  • The price of pedigree dogs is at an all-time high, and demand too. 2017 saw a 7% rise in the number of registered puppies in the UK.
    We visited Crufts, one of the world's largest dog shows, to find out why people spend so much on pedigree dogs.
    A Tibetan Mastiff sold to a businessman for $1.9m in 2014, yet years later the breed was being abandoned en masse. So why does this happen? We speak to the RSPCA to find out more about irresponsible breeding leading to an increase in price.

      Not all dogs dig and bark a lot though. Small dogs tend to bark more than larger dogs because a lot of larger dogs were bred for hunting & obviously barking wouldn't be beneficial when you're hunting. A lot of the larger breeds were made to be working dogs so they have some of the more desirable traits.

      The saddest thing is there inbred thay call it line breeding that's why thay have some money health conditions. Line breeding is strongly encouraged to coltvate serton trait. Bc the pedigree dog market is so competitive and naturally there will be some variation in the breed but they want to do everything that can to inshore the bogs thay produce will be as similar to one another as possible. They breed dogs to there uncle or cousin so that the dog's name doesn't appear twice on there linage, to hid that there very closely related. And then they trash small breeder claiming they are the ones endangering dogs welfare.

      Pitbulls are not inherently aggressive. If you think that, then i’m sorry but you’re very uneducated on this subject. I have met countless pit mixes and have never once had a bad experience. Brachycephalic dogs don’t require as much walking/grooming etc, but often need surgery because of the flat faces (I think they restrict breathing, or something)
      A shelter dog is the way to go, because there are so many different combinations, and they are much cheaper, often healthier, and are just as capable as pedigree dogs, unless, of course, you need a specific breed or are looking to enter the dog in shows.
      There are breed rescues, but I’m not sure if you could enter those dogs in shows.

      @idvemmawoods 3 роки тому +9

      Alright, I show dogs and was around these sorts of people all the time before covid. We're trying to keep breeds alive and healthy, nowadays you see a lot of mutts or backyard breeders who CONTRIBUTE to the issues with strays and animal shelters. Backyard breeding is insanely unethical, this is not. You also see "labradoodles" and the type, bred by backyard breeders who wsnt profit and don't care about the dogs health. These dogs may have some common health issues with their breeds (pugs for example) but are bred to be the best and healthiest.
      If you're so concerned about suffering dogs, look at backyard breeders, not people who have usually years of experience or have been taught by others with 10+ years of it.

If the dog is abused by the owner or treated badly then it will affect the temperament of the dog. The dog will eventually become more aggressive and... you don’t see that in pedigree dogs do you?

      @@dippertheservicepupintrain1537It REALLY is, i worked in dog sled racing at the winning level. its competitive racing and the dogs are treated as wearable parts in a machine. mushing is okay but racing is racing. in the show Losers on netflix, the episode about aly zirkle one guy described like "the dogs are not their teammates, they are used as fuel to be burned pursuit of victory." thats not even an anti mushing piece of media lol thats hardcore af. totally lines up with my experience though.
      and no its not hundreds of thousands of years either like 10 or 20 thousand that people even have lived in the arctic. And its not like those dogs were running that freaking far or fast. the oldest reoccurring dog sled race started in 1917 its not some ancient thing.
      Any dog can pull a sled, look up dogs pulling carts and crap its not rocket science.
      you are projecting human emotions onto dogs. every dog has its own unique personality most of this crap is just operant conditioning. when you train sled dogs, some are faster when you leave, others are faster once you start heading back home. are they excited to train? or eager to get it over with? does it even matter? Racing is combing through a ton of dogs and finding the best. but its the best for racing and the bar is arbitrarily high. sled dogs don't work anymore but in racing they are running faster and farther than ever its harder to be one of those dogs than ever. so many dogs don't make the cut thats why so many of these mushers have hundreds of dogs that all live on chains. you see 12 dogs on a team but it takes 60 or more to make that team and sustain it. even guys that own small numbers of dogs where did those dogs.
      But yea. racing sucks. look at greyhound racing and all the forms of horse racing. all form of animal racing work the same way.
      also your logic sucks here to "the dogs very much enjoy it and its what they were bred to do" you could say the same thing about dog fighting. its not like you have to force them to fight. the training is the same too you train fighting dogs by getting them to run and feeding them a healthy diet its just like sled dog racing. even outwardly looks the same with all the chaining and crap. training fighing dogs seems like fun i see the appeal after working in dog sled racing, no joke. i think a cool way to get people to wake up to how bad dog sled racing is would be to get micheal vick to comment on tours of sled dog racing yards. i can't afford to speak to him though its like 20k an hour i looked into it lol

      @tchit8792 5 років тому +18

      FP well if you’re going to go with personal attacks then I’ll point out that the vast majority of dogs in shelters and rescues are as healthy as any dog you could get elsewhere. Just because the dog is at a shelter doesn’t mean they are “ill” and aren’t worth giving a chance. Worse comes to worse, take the dog with chronic and expensive vet treatments back to the shelter. All dogs from credible shelters (not self-proclaimed ones that are a cover up business) are spayed / neutered and vetted for any illness, etc. before being allowed to be adopted out. At any rate, if a family is looking for a puppy there are almost always litters available, and trust me those go like crazy. Yes, I know there can be major problems with shelter dogs, but there are also millions of dogs euthanized each year for non-medical reasons and other dogs that are perfectly fine but aren’t adopted because they aren’t “the one” or “probably problematic.” If you are able to find a credible breeder, you would find yourself in a very small group of people fortunate enough to check out the place where dogs are breezes (basically a well taken care of house) and a breeder that probably breeds show dogs. There are 2.4 million dogs bred in commercial breeding facilities and sold on sites that look legit. These dogs get sold.... and any of them could have any number of health problems. It’s not worth the life of a dog for someone to tell a potential adopter that dogs in shelters are “dangerous and problematic”

All of the cats there are outdoor cats so people leave out food for their cats or their neighbors cats. Also none of the animals there are spayed and neutered so the amount of strays keeps growing. I got my dog for free from a kill shelter. We walked in with no explanation and when I saw her I almost cried. She was supposed to be put down in 1 week (we choose kill shelters to help an animal in danger of dying), and she had fleas. They said that she was not a very good dog and to pick another (wtf?) but we got her anyways. Had her for 5 years now and she is my everything. Please don’t shop for pets. There are so many animals that need you’re help.
    I also can’t believe that people will have a dog for 3+ years then sell them for 7,000 dollars. You raised and imprinted on this dog then just sold it and broke it’s heart.

    One of my friends has a Samoyed that they got from the breeder on the condition that they get the dog for free, but have to buy special food, get certain care done, and the breeder can take him back for breeding or shows at any point in time. He's a beautiful and very fun friendly dog, but I can't imagine paying thousands for one. I'm good with my mixed breed cat I got for around $100. I think he's part Maine Coon, as he's the size of some dogs, but there are also cats that cost thousands, and I don't understand. Unless you have an allergy or lots of kids around and need specific traits, I'm not sure what the draw is to purebred, when mutts can be just as cute and friendly.

    • @doggodoggo3000

      the dogs that the samoyed came from were not selectively bred. the samoyed is the result of a white dude going to an indigenous community and combing through their dogs and selecting a handful of white ones and taking them back home with him. its a genetic bottleneck followed by inbreeding and line breeding. its just an early example of a designer dog and no where near as healthy or capable as the dogs they were split from.

    ok so:
    1) breeders DONT make bank. They either go under or break even
    2) well bred brachy dogs are fine. its the BYB dogs that have issues with their health
    3) these prices arent common for any of these dogs. they just took a price that someone has paid before and make it seem thats what everyone pays for, lol. a well bred pure bred dog can cost you from $1.2k - 8k, depending on the breed.

And I still grief about it because I didn't wanna go see her on the day before she died, I told myself "I'll go tomorrow". Little did I know tomorrow she would not be alive.

For example, if I wanted more of a small, cuddly lap dog with lower exercise requirements and I hated drooling but all of the shelter dogs happen to be energetic large dogs who drooled and have high exercise requirements, then it wouldn’t make sense for me adopt them as they wouldn’t be a good fit for me.

    This doesn't seem to address the money, time, and energy needed for an ethical breeder to ensure both parents are screened for health issues via DNA testing, imaging, and routine vet examinations as well the the requisite titling and competing in breed appropriate venues to proof their dogs deserve to even have progeny. Or that responsible breeding is emotionally exhaustive. It's not about pumping out puppies. It's about preserving the integrity of a breed and ensuring each of your dogs will placed in a home that wants them and has the capacity to take care of them for the duration of their lives. Breeding properly costs money, time, and tears. That's why a responsibly bred dog can be "expensive".
    And why high-profile puppy mills can take advantage of that to charge thousands if the applicant doesn't know what to look for (OFA scores, holter testing, knowing how to read a pedigree, conformation and performance titles).

    • @zokazokarai8758

      Still doesn’t equal 1mil per puppy.

    • @bevvyina8457
      @bevvyina8457 Рік тому

      And also how rescue organizations will "rescue" puppies from puppy mills at auction, thereby just incentivising the puppy mill owners. Also if a breed has a few select health problems, it's genealg easier to deal with as responsible breeders work on breeding it out, and you can be on the watch and get early warning as well as preventatives. Rescues broke my heart and thr amount of trauma simply from living in a kennel is staggering.
