There are so many titles out there that I absolutely love and only picked up because they were niche and rare! I can think of a favorite that most of the big reviewers gave like a 4/10. Yet I still consider it one of my favorite horror titles! Sometimes you just gotta go into games with an open mind. Loved the video, I love when people give light to underrated titles!
This is a really great attitude, I wish more people were still playing games to have fun and not to find things to criticise. Thank you for using your powers for good ☺️
I think DmC’s reputation really improved with the Definitive Edition’s fixes and, more importantly, once we knew the original series was returning. Instead of being the game that killed a legendary franchise it’s now a solid action title wrapped in a meme. Heck, DMC5 even lifted some of its ideas. also Super Paper Mario slaps.
It’s the poster example of a game that would not have received half of the flak it did if it weren’t lined up as a replacement for the existing franchise. It is indeed a very competent action game, even in base form, with delightful platforming to break up the pacing between encounters. Something the previous DMC games had notorious problems with. Story, tone and writing is just plain and simple not very coherent - especially compared to Enslaved.
Shout-out to Digimon Survive and Yokai Watch as well -- I didn't feel like they fit in this video, but I chose to incorporate music from those two games in this video since I think they're pretty underrated games too.
Want to compliment you on your editing. *really* good and smooth stuff. Nice to see Castlevania: Lords of Shadows be mentioned here too. Many people really dislike 2, for reasons of gameplay change-ups where they didn't need to be and/or story, but i enjoyed LoS1 well enough and wanted to give LoS2 a fair shot. Enjoyed it quite a lot and discovered things i liked and disliked about it that i didn't know before. Or simply noticed how things were different. The structure in LoS2 for example quite sucks for backtracking and the shop is hard to reach. Yet on the plus side, there is an item (the Dodo Egg) that actively seeks out hidden things to find that can have a positive effect. There were no grapple moves with the whip anymore, but we did get expanded magics and new full weapons. The enemy selection wasn't as imaginative and diverse as 1, but spare for a few, they still work well. And the bosses are just as cool as ever, if not more. I don't remember where in the video you said it or how exactly you worded it, but you said something like "The people that did resonate with it, resonated very strongly". That's how i have been describing a metroidvania from very late 2023 by name of Cookie Cutter. Might be one of the biggest fans of the game out there, because part of what made it special for me, was looking up interviews with the lead dev and learning of the journey that Cookie Cutter made before it is what it is now. And what it is planned to be, for Stefano (the lead dev) wants to substantially support it for a long time to come until a full story is told. In the interviews and outside of it, Stefano's shared the phrase "Fetish no fashion". It's not exclusively speaking of a sexual fetish in this sense, but... well, he's never explicitly explained what it means. Probably doesn't need it. Many of the inspirations he quoted came from comics, manga, cartoons, artists, experiences with raves in Italy, and especially music. Stefano himself is of punk rock background. And it shows. There's references everywhere and it's part of the fun in some ways to see what easter eggs you can recognize. In essence, Cookie Cutter is a culmination of Stefano's personal tastes through life so far. Went through more than hundred interviews with possible publishers before he found one that was comfortable with not interfering in his vision at all, however weird, unmarketable, out-there, provocative, uncomfortable etc. it may be. Like i said, those that resonate with it, tend to do so very strongly. Others have been slamming the game for its themes, depictions, or insulting the game for the way Cherry looks. And of course there's those in-between too, that have their own gripes on a technical level. I was initially quite put off, didn't like Cherry's design. But in the months leading up to release, my interest was growing to the point of making fan art. Now the game's been out for around... nine months, i'd say, there is more planned, and i'm doing my best to share mention of it wherever possible because i want to see more of it. Getting as invested as i ended up being in CC, made it sink in how much effort, time and sacrifice can go into making a game of quality. Balancing the work you do yourself, learning how to do new things, how to keep your story safe , how to continue the search for ways to let it be its own thing without outside corporate influence leaving their mark, how to manage all the people whose skills and services are part of bringing this tale to life, and how to keep them all happy and not let your own ego get the better of you. Cookie Cutter is not here to reinvent the wheel. Stefano wanted to make something that came from himself. Something different. And he's grateful for all the people that do jive with it. And everyone that gets rude about it, can sit comfy on his middle finger (his own words) There's so many more games that have my heart that i could mention, from as (relatively) recent as Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, Soulstice and No Straight Roads, to older titles like the entire Darksiders series (hoping the new game will be more in line with 1 and 2!), Kya: Dark Lineage for PS2 and the Rayman games. But for now, i'll keep it at: Thank you for the video, wish you good luck and fun in further projects be they videos or otherwise, and take care. I hope that videos like these and others will help out the lesser-talked about games.
Hey, thanks so much for sharing this comment. This is one I'm going to have to come back to and re-read from time to time to remind myself why I do this (this video took me hours upon hours to produce). Funny thing about Cookie Cutter -- This is a rather sentimental story. My younger brother passed away in February, right before his birthday and a little after I launched this channel (I made a heartfelt video about him if you'd like to watch and cry) He was my best friend and I've known him since birth so it obviously wrecked me. On his birthday I wanted to get his name in his handwriting tattooed, and I ended up going to a tattoo shop nearby. I made friends with the tattoo artist there, who did a great job and even went out to lunch with me afterwards. We got to talking and it turns out he was the level designer for Cookie Cutter. He is a REALLY fantastic, intelligent, caring, and talented person that I'm so grateful I got to meet on that day. I have the game and played a good bit of it but I want to really sit down and replay it again and possibly make a video and share this story with the main audience as well
@@humblemudgames I am heartened that my message has been of such a good effect for you. Things we take for granted, if we realize it or not, can have more effort into it than we may think. I have no concept of the exact skills, techniques, knowledge and time required for editing, but it shouldn't go unnoticed. Thank you for the time to share this, and my condolences and wishes of strength to you and all of your younger bro's loved ones. With a loss like that, i cannot imagine a single year to be enough to have sorted out all emotions in full. Especially with that close bond, i cannot fathom the weight of the pain and sadness. For what the words of a stranger on the internet are worth, may your brother still have a lingering, good presence, however unseen like the wind or a smell. Someone or something to bring solace throughout the lives of those who remain, up until you can meet again, and other loved ones, in a good world beyond our physical one. It is likewise heartening to read that story of meeting the level designer for CC, and how his company has been of good effect for. May you have a lot of fun with CC whenever you return to the Megastructure. There are console ports planned currently that will have more content than what is currently in the PC build, at least for a while. The console ports' content are planned for all versions, and it will be built up from there. There's so much more potential for what one could encounter in the Megastructure and i want to see that all unfold. With your permission, may i share your comment and the story you have shared, with Stefano directly and ask if he may share this with the level designer? I am certain that such connections will make their day, if not week, and even other parts of the month.
A lot of times, mid games have some of the coolest ideas, and I'd argue that a game that makes you think about what they were going for or makes you wish that idea was expanded upon further in a sequel or another title with a bigger budget or whatever is part of the whole experience of that particular game. And that's how, to me, a lot of average games can feel bigger than what they are. they often try to punch above their weight class and I think that's admirable.
Excellent perspective man! I can't state the number of times I've enjoyed a game that was trashed by critics that ended up resonating with me more than expected. Even games with a ton of issues, if you can get past those and find something truly enjoyable, that's a good sign. Castlevania 64 is one I always loved since it released, and never understood the hate. Same goes with Resident Evil 5, which while a tone shift, was an absolute blast. Prince of Persia was another I always defended and was honestly my favorite installment since Sands of Time! Also, shoutout for showcasing Zen Intergalactic Ninja for the Game Boy in your outro!
Honestly one of the people who inspired me to try RE5 was you! I remember hearing or seeing you say in the past somewhere that it's underappreciated! And Zen was one of my earliest gaming memories -- had to give it a shout. It just worked out that Konami also made the TMNT game I wanted show right after, so it felt like fate!
Resident Evil 5 was and still is an amazing game when you have a reliable coop companion like a sibling or significant other. My brother and I played the heck out of that game. It refined the combat that made RE:4 so good. The vibe wasn’t spooky. It wasn’t very scary. But it is a very fun coop shooty action game with light puzzle elements.
@@okvvvvvvvvvvvvv I will review games I don't like but yeah i try not to bash. I will usually recommend a game i don't like if i can put myself in someone else's shoes and analyze the pieces of the game that are done well or interesting.
@@GameTimeWhy that's great, it's hard to know if things are worse sometimes, some big titles are obviously jokes today, but some games are appealing to new generation and it's hard to really see how they see it.
@@okvvvvvvvvvvvvv I grew up playing flash games so i kind of get some of the niche or really weird things. Flash games were so strange sometimes but had lots of bangers too.
Speaking on behalf of my brother, he would say that Final Fantasy XIII was an under-appreciated game. I remember seeing him play that game all the time and sinking hours into it and he enjoyed it.
FFXIII is literally one of my favorite games from the PS3/360 era. The cinematics from that game remain spectacular and jaw-dropping to this day, and while the gameplay took a little long to truly come to form, once it did, there wasn't a single battle that didn't make me feel like a masterful tactician. Perfect? Not by any means. Entertaining with exceptional production value and undeniably unique? You better believe it The DMC reboot was an absolute blast on higher difficulties. Something I don't hear much about is how the changes to some of the core mechanics actually encouraged people who struggled with the lock-on/directional input focused controls (mapping the High Time move to its own button, for instance) to practice higher level mechanics (jump cancelling, juggling multiple enemies in midair for extended combos, etc...) in a more approachable and forgiving vacuum. As far as the edgy tone and character design, penty of people remain unaware that Capcom gave Team Ninja absolutely unprecedented creative freedom, so much so that Capcom thought they were playing too safe. The presentation was also completely unlike anything we'd seen in DMC before and the twisted world design of Limbo was a blast to be swallowed up by. Point being, this video makes some very astute observations about video games and how we perceive them in such a terminally online society. Subscribed. Well done!
I haven't played any DMC game myself but i'm a big enthousiast of the genre of those kinds of games. One of my absolute favourites in that genre from recent years is a game by name of Soulstice. Has a lot to offer in terms of story + characters and gameplay alike, with its own ups and downs and in-betweens. Stronger ups than downs. I've seen it said that gameplay-wise, Soulstice had inspirations from DmC, DMC5 and Bayonetta. Tone-wise i feel it's more like Darksiders. Can very much recommend looking into it.
@@jurtheorc8117 only seeing this now, but I just picked up Solstice on a PS Store sale! I've got a ton of other stuff to play, but that one is definitely on the list now
Back in the 90s or early 2ks i had to stop playing castlevania 64 because of the nitro glycerin segment. Absolutely awful. Ruins the game. Lords of Shadow was pretty solid though. Edit: 1 month later, finished watching the video, sorry for being negative, you deserve better than that for your effort and positivity. I'm easily traumatized, and impulsively express myself to feel validated to myself. After this recent (better part of) 2 year long herb binge, I'm finding it easier and easier to accept I'm alone and isolated because of a lifetime of severe mental illness. It's just how it is! All that aside, Castlevania 64 triggered me. In it's defense, not as bad as Persona 4, the p2 ep late game mapping quest and social links from devil survivor 2.
barely a minute into this video, but I just had to chime in and give major props for mentioning GameTalk. It was my very first internet home and nobody ever seems to bring it up
I love this video, and I hope more people can adopt this mindset! I loved DmC when it came out and constantly agued for it. "But bro, Dante is so cringy now!" No man, Dante was always cringy, lol. This one is just a teenager's idea of cool for a different era of teenagers! More recent example, I put off playing Death Stranding for way too long because of what I heard about it. But when I played it it became what I possibly consider one of the coolest (and most important) games within a decade. I'm still dying on that hill. A game for everybody is a game for nobody, and sometimes we need to remember that. Great video, take my like and subscribe.
My man! I've edited this comment so much because you're just spitting hot facts, but I absolutely agree it's the best time to be a gamer even if games aren't the best they've ever been (depends on the game) & devs/publishers need to be setting realistic goals. Not every game needs to be open world or 50+ hours. Astro Bot was a 17 hour platinum trophy journey for me & while some may say that's too short, it was easily the best game I've played all year along side Pepper Grinder. Shorter games with no bloat & good production values with minimal bugs at launch. If 1 hour of pure fun isn't worth $4 then I'm not sure people understand value, that's the price of a premium chocolate bar. I played Quest 64 when it came out as a JRPG starved kid & while it wasn't perfect, I really enjoyed my time with the game to the point of making sure it's still in my collection today. However I also enjoyed DMC when it came out, specifically for the gameplay loop. I never quite understood the hatred it got as it captured & updated the DMC combat for modern times, even if the story presentation could be a bit Edge Lord & Try hard. RE5 is also single handedly responsible for me finally getting into Resident Evil games since it had co-op & a friend was able to pass along tips while we were playing. I also picked up the special edition of Price of Persia back in the day & loved it at the time. It's a game that respects the players time, arguably to a fault. However I also think people look for too much in a game, did you have fun? If yes then great as long as there wasn't too much frustration.
Fun games are being made. The problem is that not enough attention is given to them either because it's not coming from a major company, or it's not an indie game trying to go for that quarter muncher difficulty or not trying to hit the nostalgia spot. Like this game that recently came out, Reynatis. A lot of reviews I've seen complain about the game looking and feeling like a budget title...because it basically is a budget title. Not everything from Square Enix is going to have the same production value as FF16, nor should it. That's how we keep getting things like Concord and Anthem
One of my favorite game I played this year had under 10 reviews before I played it. I totally feel and agree with this. People don't realize that they want AA games, but they laugh off AA games a lot of the time when they actually see them 🤷♂️
its a FuRyu production, not SE, though the dev team did have SE allumni on it i have recently bought it and played it, im saddened that cause of the overally harsh critical reception we may not get a sequel cause damn, this has some good foundations for a continuation.
This video was everything I needed to hear. Sometimes a minute part of me likes to have a common positive experience with a game with the majority. Take Starfield for example. I adored what it had to say about space and humanity's place out there, but when people trashed it, I felt bad. No longer. Some of my favourite games are classics while others didn't do so well. Those are the hidden gems now I find.
Exactly! I'm glad this resonated with you. Even though I made this video, I still struggle with it a lot too. It's disheartening when you've been playing a game for 2-3 days and loving it, so you go online to see others hopefully enjoying it too, only to find them complaining about it. It can sour your experience and make you think you had it all wrong.
Prince of Persia 2008 is a masterpiece, at least as good as The Sands of Time, but it was too different from the earlier titles so many people wrote it off. It also has one of the best endings ever... Even though the DLC apparently undermines that, never played it myself.
Wholheartedly agree. If you think games aren't fun anymore, something's wrong on your end. You're either not playing the right games or you need to stop playing for 12hrs a day or something.
Playing any games I could find and were half interesting led to a lot of experiences I don't want to forget. Enigma being a prime example (puzzle game inspired by Oxyd), boy does that have a difficulty curve, and it's a pretty obscure game, but satisfying when you finish a level.
4:07 My memories of the DMC discourse are that it was 100% complaints about it being a reboot with different character designs/aesthetics. A lot of broad backlash tends to be extremely shallow. 4:47 🎶 _You hammer the buttons and wiggle the sticks!_ 🎶
The thing about games is there are no bad ones. Even the worst game is fun to someone. I know a guy who plays a $2 Cornhole game on his PS4 and has the absolute best time with it no matter how much he plays it
Honestly this is part of the reason I threw in some footage of stuff like Goblin Sword & Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 in this video. Are they phenomenal games? No. Do I have fond memories of playing them. Yes! And I think I paid like $3 for Goblin Sword?
I just beat Dead Rising 4 recently. Everyone hates it but i really enjoyed it probably because im a casual gamer. So i liked that they removed the timer and let me have time to explore and not mess up my file by missing deadlines. And being able to load from checkpoint instead of starting over from the beginning is also a welcome change to me. But i guess the "real" fans of dead rising feel betrayed by those changes.
YO! I Did NOT expect someone to name that so quickly. Bravo!! I got that game from a flea market when I was young and it was too hard for me back then but I played the crap out of it!
Blur is one of those games no one talks about that i think is absolutely fun. My dad doesn't often play video games with me. Only exception is racing games. Project gotham racing and forza were really fun but Blur was the pinnacle for us.
I think sometimes when you weren't a fan of the original thing it can be hard to understand why people hate certain new games so hard. It's like you enjoy a product named "egg" and you get it and it's a perfectly good chicken egg. Kinda fun. There's definitely bad eggs out there that aren't getting hate. But if you were there from the start, it used to be OSTRICH eggs. Something has changed, you weren't given what they had the ability to deliver in the past, and that means they likely never will again. Fun and forgettable is the standard. They should maybe cost $40 at most at this point, but ya know, industry price fixing and all that. When something is truly exceptional and it becomes just fun and forgettable, that is so much worse than just being bad. That is loss.
I didn't want to harp too long on each individual game because I figured I'd alienate people who may not be as familiar with every series, so I admittedly did kind of brush over/deeply summarize the discourse for each one -- but yeah, if you still look at say, RE5, as a bad title, I don't blame you. No one is wrong with how they feel. And when you REALLY love a thing and its creators do something that makes you feel alienated, it's tough to reconcile with. I just know for myself through revisiting a lot of games years later, once I'm disconnected from the hype or the hate, I usually enjoy the game more. And I made a mistake with Castlevania 64, another reason I wanted to make this video -- though I can ABSOLUTELY see why it being released around the same time of SotN made it easy to not enjoy this game. I had to cut it from this script, but I actually really disliked Mario Odyssey at first because at the time of its release, I let the hype around me build it up to be this game it wasn't, and then of course I was disappointed. I tried it again 2 years later and now I can't decide if I like it, Mario Galaxy, or Mario 64 more. But yeah, if you were disappointed by PoP/DMC reboot, RE5, FFXIII, Super Paper Mario, Quest, Castlevania 64 -- I don't blame you. ✌️
Yeah, glad SPM was featured in the video because that was literally my experience. It was the first Paper Mario game I'd played (I didn't even realize Paper Mario was a distinct entity from Super Mario at the time) and because of that, I enjoyed the game for what it was because my expectations were for a platformer- it was a mario game, why wouldn't it be a platformer? And later on, I was absolutely shocked to find out that people really hated it. I can understand now why people were upset with the change, but I think people are really depriving themselves of a good game with an amazing story and characters when they dismiss it because it's not an RPG.
@@tinyetoile5503 Super Paper Mario has arguably the best story and villain in the Paper Mario series. It's also really nice to finally have a Mario game where you play as Mario, Bowser, Peach, and Luigi. It's like the Mario RPG 2 lineup I always dreamed of. But it's SO different from everything else tonally/world setting wise/gameplay wise -- I get the hate. But like you said, it's a fantastic experience if you can go in open-minded and play it for what it is.
Wow operation ivy, we must be the same age lol subbed. I recommend summon knight a swordcraft story for gba. Hidden gem and the sequel had a huge budget and quality increase
I'll check that out, I don't think I have heard of that! And yeah sometimes I throw in random music references 😅 I saw Rancid open for Green Day this year, it was awesome.
Don't buy games based on other people's takes, be they critics or friends. We all go into a game looking for certain things, elements which appeal to us. It's all subjective. One man's trash is another's mans treasure as the saying goes. Like what you like & f**k all the haters. They are only opinions, not facts. Value the opinion that matters most, your own. You don't have to be rude, you can value another perspective without it changing your own.
I'm glad you found your way! In my case, I played almost nothing but multiplayer games for the better part of a decade (Super Smash Bros, Smite, Rocket League, Dead By Daylight, etc) and my friend group dissolved one day and I just... had no reason to go back to those games anymore without friends around, you know? I literally put my PS4 in storage. I was sad though, and one day thought, "well what did I USED to play?" and my roots were mostly platformers and RPGs. I sought out some RPGs and adventure games and now here I am. I'm back and that love is back, and that's what inspired this channel and everything.
I’ve had pretty mixed results when trying out “hidden gems”. Sometimes I find an absolute banger though! I played Tokyo Mirage Sessions on the Wii U and loved the gameplay, that’s how I got introduced to the SMT franchise 😂
This is really similar to my experience with Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise. It was way better than it had any right to be, and a lot of Yakuza fans dismiss it as "just a Yakuza game with a FotNS skin" but I thought it was AWESOME and it got me into both Yakuza and FotNS!!
@@RestorationRelaxation To be honest, I think I hid my passion for games behind my musical passion, for way too long. After my brother passed away I embraced this passion a whole lot more and I realized it's something I should've done way sooner! Hit me up on Facebook or Instagram if you'd want to ever catch up dude!
Nice work on the video! I just wanted to say, when you do the video on Quest 64, please consider collaborating with PK In the Universe. He mentions the game regularly, and ii think he is a fan of your channel. Thanks! 😊
This is a subject that I struggle with. As with a lot of us, I grew up playing whatever and just enjoying them for the experiences they were. I still have fond memories playing "Quest 64" for instance, even if I never got far since I didn't know what I was doing. And a lot of those sentiments still hold. "Devil May Cry 2" is a decent action game, "Drakengard" is an intriguing and surreal experience, "Star Fox Adventure" was different but still a fun adventure experience, etc. But like...all of these games are utterly hated now, or at least are viewed in an inherently negative sense. Due to that, I've convinced myself that I grew up playing and appreciating the wrong games. No matter how much I try to shake it off, it's a thought that permeates my every activity. It's to the point where I no longer have any confidence in my own tastes and opinions. "Crystar" is a game I loved playing...yet nearly every mention of it online has been that it's an offensively bad game. "DNF Duel" is a fighter I rather enjoyed...but there's so much discourse surrounding it now. "Neptunia" is a series that I continue to enjoy for being a silly gaming parody...but it's heavily stigmatized and hated by most. I recently played "Tasomachi: Behind the Twilight" and enjoyed the relaxed vibe it had...but it's seemingly not liked based on the few videos I've seen covering it. And now I'm looking at the recently released "Reynatis" and seeing how nearly every Western RPG channel hates it. I'm actively afraid that I'm going to like the game, that there's something wrong with me for possibly enjoying it as a result. I like what I like and I will always stay true to myself with that, but I can't talk about any of it with others.
"Due to that, I've convinced myself that I grew up playing and appreciating the wrong games."... I wish I could show you my collection of concepts for this channel, lol. So before I began ever working on a video, but decided I wanted to make a channel, I briefly wrote about a ton of concepts I'd like to eventually explore one day. And one of those was called "Enjoying the 'Wrong' Games". I'm a big fan of Super Mario Bros. 2, Sonic R, The Legend of Dragoon, Super Paper Mario, Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX 2, and Sonic 3D Blast, which probably would've been the subjects of that hypothetical video. If you go back and rewatch this video, you'll notice I included either footage of all these games or songs from all these games in the video (except maybe Sonic R, but I used a lot of other Sonic stuff here). That was all intentional to illustrate my point that it's okay to like stuff that's not universally beloved. "Super Mario Bros 2 is just a reskinned Doki Doki", okay, but it ROCKS and added so much lore to Mario and its characters! The Legend of Dragoon wasn't Final Fantasy 7, but did it need to be? Dave Mirra 2 isn't as good as Tony Hawk's game, but its soundtrack introduced me to some of my favorite songs of all time, and it has maps based off real-life skate parks in the US, that's pretty cool! Super Paper Mario was a big departure in gameplay, but it also has arguably the best story of any Paper Mario game. Sonic 3D Blast was experimental and didn't make you feel "fast", but imo it's a lot more fun that speeding into a spiky death trap off-screen. So yeah, you get my point. I had this struggle too for a LONG LONG time. I talked about it a bit in my "You'll Never Play Everything" video too, because I also feel like I'm not very "cultured" when it comes to the classics (haven't played Metal Gear Solid, FF7, Portal, Half Life 2, etc). But I'm working on that. And I've worked on just accepting that I have unique tastes. Sounds like you do too.
Yup couldn't agree more. Some of my biggest letdowns come from games that are massively praised on the internet (while some of my all-time faves are regularly dismissed), if I'd only cared about the popular opinions that get parroted around then my gaming life would've been much less enjoyable.
Clicked on video because I will always preach about how good DmC:DMC is. This one made me love the whole franchise, but it started here, and with listening to a whole lot of Combichrist. Never surrender!
Yeah, discourse can be a bit weird. It tends to prefer firm opinions over less rigid ones. It makes sense since something is the best or the worst conveys emotions pretty clearly. While "it's fine" is not as impactful. And also, when writing something a message is much more impactful with a theme, something everything else builds towards. A game is good or bad can have that arc, a pretty simple story of these are the points in favor, tension rising with points against your opinion and resolution with reaffirmation of the original opinion. Not that a more complicated opinion can't make a fun read, actually, it very often does, but it needs to try harder. So simple and emotional often spreads faster. Not exactly bad, but a fun phenomenon of human discourse. And a reminder none of us are above it.
Yeah, I think hit the nail on the head here. It's very hard to sell someone on a game that truly has some good, bad, and ugly elements. Much easier to sell a game that is what it is, or is a masterpiece.
Thank god I’m not the only one that didn’t like Witcher 3 lol. I couldn’t get into it a while back but I think I might give it another go. The Celeste music also reminded me of the opposite as well. I used to hate platformers and puzzle games. I went into Celeste thinking I was t going to like it but I adore that game. It made me want to try games even if they weren’t something I necessarily thought I’d like. I was able to broaden my horizons quite a bit not in just gaming but life in general and I owe that to Celeste.
I wanna play W3 so badly but the combat simply sucks Someone once told me it was still leagues better than Zelda’s combat lmao But I love the souls games and soulslikes and also jrpgs combat usually and actual fighting games like super smash melee so I feel I’m pretty easy to please. It just feels clunky in W3 at least early on.
@@dirtsquids9854 You may find something interesting to enjoy in Clash: Artifacts of Chaos from 2023. It's got some elements of a Soulslike, but combat is more like a 3D fighting game. You can find different fighting styles and special attacks to assign to your character, and all sapient opponents (wildlife excluded) are individual characters within the world with their own movesets. They appear time and again in different team-ups, with the average opponent group size being about 3 individuals. There's also a nigh fully optional mechanic, a short minigame preceding a physical fight, called The Ritual. You roll some dice, take turns placing value modifiers, and the winner gets to enforce a special condition upon the ensuing melee. You don't have to bother with the Ritual if you don't want to-- you can run straight in if you so desire. Awesome world and story too.
Knights in the nightmare did have a reputation of being one of the most overly complicated and hardest RPGs which is kind of true but I think that's only because of how unique and weird it was and it's worth checking it out just for that I mean can you point me another game that is both a grid base strategy bullet hell RPG.....
The most recent game i ignored all reviews about and stood behind being a great game was cyberpunk 2077. Everyone said it was trash, but graphic glitches aside the story and gameplay were really good and it shows now
It depends on when you played it. After Phantom Liberty, it makes sense to like it because they worked tirelessly on fixing the major issues with the game. Cyberpunk 2077 now is not the Cyberpunk 2077 that was available at launch.
I originally wrote "time is a valuable thing" without thinking about it and then when I was recording just said the other line, lol. I laughed after but I cut that part out 🤣
Every time someone rejects the internet echo chamber, an angel gets its wings. Can we also talk about the stupidity of internet discourse about game design, and how a lot of it is parroted by youtubers? Yellow paint complainers, I'm looking at you.
I often think these things boil down to: "it's not a bad game, it's just a bad _ game". Of your own 6 examples, only 1 of them aren't in an already established series. That means people have expectations to those games, and if it doesn't match those expectations, I think people are more likely to give things a lower score or have negative opinions. I played FFXIII after only having played a bit of VII, and I personally thought it was alright, I mostly had fun with it. In fact, when I recently went back and started playing X, I even found myself thinking: "wait, this is super linear too, why don't people hate this like XIII?" I can also recognise these feelings about games in myself. I've been a Tomb Raider fan for a long time, and when the 2013 reboot came out, I was super disappointed. It wasn't what I wanted, it had no dual pistols, it was a cover shooter and very little actual tombs. However I can still recognise it's not an inherently bad game. It's just not a good Tomb Raider game in my - and many other long time Tomb Raider fans - opinion.
I've felt this way about so many games, but mostly games I'd played in the past, that get a terrible rep now. Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex was undoubtedly slow. Rushed development period due to playing hot potato with the IP, but for some reason they nailed the soundtrack. Might be one of the best in the entire franchise, and for that it'll always hold a special place in my heart. Pokemon XY marked the beginning of the 3D era (which a lot of people now attribute as the beginning of the end). It was far easier than its predecessors and they definitely streamlined the map too much that it became boring. But it also introduced one of the best battle gimmicks of all time: mega evolution. The online connectivity portal was super streamlined and efficient. You could pet your pokemon for the first time ever, and feed them through a series of simple but fun minigames. You could even artificially boost EV's without grinding in the grass. They also were the first game with character customization and they introduced the very popular Fairy type. Overall, its not a worse game than any of its successors and I still have love for it that I wish internet cynics would be able to understand. Finally, though I can understand its merit, I don't prefer the original FF7 over the current remakes. As a newcomer, I believe the remakes are the definitive way to play. Forcing myself to play through the og FF7 instead of just watching a playthrough or skimming the plot in a video or wikipedia article was a mistake. It burned me out on the series right before playing Reboot and I ended up slogging through Reboot tired and overwhelmed. I couldn't even appreciate it until months later - returning to complete all quests. I too have a hard time not letting online opinion get to me. But as I've been doing with tv and movies recently - I'm trying to let go of those influences and just let myself enjoy what I enjoy.
I actually relate a lot to that XY comment in particular. Oddly enough I'm in the process of making a Pokemon video on gens 1-3, I hope you check it out!!! BUT, after Gen 3 I stopped playing for a while. Pokemon X I picked up and really enjoyed, but that's the last one I played. I specifically remember how absolutely mind-blowing it was to do the online portal and trade Pokemon from all over. I was so excited that day one I had all of my favorite Pokemon. It does hold your hand a little too much and there is basically zero difficulty curve, but I think X and Y aesthetically fixed some of the blunders you saw from like, Diamond and Pearl, and yes, the mega evolutions were awesome. I still have very fond memories of my time with Pokemon X. I beat that game in a week as a full time college student
@@humblemudgames I definitely will- My fave video on the overall "decline" of Pokemon was Internet Pitstop's video about region design. I'm realizing that was a big influencing factor for me and with the introduction of an open zone in SWSH and a complete open world in SV, I feel like the games have lost some direction in that area. Even XY was starting to show signs of decline when some towns were so small, and there were almost no branching paths. But I still loved them regardless, and I feel people's main complaint is difficulty which doesn't MAKE the whole game. A lot of other things had to change for the series to truly begin declining including removing the national dex, taking away everyone's favorite battle gimmick, and eventually -on switch- making online play cost a whole membership.
@@A2daM2daZ I can totally see that. While putting this video together I quickly realized that a big big reason I think I have so many fond memories of Pokemon Ruby in particular is its amazing environments, especially the area around Fortree City and Lavaridge. So that theory about the environments checks out!
@humblemudgames can totally relate on XY being the game that brought me back to Pokemon. I also quit after gen 3 bc I never got a DS. So they can never make me hate XY lol I will defend it to death
I think the biggest issue for a lot of these "middling" games is that the people who still talk about them are ones who generally have negative opinions on them but have strong ties to the series, genre, platform, etc as a whole. Devil May Cry fans generally hate DmC because of the changes that game made (both to certain gameplay elements and the aesthetic as a whole). Same for Resident Evil fans and RE5, same with PoP fans and Prince 2008. One game that you didn't mention (probably because the discourse hasn't spread *too* far out of the series community) is about Bioshock Infinite. This was a massive success and Game of the Year candidate. And yet over time, the majority consensus among the community has become that B2 got a lot of undeveloped hate at launch and BI was overrated. Now a lot of series fans would rank the series 1, 2, Infinite, whereas 10 years ago, 1 and Infinite were fighting at the top and 2 was thrown in the gutter.
Yeah, there are absolutely a ton of valid reasons why the hate is so strong and like you said, the origins of that usually come from a strong love for the franchise. I have seen BioShock 2 come up quite a few times in the comments here and yeah, unfortunately I missed out on a lot of stuff from that gen so I'm not as familiar and am getting into some of that stuff now. But yeah, from my limited outside perspective I just assumed Infinite or 1 were the best. Those are the only ones I ever hear about.
@@humblemudgames as a big Bioshock fan, I definitely suggest you check out all 3 at some point. I would say 2 is my favorite, but the first is the most well rounded. 2 and Infinite both have some flaws that can either be shrugged off or they can dig at you.
I really like Bluesky better than Twitter. It’s like Twitter, but it’s not addictive and it doesn’t have ads. It’s so much easier to curate your experience a lot better. A buddy of mine is selling off some of his games. He happens to be selling the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy on PS3 and I think I’m gonna get that. I think just overall it’s really hard for us to prioritize. What games to play. There’s so many good games in existence like you said we have access to 50 years worth of stuff and it’s so hard to choose. Yeah there’s a lot of people who are definitely burned out and that’s why they say stuff like the games are no fun anymore. People have wrapped too much of their identity around gaming to the point they struggle to explore other hobbies. I just have such a hard time committing to one game. I really need to sit down on the couch pick a game and just say I’m all in. that’s tough for me unless I have some type of external force ( like the time a company sent me a game and I had to review it within a certain amount of time, I devoted a whole month to playing it like an hour every couple days). This is a very thoughtful editorial , it’s too funny that we both mentioned quest 64 in a video while releasing a video in the same day.
I've just embraced the fact that I'm pretty ADHD with games. Even as a kid, I loved hopping around between 5 or 6 games over the course of the night. Lately now I want to beat more games, and this year I've beaten more than I ever have. Over most of my life I'd be lucky if I beat 1 or 2 games in a year. Even now, I don't force myself to beat games. I actually made a video about this topic, of the overwhelming amount of games. It's an earlier video now -- "You'll Never Be Able to Play Everything". You might like it! All of the games I discussed here, minus Quest 64 and Super Paper Mario, I haven't beaten yet-- no way I'd have time to do all of that just for this one video. But I played enough of each to get a solid first impression and it was a fun little walk through history. I want to go back to FF13 myself. Separating your self-worth and identity from your hobbies is super important. Also, yes -- Quest fans for life!! 🙌
I'm a person that plays games on what I think looks good, what really upsets me is when good games have bad press and it kills the chance of a sequel or additional content.
A very beautiful video and one that I immediately related to because I am in your exact position right now, young but older and conciliating the adult with the inner child and my particular views and tastes with those of the world around me. This was an immediate subscribe.👍
I’ve watched two fairly comprehensive retrospectives on FF 13 this year, that have given me some food for thought on how the sum of its parts stack up. If you take the time to understand the weird naming conventions. It is very unfortunate that something went terribly wrong with the localization along with a ton of unfinished ideas, that flowed into both of the sequels, which for some made the first game even more confusing to wrap their head around.
It's difficult being truly objective especially once you've heard an "expert" or "journalist" talk about something. At best, they would talk about the technical aspects of the game and not the game itself in a vacuum. I have put off lots of games, shows and movies just because someone gave a low score for it. What's worse is I have spread these opinions to my friends and may have robbed them of fun experiences they could've had. Now I try my best to avoid reviews of anything before getting to experience these myself. Games are art and art is subjective. If you enjoyed a game then other's opinions don't matter.
I personally love RE5 and got 1000 in GFWL as well as platinum trophies both on ps3 and 4. PoP is one of the best games that year for me. DmC is a pretty good game, but it's not what I expect from the series. And that's basically what brings them all together in this discussion. These are the games from a well established series that try something different and fail to meet expectations of a fanbase. It's also amplified by whatever the situation was at the time. Now we have a DMC 5 and DmC didn't really matter. But at the time it was a kick to the gut and the uncertain future. Similar things can be said about other games
The way you speak of DMC makes me think of Darksiders as a whole. I personally really hope that the next game(s) will be more in line with 1 and 2, than 3 and Genesis used to be. Even though i did have a good bit of fun with Genesis. But commercially, many people write it off for the differences it had, as solid as it is.
I totally agree. I really liked the NSO Version of Zelda 2. When I told some of my friends I was asked how I could play such a bad game, yadda yadda. While I get that it’s most likely very frustrating without rollback and save states it’s a fun new spin on the formula with a flaw that was easily fixed by modern emulators.
Re5 is fun, and doesn't deserve that much hate. It's a bad resident evil sure, but unlock the infinite guns and tell me its not fun! Also to add on about enjoying games, I used to have a friend that was impossible to get to try new games, he would play an hour then say "whats the point?". He doesnt game anymore, but i learned something from that, the point is im having fun! So now if i ever find myself asking whats the point of this game? i use that as a litmus test, maybe its not for me and thats ok. Games are also a weird medium to recommend, bc yea some games take a few hours before they get good. But not everyone has the patience. Epic vid, subbed, nice moves keep it up!
Always love seeing new people join and share their thoughts! Like you said, it's all about having fun. It's like a saying I learned when I was in the music industry -- "if it sounds good, it is good", doesn't matter how nice your guitar or whatever is. Same thing with games! Yeah RE5 is a departure from the Resident Evil name in some ways, doesn't mean it's a bad time though! Excellent comment!
Disclaimer, I was not a fan of the original Devil May Cry games. In fact, I had never played them before I had played the DMC. I picked up the game when it went on sale not too long after it came out. I was very surprised at how good the game was and how much hate it was getting. Now, I can understand OG fans not liking a game changing the tone of the original But I feel like this game got way more hate than it deserved.
In terms of gameplay feel, 2022 had the release of a game called Soulstice which has gameplay inspirations from DmC. You may feel at home there for that. There's other inspirations but Soulstice is still very much its own thing. One of my personal favourites in recent years and has a lot to offer in both story and gameplay, but will admit it has points that other people have found divisive, if not outright bad. Can recommend looking it.
Everyone hated Lords of Shadow because of the music box puzzle level, but all the other levels rocked. Prince of Persia was brilliant, but somehow everyone was mad that you couldn't die. Bioshock 2 ruled but it "was just more Bioshock 1." Final Fantasy 9 was great but we all just wanted a PS2. MGS:V was amazing but we wanted an ending and got a prequel that set up an MSX game from the 80s. Hindsight can be good, actually! Except Final Fantasy 13. Dude has a bird in his hair. 😂
When i see a mass amount of people adore a game and act like it's godhood im cautious. When i see the same people tear a game a new one I'm optimistic. That says alot imo.
It's always a risk, of course. You may find yourself getting frustrated (on your own) over things that many people were complaining about online. BUT, the underdog story is always interesting to explore and I think because it does get a lot of hate, you can look at it with a different lens and at least appreciate what the game might be going for, to varying degrees of success.
@@humblemudgames I totally agree and I'm not saying that beloved games are always bad by any means but i have run in highly praised games that to my taste were mediocre, bad or awful. I just get upset sometimes that a lot of games that require more effort to be appreciated and the fun isn't instant get bashed by journalists and more casual audiences resulting in a more monotonous industry
Lords of Shadow is one of those games I just never enjoyed, I remember the general opinion on release was really good, but I got very bored after a couple levels. I felt it tried to emulate bith God of War and Shadow of the Colossus but without really commiting to either, while also emulating what Castlevania was. On the more positive side, the remake of Resident Evil 3 is one of those games i got very surprised by, it's funny people shat on it for exactly the same reasons magazines and gamers shat on the original RE3 on release, every single complaint repeated. Seems to me the game can never catch a break.😂 Edit: I wholeheartedly agree with your closing thoughts about how gamers seem to be too negative nowadays, we are living in a gooden agde of gaming like you said, but for some reason a lot of folk seem to want to either hate or love everything that comes out, even if they don't play it or were even excited to begin with. Thabk you for your positivity.
God of War was so hard to beat back then. It was immediately such a hit that even games released before it (like the Rygar reboot for example) were labeled as "God of War clones" after the fact. I've thought about deep diving into those "diet God of War games" like Rygar, Lords of Shadow, and Dante's Inferno and such. Most of those games really aren't bad, just didn't quite reach the heights GoW did, but because people have that comparison in their heads, those games look even worse. It's very reminiscent of how Doom shook up the industry when it dropped.
I really liked DMC but I also played it before I ever played any other Devil May Cry games. Having played through the year of the series, I find myself wondering if it would have done much better of it want tired to the rest of the franchise.

The first quarter of Quest 64 is a fun game with an interesting take on the genre. The second half of the game is unbalanced. Overall the boss fights are maybe too hard or feel a bit _off._ I don't know _how_ it would be done, but all the game really needs is better balance. Filling out the story would also do a lot of good. I had a perfectly normal, enjoyable time with Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World. I actually beat it. The little vignettes that reminded me of my goals and the motivations to reach those goals were very helpful to me. Does it urinate all over Tales of Symphonia? Probably, I've never played a tales game before this. Unless you count this one ps1(?) game that must be pretty obscure since I can't google it up. My point is, it's a nice shortish jrpg. I remember how the original FF7 got disproportionately (you had to be there, it was nuts) popular for a while, and received a lot of backlash years later. Then years after that people could look at the game without all the pressure and just say "FF7 was really, really good." I'm definitely guilty of jumping on the hatewagon. As for B-list games in general, it was years between reading about Lost Kingdoms in NP and actually playing it (on my Wii). That yielded one of my most sublime gaming experiences. Great game? Not sure, the non-elemental stuff is overpowered and my deck got kinda silly with cards that replenish spent cards. What it was, was everything I expected it to be and I _wanted_ everything it offered. So it was a great play. Forever Kingdom is also known as Evergrace 2. Which will scare some people off. It's just so weird and cool and the music is unlike anything outside the Evergrace games. It's fine to be a little janky. Also it's a FromSoft game so :P
I have a lot of ideas for how a Quest remake could work, in a similar way to how I shared a lot of ideas for my Gauntlet Dark Legacy video. I might do a Quest video one day like that. Quest had troubled development for a variety of reasons, but I'll save it for that video. I still love that game, warts and all. I can imagine FF7 kind of being like the Nickelback of RPGs for a while there, it was inescapable so it probably annoyed a lot of people. Undertale was kind of like that for me -- all the people talking about it and then telling me "it was inspired by some game called Earthbound, did you know that" and my jaded self was like "...do I know what Earthbound is ..." haha (I grew up with an original cartridge). So I get it. It's SO easy to be influenced by the discourse out there. Also I tried Lost Kingdoms for a few hours a year or two ago and thought it was really fun!!
@@humblemudgames If you do make a Quest 64 video I'll be right there watching it. :) I was a bit jaded about Undertale's hype too but for a different reason. Undertale was basically the only rpg since Quest 64 that I'd seen with active player movement during enemy attacks. Which I really wanted to talk to people about at the time, but it just wasn't relevant to any of the discussions. It's like being a fan of Mickey Mouse's pants but people only talk about his cartoons. XD
I enjoyed ff13 to a degree when it came out. prob wont replay it until it gets remasterd maybe lol. however The music from that trilogy is what im super thankful for. ff13-2 is one of my fav OST
ffxiii was the that i was kinda wrong. hated it before cos i cringe at the dialogs and characters. last time i played, i forced myself to stick around and changed the voices to japanese. it was the only first few hours that are cringe but i will not deny i loved the gameplay mechanics even before
I loved every Banjo game, even Nuts & Bolts. I also enjoyed Splinter Cell Conviction. I loved Xanadu Next with all its weird quirks. Dunno if that one's hated, tho. And as for a negative experience, I really dont believe any megaman X game is that fair, well designed or fun. I feel similarly with Ninja Gaiden. Nowadays, I wish I cared less about other's opinions on games, honestly. But at the same time, games are expensive and take a lot of our time, so it is impossible not to care about public opinion at all, imo.
There are a few things... 1. Taste varies from person to person... 2. There are objective measuring sticks for software, like bugs 3. There are objective measuring sticks for narrative, if you analyze a story and it self-contradicts its bad (that's 1 example, there are TONS of others) There are definitely games that are hated for no good reason, but a lot of the games that are hated are hated for VERY VALID REASONS. FF13 is objectively bad... I should never be reading through supplemental shit in the in-game dictionary to understand WTF is going on. The Characters are also terrible stereotypes... I could point out other problems with 13 (there are a lot of problems that make the game objectively terrible) but sufficive to say it's hated for a reason. You might like a game that is objectively terrible and that's ok you can like bad games; it just means you have bad taste. A lot of games are hated not so much because they are objectively bad, but because they set terrible precedents that steered once great franchises down the road to ruin... and games are getting worse. Go back and play the original God of War... It is a perfect Greek tragedy... Kratos is tricked into killing his family, sets out on revenge and in his quest for revenge becomes the monster that he was seeking to destroy. It is an objectively great story cuz it follows the rules of Greek tragedy... it's also a great game, when you compare that to the rest of the series you see what trash they are... God of War was never meant to have a sequel, Kratos story ended with the first game. The sequels are very popular and have made a ton of money, that does make them good.
I'm not going to try to refute or go back and forth with you on anything you said here but I appreciate the effort you went through to write all of that
As an RE fan 4 was my first 100% in that franchise and my last game i played was 6. I like to say thats the second era of the RE franchise. Growing up in a nerd family i knew of the og 3 but was never interested in playing myself.
I say that to say my og 3 for my generation gets sooo much hate from older players its crazy... but a piece of me wanted to know why cus in my personal life older family members excitedly enjoyed the at the time newer RE games(4-6) but as I got older and entered social media(I'm a late bloomer for that) I saw so much hate towards my beloved games by older player base.
So in an attempt to understand there concerns for the franchise i ennmersed myself in their views and honestly at larger the hate for the second era RE games is disingenuous.
RE at it core has always been a survival horror game that mirrors a late 80s to early 90s action packed B movie... the first cover alone will tell you its intentions very clearly. So you could imagine my shock when so many older players act like RE has gone off course. Their biggest complaint over the years being camera angles, atmosphere, and an lack of puzzle focus.
With these being at large their main issues i go back to RE's core and don't see any deviation but one the vehicle. When engaging with their view points i find myself thinking what would RE 1 look like if the development team had the unreal engine and i think we would get RE 6 as the result. I think the larger issue for those types of players is a mix of nostalgia and gamer fatigue. If you read between the lines of their comments i have found them saying they dont feel joy when they play or it feels too different gameplay wise therefore the game is bad. I feel like what they and a lot of these online game critics with consistent negative takes really want to say is that they just want a DLC to their "favorite games" and unfortunately us newer players get the short stick because of how thats never gonna happen. But i their head if they trash the new ones enough they might get their wish or as close as possible to it.
Still dont understand how the discourse places resident evil 5 above resident evil 6. I played both and i enjoyed 6 far more than resi 5. The action, the set pieces and jokes were far more entertaining than whatever resident evil 5 tried to do.
In a lot of cases, a game gets trashed on just because its not what people expect instead of whether the game is bad or not, for example, DMC while being a good game is not what dmc is about, dante isnt an edgy emo and dmc is about creativity and looking stylish and color coded enemies are not good for that style of games
7:10 - I played and did not enjoy FF13, but that's because i found the gameplay boring, I don't follow hype trains - I'm just not a JRPG fan. Enjoyed Super Paper Mario though.
There’s nothing I hate more than people that make opinions off of nothing. When they don’t have any backing. In other words hopping on the train just because it’s popular. Being willing to say hey I heard this but that’s just my opinion without any proper context. To come back and say I was wrong about that opinion is very honorable.
@@humblemudgamesI'm glad i found your channel through that recent viral video. I think you fill a really good spot in this genre. Hopefully you keep getting more views. Having honest, critical thinking but also not hate mongering is so important.
@@humblemudgamesI never played it but I was the footnote in the video so it did get me curious. I figured all the backlash was due to purists upset with it leaving 2D. Which to be fair is how I feel about pokemon sometimes.
Resident Evil 5 Final Fantasy X Final Fantasy 13 Diablo 3 Metal Gear Solid 2 All of them suffer from this, the only one I surprisingly have similar takes is Dark Souls 2; where for me I had a weird experience with it. Absolutely didn't and still don't and won't like it. I use it as a way to hold accountable the dev team.
Oh man dude you should try to play xenogear for ps1 and legend of legaia and if you never played megaman legends give those a try also quest 64 was amazing to me I wish it would come back or snowboard kids or jet force gemini
The most hated games that I actually liked are: Diablo 3, Halo 4, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Street Fighter 5, Unreal Tournament 3, Unreal 2, C&C Red Alert 3, Mass Effect 3. Some of these are obviously not hated anymore, but I liked them even when they were. But I'm still not that fond of the reboot Prince of Persia, FF13 (I think they're just boring games) and DMC reboot (they just ruined Dante in that one, he's so unlikable)
Yeah, I almost included Quest 64 in the thumbnail because I know it's a recognizable much-hated game, but I was like ... wait, I DIDN'T dislike it though, haha.
I enjoyed FFXIII, hated the Wii entirely and dug through many obscure games that very few people knew or played, I rarely care about old games reviews and only watch parody reviews for fun with few exceptions for modern games.
I absolutely loved the prince of Persia(2008?). I am still eating for the sequel. Also, DMC is IMHO the best devil may cry, or if not the best, shares the top with dmc3. I thought I was going to hate it because of how awful Dante looked, but everything else is far superior that other DMC titles. Also, FF XIII and XV are not that bad. XV could've become a classic if not for the rushed last act. Also, everyone says they love X but ultimately is very similar to XIII. IMHO XIII battle system is far more enjoyable and strategic than X. Narratively, it relies too much into reading the very long and boring lore, but ultimately the story is in the same level. My shit game is beyond the beyond. A decent jrpg from PS1. Definitely not a masterpiece, but nowhere as bad as the worst PS1 jrpg as some people say.
@@humblemudgames it is an ok game. I don't recommend playing it these days. If you want a game with a bad reception that is actually awesome, go for spell force 3 and it's dlc. It's basically warcraft 4 while being its own beast. Absolutely adore those games.
Dustborn is a great, Telltale-style adventure game that released about a month ago. It's just €20.99 on Steam (30% off) until September 30! The alt-right propaganda/disinformation machine hates it, though.
Especially being a Wii fan... dude it's hard for us out here. Soul Calibur Legends, Rygar Battle of Argus, even Red Steel 1 are not that bad guys.
Wait what’s the favorite tho

This is a really great attitude, I wish more people were still playing games to have fun and not to find things to criticise. Thank you for using your powers for good ☺️
Thank you! I'm trying!
And everyone that gets rude about it, can sit comfy on his middle finger (his own words)
There's so many more games that have my heart that i could mention, from as (relatively) recent as Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, Soulstice and No Straight Roads, to older titles like the entire Darksiders series (hoping the new game will be more in line with 1 and 2!), Kya: Dark Lineage for PS2 and the Rayman games.
12:00 agreed. Just because it's not a10/10 doesn't mean it is 0/10. Mid games are rarely garbage and can have really cool elements.
Buck Bumble on N64, Geist on GCN, and Evolution Worlds on GCN. Just some more niche recommendations.
Evolution Worlds and Geist are on my list of games I'd like to check out, 100%.
Many times Sheva would stand right in front of my gun when I played RE5, lol. It's certainly much more fun with a human player than the AI.
I'm surprised at some of the games or media i grew up loving only to find out almost everyone at the time hated it.
that was Quest for me, especially
That’s why I don’t try to review to much or bash games, cause young people who likes new stuff it can be hard for them
@@okvvvvvvvvvvvvv I will review games I don't like but yeah i try not to bash.
You better believe it
The DMC reboot was an absolute blast on higher difficulties.
Just to note: Team Ninja are the ones with Dynasty Warriors, Nioh and Ninja Gaiden.
Ninja Theory are the droids you are looking for 😊
@ElTequilla Ahh, indeed! I occasionally get my Ninja studios confused 😅

Oh man i loved DMC. The game was fun and that soundtrack was amazing. I actually saw combichrist live.
I bet Combichrist was sick
@@humblemudgamesyou have no idea. They opened for Ramstein too.

barely a minute into this video, but I just had to chime in and give major props for mentioning GameTalk. It was my very first internet home and nobody ever seems to bring it up
I feel like no one talks about it either!
People don't realize that they want AA games, but they laugh off AA games a lot of the time when they actually see them 🤷♂️
its a FuRyu production, not SE, though the dev team did have SE allumni on it
i have recently bought it and played it, im saddened that cause of the overally harsh critical reception we may not get a sequel cause damn, this has some good foundations for a continuation.
Nothing will make you enjoy gaming more than avoiding discussions of games on social media.
Yup, even after making this video, I fell into a trap with a game. Picked it up weeks later and was like, why did I stop playing, this is awesome!
I’ve never heard of a better description of Twitter 💀
I wrote that line with very little thought and the footage of RE5 and Sonic Adventure fit what I was saying so much that I never looked back haha
@@humblemudgames LOL we love lucky convenient bits like that. It’s like the universe is on your side for a split second
It's not everyday that i get to meet a fellow Zen: Intergalactic Ninja connoisseur. Great vid btw!

I've always wanted to try Blur
Blur and Split/Second, too.
Freaking loved this video the moment I heard Legend of Dragoon in the intro background!
Ah, so you liked it from the beginning eh? I love LoD, if you stick around you'll hear plenty of music from that game!
That video alone worth the whole internet bill ♥
Don't buy games based on other people's takes, be they critics or friends. We all go into a game looking for certain things, elements which appeal to us. It's all subjective. One man's trash is another's mans treasure as the saying goes. Like what you like & f**k all the haters. They are only opinions, not facts. Value the opinion that matters most, your own. You don't have to be rude, you can value another perspective without it changing your own.
I felt the same about Darksiders 3 the game is criminally underrated
I've always wanted to play Darksiders but haven't yet
I used to be one of those "games arent fun anymore" people. Not anymore since I started retro gaming. Older games just hit different

This is such a great video!
13 had Snow, right? I came to that game right after doing Saints row.. 3. Same voice as main character male. Really enjoyed his work.
I played Final Fantasy XIII last year after bouncing off it when it first came out and I enjoyed the experience for what it was
Yup couldn't agree more. Some of my biggest letdowns come from games that are massively praised on the internet (while some of my all-time faves are regularly dismissed), if I'd only cared about the popular opinions that get parroted around then my gaming life would've been much less enjoyable.
And steam ratings are only yes of no so games become overhyped very fast
Clicked on video because I will always preach about how good DmC:DMC is. This one made me love the whole franchise, but it started here, and with listening to a whole lot of Combichrist. Never surrender!
I think most of the games I grew up loving the most were always hated by most critics 😂 as long as you’re having fun with it that’s what important
Fun is the most important factor to me, absolutely!!
I wanna play W3 so badly but the combat simply sucks
Someone once told me it was still leagues better than Zelda’s combat lmao
But I love the souls games and soulslikes and also jrpgs combat usually and actual fighting games like super smash melee so I feel I’m pretty easy to please.
Knights in the nightmare did have a reputation of being one of the most overly complicated and hardest RPGs which is kind of true but I think that's only because of how unique and weird it was and it's worth checking it out just for that
I mean can you point me another game that is both a grid base strategy bullet hell RPG.....
That linkin park reference caught me off guard 💀
In fact, when I recently went back and started playing X, I even found myself thinking: "wait, this is super linear too, why don't people hate this like XIII?"
I can also recognise these feelings about games in myself.
@@humblemudgames I definitely will-
My fave video on the overall "decline" of Pokemon was Internet Pitstop's video about region design.
It is sad that so many works of art receive so much hatred for just because they didn't sell well or appease IGN or "video game critics"
the 5.9 score that's in my thumbnail is from IGN's review of Alien Isolation. What a badddddd take on that game, lol
I'm a person that plays games on what I think looks good, what really upsets me is when good games have bad press and it kills the chance of a sequel or additional content.
The perception of Majora's Mask changed so much over the years. It went from a mediocre Ocarina of Time sequel to the greatest Zelda game of all time.
A very beautiful video and one that I immediately related to because I am in your exact position right now, young but older and conciliating the adult with the inner child and my particular views and tastes with those of the world around me. This was an immediate subscribe.👍
Hey, I'm glad you can relate and I'm glad you're having a good time with games lately. I hope you choose to stick around!
Time is a valuable thing. Glad to know our brains do the same thing when we hear that phrase. Lol
YES. SUPER PAPER MARIO. i only found out recently that it was hated when i said i wished it had been remade instead of story Mario rpg.
Best Paper Mario story and villain imo. 🤷♂️
DmC is one of my favorites 🔥🔥
That's because you know quality 🤙 Good to see you, man!
This is how I feel about Dynowarz, it's a much more fun game when you can do that!
If my profile picture doesn't give it away.
I personally Love Final Fantasy XIII.
Love this! Thanks for the video
I played RE5 and FF13 back when they released on PS3 and I liked them :D
Everyone hated Lords of Shadow because of the music box puzzle level, but all the other levels rocked. Prince of Persia was brilliant, but somehow everyone was mad that you couldn't die. Bioshock 2 ruled but it "was just more Bioshock 1." Final Fantasy 9 was great but we all just wanted a PS2. MGS:V was amazing but we wanted an ending and got a prequel that set up an MSX game from the 80s. Hindsight can be good, actually!
Except Final Fantasy 13. Dude has a bird in his hair. 😂
I think the little bird is so cute but yes logically speaking -- birds poop a lot 😅
Bioshock 2 is undeniable proof that gamers were just wrong and somethings take time to be fully appreciated.
Ff13 is great to play one time, no replay value sadly, great lore tho
Sometimes a self-contained story is all you need!
@@humblemudgames i mean yeah but compared to ff 3,6,12 is sad, the replay value of those is insane
12:44 :D:D
skies? it's a classic
Seems to me the game can never catch a break.😂
Edit: I wholeheartedly agree with your closing thoughts about how gamers seem to be too negative nowadays, we are living in a gooden agde of gaming like you said, but for some reason a lot of folk seem to want to either hate or love everything that comes out, even if they don't play it or were even excited to begin with.
In terms of gameplay feel, 2022 had the release of a game called Soulstice which has gameplay inspirations from DmC. You may feel at home there for that.

The first quarter of Quest 64 is a fun game with an interesting take on the genre. The second half of the game is unbalanced. Overall the boss fights are maybe too hard or feel a bit _off._
I don't know _how_ it would be done, but all the game really needs is better balance.
Then years after that people could look at the game without all the pressure and just say "FF7 was really, really good."
I'm definitely guilty of jumping on the hatewagon.
I was a bit jaded about Undertale's hype too but for a different reason.
2. There are objective measuring sticks for software, like bugs
3. There are objective measuring sticks for narrative, if you analyze a story and it self-contradicts its bad (that's 1 example, there are TONS of others)
There are definitely games that are hated for no good reason, but a lot of the games that are hated are hated for VERY VALID REASONS.
Super Paper Mario rocks, right?? Earned my respect!
Tony Hawks last 2 outings Project 8 and Proving Grounds are the best in the series but are constantly getting throw around as if they suck
That 1st few minutes is on point! Look at me i hate mario 64, final fantasy 7, doom, Zelda, metal gear solid! Ooooooooo how edgy.🤦🏻♂️
Forspoken was a perfectly okay game killed by politics before it even came out.
There’s nothing I hate more than people that make opinions off of nothing. When they don’t have any backing. In other words hopping on the train just because it’s popular. Being willing to say hey I heard this but that’s just my opinion without any proper context. To come back and say I was wrong about that opinion is very honorable.
It's a big reason why i stopped using all, except UA-cam, social media. I just make sure i curate what i watch so it's not hate train stuff
I felt really bad about Castlevania 64, so I wanted to redeem myself with this video. It really taught me a valuable lesson which I'm thankful for.
Resident Evil 5
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy 13
Diablo 3
Metal Gear Solid 2
All of them suffer from this, the only one I surprisingly have similar takes is Dark Souls 2; where for me I had a weird experience with it.
I LOVE Mega Man Legends 💜
The most hated games that I actually liked are: Diablo 3, Halo 4, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Street Fighter 5, Unreal Tournament 3, Unreal 2, C&C Red Alert 3, Mass Effect 3. Some of these are obviously not hated anymore, but I liked them even when they were.
But I'm still not that fond of the reboot Prince of Persia, FF13 (I think they're just boring games) and DMC reboot (they just ruined Dante in that one, he's so unlikable)
Oh or i hate when someone makes a video, not you, saying WE MADE A MISTAKE. Like no. You did. You jumped on the hate wagon. I didn't.
Thanks for checking this video out, it's cool to see someone else who appreciates these games! I'll look into Beyond the Beyond
