Have you published them? I would love to read it.
Maikos also paint both of their lips, only first-year maikos paint their lower lip only. At 3:09 you have an arrow pointing to the girl on the left while talking about geisha's hairstyle, but she is a maiko. You can tell that she is a maiko by looking at her obi, which is hanging down instead of being tied like geikos. You can also see a piece of red cloth and some flower hair ornaments in her hair which is never seen on a geiko. Both girls wore the wareshinobu hairstyle, which are hairstyles of junior maikos, once they get promoted to senior maikos their hairstyles would change to the ofuku style. Maikos usually become senior maikos in their second or third year working as a maiko. So I would guess the girl on the left is probably in her second or third year while the girl on the right is in her first year, you can she has strands of flower petal ornaments hanging down at the front which is a type of kanzashi only first-year maikos can wear. Ok, I know I seem a little too obsessed, I'm out.

Great corrections~ though most of the pictures used in this video were neither geisha or maiko, but henshin, people who pay a studio to dress them up in these different custumes. There were only a couple pictures of real maiko and geiko (the kansai term for geisha where maiko is also used)
@@moushimoushi8963 ah yes. upon closer inspection, I noticed that in the picture that I was referring to, the two ladies do not have a kanokodome on their buns which does seem a bit odd.
@@totallyawesome7548 there are a few different signs for them, signs you would be able to use for a lot of henshin. They’re wearing kanzashi for different months, they have stark white collars at the front despite having the hair ornaments for first year (the one on the left is wearing shidare as well, the angle makes them more difficult to see) and they’re wearing cheap clip on obi ^^

I'm American and I think there might be another reason geisha were thought to be prostitutes. In western culture (or at least English speaking cultures) women that would entertain men for pay were usually prostitutes. And when people describe geisha they use similar wording, so that makes it sound like prostitution.

They don't take off their makeup I think. how so where does she go after? does not come out of ochaya. And who takes it? some daimyos samurai and in the 20th century, When I really choose to exist I don't know.

Great question! Yes, you can use them interchangeably. ‘Geiko’ is more common in Kyoto :)

Kind of! Geiko and geisha are regional terms. Geiko is used in the kansai region and geisha is used in the kanto region. A geiko would find it strange to be called a geisha, and a geisha would find it strange to be called a geiko ^^

It’s a very little known fact, but Japan’s original geisha were actually men known as taikomochi.

@@thefury-187 no, they were male entertainers. There were (and still are) taikomochi which were the musicians, and houkan who were the performers. It had nothing to do with their sexuality as again these artists didn’t and still don’t sleep with clients.

Considering they originally entertained the patrons of the courtesans as they waited for the courtesans to make their way to the tea house and the pleasure quarters were strict about who could do what I’m not really sure how they would sell sexual services.

In 2022..what would attract today's Japanese women to this lifestyle? It seems like quite a sacrifice.
There are a few things that might attract a person to this profession. Some include:
The fame an notoriety: Maiko and geiko are like celebrities in their kagai (And out) that includes having paparazzi following them around (Which can be annoying to most, but it's not hard to see why some might like this attention.) They have fans, even fan clubs that are supporting them. A lot of maiko and geiko join after seeing maiko on TV programs including Koi Maiko
The sense of community: Community is super important in the various kagai, women supporting each other, these small areas are bustling with greetings, well wishes, and people helping each other. There's a huge emphasis on hierarchy here where the proper respect needs to be given, but it's not like the seniors looking down on the juniors, rather they're expected to help them, guide them, support them and the juniors are expected to follow their guidance. Strangely enough, this hierarchy isn't based on age, but rather experience, how long you've been practicing sets your spot on the totem pole. Some women are drawn to this sense of community and this space of people supporting each other strictly by their peers.
The luxury: While starting the profession is definitely difficult, it's a whole new world that can be difficult to adjust to with tight schedules, high expectations, not a whole lot of freedom, once a geiko becomes established and independent her time and her money is all hers, which by the way, that's a lot of money! Geiko are expected to spend their money on tools of the trade including their kimono and obi, instruments, lessons, etc but they can also spend it on whatever else they would like as long as they're covering their living expenses. That includes lavish vacations, clothing, events, whatever they would like, some savvy geiko even go on to open up other businesses to bring in even more money.
Bumping elbows with the rich, powerful, and famous: Their clientele mostly consist of wealthy business people, but celebrities from around the world are known to enjoy an ozashiki while visiting the country. Along with celebrities many people high in government are also known to participate in ozashiki as well ^^
A stepping stone: Even completing a maiko apprenticeship is a huge accomplishment that would look great on a resume, some maiko and geiko use this profession as a stepping stone to other endeavors they have in the future. Along with the arts, they show great work ethic, determination, skills in working with others, and great communication skills as well as they navigate different social situations with sometimes intimidating people. Some leave to go to college, or expand their arts into other avenues or utilize connections they've made through the profession.
The arts: The most obvious, women join the profession simply because they have an interest in the arts and want to help preserve the traditional arts of their country ^^

I was going to say that I think she, The person who made this video did not mention several things that I found on websites, For example that Oiran are courtesans, I ended up writing myself in her place. but it was important that she added some other details. but I will highlight the fact that this subject is quite complex.
