The only Steve Harley cover that actually understands the venom Steve felt while writing the song. To a lot of people its a happy song but Steve meant it as a jab at the previous Cockney Rebels who walked out on him. Awesome song mind xD
My favourite cover version ever... of anything... by anyone? Obviously we're all a bit biased here, but crikey, that just does it for me every time. Pete's last TV performance with the band?
It's funny to watch the guy with the double fret guitar (don't know his name sorry) with his left hand on the top strings and his right on the bottom ones as well.
Not a sign of a mike or guitar lead that I noticed, but (and it has been a while) it sounds different from the recorded version I'm familiar with - who knows, did they record a new "live" version that morning for the infamous 'TOTP backing track' and then cheerfully mime to that? Anyone know...
I prefer Duran Duran's version. For starters they placed renewed attention with Simon's melodic soaring vocals and Duran Duran touch of rock, disco and funk infused into the song. Even Duran Duran's cover version is better than the original. Far, far, far better.
Harsh. Yes a great track and total respect to Steve Harley and the gang but come on, nothing wrong with putting your own feelings and thoughts into a great song. Steve Albini makes the difference here and gives the tray k that something else. I love cheesecake but why not pour cream onto it for a special treat
I like some of their music, but can't really say they are in the same league of : The Chameleons, Beloved, The Smiths, Stone Roses, + Many more bands from creation label/records + Indie bands 1990s

Gedge = legend. All TWP music to be played loud, did the yanks " get" them ?
Brass neck in my top 20..... or Kennedy
Sad to hear of the death of Steve Harley. This is the best version.
It was his favourite cover of the song. RIP
And now Steve Albini who produced this cover has also died. RIP to both
One of the best covers of all time.
A version that Harley appreciates.
too good for Top of the Pops by far

Agreed
Apparently this is Steve Harleys favourite cover of this song.
A great line up that night: The Wedding Present and then the Cure!
was it pictures of you , the cure performed
No children were harmed during the making of this episode of TOTP's. Savile was not on the prowl.
What a great cover.......the Hit Parade idea was priceless....shame current "chart" toppers are so sh*t...!!!
Steve Harley himself rates this version. The drummer’s great too
That is so true....
Remember this at the time and then going to see them shortly after at the Octagon in Sheffield on 1/12/90
its not that he can't lip synch - it was done on purpose because they wanted to sing live and totp wouldnt let them
New order know how to play live on 📺,,,,,,,,🎤
& Their single goes down the charts,😭
It's funny to watch the guy with the double fret guitar (don't know his name sorry) with his left hand on the top strings and his right on the bottom ones as well.
I belive Harley had stated this was his fav cover of this song... but I was, and still am, partial to Duran Duran's version
I miss Simon. A phenomenal drummer and electrifying to watch.
gedge is brilliant
the taste just slips away
makes me think of john peel
Always piss funny when someone simply doesn't get it. Thanks for cheering me up...
That gap just catches everyone, classic
No it doesn't.
...not me... ;)
Remember this like yesterday! Saw them at Sheffield Octagon not long after this performance.
A pretty bad version. Jim Cregan must cringe every time he hears the piss poor attempt as his amazing guitar solo. 2/10 for effort
Steve harley recons this is the best version of the song.
The best cover! I'm sure he still prefers his original version, as do I!
@@adamski101 No, I've checked, this is the best version.
I love this cover.
For a classically handsome guy, Gedge was pretty camera shy
Ironic that the audience politely applauded each false ending, and then the song faded out without anyone (including the band) acknowledging the end.
Duran Duran's version is the best!
Did pete solowka play for these if so then HA hes my science teacher he gave up his music to teach science im leeds :L
All The Songs Sound The Same.
Steve Baldwin apart from they don't.
Dont type just kiss.
👍👍👍🎸
gedge is god
Amazing cover. But it needs the ba ba ba ba ba ba bas. And whoa s.
That's a good version, I like that a lot.
During the guitar solo, I'm wondering how the top strings are being fingered and the bottom strings picked could result in sound??
errm ... because they're miming and being a bit cheeky ? Just a guess though !

One of the best cover versions ever made.
Lip syncing a freaking cover song? TOTP was weird. Also, the version from 3 songs is way better.
Haha Yeah !!
Good EP
I remember this.
Tune
why is it when ever i play this i cannot play it loud enough, party on and PLAY IT LOUD...
Yes many line-up changes over the years. David Gedge writes pretty good songs but this one a Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel cover.
I prefer Duran Duran's version. For starters they placed renewed attention with Simon's melodic soaring vocals and Duran Duran touch of rock, disco and funk infused into the song. Even Duran Duran's cover version is better than the original. Far, far, far better.
lady di
The Wedding Present's is the BEST version ever of this song.
i just noticed he's just playing a c chord throughout the whole song
I love Brassn3ck and Kennedy, but this pretty poor compared to the beautiful orignal
it's an interpretation. I think it stands on its own.
Nobody crucified a brilliant song better.
SHAME ON YOU.
Steve Harley thinks this is the best cover he's heard!

In my humble opinion, this is the best version of Make Me Smile I've heard...Even better than Steve Harley and Cockney Rebels original.
these guys sound pretty bad
I like some of their music, but can't really say they are in the same league of :
The Chameleons,
Beloved, The Smiths,
Stone Roses,
+ Many more bands from creation label/records
+ Indie bands 1990s
One of the terrible perfomances on TOTP. Phoned the fucking thing in.
What didn't you like about it?
The guitar work is awesome but the singer is ironically awful...😎😱
Fuck off dingbat
