I finished playing RE4 for the first time 3 hours ago and then this comes up in my recommended. That FBI agent really had my back on this one, thanks Allen.
Right? I played the Gamecube version a ton, the PS2 a bunch, and I have been playing the PC release on and off since the start of the pandemic. Never got to play the Wii version though. Such a good game!
you think that's bad, try playing La noire, and then Honest hearts, and finding idiot bethesda turned one of their best VA's into a generic complaining farmer in fallout 4, the fallout we dont talk about
Resident Evil 4 also features gaming's greatest tragedy: Leon loses his jacket after the first level. Also I love how when Luis jokes about having psychic powers, Leon looks at him expecting him to elaborate. I just always found that funny, like the guy's first day as a cop he experienced a zombie outbreak so to him that line doesn't even seem out of place.
precisely! leon looked badass with the jacket on! fortunately, if you like playing mercenaries if you press a certain button when you choose leon, he has the jacket on! voilà!
I like the idea of them making a game, saying "This is straying away too far away from what the fracnchise is, let's make it its own game!" instead of just slapping the title in to try and sell more. So much more respectful. We need more of this kind of mentality.
Agreed. Change is needed, but sometimes change is too much.. Being able to turn that excessively different thing into its own identity is resourceful, making use of an idea that may otherwise have been lost.
@@kyoutasan3506 Cause dmc1 came from re4 lol. Dmc1 would never have been made if the director wasn't smart enough to recognize it could stand on it's own.
@Emo Gamer R 18 Well, they did, but the gameplay style of Wacky Wahoo Pizza Man would have been too much for the setting of RE, even his more muted debut.
The story of this game is fucking hilarious. I always thought it's super funny some people treat it as a super serious drama. This game is just perfection.
Old school games knew how to do this. The tone of this game is almost like mortal kombat. It's something about ripping off a guys head with the spine still attached and transforming people into a baby in the same game. I think modern Capcom doesn't get this and I don't think the remake will do justice
@jub8891 actually it takes itself very seriously. Thats the key in games like this. It never steps back to break the fourth wall and make fun of itself like in the MCU or Forspoken. It is sincere in its campy nature and will tell its story whether you like it or not.
@@TheSphereHunter All RE movies were. It is pretty much impossible to convert what made RE a great game into a movie. RE works when you're in control, not when you're watching. 😄
@@ch3cksund3ad hell no. Village was amazing and it’s got so much lore. It’s the entire reason Spencer even created umbrella and the virus in the first place
I also never had an issue with Ashley. There are WAY worse "escort" characters in games. This was a revolutionary game, and I've loved it ever since I played the demo prior to its release.
Usually if Ashley dies it's the players fault for not paying attention to her. She'll stay right behind you, dodge your gunfire, you can tell her to wait in safe spots, and enemies will grab her and not kill her. It's not like Goldeneye where you have a 80% chance of failing the Natalia missions because she walked into a hailstorm of bullets.
Funny thing is, she fixes the problem some people had with this game; "there is not tension, its too easy"...plus, I remember some people seriously complaining about her ears...
@@Jose-se9pu Doesn't really fix it. For people that are not a fan of the type of gameplay Ashley offers that "tension" would turn I to annoyance very quickly.
@@lameboy_advance I am aware, I jest. Let's just say, making research into police brutality searching for inspiration for vicious satire in the game review I am working on currently left a bad taste, and I needed to vent some of the bile.
@@atomic747 small gripe tho. Yeah it's too 2021 of them and glaring if you know the original, but man is that remake fantastic. I find it really cool that even though the two never met, Leon is aware of Wesker and how dangerous he could possibly be while Wesker is aware that Leon is one of the few who survived the chaos of Raccoon City and wants him eliminated thanks to the experience and training Leon has received. Really killer video, BTW. Always love more RE content.

If I had a nickel every time someone assumed that Ashley was underage in this comment section, I have three nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s funny that it happened thrice. Also, awesome video Suzi!
Yep, there are files in which she is mentioned as returning from “Massachusetts”, so not sure why that was changed in newer versions. Makes total sense that a President’s daughter would likely go to Harvard/MIT, legacy or otherwise.
My friends and I always lovingly called the Merchant “Blue” due to the blue flames that accompany his locations. Also the urge to yell “you’re my boy blue!” any time he showed up was too easy to not say
I've never had that urge, so I've no idea what you're talking about there. the urge when you see the merchant is to repeatedly quote all of his lines over and over until you leave him.
After RE4 remake's reveal, I started obsessing over RE4 yet again, watching any random video about RE4 or the remake, and I stumbled upon this video. It was just a joy to watch this video that goes into meticulous detail about every little thing I love about this game, even if I already know almost everything about this game, though I learned several new things. I also had no idea RE4 VR was such a drastically different experience, and now I feel obligated to buy a VR headset. I've never seen a bigger fan of RE4, so of course I'm going to have to subscribe.
A bigger fan would've known that ada is revealed in chief Mendez house in the original. She said the bottle cap of ada spoils her reveal but that's just not true because we get to see her very early in the game.
RE4 on Quest is one of the very best VR games that there is. I'm not saying get a Quest 2 just to play it, but... You should absolutely play it if you get a chance. Completely changed my mind about flat-to-VR ports, and realized they can be amazing if they are done well, and RE4 is the best example of how to do it right...the only other one as good is the Halflife 2 VR mod. Also played Village on PSVR2, and it was really fun, but not nearly as good of a VR conversion as RE4.
It's crazy what they were able to pull out of a rocky development cycle, how damn polished and handcrafted the game is while having, to that point, the largest scope in the franchise. I remember the launch of this game like it was yesterday. I made it to Chapter 1-2, paused the game, called my friends and cancelled dinner that night, looked at the screen, and realized that I was playing the best video game since Super Metroid. I knew at the time i was playing something absurdly good, but that was also a stretch from 1988-2005 filled with absurdly good games. The difference between some of those and RE4 is that RE4's idiosyncrasies means it still holds up and feels as crunchy and well designed as it ever did. The stop and pop gunplay and stagger melee attacks, funny enough, are what froze it in amber to not be compared with modern cover or mobility shooters. It feels, in 2021, exactly as your 16 year memory of it does. It's almost arcade-like in the way it's takes such a small number of perfect interactions and keeps remixing, and remixing, and remixing. A quality Capcom could never replicate in the follow-ups. Brilliant game.
Not just Capcom sadly, most major game giants went down the same road. Unfinished, glitchy games, stuff lock behind paywalls, pay to win... That's just the way game industry is right now.
As someone who just got into this series a few years ago, I didn’t find Ashley annoying at all. Before 8 came out I decided it was time to play all the games and so I did. Oops now I’m hooked forever. I didn’t really struggle with keeping Ashley safe and I think it’s refreshing to have a girl who does need help and isn’t a martial arts master and sharpshooter. She was at a sorority party like 20 minutes ago, of course she’s helpless. Now I’m playing 4 again and enjoying Ashley traipsing around in her suit of armor
I agree that Ashley's not bad. Her AI is really good at staying out of the way. IMO the people who hate Ashley were either very bad at the game or only played it once, so they remember her screaming a lot more than she actually does once you're competent at managing her status.
As far as escort missions go, I'll say Ashley is easily one of the best (or the best) in any game ever. I had no problem (even enjoyed) protecting her, and to this day always find it fun and challenging. All those who complained clearly sucked in strategizing and protecting her. Not to mention I never once found her annoying, and I've seen way more annoying characters in other games. She doesn't deserve the hate she gets, if any, they could've developed her character in a sequel ala Sarah Conner style (Terminator 1 and Terminator 2). ;-)
Also, I actually find Ashley really unique when it comes to escorting, strategizing and protecting NPCs. I've never seen any other game accomplish such a manageable escort NPC to what RE4 did. When hordes of enemies show up, Ashley would hide behind Leon immediately and huddle behind him constantly as you spray bullets even in full circle direction spin. She'd even duck if in a particular spot or corner (depending on your decision) if in line of fire or if she was saved from capture, she would immediately rush behind you. And seeing her drive a bulldozer is pretty rad and something she deserves more credit for, and indeed plays a crucial role in helping Leon get to places that's not possible without her. Wouldn't surprise me if most complains on Ashley is result of failing protect her. They just suck at escort missions. ;-)
@@mr.sinjin-smyth Absolutely agree! I try to play RE5,but Sheva keeps getting in the way! I really wish Capcom had her just die and respawn in the next stage, with Chris finding a different way instead. Seriously we have remasters of RE5 and Capcom didn’t fix Sheva!
The ending credits sequence makes me so sad for the Ganados. They were just a little community doing what they could to thrive and then Sadler came and destroyed that peace through his experiments and religious exploitation. And then Leon just comes through and, while in self defense, decimates them. That, to me, is the scary part of the game. How a single person can manipulate a population to their destruction.
Agreed... the first time I watched the End Credits for RE4, I was overwhelmed with sadness. The art and track clearly illustrated an isolated, peaceful society that was destroyed by one man's ambition for power.
I was so happy for beating RE4 the first time when the credits rolled, and I was just a kid then, so I remember I started crying and didn't touch the game for months, RE4 is truly an experience
Resident Evil 4 is the definition of a game that would not really be deemed "Retro" as least for a very long time, as it will stand the test of time forever. Any game that has been Remastered more than once or given a Remake will always be considered fundamentally everlasting because Videogame such as these are always amazing no matter what.
I feel like Ashley suffered the same meme-ification as Louis from Left 4 Dead. In game neither are actually that annoying but some isolated voice lines got out of control. Actual gameplay, Ashley is the best escort ever. She locks behind Leon in combat so you can both see her location and not accidentally shoot her. She also snaps behind Leon when walking so you can still see her in the corner and, most importantly, is the same speed as Leon. Being able to tell her to stop, follow and hide is all she needed. Not to mention, the piercing shrieks are themselves a game mechanic - a player needs to be able to quickly tell whether Ashley is in trouble and hear her over gunfire. Not to mention, Ashley is cute and quirky. I really like her ears and face with a slightly wider nose than the rest of the women. It gives her more personality and it's nice to not have the same copy-pasted women in games.
This is the only explanation that makes any sense. Seriously, people keep acting like she's somehow bad when she has the single best ai I've seen for any sort of escort type gameplay. She is extremely good at actually staying out of the way and LETTING you save her, while never actually endangering herself. It's only really if you put her in a bad situation. The only times she's even slightly difficult is if you JUST so happen to have been moving fast enough for her to fall behind enough that she can't snap behind you when you turn around to start gunning - _and_ she also happens to crouch down infront of too many enemies for you to handle at once. Or if you just pull a free-wheeling 180 no-scope with a shotgun/tmp before she can crouch. Both are really fucking easy situations to not get into. I first played this game when I was 8 and it was the first game I'd even played a game with a 3rd person camera or manual 3D aiming, but somehow by the time I got to Ashley I never had issues with her. So I think you're right. It HAS to be the voice clips. And to me no voice clips can even come close to the pure AGONY that is shit escort-mission AI (hello Farcry Blood Dragon, hello Skyrim, hello ALL OF DEAD RISING ONE)
@@PhyreI3ird I loved how in RE4 if you pointed your gun at Ashley she'd immediately duck out of the way. I also loved how she would snap to your shoulder and stay out of the way (you know, like a real person would). I have to agree that Ashley's AI is basically perfect, I don't recall ever having issues with her. Her behavior felt natural, and she never felt "in the way" of the gameplay. She felt like a genuine addition to the game and story. Which is weird that RE4 got it so perfect, and yet I recall in RE5 the AI characters constantly running right in front of your cursor and just standing there getting pelted with bullets. Its as if no game after RE4 have managed to get this kind of escort AI even remotely right.
@@jameso2290 I do wonder about that. I'm guessing making active (as opposed to Ashley who I guess I'd call "defensive") companion AI has to be WAAAAY more complicated than escort or enemy AI. Because not only are they having to react to the player, they're also having to interact with all the enemies at the same time, and somehow not interfere too much with either. I also wonder if RE5 was legitimately the first time any devs at capcom had to make a functional active-companion AI. I don't know of any other game they did something like that with, so I can understand why it turned out so bad. Even old school Bungie who got so lauded for their revolutionary ai, had some of the dumbest fucks ever being your companions in fights. However with Dead Rising, HOW did they mess that up when they had access to the same stuff that made Ashley work so well in the same role as the survivors? I can't think of any excuse for that, that was just a travesty lol
@@PhyreI3ird Susie in their video on the topic (I think) suggest it was a deliberate design choice in line with the consumers=zombies motif of the setting. Isabella has rather strong AI after all.
Considering escort missions in previous games are often disastrous, Ashley is brilliant! Seriously, if you learn her mechanics, which are simple, she's not an issue. She gets behind you and ducks when necessary. She's also immune to your roundhouse kicks which are very powerful! Proceed slowly but steadily!
I still managed to execute her in the water room because she doesn't automatically move away from where the gun is pointed, which seems reasonable since the ganados do it regularly themselves.
Not sure how it took me this long tofigure this out, but watching this video I realized that RE 8 has a lot of RE 4's DNA in it. It has the frantic village section, the castle, the group of snarky villains who all work for one mastermind, the focus on action and gunplay, the mysterious merchant who you get most of your resources from, and the protagonist being infected with the same thing as the enemies.
When I was a kid I played this game with a friend who lived in a forest in germany and it was autumn. We were like 11 and that village took every bit of courage from us. Man we couldn't even hide in reality since that shit looked the same. Most immersive horror xp I've had would pay money to feel that scared again.

That safe room theme really brings me back too, I've got fond memories attached to it when I was a teenager, also spent so much time just chilling in these rooms, admiring the sceneries, graphics and Leon's hair physics lol. That game means so much to me, it's probably in my top 3 best memories on a video game for sure
Ashley was fine. I just told her to hide in the garbagebin -where she belongs- and I proceeded to play the game. Also her interactions with Leon were cute
When I was a kid I saw my dad fall off a ladder with a chainsaw in hand at full throttle, he landed on his back and somehow kept the thing away from ripping his chest apart. Years later when playing this game the mere sight of those guys coming at you with those things always made me twitch a bit, by far the enemy I hated the most.
guess that's a dad thing to do... mine did that as well but he was lucky to have one of those chainsaws where you had to hold down 2 triggers for it to work
The best narration of RE4 ever. Such a fantastic game, I remember getting it when it first came out and loving every second, even the weird legend of Zelda parts in the castle lol.

You're telling me that the slide puzzle in Ashley's section is that easy!? You just need to rotate the external pieces? I always spent minutes trying to solve that one. I hate that kind of puzzles in any game. Great video! I love to hear how much you love this games
I recently bought this game on Ps4 and even though the Controllers were difficult to relearn, I'm still surprised how well it manages to stay through time, definitely a gem
The only problem with the PS4 version is that the QTE sequences werent meant to run at 60fps, so while on the PC version you can change the framerate to 30fps...on PS4, you better mash those buttons!
@@Jose-se9pu I didn't have an issue with the QuickTime events on ps4, the only thing 60fps affects is it disjoints the sniper reload animation which isn't really that much of an issue.
This game helped me cope up after my dad passed away. It was almost like a friend, I almost get teared up thinking about that memory. I was 16 at that time and had to come to terms with not only my father's passing, but also having to shoulder the burden to support my family from that day forward. This series is so closely related to death to me, it seems whenever I lose someone close it coincides with me playing a game from this franchise, ironic. I've only ever finished the game once, but this video has encouraged me to go for another playthrough. Thank you Resident Evil and The Sphere Hunter for this video ❤
I played this game throughout my dads dying stages and it was genuinely the only thing that was able to help occupy my mind long enough to escape the reality of it all. This game holds a very special place in my heart.
I also appreciate that you pointed out Ashley is not a bad character at all. She will give the player zero trouble if the player knows how to hide her at safe spots. Also, I ship Leon and Ashley. I love that Shinji Mikami, the father of the series, stepped in when the previous iterations failed. He was just like "Alright fuckers, this is how it's done." The man is such a chad he changed games forever fucking twice. If you ask me he's one of the most under appreciated artists of our time.
Agreed. He deserves more credit. Kojima and Fumito Ueda rightfully get praised as the geniuses they are but Mikami is up there. Hugo Martin is the best American game director btw. Revived DOOM and then made the best game of all time DOOM Eternal
They never failed. How could 3.5 fail if it was never released. In his latest interview talking about RE4 shinji said: RE4 was changed because the gaming industry was shifting towards more action games, the team behind RE4 had to adapt to modern fans and make the game as accessible as possible, capcom was going through a bad financial period and RE4 was literally the only hope to save the company. hence why they made an action game to boost sales and not a survival horror game as mikami would like with 3.5.

Resident evil 4 took me on an adventure. From the village, to the sewers, to the castle, mines, the army stronghold island, to the science labs. It was amazing, n to this day i still consider it to be one of the best if not the best time i had playing a videogame. Serenity (RE4 merchant theme) puts me at ease every time i hear it. Theme at the end of the video
I don’t consider Serenity an “ease” track.. I consider it an emotional track that gives the game vulnerability and makes the player emotionally bond with the game. All great Resident Evil games do this.
"sorry i didnt mean to go down memory lane, RE4 just does that to me" I think most people born in the late 80's and 90's feel the same. I didn't even like RE4 much as a kid, but I knew so many people who did that it's weaved through many years of my adolescence. I did end up falling in love with the game in my later teenage years when the game was ported to other consoles and I was finally able to play it.
I love this game for what it did for games, but I hate it for what it did for RE. After that we got completely stupid titles for 11 years straight. Fuck RE4 and its stupid giant mechanic mini-Napoleon statue. The castle setting was fun to play, but it made no sense at all.

7:09 - Yay! Sphere Hunter herself makes a cameo! Also, I sort of wish Capcom would go back to retrieve Resident Evil 1.5 and 3.5 from the vaults and finish them to release as some sort of non-canon RE title that really isn't meant to be a 4-star game, but still worth playing by the fans just for curiosity's sake. 8:10 - The memories of buying certain games in our earlier years, eh?
To be fair, Leon had an inkling that Ada was still alive after she had thrown him the rocket launcher in RE2. And I guess he suspected even more when learning about the rumors of her working with Wesker.
This game was made way back when the whole "which scenario order is canon" and Leon A/Claire B was the accepted "canon" by a vast majority of fans. It was only way after RE4 was made that the canon scenario order was made definite. Capcom always used to shrug when asked, but kept leaning more for Leon A to be canon. It was only after RE4 that Leon B being canon started being a more popular and accepted choice from fans. I guess fans just wanted Claire to be more badass and be the one to fight the Super Tyrant and Final Birkin.
@@Donlad222 Which probably made it look even more weird that Leon mentioned that he thought she was dead. People who haven't played all of re2 were probably like, "the hell is he talking about?"
Yeah, the “Ada? Is that you?” line in OG re2 shows that he knew someone threw him the launcher but wasn’t sure if it was Ada, moreso if Ada made it out alive later on. The novelised version of RE4 called Biohazard 4 also talks about how he heard from the govt that Ada was still alive and working for Wesker but he wanted to blieve it was wrong. His gut was right tho because Ada did “work” for Wesker, but betrayed him by giving him the wrong sample.
@@paige2496 yup. And why wouldn't Leon have thought it was Ada when he heard her voice right before she tossed him the weapon in RE2. I guess apart of him always knew that she was alive.
58:08 - I got the 'secret' cutscene for following Mendez into the bedroom (shown at 36:36) on my first playthrough, so I was waiting for Ada to show up for ages and was confused as to why Leon didn't recognise Ada during the castle encounter before she took off her glasses. I imagine he didn't see who did the shooting and Leon is a himbo who probably didn't think too much about it.
This was the scariest game to me as a kid. I think it’s the perfect balance of action and horror. Always keeps you in your toes but will occasionally make you jump off of them in fear 😂
As a kid, the re-playability of RE4 was absolutely LEGENDARY. Once I was done with that entire rollercoaster ride, it would feel REFRESHING to start all over again. That game is literally art.
you know, I recently found your channel through mutual's on twitter and my god - the effort you put into these videos is astounding and worth praising, and the eyepatch wolf cameo is just golden. Keep it up.
What an amazing game. I've been on a whole RE series binge this whole month, and still find myself coming back to this game. With 4 Remake being announced, I just hope they keep a lot of the campy stuff from this one with the escalating levels of absurdity. I'm sure they want to go down the more creepy and serious route, and even if it somehow ends up getting the RE3R treatment...I will still gladly play it. I'll be crying the whole time, but I'll still play it.
Just a small thing: if you go back to the room where you met "Big Cheese" the first time, you trigger a cutscene where Ada saves you and it foreshadows her
Truly, RE4 was, and still is, a life-changing game.. I haven't played it in years, but every time I watch your vids, Sphere, I recall everything perfectly. The shock and awe booting it for the first time, the mind-blowing fun, the dread, and everything surrounding me, my CRT TV, and my brother's Gamecube. Many all-nighters and early mornings with Leon and Ashley. The sheer amount of times I played this game as a kid is insane to think about. I even got a UA-cam following making all sorts of videos of my playing RE4 way back around 2007.. Shout outs to anyone who remembers me as SavageT1337! XD What a shame I deleted my account right as it was all kicking off but I am always stoked to watch your videos, Sphere! Much love, girl!!
RE4 seemed like the perfect storm. It just nailed all the elements that make an excellent action-horror third person shooter title. I think it all just comes down to great design and amazing vision, not necessarily one particular aspect. The first thing is that the shooting feels psychologically satisfying. It was as if Mikami and his team decided to start making a game just based on the idea of making shooting as satisfying and fun as possible. And damn, how they succeeded. Everything from the laser reticle, to reloading animations, enemy hit reactions, poping sound of a headshot, even the intensity and moments of time at which the gamepad vibrates. Top that with the aspect of crowd control, which takes some time getting used to, and which makes you always be on your toes. Then there's the excellent level design, great inventory system, great in-game economy, an upgrade system that is pretty much a steady drip of serotonin, and incredible sound design. Also, the game has masterful pacing. The ebb and flow of the game is superb. The high intensity action and big set-pieces are mixed with periods of exploration, treasure hunting, inventory management, light enemy encounters, light puzzle solving, It's all here. There's plenty of opportunity to really take in the experience and absorb the world that it creates. All of the explosive set-pieces were earned. For every cabin fight or military island attack, you had a half dozen 'catch your breath' and tension building areas, and these areas never outstayed their welcome. The other thing is that the enemies, and the enemy encounters are so well done. Every battle feels like a scenario that has been planned out meticulously, the way the enemies seem to hem you in and force you on the back foot, the way they escalate and have you on the edge of your seat, the way the environments are used to create a unique encounter each time. It perfectly utilizes each combat arena with specific gimmicks and creative hazards. The game is so good at creating this environment for player freedom and experimentation, while also making the enemies capable enough to push new combat experiences through their varied actions. It's designed in such a way that you could probably watch twenty people play one part and see it play out almost twenty different ways. The level design, melee attacks, enemy reactions, and arsenal of unique weapons contribute heavily to the variable approach to combat, and offer a lot of replay value and stories to share. And what’s insane is that all of this is done with the same basic mechanics that you had since chapter 1. To top it all off the game has memorable boss battles as well. I still can't decide whether RE4 is the game of that generation or Metroid Prime. RE4 was also the game that basically graduated Mikami and his team into the hall of the game design gods.
Your comment is comprehensive and perfect. I completely agree. RE4 from beginning to end is a laser focused quality experience. It revolutionized over the shoulder 3rd person shooters. We got other instant classics like Dead Space 1 and 2 and The Last of Us.
@@Uruk02 after seeing threemake, i have no hope left in capcom. add the fact that they completly got rid of proper B scenarios and gave claire and leon 3 interactions troughout twomake. if they remake it, give it better graphics, give leon the ability to walk and aim, and throw 5 times as many enemys my way if you feel like penalizing me, but just get rid of the stand still aiming, the rest should stay exactly the same.
By the way, Leon’s main handgun the silver ghost, was inspired by the USP pistol by Heckler and Koch. Ryoma Jyoshin the weapon designer has noted the inspiration was USP.
The most ridiculous part of this game is how much the villains love journaling. Also, i think Salazar has progeria, and probably a bunch of other maladies, because if he's descended from some sort of royalty, he may be a tad inbred, so Sadler was likely able to entice him with the promise of parasite induced vigor.
Yep, at least when RE did lore dumps in the past, they felt like the authors toiled off the contents for days at a time. In RE4, most files (the Clock Tower puzzle) feel like they were scribbled down moments before Leon arrived…
I always thought his old man look was because his family took part in some inbreeding in the past I keep forgetting he looked his age until Saddler gave him a dose of Plagas
But what proof of that is there in game? Even if you go by that portrait in the gallery, it's probable he was painted to look his best. Not to mention you don't see many normal 20 year olds that are the size of a child.
The first time I ever played an RE game was RE4 when I was a kid, no clue what age exactly, but one of the staff in the hospital I was in brought in a GameCube I think? A bunch of us kids were passing the controller every time we died and I was the lucky little fucker who had the honour of dying to Dr. Bagman first. I know his name is Salvadore but I'll never stop thinking of him as Dr. Bagman with his instrument of loud and screaming death.
Obviously this isn't what you meant, but I love the phrase, "...passing the controller every time we died...." in the context of you being in a hospital with a bunch of other kids.
@@devindalton4688 It gets worse when I clarify it wasn't a normal hospital, it was a mental health behavior center. Place felt like Umbrella owned it sometimes.

Amazing how old Capcom wouldn't waste good ideas just because they're not a fit for a certain franchise. Like Devil May Cry and Haunting Grounds are great on their own, but RE4 is a top shelf classic. Early 2000s Capcom was able to make 3 games out of one development!

I didn’t mind Ashley until the castle portion of the game
@@heathenpride7931 I’ll take Ashley over Sheeva anyday!

@ph34r inovade flashback to re5 where the civilians were beating the shit out of someone in a bag
Agreed... the first time I watched the End Credits for RE4, I was overwhelmed with sadness. The art and track clearly illustrated an isolated, peaceful society that was destroyed by one man's ambition for power.
I was so happy for beating RE4 the first time when the credits rolled, and I was just a kid then, so I remember I started crying and didn't touch the game for months, RE4 is truly an experience
lol that sounded like angry joe for a secs there
Ahhh, yes. Feel sad when i read about ndipaya tribe from RE 5. That spencer, THAT MOTHERFUCKING SPENCER.
The original is still a masterpiece but damn... that remake is SO GOOD
I feel like Ashley suffered the same meme-ification as Louis from Left 4 Dead.
Never forget those adorable first pumps she does after you shoot a Ganado.

I recently bought this game on Ps4 and even though the Controllers were difficult to relearn, I'm still surprised how well it manages to stay through time, definitely a gem
The original concept for this game looks so dope I hope they make it one day
The only problem with the PS4 version is that the QTE sequences werent meant to run at 60fps, so while on the PC version you can change the framerate to 30fps...on PS4, you better mash those buttons!

Sorry for your loss, re4 has fantastic replay value so i hope you have fun!
Sorry for your loss man .
I played this game throughout my dads dying stages and it was genuinely the only thing that was able to help occupy my mind long enough to escape the reality of it all. This game holds a very special place in my heart.
The SuperEyepatchWolf running cameo has to be one of the best running jokes in this series.
WDYM cameo. He's about srs bzn.
I also appreciate that you pointed out Ashley is not a bad character at all. She will give the player zero trouble if the player knows how to hide her at safe spots. Also, I ship Leon and Ashley. Ada is mysterious and all but she's been teasing Leon for 20 years. I mean, how many 20 years does anyone have in life? Ashley is brave, lovely and an awesome bulldozer driver. If I were Leon I'd totally choose Ashley over Ada.
Me too man. I despise all the hate ashley’s getting. Like bro get gud at the game

I love that Shinji Mikami, the father of the series, stepped in when the previous iterations failed. He was just like "Alright fuckers, this is how it's done."
The man is such a chad he changed games forever fucking twice. If you ask me he's one of the most under appreciated artists of our time.
Imagine god hand 2 😭
Shinji is a living legend.
Agreed. He deserves more credit. Kojima and Fumito Ueda rightfully get praised as the geniuses they are but Mikami is up there. Hugo Martin is the best American game director btw. Revived DOOM and then made the best game of all time DOOM Eternal
Eh still prefer the first 3 RE games and Code Veronica over RE 4. . .
Nice.
More like noice!
Nice, sonny Jim.
It blows my mind that the voice actor for the Male Nords in "The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim" is in this as the main antagonist and I'm here for it.
And Ashley is Sandy Cheeks 🐿
So I came to RE4 very late, and when I first heard Saddler talk, I started laughing because I recognized him immediately.
It still makes me laugh. When I hear him talk, I keep making shitty Skyrim jokes.
@@Dimera09 And here I thought Jarl Baalgruf as Osmund Saddler was mind-blowing. But Ashley being the same voice actress as Sandy Cheeks just broke my brain.

The TMP is highly underrated. As a teen, I dismissed it because I was a fan of the harder hitting pistols. As an adult, I understood crowd control and stunning a lot better. The TMP is amazing
Especially with the upgrades!
@@Fork1 When I got RE4 for the Switch (After a nice sale), I jumped on the TMP and it literally carried me throughout the first playthrough. I actually didn't use the shotgun for MOST of this playthrough and kept going back to upgrade the TMP. Wow what an amazing retrospective and analysis.
Great job capturing what made this game special for those of us who were playing in January.2005.
"sorry i didnt mean to go down memory lane, RE4 just does that to me"
I think most people born in the late 80's and 90's feel the same. I didn't even like RE4 much as a kid, but I knew so many people who did that it's weaved through many years of my adolescence. I did end up falling in love with the game in my later teenage years when the game was ported to other consoles and I was finally able to play it.
The castle setting in RE4 is one of my favorite game environments of all time
I love this game for what it did for games, but I hate it for what it did for RE. After that we got completely stupid titles for 11 years straight. Fuck RE4 and its stupid giant mechanic mini-Napoleon statue. The castle setting was fun to play, but it made no sense at all.
@Emo Gamer R I don't. :(
Suzi owning RE4 on Xbox One, without even owning an Xbox One is absolutely hilarious and also totally expected.
So Suzi is basically queen of the nerds now, right? The guest spots from other channels, the cosplay, the exhaustive history of each game she covers and the in depth analysis of every element of them makes this channel unmatched when it comes to retrospectives like this.
@@Donlad222 re6 made sure claire a was canon, since sherry got infected was mention in 6, did not happen in claire b
"The Ubisoft port of Resident Evil 4 for PC. This version is dogshit." The fucking delivery killed me. Good job Suzi

Dude idk if its just me but I ve seen you a lot on re4 vids. You’re really passionate huh

By the way, Leon’s main handgun the silver ghost, was inspired by the USP pistol by Heckler and Koch. Ryoma Jyoshin the weapon designer has noted the inspiration was USP.
This is the perfect Christmas gift for me, thank you Suzie.
One nice touch to this game is there’s so many cutscenes that you’ll never see if you don’t explore, it’s like a reward for curiosity
