  • The first batch of Bachmann's eagerly anticipated Class 117 Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) for 'OO' gauge arrived during June. In the latest issue of Hornby Magazine we take an in-depth look at the Network SouthEast liveried set as well as Kernow Model Rail Centre's exclusive limited-edition of unique GW150 liveried set B430 in WR chocolate and cream.
For this video we had the opportunity to run the two samples alongside one of our own purchases - the original BR green set - as well as as Kernow's limited edition of the Class 121 DMU in GW150th chocolate and cream.
Watch the samples in action here, read the full review in HM158 or online at:

Classic Class 117 dmu, what a difference these made to commuting when they first appeared on the scene.

These have to be one of the best DMUs made for oo gauge.

Excellent video as always. I'm looking forward to getting my BR Green Class 117. Bachmann have really pushed the boat out with these latest DMUs and they have certainly been well worth the wait. I saw one of the samples on display at Warley in 2019. The detail differences between the models is superb. Keep up the great work. :)

Interesting video of the DMU's, takes me back to the years of 1970's & 80's when I was at Birmingham New Street train spotting, nice sound of the dmu's passing each other. Ian Thompson. 😊

They look very well detailed and the finish of the livery is excellent. I need to get a couple of sets of the coach roundels for my 1960s and a later version of the Diesel Rail Car 101s. I will be using them on a branch line on my LNER layout as guests. Martin. (Thailand)

I have the BR green set and the BR green bubble. It’s well expensive and difficult to take apart. If you have the space keep it coupled. Don’t like the cartel aspect manufactures are taking with their own decoders. Runs superb and I might get a sound chip and shove the plux from this into my EFE LT Bachmann set

Shame, if they had produced a 117 in plain British Rail Blue, a long-lived livery, I would have had one!

A rrp of £314.95 nothing like encouraging youngsters or those on a limited budget and this is nothing like it!

I know, right? My young lad wants a Porsche but can’t afford one. I’m disgusted. What are Porsche doing to make their cars affordable for those on a limited income, that’s what I want to know.

@@aureol40012 If you are throwing a sarcastic pineapple at overpricing I applaud you. If you are using it as a barb to deflate a view that part of the barrier to widening the appeal of our interest beyond the perception of it being the reserve of old, wealthy, middle-class men, not so good.
Hornby are perceptive to this, hence the Steam Punk range you could purchase 7/8 locos for the price of this model.
If a young person reaches out to this rather than a Nintendo, excellent, it will help to support and nurture the next generation- break down barriers not reinforce.

Same as always, it's just TOO EXPENSIVE.

Pity the roof has no ribs on it like the prototype good old Bachmann just can get a model 100% and at the price such a pity
