Did The EDMONTON OILERS Win Their Stanley Cups Thanks To DRUGS?

  • 1986 would forever change the Oiler's Dynasty. After Steve Smith's own goal during the final play off game against Calgary, a scathing article in Sports Illustrated would make the team look like a bunch of drunk and high frat boys who were just really good on the ice. Of course the Oilers denied the rumours and the truth in somewhere in the middle of both sides.

    What are your thoughts on the 1980's Oilers? Do you think their drug problem contributed to their wins or losses? Let me know in the comments below

    • @JOBdOut
      @JOBdOut Рік тому +1

      Definitely contributed to their wins. Players lose when they're tired or hurt.. how can they be tired high on coke? How can they feel hurt if they've drunk themselves numb?

    Don’t have to know much to know the player in the bathroom at the beginning was Taylor Hall. My uncle knows a few paramedics in Edmonton and he said they were instructed by the team that if they see Taylor on the street drunk and/or high to pick him up, call Oilers staff, and to take him home. Hall also got Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Lance Bouma hooked on cocaine. The three of them were benched one game by Bob Hartley after they came back from partying with Hall

      Sounds about right if the rumours are true. We weren’t into naming names; have to avoid those slander lawsuits on our end.

    Reminds me a lot of the Dallas Cowboys of 90's...sounds Messier and Fuhr would feel out of place partying with the likes Michael Irivn ,Leon Lett and Erik Williams

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada  Рік тому

      The 80’s oilers knew how to party. I’m sure there are other teams that could have out partied them but that’s more on the city at the time than anything. I’m sure Dallas in the ‘90s had a bit more of a night life.

    Lived in a high rise tower downtown in what is now "The Ice District" for 20 years. One of the caretakers was a guy who once worked at Northlands and was on a first name basis with many of the Oilers from that era.
    He never told me any of this but the stories he did tell me leave no doubt in my mind that every word of this is true.

    • @DiveInCanada

      I bet he had a few real good party stories. If any come to mind, make sure to share!

      @@DiveInCanada The stuff about Grant Fuhr is pretty well known though perhaps not so much in the day. Ditto Dave Hunter.
      MacTavish's past was no secret when he got here and I heard from an auto mechanic friend of mine who grew up in St. Albert playing hockey with Mark Messier that he could be a first rate A-hole by times and cared for little beyond himself.
      My caretaker friend told me lots of stories while keeping his sense of discretion intact but from the details, you could definitely piece stuff together.
      The bottom line is that there was an awful lot about those guys in those days; including a certain kid from Brantford, that did NOT fit in with this good-Canadian-kids, boys-on-the-bus persona AT ALL, and the club went to great lengths and considerable expense to hush it up.
      BTW, the identity of the person in the 2013 bar incident is also pretty well known and my friend; who still knows people connected with the Oilers, said that his move out of town had little to do with improving the team and a whole lot to do with keeping him from getting killed and removing a malignant tumor from the dressing room.

      I wouldn’t doubt it. The player I encountered hasn’t stopped his drug habits to this day. It’s wild that he can do that and still play at the level he’s at.
      Great stories. I’m going to go more into Gretzky’s skeletons in his closet so stay tuned. Janet’s gambling ring bust goes into some dark places.

    Unfortunately (and you know this to be true based on my previous profession) I can confirm the 2013 story about T- was more common than you think and that friend would not have been the first to catch him in the act
