    This is by far the best presentation/DIY video on the internet/UA-cam and I'll tell you why! I would never have thought NOT to disconnect the entire dimmer all at once....I'ts like replacing spark plugs in a car...taking one wire off at a time just made this safer and easier. Thank you so very much!

    It would have been helpful to note that this is not the only configuration for wiring. A friend of mine was installing this switch in a room addition (so no existing switch) and watched this video and concluded that the white wire needed to be on the switch, despite in his configuration the white wire is actually a neutral and not part of a switch loop. He burned up his dimmer as a result.

    I purchased a skylark contour dimmer to replace a single pole connector. When I removed the original switch, it doesn’t have a ground wire. It this safe? The two wires coming out of the wall are black. The red wire from the dimmer should be connected to which wire when both are black? Thanks.

    • @Lutron-Electronics
      @Lutron-Electronics  6 років тому +1

      Hi, José. Thanks for reaching out. Yes it is safe. Per code, when no grounding wire exists, you may cap off the green but recommended to use a double face plate. That way the screws are not exposed and prevents any accidental shocks. There is no polarity between the red and black wire on the dimmer, simply attach one black wire to the dimmer’s black wire and then the remaining black wire to the dimmer’s red wire. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

      The dimmer part is the little white slide bar/nub part on the right side of the regular rocker switch- its built in and slides up and down vertically to dim/brighten. Hope that clarifies it/helps.

    Video is clear and simple, except my switch box has no ground wire to tie to, will mounting the switch to the box and wire nut off the switches ground wire work

    • @Lutron-Electronics
      @Lutron-Electronics  5 років тому +1

      Hi, Michael. Yes it will function without the ground wire but to meet code requirements you will have to do one of the two options below:
      When no “grounding means” exists within the wallbox
      for an existing switch or dimmer, the National Electrical
      Code® (NEC®) allows a switch/dimmer to be installed as a
      replacement as long as: 1) a nonmetallic, noncombustible
      faceplate is used with nonmetallic attachment screws or
      2) the circuit is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter.
      Lutron wallplates meet this requirement. When installing a
      control according to these methods, cap or remove green
      wire before screwing control into wallbox.

    I have a Leviton 612-6623-pw Decora 3-Way dimmer switch for incandescent lighting. It has 4 wires coming out the back. 2-Black, 1-Red and 1-Green. Neither of the black wires have a stripe. I know the green wire is the ground. I have 2 wires in the wall. 1-white and 1-black. Which wire on the switch do I cap off so I can use the switch as a single pole? and which wire is the hot and neutral coming out of the switch? Thanks

    • @Lutron-Electronics
      @Lutron-Electronics  6 років тому

      Hello, Vincent. Since your question is about a Leviton product, we cannot be sure about its installation. Typically for devices like that, the red wire will be your traveler that you don’t need in a single pole application. However, we would recommend contacting that manufacturer for proper installation information.

    in a bathroom with a switch for the fan and then another switch next to it for the light I have two black wires and one ground for the light switch. does it matter which one of the black wires goes to the red and the black on the switch ? ( not using the red with with white stripe on new switch for light).

    • @Lutron-Electronics
      @Lutron-Electronics  5 років тому

      Hi, Tobias.
      If both black wires are directly connected to the light switch (plus ground), the order of those two wires does not matter on the Diva dimmer in this video. In fact, the order of the wires does not matter for most of our CL dimmers. However, if you are using our neutral/ELV dimmers, the order does matter, so this is not a universal rule.
      If you have further questions, we ask that you call us directly while you are able to work with the wiring so that we can very clearly outline your entire setup. We don’t want to make a mistake and cause any electrical issues. Our agents are available at 844-LUTRON1 24/7. If you are not able to call, please take a photo and include an in-depth explanation in an email to support@lutron.com.

    I have the Lutron Skylark s603 and the wires are coloured differently from above. I tried reading the manual to see what the names of the wires are, but the manual only refers to them as red or black, not what type of wire they are. It has 2 solid red wires and one black. Is there a way for me to know which is which?

    • @Lutron-Electronics
      @Lutron-Electronics  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, Lauren. Some of our older Skylark models did not have the white stripe on one of the red wires to indicate which to cap off in a single-pole application. In your situation, you still use the black wire as shown in this video. Simply choose one of the red wires and connect as shown, then cap the remaining red wire. When these red wires are reversed, the only change to the device will be which direction turns the switch off. So if you wire the device and it switches opposite from what you expect, then simply swap the red wire connections to change the direction of that toggle.
      I apologize for this. This is why we changed the product to have a little white stripe on one red wire.
      Let us know if we can be of further assistance!

    So I have a three way dimmer but I only need to install a one way, I'm a little confused as to which wire I should be using for the red travelers. The Netural or the Single-Pole?

    • @Lutron-Electronics
      @Lutron-Electronics  6 років тому +1

      Hi, Alex. With a single-pole installation, you should have two voltage wires connected to your existing switch, plus you may or may not have a ground wire connected. With the dimmer in this video, you would wire this in a single-pole setup by connecting those two voltage wires to the solid black and solid red wires from our dimmer. The red/white wire would not be needed, and can be capped off with the included blue wire cap. The green wire connects to the bare copper ground if present.
      This dimmer does not (and should not) connect to neutral.
      If you have any questions about the wiring setup for this device, feel free to call our 24/7 technical support at 844-LUTRON1.
      Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

      For a single pole application with two black wires coming from the wall, one black wire will be the constant hot and the other is the switch leg. The constant hot can be found by using a multi-meter or voltage tester. Lutron recommend connecting the hot wire from the wall to the black lead on the dimmer. Then, the other black wire from the wall will be connected to the solid red lead on the dimmer. The red with white stripe will be capped and remain unused.

      I think this is one of those applications where the hot is already at the fixture, and the wire to the switch is carrying hot in both the black and the white (white is hot when switch is in 'on' position.) IMO, I would be putting black tape on the neutral (white) since it's carrying current. If you're running new wiring, I'd have hot going into the black, coming out of the red when switched on. I wouldn't have a hot just sitting at the fixture already. But I'm no expert.

    • @DB-xp9px
      @DB-xp9px Рік тому

      @@stephenlewis2080 after thinking about it more, i think they shot their 2 use-case videos back to back and forgot on the 2nd one they needed to introduce power to the circuit. their diagram on the packaging is equally unhelpful but thankfully they had 1 pic on their website that actually showed where the load and power supply come into/out of the switch. after reviewing that, i see it's pretty much like every other on/off switch out there.

      Hi, Andres. If you have an extra wire over what is shown in the video, you may have a slightly different setup. In this video, the wall location is a single pole, meaning only one switch controls the light. You may have a setup where multiple switches control the light, such as a 3-way or a 4-way. If you have no idea what function a wire serves, we recommend contacting an electrician to be sure. If the wire is still connected to a previous device, we can also give you some troubleshooting guidelines through Technical Support at 844-LUTRON1.

    It should be mentioned that you don't use the red wire with the white stripe if the switch at the other end is a 3-way switch. If it is not a 3-way, you need to use it. The switch at the other end does not need to be a 3-way but you need to use all the wires.

      Hello Richard,
      Thanks for reaching out! If you are using a 3-Way Dimmer in a single pole application, the striped wire would be capped with a wire nut and the two wires coming out of the wall would attach to our dimmer. If you are using the 3-Way Dimmer in a 3 way application, all three wires would be used. The load wire that goes out to the light will then connect to the solid red wire.
