genuinely nice to Lucy and Maximus. Sure, they're a little weird. But they're not dangerous. Level 12 wasnt where they keep messed-up experiments; they were the test subjects of past experiments. After they broke free, they preserved Level 12 like a mausoleum. They told Lucy & Maximus to stay away, not because they were concealing secrets. It was just very disrespectful of Lucy to go there 🥲 Notice how none of them tried to injure Lucy when apprehending her.
Eric Estrada’s character Adam is a former NCR Ranger, which was a quasi-military police force that’s noted for wearing that distinctive combat armour and helmet. Adam patrolled the wastelands during his prime hunting raiders and outlaws like the ghoul.
@@michaelhoward142 If you watch carefully it’s implied by the Ghoul that Adam and him have history, he talked about still having lead in his body. Adam and his son were wearing ranger armour while they were scavenging.
@@jokester3076 Yes, I caught all that. Having played New Vegas years ago, I know about the NCR, the Rangers and their distinctive armor. But people watching and reacting to the TV show DON'T know all that and SHOULDN'T know it until the show wants them to know it -- which quite likely will happen next season.
@@michaelhoward142 If it’s not relevant to the plot (and I don’t think it will be), it’s fan service. It’s a little detail for fans of the game that will entertain them and give them some optional backstory about the characters. It’s very much in the Western genre, and it’s also an homage to a scene in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, which is an Easter egg for cinephiles, but not necessarily gamers. All this superfluous detail is texture, and this show is full of textures. It luxuriates in them.
The sombre music from the beginning was the title theme from Fallout 3 game, and the scavengers are wearing scavenged New California Republic ranger armour. 13:21 - the Red Rocket gas station is where you find Dogmeat in Fallout 4

The radio tower playing fiddle music and saying that people complain about it is a reference to Fallout 4. One faction, the Minuteman, have a radio beacon that plays such music all the time, a lot of players were complaining about it since it kinda didn't fit the mood of the other ingame radio stations playing the more typical Fallout songs ^^
I absolutely love your reactions to this show! I don't know if it is on your radar or not, but I highly recommend Ella Purnell's other show, Yellowjackets, it currently has 2 seasons and is in production for season 3 right now.
This is so great. This is what reaction channels are all about having fun with you. All watching it like it’s the first time. Super fun. Love the show. Love you guys. Fun times
Great reaction ladies. One more to go🙂. May I suggest an older tv series for you ladies, Spartacus (TV series started in 2010 ) with a total of 4 seasons. 1 - Spartacus - Blood and Sand (2010). 2 - Spartacus - Gods of the Arena (2011). 3 - Spartacus - Vengeance (2012). 4 - Spartacus - War of the Damned (2013). Season 2 is a prequel to season 1, due to the main actor Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. So they needed time to replace the main actor. I believe you ladies will be blown away that this was actually a tv show. Since I am not into anime, I will see you in the next series, after this finale of course. Lol.
You already that know Ella Purnell gave Jinx her voice, but she also voiced another badass animated character in Star Trek Prodigy (female main role). The show was originally made for kids, but treats its audience like adults and doesnt shy away from getting dark sometimes. You dont need any knowledge of other Star Trek content to enjoy the story of both seasons.
