It's crazy how easy it is to have a high sodium diet. It takes no effort. Lately, I only season my food with both fresh and granulated onions and garlic, in addition to a few herbs/spices. I'm pleasantly surprised at how good my food's been tasting.

Excess consumption of either is the only 'enemy' there is. You're talking about 150 years ago. What was the average meal composed of? How frequent was the consumption of meat, salted or otherwise? What else did they eat? What was the difference between the well off and poor, diet-wise? What was the activity level? What was the mortality rate? What were the common chronic conditions afflicting these people? So many different factors and variables are present.
@@renge9909 yeah, so basically tge culprit isnt salt its all those other factors. Not enough exercise, sedentary life cycle, to much sugar, not enough potassium etc.

This is rather rare, salt is everywhere. Sodium depletion, besides some rare diseases, will more "commonly" come from extreme exercise, such as in marathons and whatnot. But even there people will have a some risk of over-hydration, if they drink too much water or sports drinks fearing dehydration.
@@imzjustplayin not actually that unrare. FDA intakes have been shown to cause a deficiency in salt, actually. But yes, higher potassium intake is crucial
Not enough salt is deadly. I know. I almost lost my father because his doctor put him on a low to no sodium diet. Salt helps keep your body hydrated. Balance is always best.
Same. I went low sodium because of videos like this and got the sickest I'd ever been my entire life. Cramps every say. Now I take between 2500 to sometimes over 5000 and no more cramps and random pains. I'm also an athlete and more salt helps me sweat and have longer endurance.
I went on low sodium 40 years ago. It is the CHANGE that has to be properly managed. It took 4 years to gradually reduce the salt intake. It is impossible to imagine a person not getting sufficient salt per se. But if the kidneys have been used to excreting the excess salt and you suddenly stop then you can easily run to salt deficient. As I said, I don't use salt but even then I look at my foodstuffs and I still reach recommended levels easily without adding any salt to anything ever.
My father died, because of his salt use. It held fluid in his bloodstream and his bloodstream was so waterlogged...the heart could not pump the blood. His heart was starved for nutrients. His weight would fluctuate over 100 pounds. He had to go into the hospital regularly to drain the water. The RDA now is 2200 mg. Fifty years ago it was 400-500 mg. This increase occurred, because the food industries needed to sell more products. Processed foods are overloaded with sodiium and the human body was not designed to eat 2200 mg daily. In truth, human beings were not designed to eat processed foods.
Fifty years ago the RDA for sodium was 400-500 mg. Human beings were not designed to eat processed foods with their excessive amount of sodium. If people ate more unprocessed fruits and vegetables their health would improve.. Americans spend more on medical care and are among the sickest in the world, because of the Standard American Diet.
I avoided salt due concern for my kidney. Now being a keto diet, i decided to up my salt to 12grams. i feel wonderful and clearheaded! Guess we on keto need more.
The importance of salt long time ago was not because of high consumption. It was because salt was used a lot to preserve foods (no refrigerators!). I once lived in an old house and there was a specially crafted brick container in the basement. People back then used it to stack meat in it between layers of salt. And they rinced the meat before use.

Never explained how a craving for junk food means you eating too much salt when really the craving can be explained by salt deficiency. 6) Muscle cramps can be caused by too much salt or too little salt or too little water. It is more to do with the salt to water balance in the muscle. Alcohol can also throw out your salt to water balance.
Now that you've done a video on Intermittent fasting... do one on keto. We actually require more salt on this life method, and don't need to fear salt. (sea salts are better)
Stephen Hill Lol, thank you, but no (regarding always being thirsty). I was saying specifically after a lot of salt may be consumed. Isn't that bad though? By consuming more water in response, you're saturating your body with even more water when in fact that's precisely the one and only problem with too much salt. I guess the question would therefore be, what would the right thing be to do in that circumstance?
"incredibly expensive" might be a little much. It's not as if most people could not afford some salt in their food. The thing is that it was a vital commodity back in the days before refrigeration because salting and (and pickling) foods was the main method of preservation, so it was very useful and valuable both in it's direct practical application and as a trade-good. We're still talking about fairly large quantities though. You don't salt a barrel of fish with a few spoonfuls.
Remember the experiment in grade school when they added salt to water and it conducted electricity and rang a bell or whatever. Well, taste buds transfer signals via electrical impulses hence food tends to taste better with a bit of salt. Thanks for the video.
Natural salt is perfectly fine. Commercial salt isn't. Commercial salt has glass in it. The glass runs through your veins cutting you, your body repairs said cuts with cholesterol. This happens over and over, then they tell us we have too much cholesterol.

Despite barely having any of these signs I know that I am definitely eating too much salt. I can't help it though, especially in summer I am literally craving for salt. Once I even bought the overpriced chips packs at a train station just so I could lick the salt off them. What I found the most baffling aside of not having these symptoms was that beside taking in loads of salt my blood pressure is actually really low.
My mom is a salt addict - she puts extra salt on nearly everything because she thinks it doesn't taste of anything otherwise. She continues to do this even though she knows it just removes her ability to taste things in more.
Salt is also a preservative. After the civil war, the most needed substance in Richmond Va was salt. There was none coming into the city. The residence ended up scooping it up from salt house floors.
I have some questions: 1) What are the symptoms for not enough salt? 2) How do Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium interact with each other? 3) How do you know if you have too much or too little of Magnesium, Calcium, or Potassium ?
To answer 1, it's high blood pressure, ironically. It's when your liver stresses out and release hormones to conserve the bits of salt you still have, because to put it quite simply, sodium is required for important body functions. Blood pressure meds typically target to disrupt these hormones. Sodium seems to be wrongly accused, when it should be low potassium. So eat potassium-rich veggies and add salt to taste.
Sodium, potassium, and otger minerals dont interact with eachother that much in the body, they are used in ion transport through the cell membrane to drive cellular processes and energy.
My salted popcorn has a TON of salt in it and I always scratch the salt off the inside of the popcorn packet and I get clumps of salt on my fingers and I eat it, I feel sick now.
Actually salt is good, what Americans are missing is its partner Potassium... In fact several times the illnesses related to salt in the video talk about potassium deficiency. I kept waiting on the pause moment when the guy was like "... Wait hold on is not to much salt is low potassium that is the problem!" didn't happen... Many cultures around the world eat 2-3 the salt Americans do and live longer healthier lives.
Finally someone who knows what they're talking about. 1,500 mg of sodium is FAR FAR too low and can actually cause half of the problems listed on here and even more problems including lower mortality! It's very serious. This time BS will have to take my dislike for misinformation. Sure the rest of the video is on point to what happens when you have too much, but that's almost entirely related to potassium deficiencies. If you're not potassium deficient (which most Americans are) then your optimum threshold is actually somewhere in the upper limits of 4-5k milligrams of sodium which can be an upward of 11 GRAMS OF SALT per day!!
In conclusion... tastes good=bad, tastes like paper=good. I work with the elderly (80+) every day. Some are doing great, most are just waiting for the sun to set. Regular pain, more meds than a pharmacy, and are embarrassed they can't move without machine assistance. Seeing it first hand and speaking with them... I have decided to live while I can and accept the consequences.
Fishes have different mechanisms, salt water fishes can eliminate salt, while freshwater fishes absorb salt! Take for example salmon fish, salmons through hormone release activate or deactivate salt absorption, these fishes swim on both waters, in different stages of their lives!
Salt on Tuna, Salt on Pancakes, Salt in Soup, Salt on Chicken, Salt on Steak, Sea Salt Peanut butter, Salted Peanut Butter Cookies, Salted Crackers, Fruit Salad with chili Salt...OH! The possibilities are endless and yummy to the tummy. What's for dinner you may ask? Anything with Salt of course.
The frequent urinatiom/extreme thirst part of diabetes is actually a separate kind of diabetes. Sugar diabetes is diabetes mellitus; the accompanying water diabetes is called diabetes insipidus.
A specialist (doctor and university teacher) tried to not eat salt at all for a month, then she went to check her health (investigation) and she found that the values were all how they were supposed to be. So, salt is optional.
120/80 is an old guideline recommendation and AHA actually recommends 140/90 (2013 ACCA/AHA guidelines). There is no additional benefit of lowering BP of 140/90 mmHg.
Wow I put salt on my fruits , salad , pizza , veggies even in my milk sometimes . Including cereal . I even add salt the my Fry's at McDonald's this video definitely woke me up
Stop over explaining things, we don't need a 2 minute intro on what the video is about, it's in the title. That's like being forced to watch the trailer of a movie before you watch the movie. If someone needs their hand held that much then that's their problem, stop catering to their stupidity. It's up to them to be able to keep up with the rest of us.
-_- NIKHIL KUMAR Eat some vegetables or other foods that dosent have salt so I am much more healtier than you I can prevrnt hearth attacks buy adding hot sauce but not too much I eat salt not too often
I’m only here because every time I get my blood work done my doctor always tells me to consume _more salt_ because my sodium levels are always low. However, my diet has taken a turn for the worse and I’ve been eating cheap, high sodium foods, as of late. I’ve been having daily headaches, fatigue, vision problems, and brain fog. I suspected it was from too much sodium, and this video confirmed it. It’s probably even worse for me since I NEVER cook with salt, add salt to ANY food I eat, _typically_ eat whole foods for _at least_ half of my diet, and have always drank more than the “required” amount of water. As a matter of fact, if I didn’t have animals, I probably wouldn’t even have salt in my house.

Actualy salt works against cramps. Absence of salt in diet causes more problems than slight overdose. Also salt helps to keep water in body and blood.
which salt, the cooking one (nevermind euro or asia version) have nothing linked to the cramps. They are both natrium salts.
Absence of salt is also cause of depression and brain malfunction. Na is counterweight of K so it keeps balance.
What always confused me however is that given what you said, why does consuming it in a large enough quantity indeed make you much more thirsty?

My mom is a salt addict - she puts extra salt on nearly everything because she thinks it doesn't taste of anything otherwise. She continues to do this even though she knows it just removes her ability to taste things in more.
No. 1 - You regularly use twitter
no, ur salty attitude is the biggest sign you're eating too much salt.

Gotta see the doctor next monday😪
Tnx for the infos, I knew them but this confirms it
Salt is also a preservative. After the civil war, the most needed substance in Richmond Va was salt. There was none coming into the city. The residence ended up scooping it up from salt house floors.
Ur intro shouldn’t be almost 2 mins it ruins it
They probably did that for the sweet sweet ad revenue...
2 mins of filler at the start before actually telling the 9 signs, gotta do those 10 mins ads
Ikr. Just get to the point of the video!
I have some questions:
1) What are the symptoms for not enough salt?
Less than 1 TSP of salt a day...? Thats bologna....eating too little salt is worse for ur health....
This video is just trying way too hard.
MeatyPunk at least they tried
MeatyPunk o
They're obviously stretching it to 10 minutes.
“DO YOU LIKE SALT? GIVE THIS VIDEO THUMBS UP IF SO!”
???
Key word is "too much" . Sodium is an essential mineral in the body. Without it, nerve and muscle functions are compromised.

To much salt also affects you attention span.
Same
Yep
Jason Wood tyt
Not wanting to waste one's time when pursuing what one wants to know, has NOTHING to do with attention span.
My salted popcorn has a TON of salt in it and I always scratch the salt off the inside of the popcorn packet and I get clumps of salt on my fingers and I eat it, I feel sick now.

Omg I thought I was only one who does that to my popcorn bag😁😁😁

This was a great eye opener reminding us to watch our salt consumption!, Thanks
This was informative...thank you👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊👍🏻
BICYCLING AUNTIE it is really really fake just so you know
NoraNavyDonutz :3 how is it fake, in what way do you mean❓
BICYCLING AUNTIE right😭

Ya salt helps the body retain water, if you stop eating salt you will be constantly thirsty
BICYCLING AUNTIE th
Half of these are my side effects from hyperthyroidism 😏
If salt really raised blood pressure, then fish everywhere would be exploding.
Indeed!
Damian A doesn't understand humor- smart dude!
Fishes have different mechanisms, salt water fishes can eliminate salt, while freshwater fishes absorb salt! Take for example salmon fish, salmons through hormone release activate or deactivate salt absorption, these fishes swim on both waters, in different stages of their lives!
9 signs I've been watching your videos too much:
headache
hunger
loss of sleep
mild excitedness
boredom
depression

Thumbs up for aids

If I said "Can you pass me the salt", at my home they would look odd at me... and then ask why i speak english.
Ugh.... I eat salt when I'm hungry and have no leftovers, is it bad?
it may be not enough potassium, which is needed to balance salt
salt is necessary for adrenal function and producing stomach acid to digest food, low sodium diets interfere with stomach acid production
eating too many carbohydrates, especially from grains (corn, wheat, rice), can lead to water retention as well
Lol this channel is serious about life

The frequent urinatiom/extreme thirst part of diabetes is actually a separate kind of diabetes. Sugar diabetes is diabetes mellitus; the accompanying water diabetes is called diabetes insipidus.
1 Sign You're Eating Too Little Salt = Death
really? there are people in this world who NEVER ate salt in their life so you might check your info...
@@adrianakuzmikova1697 That's not true
A specialist (doctor and university teacher) tried to not eat salt at all for a month, then she went to check her health (investigation) and she found that the values were all how they were supposed to be. So, salt is optional.
120/80 is an old guideline recommendation and AHA actually recommends 140/90 (2013 ACCA/AHA guidelines). There is no additional benefit of lowering BP of 140/90 mmHg.
You are plain wrong.
Look at the Sprint trial.
That is the most Caucasian thing I heard anyone say.

SPICE it up alright.
An Alias that’s what I said😭😭
Some people get to the point of having diabetes and they assume taking medications permanently is the solution than just cutting out the excess salt.

this channel for me is one of the best.

As a matter of fact, if I didn’t have animals, I probably wouldn’t even have salt in my house.
this is false lots of salt preserves water inside the body
I don't add salt to my foods ...I eat salt directly. I don't know how this happened but now I'm addicted to it . Prayers😷
9 Signs You're Eating Too Little Salt would have more sources. Read The Salt Fix.
