this works really well, also if youre fairly early in the sculpt you can also hold R, set your voxel size to something reasonable small, then release, then ctrl + R to apply it and that also gets rid of the overlapping stuff.

I feel like I just levelled up tenfold as a sculptor in Blender with this. It's so obvious but with the layout of Blender's sculpt tools, the functionality often feels worlds apart from the modelling side of things, thanks for the tip
Thanks so much! This was very helpful. And I'm just gonna leave this here for anyone who encounters my problem: A few times for some reason the non-manifold option wouldn't work. So instead I used the 'linked' thing. I clicked on the wireframe in edit mode (you can click anywhere) and if you hit 'L' it shows all the vertices that are linked together. I noticed there was a part that wasn't connected with the rest of the sculpt so I hit ctr+i to invert it and then I deleted the disconnected part. That worked for me!
Remeshing alters your mesh. As long as your mesh is as rough as in the example that would work too. But if you have a lot of detail work done already you might lose it unless you remesh in an obscene high density.
I usually use "ctrl + " or "ctrl - " for boolean, which is more convenient. You just need to enable the "bool tool" addon, and there will be no extra topology inside the mesh.

Just an update! i tried this just now and it turns out, if you have the latest updated version of blender, it already removes the vertices for you when you combine the objects so it blends seamlessly !! this tutorial was amazing! EDIT THO: the line is still visible when you're sculpting over it, i dont know how to fix that but if you can make an updated tutorial that would be great!
I've been tracing over the remaining "seam" lightly with a draw brush in Dyntopo mode at a similar resolution to the existing mesh, and then smoothing with dyno off. It's not perfect, but it improves on the topology the boolean leaves behind.
This probably just saved me 8 hours of work on my current project alone. Words can't describe how grateful I am, thank you.

I don't get it. Why don't you use Bool Tool addon? You can activate it natively in Blender.
