The population growth of the Philippines is really amazing when you consider that around 1830, the Philippines had 2.5 million people and Japan had 27.6 million people. It was absolutely dwarfed by Japan yet now it's on track to having a larger population!
The reason why developing countries are rapidly gaining population is this:
Basically, before modern medicine, countries had a lot of deaths, the main contributor being high infant mortality (a lot of kids dying before they grow up), so to compensate, families have a lot of kids to increase the chance that at least one kids survives and keeps the family going. Once countries are introduced to modern healthcare, they have a much lower infant mortality rate, but families continue to have a lot of kids as they have always done. This causes the birth rate to far exceed the death rate, and the result is a huge population boom.
This is what is happening in Africa now. This happened in Europe and NA in the early 1900s and Asia in the late 1900s. So in the 1800s, European families did typically have 8 to 10 kids because it was likely that only 2 or 3 would survive. Modern healthcare allows all the kids to survive, but it takes a few generations for families to tone it down and have only 2 or 3 kids. During that time, a population boom occurs

This will go down and I think that's a good thing, because otherwise we will have the same problem in the subsaharan Africa. Yes my country will increase by 10 million in the next 50 year, but by that time the population will have aged significantly with like 25 percent of the population older than 65.

My ancestors were mostly German and Irish immigrants and their descendants in the United States, and as late as the early 1900s they were pushing out anywhere from seven to twelve babies per generation. They were uneducated farmers who lacked modern medicine, meaning a lot of kids didn't even make it past their first few years.
It's not much different in the modern developing world, aside from the fact that now we have a lot of developed countries with insight, education, birth control, technology, medicine, money, and power to do something. The answer for Africa isn't self-righteous bigots wagging fingers at poor people. It's sustainable development. We all need to work together to make it happen.

Africa has higher rates due to rapid economic growth while western countries are on either on decline or stagnant due to aging population and developmental ceiling, there are countries like Uganda and etc who have GDP growths like 15% in a year...why? because they are so far behind that even a nominal economic growth translates in a huge economic shifts there. So it all boil downs to wealth distribution.
