“Realistically, a game, should take longer than that to develop to be good” 2014 base game Sims 4 is cricketing bestie
LMAO
Well ts4 base game isn't good so
@@defsouul3127 that was my point, it took 5 years to develop TS4, and it launched with barely anything. No pools, toddlers, lagging etc.
@@LOEVALENTINE One of the reasons was because they had to start over almost entirely from scratch.
@@Terestraszsorry, do you know why that is? i’m catching up with a lot of sims info and i’m not sure where to start when looking into this
I had this when I was a kid and thought it was it’s own stand- alone sims game. I remember just walking around looking at stuff not realising you could put stuff in your actual game ☠️
🤣🤣🤣
me when i begged my mum to get me the sims makin magic.
Lmao “man this game is hard”
me when i first played pokemon and i spent the entire time in a cave and spamming tackle cause i didn’t know how it worked
@@gretabianco1283 I did the same thing with sims 2 seasons. When I went to install it, major disappointment.
The ultimate shovelware: THAT DAMN U2 ALBUM WE DIDNT ASK FOOOOOOOR
she kinda slayed tho ngl
I feel like this moment is the millennial / gen-z divide
@@solssun do y'all even remember U2?
That's more like adware
this was more triggering than i had expected
There's a whole bunch of illegal EPs that were made for The Sims 2 and 3 in Russia: stuff like Harry Potter, Sex in the City, a bunch of Russian TV shows, etc. They were basically a collection of custom content of a specific theme, sims, houses and/or neighborhoods from the show/movie. I personally was gifted the Sex in the City one and let me tell you, the mods that were included in that EP as well, traumatize me a little, with straight up p*rn playing on all TV channels. And also you could woohoo any sim but I didn't know what woohooing was, so I just, while playing on a waterpark lot with a hot tub, that my sims were just having a lot of fun with strangers.
I’ve never heard of this? I wonder if the Harry Potter one is available for Download/purchase somewhere
Your comment reminded me of The Sims Online mods that were “x-rated” lol. Basically if you had the mod you could see what other Sims were wearing (n00d too) but without it you wouldn’t know. Yes I had it as a 10 year old. 😵💫 Just for a bit though to see what all the excitement was about. Dis Gust TING!
I distinctly remember having the Shrek one lmao. It was just a save with a family of green people
omg yes!! i remember how a salesperson was trying to push me a "Twilight EP" when I was asking for TS3 Late Night because its translation has the word "twilight" in it lmao
@@DoNotTouchElks the sims 3 late night! God i remember wanting to buy the cd for that
its sad how the sims cashgrabs back then were made by third party companies but now they’re being distributed straight from eaxis...
I wish they’d add “the sims” to origin just updated enough to be playable. I miss it so much.
Bestie just pirate it
@@jesaea I’ve tried. It only works for a few minutes and then just exits the game. Or it doesn’t ever work or it’s so tiny it’s unplayable.
@@amypatnaude88 Huh, I had no problem with the version I pirated. Perfectly large size, no crashing. Obviously I don't know what computer you're using or what version you downloaded, but there was a version on pirate bay that didn't even need to be mounted to an iso, there was just a trick with one of the files you had to do to get it to work right (which I can't remember, unfortunately)
@@amypatnaude88 I've pirated so many games and the sims def works normally lmao
@@amypatnaude88 where did u download it from?
Fun fact: selling content is technically against the terms-of-service agreement on at least the first three Sims games. The Sims Resource was actually breaking the license everyone agrees to when playing and making content for the game.
I dunno if this is different, but my understanding is that TSR has a paid subscription to the site for certain benefits, and the custom content is downloadable for free whether you have a subscription or not. Thus, it's not selling content. ⭐️
@@chimominino I *think* @thewilddeadhero meant back in the day. TSR pay-walled certain custom content. Not perks/ early access, full on certain bits of premium content. Not sure when the platform changed, I think after Sims 3? As TSR partnered with EA at that time to create a modding tool. But I'm not 100% on the ins and outs.
That's why there were two camps of creators, those who posted on TSR (for money) and those who posted on Modthesims (for free). I am going on my memory here, so the details might not be exact, but I believe people were calling to boycott the paywalls and support modthesims.
It's still technically against the TOU to indefinitely pay-wall custom content, but EA has never actually done anything to enforce this (that I'm aware of).
@@DigitalDassie I dont think EA had very strict modding rules back in the day because they technically didn't endorse modding. Even for Sims 3 where it was almost as easy as it is now
Only for Sims 4 did they start working with modders and acknowledging it as something that's okay
You mean T$R?
It's not illegal it just means you break your warnity and they aren't responsible for what you do
"If you put a monkey in a moving cable car with nothing but an unwired computer containing a software writing program, I'm sure he could do better" is how I would describe the absolute shirt that was My Wedding Stories. This is my new favourite phrase for describing all Sims 4 feck ups.
"entire simussy" made me choke kn my bagel
so you could say that that one U2 album that got downloaded on all of our apple libraries in the 2000’s is the music equivalent of shovelware
Yes!! lol I came here hoping someone had said it already. I don't even have an iPhone (nor did i) but I've heard soooo much about how annoying that album was lol
Happened to me back Then, I gave it a shot and absolutely lover the music so I was happy xD
I was making Sims 1 cc as a li'l 13 year old in 2000 and so there's a non-zero chance some of my stuff is on there which would be hilarious to me, ngl
I wish I could add this to my resume
I’m probably the odd one out in the Sims community because everyone else is like ‘give your money to support cc creators!’, but it makes me uncomfortable when people paywall their cc. I mean, allowing voluntary donations is one thing, but directly charging people for cc feels weird. In most other video game communities, requesting money for cc is seen as bad form. After all, the cc creators don’t own the game itself, and the origins of online modding community were open source and democratic. It was just people freely sharing what they could out of passion. This is like if there was suddenly a movement in the fan fiction community for writers to paywall their works. It feels like it goes against the spirit that brought communities like this alive in the first place.
Now that it turns out that a ton of these paywall Patreon cc creators were literally doxxing their patrons and harassing people’s workplaces, I’m even more put off.
yeah, i feel this- i don't mind early access, but overall i hate the monetization of mods and custom content in the gaming industry. thankfully it doesn't really seem to be catching on outside of small pockets
exactly my thoughts. i think that early access cc and donations are fine, cuz at least everyone gets the content for free at some point.
but yeah, i’ve never seen any other modding community in which content is locked behind a paywall the way that modding & cc in the sims is. like, i don’t think i’ve *ever* seen that with a game like terraria, because it’s just… not something you do.
Unpopular opinion, but this is why I don't think artists who paywall their fanart on patreon etc are justified in doing so either. I find the railing against fanfiction writers hypocritical, because fanartists have been doing the same shit for years.
“Shovelware” so basically all of EA’s games since they apparently don’t care about any of them or the players but they’ll still shove it all in your face 😭
I would say yes, in intention absolutely. In execution, and only through the hard work of outside creators and the community, the games become worth something. But they inadvertently profit from other creatives’ labor by doing so.
I would say the wedding pack LMAO
Yes. All of the yes.
@@katieweaver2856 oh no definitely I 100% agree with you. My heart aches for all of the hardworking people within the company. Their efforts are certainly soiled by EA’s actions and overall attitude :< and of course the community and content creators who really make everything worthwhile!

@@ellislily Nah that's malware
I remember Sims 2 magazines where they included a CD with free stuff, that was also definitely stolen!
I had a program for The Sims 2 when I was a kid, which was promoted as like, a "create your own content for The Sims 2!" program. It was basically a program where it would give you a few stock items, and you could ajust them with sliders, and I think add a few items onto it (like using a slider to make the hair longer, and then adding bunny ears). The things you could make were fucking ugly, and when it was actually put in the game, it would be buggy as hell. Like I remember the hair would be floating an entire head above the sim.
It was an awful program, definitely made just to profit from the popularity of The Sims 2. I returned it the day after I bought it, and while I do think it was the ethically right thing to do, and also I was a kid, so any amount of money was a lot to me, sometimes I think it could've been fun to keep it, just for the oddity of it. I don't remember what it was called, I've tried to find it before, but I only ever get That's Life. If anyone else remember this or had it, it could be fun to hear.
I have it too and I found it. It's called "Style & Fashion - Das Toolpack für Die Sims 2" in German. I don't know if it has been published in other countries too.
Yeah I think I had something similar in nz. I only remember making patterns that you could apply to existing clothes/furniture and then install into to game. It was super buggy and the stuff you created looked real bad in game so I hardly used it.
@@MajaCiant I don't know if that was the one I had. The box I had looked very different, but the content could be the same 🤷♀️
I live in Denmark, so it's not too crazy to think it may have been the same, just slightly differently packaged.

Such a disaster, what a catastrophe?! 😂

I wanted this so bad as a kid. We had internet because my dad worked at the local cable company, but most internet was too slow for downloading a bunch of cc back then. Plus everyone was kind of scared of downloading things off the internet.
I love these documentary-style videos! I live in the UK but I’ve never heard of this ‘expansion pack’
Not you putting your entire SIMUSSY into it babe 😭😭😭😂
What's wild. My mom purchased this from a thrift store for me. I had no idea what I was playing lol
That Jojo Siwa ‘well if you yell at me I’m gonna cry’ moment will forever be iconic.
does that make every sims 4 expansion pack shovelware by definition
Sims 3s store content as a total is worth over $14,000 to buy everything "Sims 4 bad because kits" literally ignoring the fact sims 3 is over 100 times more expensive lol
@@purplevoncreep9920 But the Sims 3 had so much base game content that you didn't have to buy any expansions at all and still had an enjoyable experience. The Sims 4 is a less enjoyable game even with several packs installed.
That being said, the store was a cash grab and so are the buggy packs and kits they keep releasing
@@hellformichelle the term cash brag is so overused its unreal, every expansion is made with the intention of making money regardless of how much you liked it thats game development lol
@@hellformichelle Are you kidding? The Sims 3 base game had the content level equivalent of a Sims 4 game pack
@@purplevoncreep9920 I actually don’t think it’s actually 100x more expensive. Maybe 25x if we include sims 3 store (which yes is ridiculous). I dont have all the sims 4 packs but have spent about $716 on sims 4 through the origin store. I will say, though, that sims 3 store aside (which is a crazy thing to include imo but it didn’t affect me much with jealousy), with just the expansion and stuff packs, sims 3 had wayyyy more content for similar price points. Also why sims 3 runs poorly because it’s just so much content.
(I am an obsessed person who loves all the sims games, though.)
I don't know when it happened but you have become one of my FAVORITE creators. Thank you for putting out so much content and making my day a little better.
i feel funny watching this because i have pirated all my sims games since 2012
i only recently legally purchased my first copy of the sims in a sale for like 5 USD
(t'was but a symbolic gesture, for i am still playing the pirated version with all dlcs, with no forethought of ever stopping my decade-long sinful actions...)
hell yeah LGR shoutout, Clint's the goat man
“I put my whole SIMUSSY into that and-“ my first time hearing that joke to be used with the Sims lmao 😂
Honestly I didn't start playing the sims until about 2 or 3 years ago and have only ever played the sims4 so it's really interesting to me to hear about all of the history behind the franchise like this
Ive just lost 13 sims in a revolution so this is a nice break from chaos x

Plumbella do you think you can make a video about the recent scandal that happened in the mods community? About how some creators still keep their content behind a paywall for months on end when it violates ea tou which stipulates content have to be released for free after 2-3weeks or so of being in early access. Simmer Erin covered it but none of the other creators do and I wonder why it’s super important for people to know especially that some of those creators were caught doxxing their patrons.
that's such a bullshit rule. ea don't release their stuff for free after a couple weeks, and their prices are a lot more than a creator's patreon. if cc creators are making their own meshes, textures, etc. it should be their choice how they monetize it. can you explain the reasoning behind this rule?
sorry i got a bit heated 😅 to be clear i'm mad at EA not you lol
@@mavymagdowney9798 well to be fair if you make a product and people are using it to make or showcase their art are they profiting off of you or you of them ? If you’re not making money over it ? That’s what people don’t get at the end of the day the sims isn’t your platform. You have the right to do things for you in your own game but to use the game to make your money and you’re not giving ea a cut ? It’s actually a given that ea isn’t suing all of them tbh. The fact that ea allow the creators to keep the cut they make and to release it to the public for us to have it for free sounds like a lot of compromising to me.
@@mavymagdowney9798 im not mad at you either hopefully my explanation was clear but at the end of the day everyone is using capitalism in one way or another to their advantage and some people are trying to hide it and be greedy and it shows.
@@itsbrooklynbabyyy thanks for explaining :]
I saw it in a store here in Autralia, it didn't get here until Sims2 was already out so I was instantly suspicious of it.
I was wondering if you could show us a current household or something? Love your funny commentary and challanges but it's be refreshing to see something like that again.
Scammed with spice is my new favourite quote
The fact that I keep hearing the name as “that slag” and “that slag 2” feels very on brand for your channel somehow
Love these "History Of" videos!! keep them coming!!
Pre-installed software a user may not want is generally considered bloatware, not shovelware. Shovelware is all about selling in budget bins--to be easy to buy. Bloatware is about being inconvenient/difficult to *remove.*
Though I will also say, Edge is actually just a technically superior browser based on Chrome (which has ironically become bloated adware). I use Firefox, but Edge is my second choice even if MS is a pain about it.
Halfway through watching this video my lunar isle package arrived and now im sat here, watching the rest of the video in my new jumper with a lovely cup of tea in one of dadbella's mugs. Cozy is the word here.
Thank you Jesse!! I bloody love ya hen
I love going into this video fully knowing this is Plumbella’s #1 video 😂 so brave of her to revisit in this storytelling form
I've still got a bit of nostalgia for these sorts of shovelware compilations of custom content for big games stolen from fan sites. Back when I was a kid with limited or no internet, it was the only way to get custom levels or items for games. I remember a friend had bought a disk with thousands of Doom and Duke Nukem levels, all just thrown onto a disk with no organization or logic to what was included, and we'd spent ages just playing them at random.
Me too. I picked up stuff from all over the place in the 90s, first on floppies then CD compilations. Things were much more localised. You can have something like this "That's Life" pack in Europe without US players even been aware of it, because there just wasn't the same thing of being constantly online.
"Did you see what I did there? It's a scam."
That was my favourite advert.
I remember seeing it in the shops and wanting it so bad, but we were super poor and it was a big deal we even had the first Sims and use of my mum's then boyfriends PC.
I wish there was an official way to play the original and its expansions as there's something about the OG Sims that just exudes this wonderful charm and nostalgia.
Your description of having the family computer and no internet connection and thinking you can suss it out takes me back 😂😂😂 I’m 28 now with 3 younger sisters and we got our first family computer in 1997 and we had that same on for YEARS and I always thought I could be the one to suss this thing out but nope 😂😂😂😂😂
Not to revive the beef simmers used to have with T$R, but allpaysitesmustbedestroyed
used to? i've seen it alive and well in some circles
whenever i hear of stuff like this i think about that illegal nintendo ds sd card that had hundreds of games in one and you could play so many „for free“ and you could just buy it like not many were really aware it was basically illegal
I downloaded sooooo many items from the web back before Sims 2 came out. I'm pretty sure it was from TSR and 7 Deadly Sims. I had a cake that would fill the motives of everyone in the house anytime it was eaten, so I'd assign a child to constantly eat cake in a locked room then play without any challenge 😂
on the topic of illegal sims expansions i vividly remember seeing an image of a bootleg sims 4 expansion that used someones ever after high x danganronpa crossover fanart as the cover art. i want to know so desperately what comes with that. its probably just like stolen princess-themed cc but still
I had like 2 of these for sims 2 as well as borrowed one from a classmate in middle school that was themed around Harry Potter but came with Charmed and also adult mods for some reason. The cc quality on all 3 was kinda meh quality, I found better stuff when I got on the internet later on and found sims CC sites.
that "do you see what i did there" advert aint stop me from doing shit!! 🤣
AAAAH so excited for the iceberg video
There is a Sims CC creator who hides stolen CC behind a paywall though!
do you know who it is? i keep seeing posts ab it from cc creators on tumblr but nobody says who! i wanna know so i don’t accidentally download from them
@@servetica Bergdorfverse, Cowbuild, Hermajestybuilds, Anto, Hel-Studio, or Busra TSR and some of them leak your info to doxxers. Be safe and don't pay for cc.
id like to know who it is too, if you know
@@servetica I believe it may be LeoSims but there are quite a few that have been accused of stealing meshes from other CC creators and SecondLife. Apparently Cowbuild has been stealing meshes from furniture designers as well. There’s quite a few that are now mixed up in the Patreon doxxing scandal.
@@Michelle-yi1gh I've noticed a bunch of people guilty of this. But I also suspect LeoSims, as I've noticed certain posts disappear. I suspect because the original creator contacted them about it. I don't have any proof beyond my own observation and conjecture though. There used to be a baby shower set that's disappeared...
Another dug out of the memory bank ! Thank you !
But while I was trying to find some gameplays of the game , just to do a little reminiscing , I think I know why it wasn't working for you . I came across someone saying that , " The program checks for the presence of 'The Sims 2' . If the game is not present then that is as far as you go " !

I remember seeing That's Life 2 a lot in flea markets (I live in Europe as well) when I was around 6, Sims 2 had already come out some time ago so there was a lot of expansion packs of Sims 1 being sold for dirt cheap. I thought it was a Sims 2 EP 🤦♂
I love your content, but this kind of video is truly the best for me !!

Please Plumbella I'm trying to do revision and you make a Sims video 😭😭😭 Now I wanna play the Simsss
lol me too
Sooo not that it takes a lot of detective work to figure out that the anonymous adverti-- *review* at 13:35 isn't legit, but I got curious and looked into it.
That random P> in the review caught my eye. I assumed right off the bat that this was an html paragraph tag that got caught in a copy-paste. I went to see if I could find phrases from this in any kind of marketing copy or on the box, but I couldn't.
But I *did* find the developer's website from the boxart on Moby Games. I took a dive with the wayback and I found a couple of their German announcement posts about the game (and the linked X-Media is a German company, so that explains why it was mostly found in Europe. Any of their English seems to be machine translated, so no wonder they couldn't go through the motions to establish much reach internationally).
Not only does this review read with a very similar voice as the back of the English box, but their German advertising also emphasizing this idea of working hard to earn your items/money.
Their site didn't last much longer after release. There was a brief period where it was replaced by the text of a German law (RVG) about lawyers' fees, but I'm not sure if that's related to any kind of legal repurcussions or just a fun coincidence from someone buying the domain.
I couldn't find anything that more closely matched the text of this review. But I did find users on their site complaining that it didn't work lol. And maybe unofficial add-ons for other games?
I am so excited for this iceberg!!
Specifically, all that pre-downloaded stuff would be *bloatware,* not shovelware. As far as I'm aware, they're distinct terms (although they very much can overlap).
But yeah. Kinda fuckin wild they got away with blatant violations of copyright law like this.
thank you for existing lol you have alway made day 💗💗
Have you considered doing a lore video on Morcucorp? Morcubus and his corporation was a major bad guy in my sims agents and they are brought up in bios of other sim main games
I have this vivid memory of this website back in the oughts that I downloaded custom content from. I want to say it was something like Sleepy Hollow sims. They had midi music that played on the website, it might have been Grim Grinning Ghosts from the Haunted Mansion. They had really beautiful goth CC, a lot of it reproduced from movies or named after things from movies. Does anyone else remember that? Does anyone still have that CC that could do a video on it? Or just on OLD CC in general?
Plumbella please talk about the drama with CC creators sharing their Patrons personal information my brain is too smooth to read through it all
I've been playing the Sims since the first game and I never heard of or saw the That's Life packs anywhere. Granted I didn't actually know that The Sims had expansion packs until well after The Sims 2 came out at which point my Mum didn't want to get them for me as she thought it was making you buy the whole game over again, she didn't quite understand that it was adding extra content. It was hard enough to get The SIms 2 as a gift (and I didn't get pocket money so there was no ability to save up to get it myself). There was one singular game shop in my home town and it mostly sold stuff for consoles. Like we bought our CDi Player games there back in the 90s (Legend of Zelda: Wand of Gamelon is THE BEST and ONLY VALID Legend of Zelda game in the franchise because you actually play as Zelda not that wimpy whiny Link).
I also did have my own computer, built it myself! The family got to use it, but it was very much mine. All the bits I could get in purple were purple (or beige and purple because it was the 90s when I built it so...). And we did have dial up but most of my time online was spent on Neopets so didn't really know there were forums for Sims stuff. It was still a much simpler time though.
I remember downloading content for The Sims from every one of those sites mentioned. Oh the nostalgia 🤩
That intro with the rolling clouds really gave me The Ring tape vibes lmao I was sitting here like 😳
