Having fished many brands over the years, I gotta say that this reel is one of the best my hands have touched. It’s been tested on long fights on triple digit tarpon, performing flawlessly. I’m a busy fishing guide in the keys with over 15 years of experience.

Sage has made some great big game reels for a long time, starting in 2001 with the 3600D and continuing on from there. I have the 3000, the 8000, the 8000 Pro, and 4200 models, and they are all darn good.
    A 10/12 at 15 ounces?!? Wow! That's an anchor for a 10 weight.

Assuming price is not a factor, pros and cons of the Thermo vs. Make 9600B which you also reviewed.

Sage are pricing themselves out of the market here in the UK. The asking price for this reel is £699 which is about $911. Why would anyone buy this reel against something like a Hardy Zane which is $300 cheaper.

It’s a good reel but what’s the point of a mid price big game fly reel? Saltwater gamefish aren’t exactly the working man’s game.

Hatch reels are great, for sure. However, the Thermo is an excellent big game reel with tons of stopping power!
