I was a logger in SC for a few years. Cottonwood and Sycamore were the only species the mills did not want logs cut from. We put any that would fit into our chipper for making paper (20” and under). The rest we cut to lengths for RR ties. I never understand why cuz the sycamore seemed like such a pretty wood.

I really like your saw. A local mill has an old lt40 super (electric). It has been extensively modified over the years. The sawyer can really put out the volume of wood. He saws almost exclusively black walnut. I have a simply manually operated home built machine. It works fine for my application and I also didn't have to spend the big bucks to buy it. I use it for building maintenance purposes. I have a hardwood framed building. I want to keep all of the wood hardwood if possible. I enjoy watching your milling videos. I always learn something new watching them.

I used to make Cigar Humidors from quarter sawn “snakeskin” sycamore. You can’t cheat the process of quartering lumber. Unfortunately because you’re running a horizontal mill you have to cut from the bottom. However a vertical turndown mill cuts on the side and for the most part away from dogs etc. The safest way on a bandsaw is to have a 2X board always on the deck and pevee the log after each cut. Great video ❤

Hi Em. How are ya? Sycamore is a pretty wood.
The way I quarter saw is a lil different. I level the pith then cut slightly above it pull off the top half, cut through the pith the thickness I want. Each side of the pith is quarter sawn. Now I have 2 almost halves. I put them together and cut through the middle now have 4 quarters. Now I put a 2inch board down start cutting off the bottom of the quarters. The quarter sawn boards slowly shrink in width but are quarter sawn. The last couple are rift sawn still look good when seen from the side. Thanks as always for sharing. God bless you and the family.

The whole purpose of milling quarter sawn lumber is to highlight the medullary rays in woods like sycamore and white oak. If I had been cutting those logs, I would have taken a slab on either side of the pith first and then cut the other parts into quarter sections. One thing about sycamore is that it has an extremely high water content, which is why it is so heavy when green, and very light when dry. I would consider it too soft for flooring.

    • @Winterascent
      @Winterascent Рік тому

Sycamore is not a species I usually see marketed for flooring, but I think it used find use as railroad ties due to being so tough and fibrous. Today, I believe paper pulp and fire wood are it's main use, though often the trees are large, rotten and grow in bottoms which are not often harvested. It's nice to see something like floors being made from it.

If you want to see quarter sawn lumber for furniture at its finest, do a search for Gustav Stickly. His signature pieces are done in quarter sawn white oak. Quarter sawing reveals the “rays” in the grain of white oak (and some others). You’ll recognize it when you see it in pictures of his work. There is an ongoing Stickly movement that keeps his style alive to this day.

  • @paulkramer4176

Nice wood, nice video. However, I'd suggest that the reason folks want quarter sawn is not that quarter sawn is stronger or anything, (it isn't) but that it is more dimensionally stable. That is, it doesn't cup or warp as easily as flat sawn, AND it doesn't shrink and expand as much as flat sawn. Of course the figure is usually much nicer too. But, as you said, it is much more labor to quarter saw wood. Besides flat sawn, of course there is Rift sawn, usually even more expensive.
Normally in quarter sawing, (at least in the method you are doing) one cuts the bottom board as you had it laying once quartered, then flip it to the other flat, and cut that one, then back to the original flat and so on. You would get more quarter sawn boards and total Bd ft, doing it that way.

If I were a flooring craftsman and received that stock of lumber quarter sawn the way you described it (lots of different board widths) would I then have to decide the width of my strips of flooring or would it be more likely you make that decision at the mill after it’s been dried?

You just plain sawed a quarter of the log at a time! You have to take off the bottom and turn the quarter after each cut to get the gain to be quarter sawn. By not turning the log at all what’s the difference of cutting it into quarters and putting those quarters back together and just plain sawing. Check end grain picture of how to quarter saw to see what I mean.

You have got a point. Btw. the German word for quarter sawn would translate to "radially sawn" which makes more sense in my opinion. By turning the log after every cut, you'd have radius-like boards, all of them being maximally quarter sawn, if that makes sense.

Yes, especialy in combination with mahogany.
First think at the begining of the video: "May be they wants to build an electric guitar?" :)

Nice to know Ed. Do you build as well as play guitar?

@@lcmmassa8571 I don't build guitars, I play. I really prefer finely crafted custom-made instruments rather than big-name factory builds. I have a custom-made 12-string, built by the late John Zeidler in 1984, you can see it on my channel.

99 percent of people will have no idea about quarter sawn timber. these are things joiners were taught back in the day. love the mill. nice piece of kit.

In my opinion, mastering quarter sawing is the crown jewel of lumber milling. And with sycamore, if it's not quarter sawn, it's just lousy firewood. Quarter sawing is not easy and is very time consuming but done correctly the value added to a log makes it worthwhile. There are several ways to quarter saw on a band mill, each having it's pros and cons. But the goal is to end up with the most QS boards. Unfortunately by taking the easiest approach you've ended up with (by my guess) maybe 15% QS. Cutting valuable hardwood is different than cutting hemlock. Wether quartering or grade sawing, if your boards are all the same width in the end, you're not getting the most "value added" from your log. There are many sources online for this including Wood Mizer that could help improve your yield and add to your bottom line.
It's a heck of a learning curve this business we're in. But you folks have learned fast and continue to improve daily. It's great to see what the next generation can do to advance this industry.
Keep up the good work and be safe.
