I usually enjoy your channel but this one you can go screw yourself. I have an indoor outdoor cat He cannot survive inside for long periods of time He needs to go outside. Yes he hunts birds sorry about that but he's a cat. keeping a cat sheltered inside is the worst thing you can do for them. They need to go outside They need to be adventurous they need to explore because if you keep them inside I guarantee you your cat will not live long and you're depriving your animal of it's goddamn birthright. Tell you what You live inside for 5 years with plenty of food and plenty of water alone You're only allowed to leave for medical reasons and you have a big window to look outside and see what's going on on your street. If you keep your cat sheltered inside at all times I consider that animal abuse!

@@highlander723 I agree. this is a hateful and unhelpful video that is not in anyway nuanced, and will only have the effect of stirring up hatred against people's pets, whom most consider family. It's already obvious in the comments. The fact that an intelligent and independent minded animal living in a flat/house out of the fresh air and sun and variety of natural environment only. is not enough for their quality of life, even with enrichment, is completely ignored. Probably by the same people that would consider cramped zoos that don't allow natural behaviours. to be cruel. Not a good take.

      @@finflwr I don't think it's hateful on cats. It's informative and pedagogic.
I prefer cats over dogs. I've had 8/9 cats when I was a kid, we'd never have more than 2. They were family and we took good care of them. I live in a rural area and didn't know better, they had plenty of outdoor access. None of them lived past 6 years. They were run over by cars, killed by feral animals, etc. If it was now, they would only go outside with me, on a leash. Or not at all. Because I know I could provide them an indoors happy life.

That is sad. People have just learnt that according to studies, foxes don't kill cats (foxes instinctively fear an eye infection from claws, but collect cat carcasses from roads, which is origin to the myth) so people think it is safe to leave cat outside. But coywolves, despite the name, all actually have at least 20% dog DNA, which makes them less likely to be intimidated by risk of cat claw in the eye.
And then there are bad people who kill cats even when they know it belongs to someone. Don't let your cat outside unless in cat patio or harness. People are horrible.

There used to be a TON of stray/outdoor cats in our neighborhood. My dad's a veterinarian, so he was immediately displeased with this and set out a bunch of traps to catch them. Most were caught, neutered, and sent to a shelter to find a home, and our neighbors who were the owners of the outdoor cats got a stern talking to, lol.
There's still a few strays hanging around, but it's nowhere near the amount it was those several years ago, thank goodness. And I've definitely noticed a rise in the local bird population!
Our cat, Kitty, was one of those strays- she got stuck under our back porch and kept coming back after we freed and fed her the first time. She's a very happy indoor cat now, and clearly prefers it- we could leave the front door wide open and she'd just sit at the threshold and meow, waiting for us to come back inside 😂❤

They came and trapped him, took him to a vet and phoned us asking if he could be returned to the farm as they had no space for him. My family already had some cats and one didn't like others but I lived in a static caravan (trailer) so I said I'd have him. He became one of the farm cats keeping the rodents down, but alas came the day to leave the farm and now I'm living in a more urban setting he's an indoor cat that loves to go out on his harness and lead. People seem to have a weird notion that their cat couldn't possibly do this, that they're the cutest little angel who wouldn't ever, and or a few birds isn't a big deal. 1. They can, will, and do if they are let out. 2. It isn't just a few. And even if it was, there are millions of indoor/outdoor, stray, and feral cats out there. This adds up very quickly. 3. We literally have evidence that cats are to blame for declining bird populations. This isn't a good thing either as we and our ecosystems depend on the presence of birds for seed dispersal, and to feed their native predators.
I am begging people to get their heads out of their asses on this issue. Your cat's need for stimulation can be fulfilled indoors, and to state otherwise is admission that you do not want to put in the work beyond opening and closing a door. Why are willing to risk your cat's life rather than do more? Do you not enjoy being the source of your cat's joy? Do you not enjoy playing with them? Likewise, I would suggest that learning how to train your cat and how this diverges from the course of training dogs. Most cats are trainable, and training is way more mentally stimulating than throwing balls and clicking on a laser; this is because bodily exercise primarily tires the body. The mind can be tired from enough exercise, but making them think does more for their mental stimulation.

From what you described, first step is to subtly push your friends to spay&neuter their cats. They'll automatically stop roaming as much and will stop spraying. Also, I've found a good way is to suggest slow transition to indoor only and minimizing danger to wildlife to be something that is more likely to get them there, than just telling them to keep cat indoors.
Like, get a breakaway collar with a bell so that wildlife will be alerted to cats approaching; having a good play session and feeding wet food before cats are allowed outdoors; having toys and enrichment on property as hunt=play for well-fed cats; limit outdoor access during dusk and dawn in spring and summer as birds are most active at those times; no bird/wildlife feeders or bird baths on property; leash training or a catio for supervised outdoor time.
I always hope something sticks, and I've found no other way to convince people to transition to indoor only if the argument for their cat's own safety doesn't work.

It wasn’t “just barely”, it was withdrawn by the councillor that put it forward. It was not supported by the veterinary staff at Toronto Animal Services, the Toronto Feral Cat Coalition or any of its members. Toronto Animal Services wants you to keep your cats indoors, but if a no-roaming bylaw is passed the shelters will be flooded with people dropping off “nuisance” cats, and they don’t have the capacity or staff for that. As it is, I can’t get placement at a shelter for highly adoptable homeless cats.
Also, TAS does a lot of work with the homeless population and they promote TNR and are active in providing care for the feral cat population. Passing a no-roaming bylaw would put our feral cat population at risk. It isn’t feral cats’ fault they are out there and they should not suffer for it, humans made this problem.

It’s a shame how people can’t understand that there’s a huge issue when it comes to releasing pets in the wild. There are situations that can’t be helped of course, but for the ones not afflicted with such issues, the bulk of the problem is careless irresponsibility.
Feral cats are rampant in Hawaii and Australia, to the point where they need to cull them to protect what’s left of their criticality endangered species. Feral cats obliterate a huge number of native species every year. Yet, we have people that say culling cats (ESPECIALLY CATS) is an act of animal ab🐱e, and they even seek out horrid ways to “stop” others from doing so.
Then again, these are the type of people who think spaying and neutering “solves” the issue of preventing native wildlife from becoming extinct. Nah toots, that ain’t how that works. They hunt, they have teeth and claws. Cats hunt, just to hunt. Removing their kitten making equipment doesn’t stop them from hunting. It’s the pretty and cute privilege of cats that plagues many people’s minds due to their popularity.
If you’re gonna own a cat, especially in areas where there’s a big threat of stripping what’s left of critically endangered animals, keep them indoors. Build a catio. I could say this about many other animals. Cats are the focal point despite people thinking preservation of species is a sin, and culling cats is evil. Yet, the cat problem gets worse and worse. How many animals will it take to be lost before people realize it’s an issue? I may be throwing my pearls before swines, we’re the biggest issue when it come to ruining earth and animals on it. Yet, small steps to reverse stupidity, DOES work.
I’m excited for all the backlash I may get from people who’s I.Q. is on Mike, Lu and Og.

He came with all his shots and having been neutered, and they asked that I sign a contract saying I would not let him outside unsupervised. I live on the 11th floor of an apartment building, so that will not be a problem. Honestly, cats are much healthier and happier inside, and live so much longer. Letting cats free roam just exposes them to parasites, disease and injury, predators like coywolves, and danger from cars and other human-made hazards, not to mention the harm they do to other animals just by being cats. It's not the cats' fault. As pet owners we have a *responsibility* to our animal companions to not let them suffer unnecessary harm, and letting them free roam is doing just that. In Finland, it has been forbidden to keep cats free for a long time now, but it has been felt that it is not enough. And nowadays people have begun to demand strictures, such as requiring a fee-based permit to keep a cat as a pet, cats must be registered, owners must pay a registration fee, cats must be taxed, cats must be taken to the vet, at least four times a year, the cat must be healthy (and if it gets hurt or sick it can be taken away), all cats must be sterilized shortly after their birth, cat breeding should be subject to a permit, permission to breed kittens should be paid for, only an official professional breeder could get a permit, a breeder can only get a permit to breed kittens with sterilized cats (although no one can explain how it would work), the cat's origin and Lineage must be known, the cat must have official papers, the cat's owner must have at least x amount of annual income, and in addition to these, a free, stray or escaped cat can be caught and put to sleep. The previous government has already started some actions in response to these demands of the citizens, but things are progressing slowly. Probably only some of these requirements will be fulfilled and not in the way that people hope, but still in such a way that it restrains and limits the unrestrictedness of cats.

He can still have supervised outdoor access. It's not necessarily a all-or-nothing situation as it is often made out to be. You could try leash training, if possible build a catio, or even get a pop up play-pen catio type of thing.
There are also other measures you can take to keep the risk to the local wildlife as minimal as possible, e.g. breakaway collar with a bell so wildlife is alerted to him approaching; no bird feeders or bird baths anywhere on your property; no feeder for other wildlife; limiting outdoor access during dusk and dawn in spring and summer as this is when birds are most active; a good play session and wet food before he goes outside; toys and enrichment on your property as hunt=play for well-fed cats; .. . There are actually quite a few ways to mitigate harm as much as possible, and slowly work towards an indoor lifestyle. Maybe the ideal will end up limiting his outdoor access to 30min daily with you supervising the whole time. That's okay too.

I have chickens in an HOA that allows it, but I'm surrounded by cat owners who let their cats outside.
My chickens are trained to call for me when they see a cat. I come running out to the rescue with a rake in my hand, and I hiss and chase them away.
Yes, I'm nuts - no, I won't hurt them - and no, I don't feel bad, because your freaking pet shouldn't be in my yard to begin with. They're lucky I have the decency not to trap them and take them to the shelter (that would be cruel in my opinion... probably just as cruel as letting your cats harass my chickens, but I am not that petty, so they get rakes, hisses, and chases)

    I have two questions:
    1. What advice could outdoor cats owners get if they want to turn their cats into indoor cats?
Outdoor cats are VERY active and love nature, so I assume they would have a hard time adapting to be in some square meters.
    2. How much indoor space is good enough for a cat to be healthy and happy? some people keep theirs in a room or inside their small apartments. Might that be enough?
    Thanks. Nice educational video.

At first i was thinking maybe putting a little bell on the cat could protect the birds, but yeah, these babies didn't stand a chance either way. Might be better than nothing, but indeed seems better to just keep them outside.
I had a cat years ago, but when i had to move, it was re-homed at my mother's place, in a outdoor and natural setting, i have no idea how many victims it made over the years he lived here, we was a very "playful" and agile cat, thinking about it now, its impact must have been very significant. 😥
And yeah, its life was also cut short by what seemed like a bad encounter.

    • @violetlight1548

The bell does nothing. My old cat could walk around without his ringing at all, and he was strictly an indoor cat, who only occasionally hunted house spiders.

When we decided our next cats would be indoor cats we made a nice big cage-thing in our garden, that is connected to our house via a tunnel, so they can go outside a bit, but not really capture anything. We got a lot of toys for them and we tried to walk with them on a leash but they didn't like that. But with that little space in our garden where the cats can go, I think its actually a really great solution and our cats have enough space and things to discover, while the birds can fly around savely. So defenetly keep your cats indoors especially if you have the possibillity to build an outside space for them in your garden!

Depends upon the location. If my neighborhood (on the edge of open desert), ferals & outdoor pets are kept in check somewhat by hawks, owls, coyotes, but when you have humans feeding outdoor colonies, all the numbers get out of whack. There's just no way for the predators to catch up to the breeding numbers. And, in a city with few/no predators, the breeding numbers are insane.

I love cats so much and it always makes my day when I meet a random cat outside but yeah, they are definitely an invasive species in most environments. They can be devastating to local ecosystems and/or become a food source to other, larger carnivores (like coyotes). The safety of local wildlife and cats is far more important than my joy, please keep your kitties inside!! T_T

I love my cats, but I will always be anti-freeroaming for exactly every reason explained in this video. Both of my boys are have a harness and a leash, they enjoy the front lawn and porch in a safe fashion for both animals and my cats.
I ONLY have a second because of a feral cat issue in my neighborhood, a long with some houses letting their cats be outdoor cats. Despite the fact that we have bylaws banning it. My boy Cuda was found with his liter mates at 4 weeks old living an junker car at a garage across the street. I took him in, raised him, and have had him for four years now. His siblings went to the local humane society. Unfortunately the mother was not caught and I am assuming is still out roaming.

I think the only cats that can be kept outside at all are completely feral cats or in some rare cases barn cats, besides that they should really be kept indoors, people can set up catios, take them outside supervised, or even on walks so their felines can still enjoy being outside without devastating bird populations. Fun fact though keeping a cat inside your house still deters stuff like mice and rats from entering your home! We have two senior cats we started keeping inside and we've never had mice or rat problems, the only time we had a mice in the house was when they were half-outdoor and one of them brought in a live mouse, but since moving towns we started keeping them indoor
