- Greetings to all of you culture vultures and my fellow astronauts! It's here, perennially happy and everything is good, Byron Nominal Howitzer, your favorite Hollywood insider, talking about 3 Body Problem on Netflix, which is, I am sure, the best show ever made. Not ever made up until now- ever made ever. EVER. It is that good.

"3 Body Problem" better than "2 And a Half Men", maybe better than "Bodies", definetly worse than "12 Angry Men"
Slightly worse than 3 Men and a Baby then?
not quite as good as Aronofsky’s Pi
So this is the sequel to "2 and a half men" and the origin story of "12 angry men"? Or did I get it wrong? Should I watch them in release order, or plot order? Damn watching stuff requires a PhD, these days! Much effort.
...and that confirms what we all knew: 2001 is the greatest movie of all time.
I'm ignoring 10,000BC in my movie database. 2001 it is.
Just kidding it's really Citizen Kane and there have never been any movies made with names >Citizen Ka.
Look, one body, no problem, standard compact trunk and a shovel can handle that. 2 bodies, you better have at least a full size sedan. 3 bodies? You better have a good friend with a truck. If they're not such a good friend you could be looking a 4 body problem.
I'd rather watch that series.

Oh it does. They like to insert right-wing videos into my feed when I'm very, very, very clearly not that and spend most of my time on political left YT.
Could it be the Naz history documentaries doing it? No irony there though...that's just an outright correlation at this point, isn't it?
I watched one (ONE) TV movie on Pamela Smart this week because I was overwhelmed with choice on my Shield Pro and I decided to watch a trashy crime movie on YT at 1am instead and now half my home page is Hallmark movies and things from 8-11 years ago. They're punishing me on purpose.
@@taranullius9221 For me I had a bunch of old videos in history from 2015 and older that I assumed was deleted when I deleted all history long ago but it somehow reappeared and gave me weird suggestion for a long time. When I cleared that, it got a little bit better but I still get some right wingers and I think it only has to do with my location and time when I watch videos
This is the best thing I've watched since 3 body problem. Which is the last thing I watched before this.
The tone of this very video was what the show was missing.

Christopher Nolan not releasing a movie this year left me without something to watch that kinda has to do with science so I could feel smart about watching it while being mostly about loud noises, action, and awkward romance, and 3 Body Problem filled that void perfectly. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to huffing markers I stole from the local middle school.

This is certainly one of THE series review of all time
only two months ago I watched the ~30 episode version, even though I skipped through between episode 18 and 25 because it was dragging on, I did not expect that you could compress all the boring bits from 30 episodes in a show in the length of 8 episodes... The Netflix adaption is so stale that my eyes at times wanted to roll back into my head not having to endure these characters. I mean not all characters in the 30 episode Chinese version get the good writing, especially the detective but in the end and in the flashbacks and game scenes, I was at least experiencing the kind of dread you'd expect from story with this kind of existential threat and scope!
yes, a tv show featuring tik tok is peak existential dread.
The Tencent version suffers from the usual suspects of regional programming (though much less than its peers) and it punches really hard above its weight. It's frustrating because it feels like we're simply incapable of getting a good adaptation of this book due to its subject matter, dense subject matter and slow-burn pace. If American producers refuse to see the value in the show due to outside political drama, it's hopeless. There's some things I can even agree are interesting ideas for an adaptation but the complete removal of all mystery and all actual discussion of theory is unforgivable. It had to air on CCTV which was a blessing for its budget but a burden for the padded runtimes, heavier censoring and other typical Cdrama problems.
I don't think it quite replaces the book, but I adore the attention to detail and what they did to get the book to screen. I found the cinematography striking and I admire how hard they leaned into the slow-burn existential dread as this poor scientist gets gaslit by the universe itself. There's more possibility for other adaptations of the Dark Forest and Death's End and maybe they'll be decent, but none of the books captured my attention like TBP due to its historical fiction background and its exploration of generational trauma, and it feels like it'll be forever lost when it comes to screen.
That version did get a director's cut that cuts down the series to 26 episodes with slightly lesser censorship, I've heard good things about it so far.
Thanks for this share. I'm still some way through the Chinese 30 episode series. I'm on episode 10 thereabouts.
@@Iron-Bridge For anyone incapable of figuring it out themselves, and I know there are because look at the government they voted for...it's all on UA-cam for free. Yay.
@@LoveProWrestling The UA-cam version has muted audio, I recommend avoiding it.

Pretty great show, difficult series to adapt but I like how they did it.
I really enjoyed the series, and also this review. And also, Hip Tang.
I had watched it because a reviewer who talked about the novel it's based on said it was good, but I felt like the beginning was too slow and "mystery box" like and then the ending felt extremely rushed. A lot things happened that made me question why. I also have to wonder how the fact that the Trisolarans don't lie never came up before it did, and how this whole thing works if they can't lie. They know what hiding is, and can comprehend the existence of lies, but somehow they are unable to lie even to the humans? Thinking you know something but not knowing it's false can happen, too, so it's weird that they could never comprehend how to take advantage of that.
The ability to lie is dependent on opacity of thought and communicating in composed language.
Perfect.
The french fry slicer scene was cool

Haven't dropped by this fine channel in a while. Did he always seem like he is very drunk while filming?
The drunkenness appears to be new.
He's not wrong about it just ending
I remember how episode 5 ended, with that huge thingy doing the stuff and it being really cool
But I literally can't remember how episode 8 ended. Did it end?
Episode 5 was the end of book 1 where it reveals the Sophons and their lockdown on human research. And the fact that they're 400 years away. That's why it felt like a crescendo. Episodes 6-8 were the beginning chapters of the next 2 books, since they have overlapping plots. Episode 8 ended with The Wallfacer Project being announced. Season 2 will be about The Wallfacers coming up with and implementing their plans over the course of ~200 years.
The most brutal takedown since the Mongol horde.
"Jonathan Pryce, as himself. Because he's old, and that's what's expected."
beautiful
It made me read the rest of the book series, which is a win-win. The last book especially has an incredible scope and deals with a number of scientific, political and philosophical concepts.
I didn't finish the third book. Second had a perfectly good ending and third one just tried to do too much. Also I had by that point grown tired of how Cixin can't write women characters at all.
@@MammaApatotally agreed. the main character made me facepalm so much. and he pushed things too much. It would be better if he kept it a little more simple. The beauty of first two books is that they are actually relatively simple in terms of main mystery.
I couldn't enjoy it due to its core premise. Too doom and gloom for my tastes.
Eh. I think the premise is dumb. Stuff like a scientific discovery making scientist commit Harry Carey in droves. That's something dumb people think about smart people. Nobody likes quantum mechanics, so Einstein got cranky, but he didn't try to go around tasting gun barrels.
Yes, agreed, the last book is literally apocalyptic, and the protag is deeply flawed.

They’re really good books, and they are definitely tough to adapt. I thought it was a decent series and I liked some of the choices that were made. It can only get better from here, so I hope they get the chance to do so.
It can get better, yes. If it’s cancelled.
@@polyestermammoth740 I don't want that personally. It's not a perfect show, but I appreciate it. I would highly recommend the books.
What did I just watch?
Have to agree with you- cool
Only thing I remember about this show is when the Alien thing envelops the whole planet, and me thinking "well, if you can do that, why don't you just smash everyone in it, just squish it a little", and also that having 3 suns in a system wouldn't last enough to become the titular problem, as their gravity would very rapidly mess up their positions, ending the "3 body problem", and then I stopped watching it when I realized that that's what the tittle meant.
But hey, it might be great in the very end that I missed, go figure.
I miss the good old days when all we had were 2 body problems
Made it to episode 3 before I decided to gouge my eyes out.
You made it 1 more episode than I did. I think the true winner was the person who never watched a second. Apparently the 5th episode has some amazing death scenes but I just couldn't wait it out.
You made it 3 episodes further than I did. (I was contemplating restarting my Netflix, but then sanity saved me).
Did my take on the show. Would be interested in your take. Haha
If you kill one or two people, there's no problem disposing of the corpses.
But if you kill three people, that's when you've got a, you know...
i was so fucking confused. i mean i really wasnt paying attention. i was also sober.. that may have been the issue
I managed the first episode.
I have some misgivings about how the characters are written but, having read the books, I also know the general direction of the story. All I will say is get ready to have your mind blown.
I liked the books very much, is it really that bad?
It's not real bad but it's certainly changed to appeal to a wider audience.
DO NOT ANSWER.
They kinda smushed a few things together to speed the plot along. Fat was trimmed.
No, it's pretty excellent really. In some aspects it was even an improvement over at least the first book and yes, i've read all three books and thoroughly enjoyed them.

It has much the same problem as Foundation, another surprisingly good adaptation.

If you can wade through 22 hours of Chinese subtitles, the Tencent version is vastly superior and all 30 episodes were made on the same budget as one Netflix episode. Go figure.
Read the books. Blows both out of the water.
I like the Tencent series, but I feel like it was slightly stretched. Could have been maybe 26 episodes instead of 30. The ship-cutting scene was awesome.
Where can I watch it? I was able to catch some good Chinese series in BiliBili, but usually old ones, pre 2020.
@@aheroforfun6401 Sooooooo there actually is a 26 episode cut that came out a week ago (called the "Anniversary Edition"). You know, for *unrelated* timing reasons.
And yeah, the truth about CDramas is they're subject to a bit of a market struggle for funding. Padded runtimes are very common due to production problems-- your angel investor may demand a cameo role you have to accommodate, your show's value is based on commercial break time meaning more episodes means a better budget, and content laws are extremely tight (hence why the show is missing Ye Zhetai, said scenes were filmed but couldn't clear ratings). So it's a balance of the vision and the checkbook, as always. There's so much working against the Tencent version and I'm utterly shocked by how brilliant its cinematography, score, and its transferral of the actual book concepts to screen were. It's one of the most faithful screen adaptations I've seen in my life and I love it despite its flaws.
