As I'm living in Namibia I can say "investments" from other countries will go straight to the president and politicians' pockets, not the economy. Corruption is law here and in SA
Couldn't have said it better my friend, I know how u feel, governments are corrupt and people are scared of these corrupt governments because they control everything
I love how so many more countries are getting out of the poverty that is having 7 children with only 4-5 surviving. Not only is it making you hopeful, but it also means that we can stop letting all the talent go to waste. There are so many people out there with so many qualities and ideas that society needs.
Electric Angel No, bad. Follow Botswana’s example. They’re the least corrupt country in Africa, beating out countries like South Korea and Italy, they’re very prosperous, beating out China in GDP per Capita, and have strong democratic traditions. They’re the alternative to the authoritarianism in Rwanda.
I would really like to know, how we can really help sub saharan Africa. I heard that donating food or cloth do more harm than good, because they only cure the symptoms. I think we have to help Africa building a strong econemy. That said, we should not force african states into free trade agreements. I live in europe and I know that our agriculture is being subventioned very agressivly. Products like milk are then being importet from europe because the milk from african farmers just can't compete.
Seriously. Why are we making videos like this? This topic was a nightmare. How do you talk about a continent as diverse as Africa, to explain larger trends? Not only is there a wide variety of sources, experts disagree with each other on what they can predict about the future. So the time we took to rewrite this script over and over was insane. Still, there is no chance this video won’t make people angry, on all sides of this issue. Some may not agree with the conclusions we have come to. Some will think there are other aspects we could and should have mentioned. Or lament that we generalized too much. But we had to generalize or this video would just have become a hour-long documentary. And we think the topic is too important to not discuss it. So we read a lot and talked too many experts with very different opinions and interpretations. Also we tried to prepare our sources in a way that walks you through our thought process and helps you to make up your own mind. This video was sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of a Grant. They did not take part in the production of the video though. Its okay, your channel is called "Kurzgesagt" (Said shortly) after all. We generally don't expect/need you to present the full complexities of an issue :) There's other sources for that. (Btw. why is the comment older than the video?)
Coming from South Korea here, this video has a very legitimate point in my family history. My grandfather had 6 siblings, and 3 of them died before reaching adulthood. My father has 2 siblings, all of whom are alive and with children today. I am an only child, and I seem to be alive right now. Education wise, My grandfather finished only middle school, even though he was the eldest son and got more resources(none of his siblings received any education). My dad went to college, and now I am aiming for a degree. My, how times change.
Korea got colonized, exploited and culturally suppressed. Shortly after getting independent it had a big war which destroyed the country even more. In the 1950s it was one of the poorest countries in the world. And the big share of industry was in the socialist north. Also the country had no natural resources. So it relied mostly on smart decision making and they turned from one of the poorest countries to one of the richest and is a leading nation in technology. Africa on the other hand had a lot of intact infrastructure of it's colonial era and is extremely rich on resources. Yet they did make hardly any progress. Africa replaced it colonial exploiters by domestic exploiters and people willingly buy into the story that today's misery is exclusively caused in it's colonial era. I wish Africa all the best and I think there are many people great people living there. But Africa needs to start taking responsibility for itself. Korea did from a worse position and it paid off.
@@jellyorwhat3343 Thank you for highlighting our nation's recent history and development(I mean, I'm quite impressed)! As for African dictatorship's case, I think your opinion that African nations themselves have to start developing instead of blaming others is valid, but I also think it only tells half of the story(no offense!). I actually believe that it's the resources themselves that is hindering African development. Most (I'm severely generalizing here) African dictators sell their resources to foreign nations and use that revenue to keep the army loyal without any need for citizen involvement. That's why they dont have the incentive to educate, house, and develop their poor population. Korea, on the other hand, also suffered under a ruthless dictatorship, yet because we didn't have much resources to sell, our dictators were forced to educate, house, and develop the people in order to maintain a strong and loyal standing army(which was especially neccesary because of the North). It also helped that we didn't suffer any civil conflict after 1953, since our population was mostly ethnically homogenous. African statess, on the other hand, was mostly composed of many different nations who were often at odds with each other, who were forced into the same boundaries by European colonizers. The resulting near-constant state of civil war was a disaster for an already impoverished region. So if I were to blame anyone, it would be the African dictators who don't give a shit about their people, and the European powers also had a role to play. Emmanuel Macron's apology to Algeria was definitely a step in the right direction.
My friend's grandad: 7 siblings. My friend's dad: 8 siblings. My friend: 10 siblings. Pennsylvania Dutch people for some reason haven't had much of a significant drop in fertility rates.
Indian here, speaking of Indian population this video couldn't be more accurate. We had 4 phases in our country's population and we already had a population burst in 19's. Our population rate is significantly slowing down as our country is developing. Hopefully, soon we will be able to solve the problem of population in our country.
As another Indian Overpopulation is not a real thing We can easily afford to house, feed and educate our citizens just that we don't We are not growing fast We are declining in quality
@@TechboyFK this channel is a german channel and kurzgesagt means "in a nutshell". In video he said that without generalizing the video it would be an hour long. So langessagt means "in a long way" well dont judge me pls im not a native speaker pls dont hurt me
Yes, this was going to be a sensitive topic no matter what. I'm from Kenya and in a nutshell, agree with everything said. I understand the need to generalise and give approximates because honestly not even an hour is enough time to get through all the specifics. Objectively speaking, there shouldn't be any outrage towards this video of any kind. This video was a starting point to a conversation we (for those it concerns and would like to make it their concern) should be having. Great job.
The people who have found themselves "offended" by this video have rarely seen what grinding poverty looks like. Their textbook understanding leads them to believe that the people are simply not ready for education or contraception which is utterly ridiculous as the sole reason why some families in India have fewer kids per generation than others is education. When the women are more educated they value each child more dearly as they know that their child needs to have good education to move forward in life. When that education does not reach the poorest people, they fare worse every time. Its better to have fewer but highly educated children than lots of under-educated ones but until you give that knowledge to those families and those women, this will simply and unfortunately never change.
My only issue with this video is the fact they seem to think men have nothing to do with family planning and the creation of children. It only spoke about educating and helping women.
@@titusorelius9458 because it is proven that educating women decreases birth rates. And it's not like only women receive education, a lot of times in areas like this only the boys are educated in the first place. when countries spend more money on education it's not just going towards the girls it's going towards education in general with a focus on getting more girls in to school because they are the ones that are being left behind at a disproportional rate to boys. The more educated a woman is the less children she is going to have, this is a fact. Male education does nothing to drop the population rates.
It's just a disclosure to avoid youtube drama, they had a lot of it in the past because of some youtubers that believe to be too smart for their own good.
The reason for this is because Kurzgesagt got caught a couple years ago inserting personal positions and using iffy sources. They made a video about this called "Can you trust Kurzgesagt?"
Technically, if we ate the poor (canablism), we would solve poverty, world hunger and over population simultanously, and since you are what you eat, canables are the only humans.
@@Raymond160 That is not ethical. By that I mean what the majority of humanity defines as "ethical" in 2019 where everyone is, allegedly, equal and anyone has a right to voice their thoughts, again, allegedly.
The culture part is a major problem. Too many communities educate their boys all the way to university, but force the girls to drop out once they reach Grade 8.Teenage pregnancies plague those who opt to continue past Grade 8 and so do issues like poverty and getting a poor quality education in the rural schools
'This topic is too complex to summarise in a few sentences so we'll make a whole video about it in the future' Just that. That drive to educate us. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard and I wish we had so much more of it in the world. Never change, Kurzgesagt.
@VincentHanna121 the globalist agenda. When they started this it was global warming. The people pushing it went in the night before and turned off all the AC where the meeting was held on the hottest day that year. They wanted to show people sweating so americans watching would think things were way worse than they were. Just like all the other crap they said that would happen that hasn't
In Indonesia: father: has 13 siblings mother: has 3 siblings me: has 2 sisters 3 of us haven't has kid. We are in our 30s I am nearly 40. My grandfather from mother side is highly educated (Master degree equivalent) and come from wealthy family, but during his time, it is very important to have sons (male heir) all 4 of their children are educated. My grandfather from my father side is much older generation, skillful tailor but less educated. He believe more children will bring more prosperity to his clan. He has 14 children (1 die as toddler, 2 adopted by other family). My father in his childhood life in poor family but all the children are educated. Male to highschool and female at least 6th grade + informal education. When they become adult, older children work and help to support their younger siblings. Most of them become wealthy because they use to be hardworking and careful with money. My mother has 2 miscarriages and she give birth to 3 daughters. I think my parents originally wanted 2 children (one boy one girl) but when after 2 daughters are born, you know, their relatives will persuade them to try give birth to another baby hoping it will be a son. Note: yes there were patriarchal discrimination long time ago (like 30-70 years ago).
The most important obstacle in underdeveloped countries is government corruption. There's no goodwill towards citizens from government even when there's literally no cost to change things for better. Some people just like to make a profit out of misery of their own citizens. That's sad true.
excuse me, but government comes from citizens... it's not like a foreigners get invaded and grab all money. I live in Ukraine (undeveloped country) and can prove that citizens by themselves accelerate corruption by bribes, lies and careless.
If it's corrupted, half of the money could be spend for the people while half it would be invested. If it's unstable. Zero of the money would be spend on the people. Even some dictator sought to improve the country so that there's more money to be taken. You can't take a non existent money from poor people. Just look at china lol
As a Bangladeshi, I would like to thank Kurzgesagt for mentioning the progress Bangladesh has been making over last few decades. I would like to add one thing. Bangladesh went through a devastating war and genocide in 1971, yet it was able to not let itself crippled by the consequences. I am certain that Sub-Saharan African countries too will show same extent of resilience toward progress.
I think African countries are under the thumb of IMF-World Bank from debt, which leads to austerity measures as well as the export of raw materials and agricultural products for paying the debt instead of measures to improve society. How did Bangladesh get away from them, if they did?
@@sandal_thong8631 how? Corruption isn't a culture in Bangladesh. When the opposition overthrow a corrupt government, they didn't immediately get to lining their own pickets.
South Asian nations in the 1970s: Let’s gradually and indirectly shift the children birth rate so that our society can adapt China in the 1970s: One, take it or leave it.
UntamedPandaSweg also anything can sound bad when you spin it that way language is immensely powerful after all. Throwing your opinions out wherever you feel like makes you sound foolish
A big problem in Africa is that it gets heavily exploited whenever it takes a serious step in the right direction Like Libya, got invaded by NATO for cheaper oil when it was the most prosperous nation in Africa😭
I mean no??? I'm pretty sure its mostly US fighters and Turkish support in Libya (if that) and the Libyan Civil War is more about the government vs the army as far as i'm aware. Gaddafi was assassinated yes, but he wasn't a good leader, he was a dictator.
@juleous camper You’re mostly right except for the fact that Africa wasn’t “mostly” hunter-gatherer, it had empires and civilisations, hunter-gatherers were not the majority. Europe were quote, unquote hunter-gatherers for quite long despite the fact the narrative is that they were advanced and one of the most advanced.
As an African I can tell you there is very little chance we will replicate Asia. Reason being the abundant corruption that plagues our countries. As long as our countries are ruled by liberation parties that believe they are owed for the years the fought for ‘“liberation’ and also charismatic leaders, a small African elite will benefit from any economic investment. We need to rid ourselves of the ruling elite and put forward selfless educated young minds. This will create the knock on effect that will lead to economic development and everything suggested by this video. Unfortunately our leadership is here to stay and the west and China are happy doing business with them. There is more to this and as u said it’s complicated. The only way out I think is mass revolutions
Is there anything being done to combat corruption? I sympathise with you guys, you've been through a lot. But apathy solves nothing. You've pointed out a revolution. Is there something similar happening?
@@flytrapYTP I mean it's not quite simple. Seeing Africa's history, the fear of civil war is always imminent and doesn't encourage people to rise in a revolution. Rwanda, South Soudan, Somalia... Another point is international intervention. Many elite groups who rule these nations have strong ties with their previous colonizers, ensuring good deals for the colonizers, and weapons and militias for the ruling elite. Case and point: Congo. Colonial powers still benefit today largely from their colonial history under the cover of neo-capatilsm. West Africa still picks its currency after the Frech Franc. I find it yet baffling that the investment projects China is leading in Africa are bigger than what the US or EU did for years. Fair foreign investment is the best way to build an infrastructure, connect cities and towns, and provide jobs and money to develop a socially and politically stable environment. Ethiopia did it after witnessing famines in the 90's. Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and others are doing it now. There's hope for other Sub Saharan nations, but not as long as weapon companies in the North still profiting from government-approved gun sales. The best you can do as a middle-class citizen in North America or Europe is to pressure your politicians to stop unethical gun sales to conflict groups in developing nations. The US under Trump sold guns to Saudi Arabia while it's using them to fuel the war in Yemen, just so the US could get some good oil deals. This is the least you could do. Donations and gifts don't do much. But this is way more significant...
@@kuzzam6626 Hey thanks for the info. I have heard about the shit that China is setting up in Africa, it almost looks like second-wave colonalism. I've also seen a ton of racists use China as a way to show 'hypocrisy' in decolonising Africa during European/American colonialism. And there also seems to be a fuckton of environmental issues in East Africa with the flooding and cyclones and what not. I'm not even of age to vote yet, but I'll keep your advice in mind. I come from a relatively small and silent European country that doesn't have much say regarding intercontinental relations (I mean for God's sake, even Syrian immigrants skip our country and go to Germany instead), but if I see an opportunity to speak up, I will try.
@@flytrapYTP the environmental problems majorly stem from climate change, whose effects are palpable here in Europe. Global warming will affect Africa greatly and horribly causing more droughts and uncontrollable floodings. I currently live in Germany but I come from Tunisia (North Africa). The risk of drought in North Africa will be detrimental in the next 10 years as my country is running out from renewable water sources( mostly rain, we don't have major rivers since we don't have really high mountains to collect snow and rain). No matter how small you believe your role is, it still matters. Engage in conversations, raise awareness and be kind to refugees and immigrants because most of the times, conditions are not as favourable or generous from where they come from. No one chooses simply to leave everything behind.
I lived on all 3 of those continents and corruption is not something special to Africa. Bangladesh is known for abundant corruption as well. I don't think the issue is can Africa replicate Asia and Europe, but should it? Colonialists kill Africans for hundreds of years then tell them to stop having children too. Lots of things were missing from this video, as stated. Western development was not sustainable, so copying it isn't smart either. In agricultural economies, children are an asset instead of merely a cost. In spite of being "over-populated" these countries often contribute less to global warming and mass extinction.
Can we talk about how beautiful these characters look and how they really do reflect the multitude of different looks of Africa? I know it's small but the attention to detail is worth the praise.

It's what Western Europe had to do. And things started to change for people. Believe me, some of the countries are trying their hardest to open up. I've been to Africa twice in my life. Beautiful people and countries. And I even remember one of the leaders from an African country who was once a colony of France, who was having a speech with Macron. And one thing he said was, "We (as in African nations) need to let our young people know that we need them here in their homelands. We need to stop having them flock to Europe and North America, in order to live better." He meant this by saying, Africans have got to start developing in best ways and start taking better care of our people. I agree with him. I believe there has got to be changes like he would mention.

Except they didn't do a good job at all. They provided a bunch of statistics based on linear projection (literally the least accurate predictive model possible), presented the historical evidence that proves their own conclusion wrong, and then concluded by ignoring that evidence repeating and repeating that linear projection data again as their conclusion. That's not how science works!
@@johnbalverde1180 If you understand what "Linear Projection" as a statistical model is, you know enough to know that the prediction summary @ 5:44 isn't likely to happen even ignoring the historical data. I live in Ethiopia and I was actually discussing a tough housing project with my partner little before watching this video. Over the months, we architecture students have gotten to the point of fighting when talking about how to make houses for the poorest slum dwellers in the city. THERE'S JUST SO MANY PEOPLE. And they just keep increasing, not just by natural birth but also by rural to urban migration from the 80% rural population. I took part in the T2D rural to urban migration project and found that what exists is not just a housing problem. I participated in an AU youth conference and found that it's not just a social/tribal/ethnic issue at hand either. The fear, stubbornness, and selfishness that aggravates everything on every level of this society are not unique to this part of the world. But it manifested itself on an intense level here. So, thank you Kurzgesagt for even beginning to tackle a problem that feels like it's taken the form of an unbudging monster. Don't be afraid to state the problems and factors that I know you found in your research when it comes to the Sub-Saharan context. I'll go back to work on my assignment with an extra burst of energy, I think. You can see my channel for the videos I make about the reality I take part in for now and subscribe to follow up on that.
@Bro9650 ooof. In many ways, there's a lot happening, boo. In the five years I spent here alone, so much stuff was built. But when you *exist* in the city, you're caught up in a lot of the immediate stuff that make you feel like everything's going wrong all the time
@R I'm pretty sure high density housing is about the worst possible option. Correct me if I'm wrong. That just sounds like a planned slum. Higher density means less room for living and good infrastructure, less sanitation etc.
@R In post war eastern Germany we built such blocks with preproduced concrete parts to house all the people of the destroyed cities. They didn't look very nice but did their job. In fact these flats were pretty popular since they already had district heating which wasn't all that common in that time. As a fellow civil engineer I trust your skills to come up with some good solutions. Even though the circumstances may be difficult from time to time. 👍
An issue rarely discussed when addressing the issue of overpopulation is the tradition of parents using children as a form of 'pension plan'. Many have a large number of children in order to ensure that they can be assured that at least one can care for them in later life. Although this wouldn't exactly solve the population issue, it could help if greater investment was put into caring for the elderly. It could give the impression that there is less of a need to have so many children and would free up those already born to contribute more to the economy, helping to increase development.
That's true, or used to be true when children had a low survival rate, in rural communities and isolated areas. If, and when kids have a higher chance of getting to adult age, and working on a safe environment with a retirement plan, that practice will disappear. That's why health, education, and an overall development of the entire economy is needed to raise the quality of life, and ironically, stop the overpopulation explosion. In fact, the most developed countries have a stale, or even a decreasing population number, since people see having kids as a sacrifice or an obligation, rather than a "long-term benefit".
yea those are the kind of people that only have kids for the purpose of having someone to leech off they're old, it's hilarious when that plan backfires when the kid eventually grows balls and cuts all contact
💡Interesting fact : As of now India alone have more population than Entire continent of Africa which is roughly 10 times bigger! Bangladesh have more Population than biggest country in the world Russia which is about 115 times bigger!!!
Wow. Sad and insightful. But I really do think the population issue is the exact inverse. Declining fertility rates from a combination of GMOs, plastics, EMFs, and high carb/low nutrient dieting has decimated the Western world's men. When Africa industrializes, it too shall fall victim to the species wide castration.
That a bad sign , big demographic increase without an increase of GDP and standard of living create an unemployed young population that'll be the source of instability (the same thing happens in the middle East ; corrupted and untrustworthy leaders help too). I live in DR Congo and the great lakes region is the region filled with militias commiting atrocities and the region is also the most densely populated of the country .

Actually, if an economy is booming, China has less leverage to convince African leaders to "sellout" to China. The better Africa does on their own, the better. China finds it easier to "negotiate" (debt trap) with countries when they are in desperate need, like Venezuela for example, or North Korea.
@@cleitonoliveira932 "Enemy" is an irrelevant term here. China is doing the same thing as the US. They take control of weaker countries through any means necessary. China also punishes countries who displease the CCP.
Most women, when asked directly, are very interested in having the ability to choose when they can become pregnant. I didn't say anything about the number of children, but just the ability to space out births and to delay the birth of the first child would have an effect on population growth, and culturally as well.
@Mia Novalic It's mostly a cultural thing. Some people are far more reluctant to change the way things have always been for humanity than others. Religion does have a large part to do with it. As religion itself is one of those anchors to the past. But for 10's of thousands of years things were one way... and only in the last 100 years have things changed. Once upon a time humans needed rigid structure in society and religion to give them hope, nowadays things are far more flexible, but people's attitudes aren't.

@@thecrippledpancake9455 well usually it is the husbands that decide when to have sex because that´s also part of the culture. @@florp1230 But it is realted to the reason things like education and health care aren't seen a priority, which the video highlighted as a major influence on population reduction. I’m glad to see Africa’s come to Kurzgesagt’s attention. I hope that the video that will be made in the future will talk more on the horrible, rampant corruption that’s pretty commonplace in Africa - if you can’t make any generalizations at all, you can at least be sure of assuming there’s a huge corruption problem here - and how it’s seriously stagnating this part of the world. Amazing video as always. ❤
I'm a teenager in Kenya and these stats make a lot of sense. I would have loved for you to talk more about how majority of African women educated /uneducated venture into entrepreneurship to help out in the economic growth and investing in the youth education. Interesting statistics thanks.
It's more complicated than that. It would decrease accessibility by a wide margin, thereby lowering net viewership. In today's society, people love bit-sized content more over lengthier ones cuz of lack of time. ergo the loner the clip, the less will be willing to watch who would otherwise might have tuned in. If you think about it, what they're trying to achieve is great. They're making important or interesting topics more accessible to a much wider audience than just the ones looking for documentaries and sciencey stuff, thereby increasing exposure and awareness on some very critical topics.

I assure, those people who find offense in this video are just white liberals who are virtue signalling.

As long as our countries are ruled by liberation parties that believe they are owed for the years the fought for ‘“liberation’ and also charismatic leaders, a small African elite will benefit from any economic investment. We need to rid ourselves of the ruling elite and put forward selfless educated young minds.

Over population is a myth
Since this video released in 2019 the population of Africa has gone from 1.3 to 1.4 billion. So nearly 8% in 2 years.
Too little for the second largest continent, this guy is just crazy and has delusions of africa

The fluidity of your animations are insane.
The people individually move, they don’t stand still, that’s crazy.
You put other Education channels and several other animated channels to shame.
Hat’s off to each and every last one of your animators.
You should be within the top 10 most subscribed channels on the platform.
The work and research you do is next level, very few channels can match you in that aspect.
I look forward to seeing you in those rankings.
Keep it up.
I always wondered how to replicate it. It reminds me of something like Hey Duggee

1:32 “This video would be an hour long.”
To be honest, we wouldn’t mind that happening.
Same here
Animators would die
True, but do they really have the economy for an hour long video?
It takes an incredible amount of work to make 5 mins of this
It's more complicated than that.
Now imagine Bill Gates explaining and presenting this. How would the comments and reactions be like?

I love how this topic addresses many things
but you have to remember corruption,
corruption is widespread and one of the reasons Africa doesnt manage to develop
@SilverMuxsin and those numbers of people are lunatics living in their basements
A friend of mine is from Senegal and he told me that everything is corrupt there. You go to the post office you need to bribe to have your parcel sent ( or pretended to be sent ) , in hospital the same. As a Senegalese you cannot have business otherwise your relatives will come and pretend to have things for free. He said it is a mentality thing. Big corruption from abroad indeed exists but local corruption is to be taken into account also.

there is one thing that people overlook when it comes to africa. in as much as we are lagging behind compaired to the rest of the world, the advantage is atleast we get to observe and learn from mistakes and challanges of those who are way ahead of us,
we've learned very important lessons like
1. the effects of highly processed foods inc sugar
2. side effects of certain birth control methods
3. the downsides of encouraging women to focus solely on career, but instead to find balance btwn career and family coz the latter is equally important if not more.
4. the effects of being too comfortable as a society/country, you tend to lose site of whats imortant and what's valued like waking up in the morning, seeing the stars, watching the sunset, being around family and friend, loving and helping others and instead you get whiny about small things like how you should be refered to as and all these other self imposed pronouns going around, to the point of confusing what a man and a woman is...
(lets not even get started on the slow degeneration of people into something resembling psychotic aliens as witnessed on social media)
5. the effects of war, most soldiers dying in a war believing they were fighting for a course which turns out to be false, so yes, before taking arms against a brother, is he really the enemy or they made you believe he is
6. the effects of overvalueing material possesions over other things in life
7. the effects of parenthood on a child, single mums, neglectful dads, and all those following up to how the kid turns out
8. we are not so different regardeless of skin color, tone, region, country... an asian can be a good friend of mine just as a black african(kenyan) can e my enemy
list is long and yes we still face some of these challenges but atleast we see them coming.
african we are
Oh please shove off with your anti-lgbt agenda
