My tiller has the same engine, it was sitting for many years, intake valve was seized as well, luckily it did come loose, but I do wonder if it's a design flaw.

I don't think it is really a design flaw, perhaps they just designed them with indoor storage in mind, like a garden shed. I cover the motor on mine with a blue box, and a cat food bag inside that duct taped around the engine. I also have an empty tuna can covering the gas cap, so no water can get into the gas tank.

Could be they ran it without an air filter, sucked up dirt and scored up the cylinder walls which ended up eating itself in the process, hence the bottom end still being good compared to the piston, rings & cylinder...

Yes, I guess that is possible. I have ran into some real head scratchers lately, like a 3.5 horse lawnmower with a broken con rod. The crank and rod hearings were mint, but the con rod was blown right in half. My son wondered about it overrevving with a governor problem. I guess that is possible, though I tied the throttle open on an engine and it ran 45 minutes at max rpms, it just wouldn't blow the rod until I un-torqued the con rod bolts, the it lasted 10 seconds and Wham! My son (being a machinist) noticed that the con rod wasn't honed, it was just circle milled, so Briggs has been cutting corners for 10 plus years, since they introduced the Chinesium engines. I guess the old way of building them was lasting too long, so make them worse, so people have to buy a mower more often. I think it back fired though, since there are so many other offshore mowers now.

Sure, email me at enforcer12345@hotmail.com (it is just some random email I picked years ago) A 3 horse riding mower, WOW, that sounds like quite the weapon! We had a 4 horse rider back in the early 70s, and I currently have a tiny 5 horse Briggs rider. Back in those days you were king of the lawn with an 8 horse rider!!! :)
