Oh you must be kidding. We have no business committing treason against the crown! The taxes aren't nearly as bad as you rebels claim. They don't even really enforce the Stamp Act!!
No way! Stick with England. We're stronger together. Just give it another few years - the Whigs will return to their roots under Charles James Fox and send the Tories packing and you'll see a positive change.
This is literally the most wholesome channel on UA-cam. Don't be discouraged by the vocal crazy minority. It's human nature, man. 99% of us silently enjoy your videos, because we like history, food, craftsmanship...etc..
As someone who just started watching this channel recently, it feels like walking into a classroom while the rest of the class is getting yelled at 😂😂😂
How unfortunate. This man is on the verge of tears, I’ve seen dozens of his videos and not once has he shown any propensity towards politics. He does show a genuine enthusiasm for educating people about history, thank you for that sir!
Even though this is an older video, to the viewers that matter you most certainly don't have to explain yourself... I come here to learn, smile and above all chill.
@@chrishayes5755 And do we have to be critical of which higher power someone might have had faith in when using the loose term "God"? As a Buddhist, I always saw it as an abbreviation for the word "good"........and there should be criticism to things good? Confucius confusing. :~\
I already left a comment, but at the end of the episode I just want to note this: John, you are a top tier, amazing person. Keep doing what you do, my guy

@@xpndblhero5170 There's a single word for that: patriot. There were revolutions all through history, but "patriotism" was brought back from Rome to serve the colonial cause, and we were laughed at for the word because the British didn't see the colonies as anyone's homeland. If you weren't a loyalist, you were a rebel without a home. So, all those once-loyal Englishmen living in the colonies said America was their home and started calling themselves loyal to their shared land. Funny enough, that appealed to some French and Dutch colonists in the Americas, too. Patriots.
So I saw a meme that used this video’s thumbnail. Led me to the channel. That led me to Civil War Digital Digest. That led to me getting back into reenacting after 15 years out of it all and it’s brought so much happiness into my life, and now I’m pursuing a masters degree in history. Thank you for getting frustrated, it’s changed my life
Keep the history coming because if people don't know history they are doomed to repeat it. Of course you bring us the parts of history we enjoy purposefully repeating.
TheManlyManMan he not a fence sitter. He is someone who sees that political engagement is not something that should consume every aspect of life. Let us just enjoy our 18rh century potted meats & ale and let the 21st century be a distant dull roar...0
Colonial cooking and their techniques have always been interesting to me and you do an awesome job with your demonstrations. I watch your channel to get away from modern day lunacy. Stay above it Jon and keep up the great work.
2021 checking in. It makes me sad that this genuine, honest man that literally wants nothing more than to teach people about history has to deal with this nonsense. It's disgusting and reprehensible, anyone that contributed to him having to make this video should be ashamed of themselves. I love your videos and i know it's 4 years later but I'm still angry this video had to exist at some point. At all. Ever.
2022 Checking in. It is awful that politics has consumed everything and that decision has consumed everything. Can we just discuss cooking without the politics, that would be lovely.
2022. Jon was talking about how upset he was that he had to make this video. I had to scroll back to find the proper date, but I couldn't find the video before it that was so offensive. Then watching and he says it is the orange fool dessert that drove people into a rage. I'm glad I stay out of politics.
You’re right, in fact I’d go so far as to say that the last 4 years have gotten worse unfortunately. And I don’t think it’s gonna get better unless we figure out a way to split up the country into two different governments.
Genuinely thought he was talking about the last week too. It's sad how cancel culture has made its way into _our_ history. Not mine, not yours. _Our_ history, as human beings.
It saddens me to agree. I thought this was from last week before realizing it was 3 years ago. I am glad he doesn't get political, I come here to get the hell away from politics.
This man looks genuinely devastated that people would hijack his good works to make political statements of their own. I'm so sorry Jon. Stay committed
@Adrian Heath We don't know John's political opinions. We can guess, but we don't know. He hopes we never do know, and what's more, that we have the courtesy to never ask.
@Galactus TM When the willful cowardice of the conservative right ends so will the actions of the far left shortly after. Until then, get used to the insanity that the far left will drag us all into because nobody from the sane majority is willing to step up and do anything about it.
The funny part is, the allusion never even dawned on me until the comments came. All I could think of was actually trying to replicate the dessert. Ignore the haters because your channel is awesome! For me, it's a happy place to go especially during these doomsday times.
It did occur to me, so I didn't watch the video when it first came out. I avoided it cus there is waaaay more to my life then politics and I'm much too busy to be bombarded with that stuff. I never even realised it wasn't supposed to be political. Nonetheless I'd never dream of putting anything political on hete
I had to watch this for over thirty seconds after he mentioned the dish involved before I realized what the problem had been and I went "Ohhhh...", and also, "Yep, people are that stupid."
@@Stettafire You're probably less likely to make the connection if you already knew of the once-popular confection known as a "fool.". (Me, I remember gooseberry fool from Terry Pratchett's Discworld books.)
Madz DK , such negative comments are not helping in today's troubled world. Wars were waged so people could say, freely, what they wanted. But respect of others was also taught way back when. As for me,I found it comical enough to take some misery out of what is happening all around.

Your channel is a place of refuge for me to go so I can stay away from the bombardment of politics we are exposed to daily. I haven’t yet seen the episode to which you refer, but I absolutely believe there was no political intent, and I thank you for what you do.
Well said. I have only been here for about a year. It is an amazing place. I can come here to escape and learn about things that I truly care about and enjoy. I love the live videos and the readings of classic book and short stories, as well.

Five years later... I have been watching this channel for years and never once has it leaned left or right or made one political statement involving modern day politics.
Indeed. It's just been quality content around cooking and culture of that time period, that's it! Just people who are super into history and living it!
Just found your channel recently and I appreciate that I can comfortably watch your channel without worrying about what my four year old might see or hear, but also something I can gladly share with my parents and enjoy with them as well. You are spot on with the comment about daily and personal interactions being way more important than the things that many loud voices try to claim are important but have little to do with most people. Thanks, Jon, for the great family content and really cool look into history!
I'm from Asia and I've learnt so much about your culture and am so amazed there are people who'd cultivate and protect history by living it. I just want to say your channel has one of the purest and most passionate content on it, please keep doing what you do. I'll always support you for what you're doing.

?!? you know that historians are always comparing that which was to that which is, right? The difference between now and then is the interesting part. If everyhting had been like it is now, learning about a previous period would be a pretty dull affair, huh? I really like this channel and I can see why they wanna avoid the topic.... because the US populus is so divided and radical in that division... but is it healthy to learn about history and don't take away things you can compare to your time? Probably not. As they say, if you don't learn from history you're doomed to repeat it.
Barbarus Bloodshed I agree that a big part of history, especially US history, is important in politics, but he does cooking and other miscellaneous things that have nothing to do with modern politics.
Chris Pacheco Politics? Important? It’s a result of people being bored. Most people in developed countries no longer have to fight to survive, we no longer have to conquer/defend against enemy people (like the ancient world). So our fighting energy needs to be taken out on something like politics because we have nothing better to do. It’s an unimportant game that we can relieve our no longer necessary desire to fight or conquer. It just seems like that sometimes!
@@nicb4589 then what about the other urge humans have, to make friends, find like-minded partners and form groups? We are a social species and form groups. These groups grew over time. Now we are basically one large group spread over the globe. You cannot manage groups of large sizes only with personal interactions, you have to have a dome of rules that sits on top of that. That's what politics is. Just another clever invention of ours. One that allows us to form ever-larger groups without falling into chaos. So the reason behind politics being the way they are is a very natural, instinctive one. BTW, sadly people everywhere still have to "fight to survive", unless they were born 100% healthy and very rich.
I have just recently found this channel by way of the Townsend's online shop, and I have to say this channel hosts some of the most genuinely enjoyable content I've seen on any platform. I am thrilled time after time to see such dedication to our nation's history and to the colonial period. Thank you for everything you do and have done since this video was released.
Dear Jon, I'm writing you from across the pond, from a small (albeit 1100 years old) town in the foothills of the Thuringian Forest, right in the middle of Germany. Your channel is interesting, entertaining and you're doing a great job letting us glimpse into the past. You clearly love what you do! If I'm coming home from a particularly busy day in the office, I sometimes sit down and watch some episodes while drinking a cup of tea and munching some unhealthy cookies. Why your channel? Because I like the subject, I like cooking, history and your gorgeous kitchen utensils. And sometimes I'm amazed to see that "you over the pond" cook something my grandmother - who was born in 1923 and passed away 3 years ago - used to cook well into the 21st century. She would have loved your channel, even without understanding a single word. So let me say this to you: I've never seen or heard anything of ill intent from your side and I can tell you, that you are a "guter Kerl", a good and honest guy, who brings some enjoyment to his viewers. Stay as you are, I'm very sure that the vast majority of your viewers see you in the same way as I do. Best wishes! - Christopher

Just dropping back in again to say I love your topics/information/channel. Have shared your videos with several family members and friends, and incorporated some into play-lists and bookmarks. Thank you so much!!
I LOVE this channel! I thoroughly enjoy every episode I watch and I am enthralled with ALL the historical education you share with we the viewers. I have already learned so much more about "OUR" history than I ever learned in school, and I especially love the cooking episodes that are not only so insightful about bread made the "Old Way", but the history behind making those breads and I look forward to trying those ways myself. I am deeply troubled by and ashamed for those who feel they must bring their political angst to this channel. I wholeheartedly thank you sir, for ALL the wonderful knowledge you do your best to pass on to us. May you be richly blessed a hundred fold.

I agree, his channel is so awesome. I've learned lots about historical cooking and living. It's different from any other YT channel. It never gets political, that makes it wonderful.
You misunderstand. I down voted the two main idiots politicizing this; I am not apologizing for them; and I was not specifically referring to this thread but rather was making a general comment about the politicization of non political things.
This feels like when your parents yell at you and say "we were just trying to do something fun for you guys and you had to ruin it" legit just made me feel sad lol
@Cactus Jack It is sometimes (incorrectly) used as a full stop in a way. In this instance, however, it most likely means a light chuckle after telling a jokey story like the OP did. Writing "haha" or something like that wouldn't work as well, in my opinion.
"bombarded with politics - highly divisive politics." - 5 years later here we are, still..and getting worse... worldwide craziness. Your channel really gives some release from that. Thank you! :)

Mr. Rogers was very political, trying to normalize the handicapped and soaking his feet in a pool with a black neighbor when the South was banning them from pools.
As a retired history teacher, I get tired of history being viewed through the lens of today's politics as well as has happened here everything has to do with today's politics.
Yup - that's presentism and sadly there are some historians who cave in to it. I'm a medievalist historian fighting to wrest the history of the medieval female mystics back from the feminists who have put a very popular, modern spin on medieval behavior as if medieval people shared our modern-day code of ethics. Nothing can be more irritating - not to mention ignorant.
Well, this dessert and it's name actually makes a lot of sense in Historical Political sense !! ... The house of Orange is the Royal family of the Netherlands, and mocking royalty after the Revolutionary war (or Dutch people clinging to Royalty instead of Republic Liberty) might make a lot of sense here. Especially if you take into account that the Netherlands and the USA do share quite a bit of History together.
I'm a history teacher now and working on my masters. Reading history and historiography there's a place for judging history as tradionalist or revisionist or post revisionist however what we see today is "revisionism" the literal changing of history to meet modern political agendas. We see it everywhere in education today. Teaching intelligent design next to evolution...saying the civil war was caused by anything other than slavery...its been done for years but now in the age of "information" its coming home to roost.
History ... and science ... and humor ... and religion ... and sports ... and everything else! There are too many people who seem unable to look at any Rorschach pattern without seeing the current US president.

I just started watching and sub'd not too long ago, enjoying everything am learning and just honestly enjoying it completely. From what I have seen I would of never even thought that was the point. I have seen some great advice and a real love of history displayed by this channel and its guests. Everybody is treated with respect and just a well of information to share with each other on how things are and even how we can still use some of our history in today's world. I know this is an older video but just wanted to let out a comment that there are supporters out there. Keep the passion of history alive and keep doing what I am seeing so far, a true and honest approach to what our world before us went through.
This is a legitimate history teacher, he makes me think of every history teacher in college who was called out by someone for something they never tried to do, and every time they were legitimately hurt by their message being so horrifically perverted. They love history, they love going back, and having their old histories contaminated is incredibly painful for them.

Let's not mess up a nice living history impression/channel, people. This guy is knocking himself out to bring the 18th Century to life for us, and this is how we repay him.
The issue here is that he said “You must be a Democrat” and henceforth made this argument political and therefore clearly did not watch or understand this video. Mr Redpill over here is a troll, and there’s nothing more we should do.

@@EidolonSpecus No, there is a difference in making something political versus the intrinsic politics involved when it comes to discussing history or deciding to be a hermit etc. It becomes political when people bring arguments and discussion in an effort to sway political opinion or send a political message. So no not everything is political, otherwise you are arguing semantics which is not conducive to any real discussion. Just because you and some others see every little action as a political statement is the exact thing this video is about. Not everything is political, even if you get a glimmer of what you think someones values/morals happen to be does not mean they are being political or attempting to send a political message. Though it is inescapable to get away from those who will attack anything that seems to disagree with their politics thus forcing something to be political, that much is true. The fact that you feel the need to copy/paste this on so many comments, with some self reflection, should show you how you are so politically absorbed that it is YOU who is making everything political in YOUR mind. Maybe learn to take a step back every once in awhile, the average person is not political in nature and hardly ever wants or feels the need to get political in conversation.
As someone who just recently found this channel, this week in fact, I can honestly say that I have had these videos on a loop for the last three days just listening to the work and the recipes. I found the channel from the interest in the ships biscuit. I love what you are doing in this channel. What you said in this video from 5 years ago rings as true today as it did then. And as to the content contained within this video; with the same gusto as the time period itself, I tap my cane loudly upon the floor and cry out "here, here".

Thank you for this channel, John. One of my favourite book series growing up was the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and while that takes place in the late 19th century, it was my gateway into the America of the past, especially when it comes to learning about how farmers and pioneers lived. Your channel is like an oasis where I can learn about America without the political nonsense that permeates almost every bit of media coming out of the country. 4 years later and this is still super relevant. I watch videos in the morning while drinking my coffee and eating breakfast. And I have found the videos I watch really, really affect my mood for the day. Back during the election, the politics videos I was watching really depressed and angered me, and so that was my day at work. I've made a conscious effort to NOT watch stuff that upsets me in the morning anymore. John, your videos are some of the ones on UA-cam that I can watch that helps my mood out the rest of the day. Thank you for keeping it not political, and thank you SO much for being so upbeat and positive throughout. Your love of history shines through in every video you make, and it makes everything more interesting for your viewers.
History is actually politics, even if you go back to as much of the stone age as we know about. But that's beside the point, he talks about food and lifestyle in the most apolitical way possible without completely leaving out the history. Maybe you tube doesn't like us (the commenters) filling in some of the gaps . And it's history, there are always gaps.
@@alsaunders7805 "History is actually politics" No, by definition, history is the past. Sure, political motivations helped shape the world, but not all events that take place in human history are political.
There are morons out there who think that "everything is political". If i go out and paint a sunset for my own enjoyment, they will somehow attach political ideologies to it. It's honestly mind boggling. Give it a few years and you will not be able to take a piss without being accused of making some kind of political statement. And no, @al saunders, history is not politics. There is some politics in history. Significant difference.
Dear Sir, your chanel is one if of the best on youtube because it’s not political, because it’s clever, interesting, fascinating, creative, full of knowledge, respectful...etc all my best from France/Luxembourg
Love your channel. I enjoy learning about history and so often it is done with a broad brush because it is a very large subject to tackle. Having you and your team go in depth on the way people lived during the colonial and frontier eras is fantastic because so much of this is often overlooked. Keep doing what you are doing.
Too many people make things political. Your channel is NOT about politics. It's about food, and the evolution of food. You're safe, dude. Ignore the idiots.
What you do has inspired me in my own cooking. I love everything you do. I want my son to see this level of history, and to know how food has evolved in the US (as well as the struggles our country has seen in the last 200 years, and how we've progressed). I will say here and now ... I will add shaking your hand to my bucket list. And I hope my son will be able to shake your hand one day too. You are talented, your recipes and videos are amazing, and you cut the BS out of what most cooking channels do. You get to the point, you're articulate, and you make things fun. Keep on keeping on!
culture comes as a result of organized groups which by nature tend to have an agreed social contract by which they live (basically, culture inspires political ideas/movements and politics is just a means societies are organized) however, I think people easily forget the history that we all come from and the conversations we have about the here and now lose their meaning or are taken out of context. this channel performs a great service to us all about the everyday life of the founding of us and Canada. how people live form the ideas of the time and become abstracted into political structures and those ideas get carried across time as well as evolve as how people live evolve. so, history as it was is incredibly important and as the saying goes "everything is clear in hindsight" the simple everyday living of people of the past inspired and brought about the conversations of today. I just hope that we all learn more from those before us
I just came across your program on youtube and l love it. You have great recipes that was used back in history and we are able to use them now. History and great food recipes. Keep up the good work!!!
Somehow I missed this video when first released. Please know you are a true blessing! You are excellent at sharing your knowledge in such a wonderful manner. I have learned so much from you. Stay strong!!!
the only political message I've gotten is that we should break away from England and for us to start our own country.
I'm with you; care to partake in a tasty glass of orange fool while tossing crates of tea into Boston Harbor?
Oh you must be kidding. We have no business committing treason against the crown! The taxes aren't nearly as bad as you rebels claim. They don't even really enforce the Stamp Act!!
TEA BELONGS IN THE RIVER!!
Rebel against a democracy that provides lots of services?
No way! Stick with England. We're stronger together. Just give it another few years - the Whigs will return to their roots under Charles James Fox and send the Tories packing and you'll see a positive change.

"Politics" is everything that has to do with how groups of people work, the _polis._ Most things that have to do with the _polis_ (such as the Internet) are political; even our interpretations of the past. Even the act of rejecting the group and living a hermit life _is_ a political thing. That is inherent to how humanity works, at least since recorded History.
Saying that "it's not political" does not make it so; being in the public forum makes it relevant to the _polis._ For better or worse.

I only recently discovered this channel. I would describe myself as at best mildly interested in cooking and history, but I can't get enough of your content. I have learned incredibly much in a short time, you are an amazing educator and presenter. I think it is the passion and ART that go into this channel that touch me most of all. Mr. Rogers was very political, trying to normalize the handicapped and soaking his feet in a pool with a black neighbor when the South was banning them from pools.
As a retired history teacher, I get tired of history being viewed through the lens of today's politics as well as has happened here everything has to do with today's politics.
Well here and now is our day of reckoning!
I'm so glad y'all got through this foolishness and kept making your wonderful and informative videos. I truly enjoy your channel and would be willing to come up noth (I'm in southern Indiana) and learn and possibly live there. Y'all are amazing!!!

I’m baffled how people can get offended over the name of a dessert from the 18th century.
It is because context no longer matters.
Unfortunate thing about the internet, there're people who will use their anonymity as an excuse to let our any emotional truths they believe and no care for manners or respect.
They aren't very intelligent if that's their takeaway.
Granted people dont care about context anymore, BUT in the current climate it's very common for people to throw in little jabs like that just for the hell of it
Ah, you must never have met "people" before then.
Let's not mess up a nice living history impression/channel, people. This guy is knocking himself out to bring the 18th Century to life for us, and this is how we repay him.

@@JordanBeagle Are you saying what I think you're saying?
This. The din of everyone trying to voice their opinion all at once is kinda tiring.
"Politics" is literally everything that has to do with how groups of people work. Most things that have to do with the _polis_ (such as the Internet) are political; even our interpretations of the past. Even the act of rejecting the group and living a hermit life _is_ a political thing. That is inherent to how humanity works, at least since recorded History.
Saying that "it's not political" does not make it so; the internet makes it relevant to the _polis._
I've only just discovered your channel, so I'm behind here, but I love it. So fascinating as a lover of anything historical.

I'm a huge fan of Norwegian folk music and modern reinterpretations of them but the UA-cam comments on every single one of those music videos are always so full of hate that I feel sick. It's a shame that YT doesn't have a good comment rating system.

Thank you for this channel, John. History is actually politics, even if you go back to as much of the stone age as we know about. But that's beside the point, he talks about food and lifestyle in the most apolitical way possible without completely leaving out the history. *History*
culture comes as a result of organized groups which by nature tend to have an agreed social contract by which they live (basically, culture inspires political ideas/movements and politics is just a means societies are organized) however, I think people easily forget the history that we all come from and the conversations we have about the here and now lose their meaning or are taken out of context. this channel performs a great service to us all about the everyday life of the founding of us and Canada. how people live form the ideas of the time and become abstracted into political structures and those ideas get carried across time as well as evolve as how people live evolve. so, history as it was is incredibly important and as the saying goes "everything is clear in hindsight" the simple everyday living of people of the past inspired and brought about the conversations of today. I just hope that we all learn more from those before us
