Met singer in Glasgow when they were touring , he was searching music shops for a WEM tape loop , we took him to about every music shop in Glasgow , he then invited us his show in the Barrowlands , decent guy
When I heard this for the first time I went and bought it on 7 inch vinyl the next day and played it 28 times non stop. Still love it now 30 something years later. Top 20 of all time for me.
Love this so much. Loved them back then and love them now. Gedge is the hottest guy in rock n' roll to my mind. I saw them live back in the early 90s and kept the water bottle he drank from on stage for YEARS.
I've always liked the Wedding Present. I used to live in Leeds back in the 80s/90s so I saw them live a few times, great live band. We used to rehearse at the same rehearsal space as them, nice bunch of lads, very down to earth. They definitely created their own sound, good mixture of jangly and distortion topped off with great lyrics. By far one of the best bands to come out of Leeds.
The Wedding Present created a unique sound (not easy with just guitar, drums and bass to work with) - and Gedges lyrics were clever, clear and direct. He didnt leave you guessing as to what he meant, or worse, talked a load of bollocks.
I'm sure I read in an interview somewhere that Gedge got the idea for the sound by listening to 'What Goes on' by the Velvet Underground at the wrong speed. Makes sense if that's the case
I wouldn't want to be you. They have soooo much great material. You'll never be able to get into it all. Example: their cover versions (Altered Images, for fucks sake) are phenomenal.
Saw them 3 times at Glasgow Barrowlands (89/90).... incredible, esp. the epic Take Me! I remember Gedge chatting to the crowd and going on to say how annoying it is to have a hair stuck on ur tongue as ur trying to speak (which was happening right then!)
The time I first heard this one, I was so into the Jesus&Mary Chain that I serioulsy thought nothing could equal them. Along came TWP and they blew up my mind. They still do, up to this very day. My son, who is thirteen and mostly listens to rap and R&B, says they are wicked ;)
Loved this band but one could see how they could get lost in the shadows of the greats back then like the smiths, depeche mode, the cure, joy division etc.
YUP..!!! I THOUGHT THE SAME THING..HE DOES LOOK LIKE ROBBIE WILLIAM'S ... ANYHOOS I'VE BEEN A FAN OF THE WEDDING PRESENT FOR A LONG WHILE...ALSO INTO PUNK AND SKA, REGGAE, SINCE 78----- 79 AND I'M STILL A PUNK TODAY 😁😎🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴🏴🏴💣💣💥🔥🔥💥 STAY FREE STAY SAFE WORLD ☮️❤️☯️🌈🌈🌈🇬🇭🇧🇴🇬🇭🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🇬🇭🇧🇴🇬🇭🏴🏴💣💥

Mr Soloka
I played it 29 times non stop
Love this so much. Loved them back then and love them now. Gedge is the hottest guy in rock n' roll to my mind. I saw them live back in the early 90s and kept the water bottle he drank from on stage for YEARS.
Proper tune

You lucky fuck
Original line up always the best. Top tune
its not the original line up..thats simon smith on drums not shaun charman.
Think he means the 'classic' line up.

Exactly, unlike all that Oasis shite
Dave Wakeling,Morrissey, and DAVID GEDGE. The Holy Trinity of lyricists
Brilliant
My God - that fast strum. Channelling George Formby
I had to google George Formby
I'm sure I read in an interview somewhere that Gedge got the idea for the sound by listening to 'What Goes on' by the Velvet Underground at the wrong speed. Makes sense if that's the case
I really hope so. That’s a perfect description. (Running to put the Velvets 3rd album on at 45rpm.)
Love revisiting old Wedding Present stuff
Same here. When im down it just brings me back to reality that im not the only one.
Just bloody good
Brilliant! Still love this band today!
If I heard of The Wedding Present 30 years ago, I would have started a band.
I did and I did.
Amazing
superb, simply superb
One of the best songs ever!
I am only discovering these guys.
Same here
You're in for a treat.
I wouldn't want to be you. They have soooo much great material. You'll never be able to get into it all. Example: their cover versions (Altered Images, for fucks sake) are phenomenal.
@tim feleppa and @david beckett - buy the George Best album: it's great!!!
Guitar strumming as an Olympic event.
Superb. Thanks David. I remember Reading 1990 very fondly. And Peterborough the same year.
great lyrics!
Perfect
I made a complete ass out of myself drunkenly (and repeatedly) requesting WP play this at a live show. But damn I love it so much.

TWP one of the best bands ever.
Love this!
Second greatest band of all time!
Go on... I'm intrigued
Not great to keep us dangling like this Dweemis ! Mr Dunkiep, I like you, am also intrigued !!😉
Pete Moore reference to John Peel who you will know championed many a great band. TWP were JP second greatest, The Fall being greatest. I believe.
Pop punk at it's absolute and utter finest, from the Weddo's. Timeless.
thesmithselvis indie rock. Alternative. Rock . Post punk
Bloody good init
Class
proper band great tune
Take it away...Grapper!
I always used to think he said 'CRAPPER!' aha
The time I first heard this one, I was so into the Jesus&Mary Chain that I serioulsy thought nothing could equal them. Along came TWP and they blew up my mind. They still do, up to this very day. My son, who is thirteen and mostly listens to rap and R&B, says they are wicked ;)
Anyone else think David Gedge looks like a young Robbie Williams here?
Or Robbie Williams looks like David Gedge.
I would love to see david gedge doing a cover of Rock DJ now...
Calendar used to have bands on!?
any chance of uploading the promo video for this lovely Pop song?
Indie genius
Carpal Tunnel Band
Fuckin ace!
His hand’s a blur.
Thank god they didn’t have the internet back then..
Loved this band but one could see how they could get lost in the shadows of the greats back then like the smiths, depeche mode, the cure, joy division etc.
And have the students and staff behind Soloka
Man’s a Chem teacher. Idk about the others
Does Gedge now play Grapper’s fast bits when they do this?
no, new guitarist does. Gedge just strums through the song now normally, unfortunately. No tremolo stumming from Gedge
I just have one question...
Who's Grapper?
Peter Solowka’s nickname (guitarist on the right).
that's a Westone Thunderbass!!!
Is that a Westone Thunderbass?
Lost Jackets yes m8 nice innit
Gedge was the fucking epitome of the nerd starting a rock band
Erm, Morrissey?
from the minute 2:13 his fingers seem bleed
I was learning guitar around this era and I just wanted to strum at a million miles an hour. I wonder why. Ever heard the opening to Shatner?
Jeez they strum fast.
Nobody faster..
Gedge is too good-looking. I can‘t buy the jilted lover-act from him.
ο αγνωστος αδερφος του Μητσοτακη ηταν σε indie μπαντα.
τελικα κατι καλο εχει βγαλει η οικογενεια
Blistering performance.....
For me they sound like The Smiths should have sounded...
they were often compared...
My exact thought when I first heard the song back in 1988 (The Smiths done right)
