    "Ein bisschen Frieden" from Nicole has won the Eurovision song context in 1982. And in the 80s there was the "Neue deutsche Welle" (New german Wave) which were more cocky and had often political messages as well. German Schlager is more about rainbow and butterflies. The EAV Erste allgemeine Verunsicherung is an austrian band which exists since 1977. They are famous for their bizarre costumes and crazy lyrics. And although they are a serious band, they don't want to be taken that serious. But they are great.
    And then there was Milli Vanilli, the greatest scam in music history. Both of them can't sing any straight note and where only chosen as the pretty face to the music. The actual band behind it came to light eventually and exposed them. But after starting under the name The real Milli Vanilli they had not really success.

    • @j0hnn13K
      @j0hnn13K 3 місяці тому +8

      About Milli Vanilli, one could sing, albeit he wasn't a great singer, the other was a dancer.
      Sadly the whole deal hit both of them hard and it ended up with one of them taking his own life years later.
      Quite a sad story if you think about it, because it was not really a secret, their producer being the same guy behind Boney M, who also famously were not the original singers. (at least not the guy in Boney M, unsure about the girls)

    • @Andermonda
      @Andermonda 3 місяці тому +2

      @@j0hnn13K It is sad for sure for an ending like that. But I have to disagree about the part that one of them could sing. After the reveal during a press conference they tried to defend themself and neither of them could hold a single tone even by accident. If the real singers would have gotten a better deal to keep silent, it would have been better for both sides. Cause without the faces of the puppets the music didn't matter that much after all. It had to be the complete package.

    Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung at 6:50 was a rather famous austrian parodistic pop band. They retired only a few years ago in 2019. The band's name literally translates to First General Unsettledness deriving from Erste Allgemeine Versicherung/First General Assurance which was a well known austrian insurance company. The band liked to fool around heavily both in their texts and performances. But in their songs there also exists an important socially critical undertone. Many of their songs are considered iconic. Ding Dong, Fata Morgana, Märchenprinz (fairy tale prince), Afrika, Banküberfall (bank robbery) songs that still crack me up today. Subversive humor before all of that PC nonsense.

The type of music genre they belonged to at the time was called Eurobeat - dance synth music that was originally popular in gay clubs, especially in the UK, but then some of them moved more into mainstream. The penguin you just saw was the mascot of the Austrian band "Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung" (First General Uncertainty) or EAV for short. The band was popular during the 80ies and had funny lyrics or at least lyrics that one shouldn't take that serious and were meant to get you in a good mood. The 80ies was a weird time anyways in terms of music. A new genre or more like a pop culture came up called "Neue Deutsche Welle" (New German Wave) or NDW for short which almost anything you saw falls under. It is the time where songs like Amadeus by Falco or 99 Luftballons (99 red ballons) by Nena were a hit -also in the US by the way. The lyrics were mainly in German (hence New German Wave) and I don't think they all sounded pretty much the same. Music wise it was a very diverse time with influences from all over the world and electronic music had a big influence. Edelweis is a flower only growing on mountains in very specific conditions and therefor very rare and it is commonly known as the symbol of the alps.

    Hello Joel. At school in UK "Ein Bisschen Frieden" was used to help get the kids to learn about German music, since it won Eurovision and was on TV. We then had some more traditional German songs introduced into the lessons. It was a way of bringing the language to life and giving some cultural references more of a meaning.
    The other song that was memorable was by Nena, released in English, but slighty different.
    Later in the decade there were TV pop music programmes on TV satellite channels that went all across Europe, so the style altered fro Eurovision to MTV.

    1988 #4 is by an Austrian subversive comedy group called "Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung" (first general uncertainty, which in itself is a wordplay with an existing insurance's name "Erste Allgemeine Versicherung" or first general insurance). It's about a womanizer who desperately wants to get in the pants and bed of a girl he just met. He woos her with the whole repertoire of chivalrous gestures until she falls for him. But when she calls him full of love the next day he tells her not to bother him again bc he's married with children and a dog. In the booklet of the album, there is a comic panel telling the story with the protagonists being penguins. and this is their stage show. The group was legendary for their stage performances like Rammstein but because of other causes, They had top 20 hits for over a decade. Even when they touch more serious topics (e.g. Chornobyl and the literal/figurative(?) fallout) it's always with a lot of (very black) humor. One song was translated into English and got a UK release. If you want to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/4gSEhNPKT9g/v-deo.html

    Edelweiß (Leontopodium nivale) is a mountain flower at home in the Alps, belonging to the sunflower family. Edelweiß grows in the high Alps of about 1800 - 3500 metres and is the ultimate symbol of alpinism. Edelweiß is also is also a symbol of rugged beauty and purity.

    'Edelweiss'is an flower in the Alps, I gess it was a popular 'after ski' song and it was a cover from ABBA 's 'SOS'. But you only have half of the picture:the other half was not in the Bilboard, it was'the music of the youth' like Heavy Metal with groups like Van Halen or Iron Maiden, Rock like Marius Müller-Westernhagen, his song'Sexy'was famous and a'Scandal' or for us girlsPeter Maffay, especially his album/LP/record called 'Tabaluga'🙂

They sang in English and looked cool, that was enough. My dad loved Boney M, we had multiple records by them.

The you have Michael Schenker a great German guitarist for UFO and his own band and his brother Rudolf who was in the most famous German rock band of the late 70's and 80's The Scorpions. Edelweiß (Leontopodium nivale) is a rare flower which grows in the mountains of Bavaria and Austria. To pick up an Edelweiß and give it to the girl who you love is a popular symbol. You are brave enough and patience enough to take the adventure of searching for one of this rare flowers and of course it blooms on the highest mountain. And a hunter or Police man is just waiting for you to shot you, because it is forbidden to pick up an Edelweiß or just because they hate young romantic love. But you take the risk to die and try to pick it up anyway to show the girl you love how much she means to you.
    That is the "old story line"(or how you call that kind of things in English) that is connected with that flower.

    I'm quite surprised that you haven't heard of Edelweiss - as most of the Americans I know knew that word...
    "Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me. Small and white, clean and bright you look happy to greet me." might ring a bell - or bring Season vibes.
    Edelweiss is a small, white flower found in the Alps. Edelweiss translates to "noble white" and it was seen as a symbol of noble purity, pure love and courage (as you had to climb on the mountains to get it). It is today fully protected and must not be picked - just remember if you plan to visit the Alps on your next trip to Europe.
    And Edelweiss is also an Austrian beer brand.

    I'm surprised that Katja Ebstein's "Theater" didn't make it in 1980. I was in Europe and mainly Germany all that summer, and "Theater" was HUGE, and got 2nd place at Eurovision.
    I'm also noticing that at the beginning there was still a lot of what was known as "Schlager" music, which was a style that went back to the 1950's, but it was finally fading out by the end of the decade. Freddy Quinn was probably the most famous Schlager singer.
    Edelweiss is a flower, and the subject of a famous song from The Sound Of Music.
