Sure seems like there'd have to be play in the mechanism to prevent both sides of the roller from being engaged simultaneously. Wouldn't it be better to have a split roller so that both sides could be engaged without binding and 0 play?
Rollers aren't engaged simultaneously, in the middle rollers have no contact. Worm gear contacts rollers on the left side from left to the middle and on the right side from the middle to the right side.
considering the application, no backlash is probably the key factor. It's a rigid connection between the 'worm' and the 'wheel' as long as there's no play in the bearings on the 'wheel' side
@@gorak9000 I used to work a Pfauter 3.5 metre table, gear cutting machine 25 years ago which was equiped with a backlash eliminating system consisting of two worms of opposite hands. I am sure this would be cheaper to manufacture but I can't see how backlash is eliminated.?
@@nigelmitchell351 Isn't it eliminated because instead of the wheel having fixed teeth, it has roller bearings? As long as the bearings have no axial runout, and the gap between the bearings is a precision fit with the tooth on the worm, there's no slop in the worm to wheel connection. I'm not a mechanical engineer, so that might be totally out to lunch. My understanding is that a regular worm to wheel gear mesh would require a little bit of slop so the mechanism doesn't bind, but that would introduce backlash. I know the typical way to do this is with a harmonic drive, which is another way to eliminate backlash, but in a completely different fashion
@@gorak9000 Hi Gorka, all of the component parts in the bearings and mesh with the worm all must have their running clearances and allowances for thermal expansion. By slop, 😂 I assume you mean backlash, no offence. If you're not a mechanical engineer, you have a good understanding of the fundamentals.
@@nigelmitchell351 haha - electrical/ computer engineer / aspiring hobbyist machinist (as in I bought a busted cnc VMC, shoe horned it into my garage, and fixed all the electrical and electronics problems it had, but now need to finish fixing some mechanical issues before it's ready to make chips - that part of the project is kindof going slower than I had hoped, mostly because of my own procrastination in ordering some parts (replacement oil lubrication parts for the auto lube system mostly) ). I neglected to think about thermal expansion! Good point!
Direct drive motor table is also no backlash, but It's not good at start of cutting and change of cutting force. Roller drive table doesn't have these problem.
What a fascinating drive mechanism, one which I have never seen or heard of before!
A very cleverly designed and manufactured system.

If you look closely you can see it start to spin the opposite direction to what it entered about midway
Nice mechanism, great idea.
This is a roller gear cam. They have been around for quite a long time.
Price of this rotary table and location Please
Cool and very nice piece of WORK!
But what machine tool do you use to machine this kind of gear ?
What advantage does this offer over a conventional worm and wheel.? I can see possibly lower friction losses.

Тот случай, когда усложнение конструкции, ведёт к её улучшению. Да и в изготовлении проще будет.
Вот оно чё, Михалыч.
And nice background music 👍 Too.
very nice mechanism
Is barari Ke liye main 5 sal pahle socha tha banane ke liye
Good videos tutorial next time boss ferfec the best videos you 👍👍👍
My GoPro's camera mount be like
Mechanisms like this are known more than one century. See /G. Bethman. Lifting machines/.
Very good
i see lots of backlash ,how did they make this genius possible
Very Very nice 👌
