As a childhood Jets fan who hated the move to Phoenix, I actually hope they win that land auction and score an expansion team. A good location and a fully handpicked roster as opposed to the handcuffs of a half dozen retired-player-contracts and scraps could reignite the idea of hockey gaining popularity again.
When my job involved calling Americans I spoke to quite a few Phx folk - the general consensus was the same - there was a loyal fanbase for hockey - but people were not willing to travel to the arena. The move to Glendale is what really put the team on life support as hockey fans and snowbirds were more often in the Scottsdale/Tempe/Mesa area. They weren't willing to go across town.
Travel is a bit of a misnomer, I presume this actually refers to the hassle of traffic jams, finding parking, and paying for it. I am a staunch driver who avoids transit at all costs, but even I will take the LRT to a football or hockey game rather than have to face all that.
Words cannot express what a shitshow it is to get anywhere near Glendale when a big event is going on. I caught WAY more games at Mullett because it was a 15 minute train ride that cost 4 bucks from the house. Glendale was a three hour round trip through some of the crappiest places to drive in Phoenix. I'm sure Albertans will laugh abut that when they're driving in snow and ice for 2 or 3 hours each way, but stop and think for a minute. What the fuck else you gonna do in the winter there? Skiing or sledding? EVERYTHING is on the table here in Arizona, even skiing! We have 10,000 ft + peaks in the north. All the outdoor sports are on the table in the vally when its 65 in the day and 45 at night. Being.a Wings fan, it was compelling enough for me to go and root my team to an inevitable loss (the Yotes have had the Wings' number forever!) but with a mediocre team most seasons, it was hard to care otherwise. It kind of sucks, because it looks like they've started to put the pieces together to have a competitive team in a year or two and they're going to be gone. Forgive any typos, I'm getting over an eye infection and the screen is a little fuzzy.
I feel bad for the fans of the Coyotes now that they are moving. Hopefully they can look back fondly at the last 28 years despite the poor on-ice performance. It was more than others got, but that's not much comfort for fans I suppose. Also for the love of $&@-$+$ can the NHL please tone down the gambling ads? Thank you.
Give it 5 years and I bet they will be back. Bettman is determined to make this work. The NHL is going all in on this betting BS. It’s so stupid to see considering their past stance.
I was going to bitch that Bobby Orr isn't on your short list of all time hockey greats but by the time I scrolled to the comments section and started typing you hooked me with the rest of the video, so never mind! Great research as always. You can see the same disconnect between talent on the field and talent behind the bench in the CFL also. Ron Lancaster may be an exception, in his time in Edmonton he never missed the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, made it to the cup twice, and won once. May not seem great, but compare to record-breaking Eskimos quarterback Matt Dunnigan who coached exactly one season. Lancaster and Dunnigan both had really successful careers as colour commentators on television broadcasts and that appeared to be where their strengths were after playing.
We knew that Venn diagram was going to cause some fights, but it’s good for engagement ;P. Thanks! Interesting correlation with the CFL. That has the chance to be a future video.
The video is about the Rick ricochet and Wayne Gretzky gambling scandal while they worked for the coyotes. Sounds like you didn’t even bother to watch before commenting.
@@DiveInCanada I watched the whole video. The video was about the gambling scandal which took place before and during their employment with the Coyotes. The team had nothing to do with it and they weren't even called the Arizona Coyotes when this happened. It's clickbait.
What does the change from Phoenix to Arizona have to do with this being click bait? You want me to use out of date language for who's benefit? So you can comment below, 'Wow accurate title. So good."? You watched the whole video, so you know that at the end, I talk about the Coyotes moving to Utah. It's almost as if the francise 'ran out of luck'. English is funny. You can use allusions and metaphors, maybe you'll come around to that one day. The video starts on the Tocchet/Gretzky gambling scandal that marred the Coyotes for a few decades, and ends with a breakdown about how the franchise ran out of luck and good will. How would you like me to title that? "Matthew Jacobson's approved title for a video about the PHOENIX COYOTES NOT ARIZONA scandal THAT HAPPENED BEFORE BUT THEN ALSO DURING THE TIME WITH THE COYOTES". Wow. Rolls off the tongue. If you don't like the video or title, the dislike button’s there. Don't let the door hit your back on the way out.

Seems like every team needs that attention. Hopefully they can get some good staff at Utah.

Makes sense. It's why Edmonton moved their arena downtown, and why we had a subway stop at the original arena.

The record shows that the nhl in AZ never worked, but it might of if they stayed in Canada.
Goalies make the best coaches
They get to survey the players for their career. Makes sense.
$25,000 worth of Rolex watches?
Who needs two watches?!?
He have been selling that stuff to help launder the money.
That’s was just the ones found. Hey, even two Rolex’s for a blue collar guy is a lot.
