That "what the hell?!" with a giggle ... JINX!! 😂
@@ElonaldTrusk I was blown away!
Nice demonstration! I think much of the junk going on in certain circles is deliberate misinformation. Not only is edge retention better on many new steels, but toughness is also improved.
@@LastChanceKnives yes that is exactly it!
You should test the way you want to. It’s nice to see what the knives can do
@@kathleensmith370 I agree. Thank you!
Great fun video. I love how much fun and joy you are having in this video. Thanks for sharing and God Bless.
It was such a blast!
Loved it! I will bet I am one of the oldest comment writers and have been an outdoorsman for many decades. Never needed to baton but, OTOH, it is a good test and while my chances of batoning are low, they are not zero. I admire your willingness to challenge what "everyone knows".(or has been convinced of by mass marketing.) Just for shits and grins maybe try to find a similar design/size knife, well made, in "old" D2 and give it a similar test. In my young days D2 &52100 werepremium steel. We all had to trade in our bronze knives to try that new fangled steel stuff.😅
@@user-ny5jc4qc6r It’s in the works!
This was really fun to watch👍Nice one, E!
Thanks so much for watching D! I appreciate you!
You’re so funny I love how into it and happy these tests make you!!! 🤣 Your arms must be tired! That’s fucking badass, those knives did so well!!!
@@nicoledodge7240 my arms are TOASTED after the last 3 days!!!!🤣🥰
There is a reason why K390 is such a darling with the knife nerds! There is a dude on the spyderco forums who would give his wife different knives of his to use and misuse as a non-knife person, so that means lots of abusive tasks. She managed to destroy most edges fairly quickly scraping shit off surfaces, cutting on ceramic, cutting into staples ect ect in my experience no one can destroy an edge faster than a non-knife person. however there was one notable exception: Spyderco’s K390, she liked it so much I think he gave her the knife to keep.
I've been putting an endura wharny k390 through the ringer on my property(Sierra nevadas)... I'm thoroughly impressed. It takes an amazing patina from hot apple cider vinegar and 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to agitate the surface of the steel.
K390 really is for us nerds!!!
K390 is TOUGHER than 1095 at ANY hardness. It is especially tougher at 60+ HRC.
It's a "super steel" for a reason.
@@matthewf1979 THANK YOU🥰
We know how Erica loves her “danglies”. Another great video, Lil Homie. Those knives worked like a champ! Went through some tough logs and will still cut your steak. You are definitely keeping your **** hand strong. Lol
Hehe!!! Thanks for watching!!!!
Awesome…good job on that second one
@@georgia_adventurer all this was so fun!
Lets go!!!
Hey man!🎉
Great video as always!
Thank you!
Always good to see a vid from you. Lost grandpa yesterday and then a few hours ago I found out my uncle was found dead so videos from friends are always good to see
@@dualsportedc omg Z. I am praying for you man.
K390 is my JAMMMM.
It’s literally the best
wow, great field work with testing real world activities. This is what most people will be doing and we get to see a real test. I love it. Great job!
Thank you so much man!
Hey Erica,
Does anyone make Scandi ground knives in supersteels?
The geometry of the scandi is ideal for splitting, the shoulders wedge the timber apart
The thin knives can baton, but are not necessarily designed for it.
Take care
Graham
Yes! Adventure Sworn makes a Mountaineer in 3V which I have. Big scandi ground knife. I love beating on it!!!!
Very good results Erica and I was sure both of the steels would be fine.
I couldn't do that many "shots" as I'm allergic to needles and injections.
@@mikep.9371 HAHA! Love you Mike!!
Those steels did incredible! Next time maybe find thinner limbs though, hard to baton with a short knife 😅.
@@Knife_guy it was fun to push them at least!
Good evening Ms E. Good show👍👍👍. Enjoy your day tomorrow. 🇺🇲🌲🔥🔪
@@jasonaffeldt7838 I sure will!!!! Thanks man. You too!!!
Hear! Hear!
Hey man!
I don’t think batoning is all that rough on a fixed blade knife. The edge is only really in contact to start, then it wedges the wood apart. Except if you hit rocks after going all the way through of course. Never had a failure. Also, it’s far safer than swinging an axe and weighs far less in the backcountry. Plus it’s fun IMO. I don’t know why so many people cringe on comments. I like the channel btw! Keep it up!
@@shamitoson hey thanks so much!
I like the design shape size handles and looks of both those knifes is there a website or place to go to be able to buy those blades or were they made spacifically for you?
And see no batoning questions or comments lol!
I do enjoy your content Erica I think you have a wealth of good knowledge to share.
@@BravoBassin I provided links in the description- check them out!!! Also here’s the link directly to Primitive Bear Knives website. www.primitivebearknives.com/
@@BravoBassin Both the Slater and the Edisto are knives that are continuously available for purchase to the public!
@@ericasedc thanks Erica I looked in the discription must have mist them some how but thanks for responding and letting me know and giving me the link appreciate it.
@@ericasedc thanks again Erica appreciate it.
@@BravoBassin Glad to help!!! Both makers deserve the support
Beat those knives like a tough steak. I love my super steels.
@@geraldkoth654 same and even more after this!
The worst edge retention I ever had was a CRKT in 3cr steel,it would go dull almost from nothing major. But I agree that 1095 has crummy edge retention, and isn’t very tough.if I had to chose I would take some 3v or 4v,or maybe magnacut or cruware,or even AEB-L.anyway good video,I enjoy your content, keep up the good work!
Magnacut seems to be an excellent outdoor knife steel. Very tough at high hardness, great edge retention and extremely stainless.
I'm waiting for an Architect AK6.5 in Magnacut before I can really know for sure.
Sounds good!
@@jaxonbeilner9258 yes!
loving this
Thanks so much man!!!
Then I saw her face, and now I’m a believer! Going to go buy something ridiculously expensive, and beat the shit out of it. You have proved your point. 21:08
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hm, these knives are no worse than my Mora Companion, who would have thought 😂
What kind of pants are you wearing? Better than a strop 😁
Good job Erika, respect 👏
@@noname-wt3zw Target mens cargo shorts!
It might be different for others obviously but ive never actually needed to baton wood before with my knife in my 3 decades of hiking and camping experience.
@@ix8750 thanks for sharing!
I baton, never needed an axe
@@shamitoson Same
@@shamitosonMedium sized knife and a folding saw is definitely lighter!
I was looking at the website of the guy who made your K390 knife. Your knife is nicer than anything else on his website. He needs to put an example and a price on his site. I want one. Will he ship to the UK?
@@twatmunro ask him. I provided links 🥰Thanks so much for watching!
Im thinking these steels would make excellent survival knives.
They very well may!🎉❤😊
SLATAAAAAA🎉🎉🎉🎉
Eyyyy man!!!!
Respect. That’s what I’m taking about. Super seasoned and knotty wood. Giving them knives hell.👊💪
They both nailed this!!!!
@@ericasedc Sure did!👌
My only issue using a knife to baton through wood is if the knife has jimping on the spine. Instant weak point to start a break.
EDIT: Oh thank goodness. That skinny little K390 had me worried. And yes I've seen knives break at the jimping. Glad this wasn't one.
@@robertbarker5802 that Slater had a lot of jimping… 🥰
Hi Etica, where can we purchase those knives ❤❤
@@JosePena-zj7dy please use the links provided in the description!
Don’t you dare stop batoning that piece….
You best get a bigger baton and put some ass in to it…
I should have but my arms were SO JELLY from the saw!!!! I don’t know if I could swing a heavier baton!😂❤🎉
Damn you are making me cringe and my butt hole pucker watching this. I was expecting broken tips, chipped edges a slip and a cut leg or finger. Very impressed by the results. Thanks Erica. Please stay safe.
This made me laugh Tim!!!!❤🎉
Meeting mom in the bush again 🤦🏻♂️🙈
