  • Talking about the Netflix adaptation of my favorite book series, plus a bit on the Tencent version and other stuff. I do enjoy rambling, so expect more book-related rambles in the future. I'm going to be lazy as can be with the video editing though, don't expect much quality.

I always imagined the trissolarians as the lesser kindreds of rot from Elden Ring

I have read these trilogy probably 11 years ago by Chinese and been listened to the audio book refresher again and again recent years. And saw both TV series by Tencent And Netflix. They are both good interpretations. In China the TV episodes are always long and relative smaller budge per episodes.

Well said! But I can't help but relate The Great Ravine era to the disastrous Great Leap Forward insanity.

The tri-solarians are tardigrades, not ants in my head-canon.
They can survive any climate by "shutting down" their bodily functions and have survived untold cataclysms.

Well said! But I doubt if D&D realize that the main spirit of these books are the reflection on Chinese bitter memory and struggle in modern history (along with the drastic modernization and abandon of old social structure). The struggle for humantity to survive in the dark place of cosmos in this book is directly coming from those specific historical memory which nearly every modern Chinese could related to. If D&D and Netflex just want to use this show to visualize those crazy scenes in the book that is beyond imagination and call it masterwork of "science-fiction", I doubt the show will end up being too shallow and lost its meaning and purpose during the half way. What do you think of that?

I'm jazzed about the Netflix adaptation. I'm exited to see how D&D adapt some of the more "unadaptable" parts of the story, both for visual elements, and how they'll work in some of the necessary exposition dumps required. It does frustrate me to no end how people expect a 1:1 translation of the book directly into a TV show, especially since it's "based on" the books. There are so many people who have unrealistic expectations on how books get adapted to the screen, not to mention the sheer amount of gatekeeping on Reddit and other platforms - it's worse than when Foundation got adapted.

You lost me when you said the Chinese version didn't gave Ye Wenjie her backstory, seems to me you dropped the show early on, not even halfway, you'll know her father is 100% dead if you actually watched ep10 and 11, and 100% killed by those red guards in the Chinese show if you actually watched ep27. And no Ye definitely didn't get treated nicely in the show, she got the book landed directly on her forehead, wounded, and almost freeze to death, when she reached Red Coast Base she's also treated like an outcast most of the time and constantly have a guard watching after her. Ye was treated much nicer in the Netflix series compared to her counterpart in the Chinese series. And you'll know what motivated her to push the reply button if you actually finished the Chinese series which you clearly didn't based on your words.

I have watched the whole thing. The father doesn't die during the struggle session in the Tencent version, there's even a scene that takes place after the struggle session where Ye Wenjie talks to her dad about how the mom betrayed them. Because all violence and unpleasantness is censored out, they instead just imply that he's too depressed and heartbroken by his wife and other daughter turning against him that he just gives up on living. They never display any violence from the standpoint of the cultural revolution in the Chinese show, and that's an openly acknowledged concession in order to reach CCTV. There are moments where it's vague enough that you can fill in the gaps with knowledge from the books, but if you never read the books and only saw the Tencent version (with no further context), there is absolutely no way you would understand her motivation. It's just a very diluted version of the book.

@@sproutofsinix Ye Zhetai went throught many struggle session in the book, and if you actually watch the whole show you'll knew he died during a struggle session, now it's clear to me you dropped the show early on and I can't take your review seriously.

@@tsukasa1608 +You're just confusing your memory of the book with your memory of the Tencent show. I don't know why you're defending that adaptation so much, it's visually awful (aside from the horrible directing and cinematography, the design of tech stuff and trisolaran stuff at the end is laughable), the added filler characters only serve to undermine the book characters and make them look incompetent by comparison, it dumbs down a lot of science, and it does censor all of the cultural revolution entirely. It's weird to argue for it's merit without lowering your opinion of the book, and I refuse to lower my opinion of the book to accommodate something that mediocre.

@@sproutofsinix The fact that you said it censored all the Cultural Revolution entirely and dumbed down a lot of science proved that you dropped the show early on and probably saw others discussing it on Reddit instead. And I read the trilogy multiple times in both Chinese and English translation, and I also saw both series multiple time.
I'm not confusing nor do I defending it, both series had their own problems, I'm just here to exposed you.

@@tsukasa1608 How is that working out for you? If I didn't watch the tencent show, my review would just be "it's so bad, I couldn't finish watching it", but your fantasy that you somehow saw a different version of it is...interesting? What is the logic? You could have just quoted the scene that you think proves your point, the whole series is on youtube anyway, but clearly you were unable to find proof of something that doesn't exist. All I have left to say is, Tsukasa1608, I am your wallbreaker. Your plans have failed and you have lost.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Netflix show. Far better paced than the Chinese show and frankly, more faithful.
I had a really hard time following the different Chinese characters in the first book as many names sounded so alike:
Chang, Yang, Ding, Dong. I mean, seriously?
