The first bottle I had way back was the package you highlight in this vid. I have also tried the more recent edition, newer box. And get the sense there's more Yamazaki than Hakushu in the latest one... not the slightest hint of smoke that I thought I gleaned from the earlier bottle ... Am I just imagining this?

It's a blend of Suntory's distilleries, malts and grains. Wouldn't be surprised if most of the whiskies sourced outside Japan. It's $110 in Ontario. I looked Harmony over Thursday then saw a 19yo Wiser's for much less.

Sadly the Hibiki 12 is no longer available and it is so much better than the base Harmony. I asked a Suntory rep if it is ever coming back, and they said no because the demand is so high for their products, they can barely meet the demand for the base NAS. Fortunately, I have a bottle stored in my collection. The 17 Is wonderful. The high prices are result of demand. Between the Tamdhu and the Hibiki Bottles are by far the most attractive IMHO.

thanks Everwind, i'm going to have to look for a dusty Hibiki 12.

It’s a nice light sweet whisky. I think it would be a good summer whisky.

I tried this several years ago, and loved it. However, my love for this, and other Japanese whiskies have waned, as I have learned some of their practices. This doesn't go for all of them necessarily, but they can buy whiskey from any place in the world, and when it reaches Japanese soil, it magically becomes Japanese whiskey. So who knows... that Japanese whiskey you are enjoying, may be an Islay.

I actually came to appreciate the Harmony ... After having the H12 and H17, which to my palate are preferable, and really of different Caliber. But I feel the Harmony can be appreciated ... perhaps in sort of a nostalgic way considering the demise of the age-statements. I find the Harmony interesting in its own way too: I think I can taste the components of the blend which are on their own, on the production wane(?). And I have had excellent moments with Harmony.
Not sure what Hakushu's future even is.
As to Sam's comment, decided to do a little home research: The Hakushu 18 labeling does denote "Distilled" at Hakushu Distillery. I'll assume at the moment same goes for Hakushu 12. (Bottle stored away at the moment). Yamazaki's 12 box denotes "Japanese Whisky" . The Nikka 17, If I read correctly, is a vatting from whiskeys, that according to their provenance (?) whiskeys are distilled at Yoichi* and Miyagikyo* distilleries. The labeling on the excellent age statements from Hibiki denote "malts and blend From Japan".
It is my understanding that "outsourcing" whiskies and maturing elsewhere and putting a label on the product is not altogether uncommon.
    Probably yielding "mixed" results.
For instance KAIYo is a whiskey (from who knows where, perhaps) matured in Mizunara Oak, and therefore, as I gather, not labeled as "Japanese Whiskey" but KAIYo Whisky from Japanese Mizunara Oak barrels, aged at sea, produced by a trading company located in Hong Kong.
Would love to hear, gather, more info like this. Not to mention garner more information on what the future holds for Japanese Whiskey.
    * P.S. To my palate the these two Nikka distilleries produce whiskeys that have a definite reference to Scotch whiskeys.
But of definitively Japanese character ... I have yet to find a Scotch that emulates what the the Suntory and Nikka distilleries produce.

Whiskey Quests personally I don’t think it is... it’s quite light. Good flavors but it won’t wow you... I need to be wow’d in one way or another if I’m spending $60+. Just so many good bottles out there under $50... or plenty of other options at $60+ that will wow you.

It is considering availability. I’ve compared it with Crest 12 & Hibiki 21, the Harmony falls in between nicely; however, for obvious reasons, the Hibiki 21 wins out.

Scotch Test Dummies I find it a little bit on the nose, and then late on the palate into the finish... reminded me of French Oak at first. Definitely different. This was one of the few whiskies that I agree with almost all of the flavour notes on the back of the box. I’ll send you a link to my review on Instagram. (btw, it’s $110 here at LCBO, so you are very lucky to find it at that price!)

I am starting to see why bart likes "Peat Monsters" so much, he doesn't seem to have a naturally strong sense of smell. Not a knock, we all have different levels of smell, but damn. This whisky is definitely fruity and floral, and yes there is peated whisky in this. $80-90 in 2019.

      @b.whisky9438 5 років тому

@@TheReal_DeanD ...one bit of advice. Safeway often gives a discount of some spirits. If you buy 6 you'll get the discounted price. If there is only 2 hibikis left, ask their manager if you can get the discounted price since they only have 2 left, they will more than likely give it to you. They did that for me. If they give you 10% off instead, take that because it is a better deal. Good luck!!
