    Good explanation for people that are new to torque converters. Including what stock and towing vehicles might use helps establish baseline information. Most other torque converter videos just dive right into high horsepower and racing explanations without talking about the more basic stuff.

      Appreciate that thank you. This is definitely tip of the iceberg on converter talk but I feel it’s the most relatable info.

    Great explanation on such a mysterious part of the drivetrain. Just did a top end rebuild on a stock 350 from 1995. Stock th350. Upgraded to a comp cam xe274h-10, double roller timing chain, new Chevy performance lifters, resurfaced vortec heads with new valves, beehive springs, 1:5 stock rockers, stock push rods, edelbrock performer rpm intake, 650 cfm Holley carb. Feels strong at higher rpms but is a dog off the line. Granted I have 2.73s in the back and plan on upgrading to 3.73s. Having a hard time figuring out what stall to get, 2500, 2800, 3000? No idea.

      Comp recommends 2200+ in their catalog. Maybe start with 2400 and see if that suits you? As for gears... do the math for expected speeds [in each gear for the street] vs tire diameter to get at engine rpm for common speeds- I like being 200 or so past stall speed on the freeway, some people disagree. Numbers might work with 3.55 - the th350 low gear ratio [oem=2.52] leaves more room than a th400 does. But you didn't mention heads or pistons? That intake closes at 64 abdc... Assuming 5.7" rods. 6cc flat tops with 67cc chambers puts you just under 9.8:1, and 7cc flat tops with 64cc chambers gets you 10:1. Both will run on pump gas, but option 2 will want to stay away from lowest octane -may or may not get away with 89 depending on tune and temps.

    good ,thank you for that info i got a ford explorer, my torque convertor went bad, heard metal inside, like bolts flying around!! So i was concerned about what i was looking at with stall speed, after i watched some videos on the right convertor!! great,, so for towing if i do tow, i'll be after a maybe mid stall speed instead of a high, because i'm not planning tro race thisa vehilcle,lolol ,, the thing was acting weird, and would get gong if i'd rev it up but lower speeds it wouldnt' pull it just happened,, pulled the trans, servos were hard and brittle, that was it, had a lot of metal i n the pan though!! when i went to install my convertor, i heard this mess!! wow!! got this truck used, it ran good for a while!!

    ⬅️ I bought this 07 Classic wrecked with a stock L59 5.3 with a 4l70e, its not my daily driver and I just want it for a tire smoker for fun. I've never had a stall but the 1-2 shift is messed up so I figured if the trans has to come out I may as well stuff a 3000 or 3500 stall in it. My question is, how much would it help? I do plan on doing gears eventually but the trans HAS to be fixed soon so I thought I may as well do it now. Thanks.

    Good video. I’m putting a 2004r in my 75 corvette. Right now I have a th400 with a B&M 28-3200 stall. Wondering if I should stick with that rpm TC? Non lockup. I track the car occasionally. It does 8.2’s in the 1/8 mile. About 350 hp, 3.70 rear. Thanks

    Ok, I have been looking for an explanation of what would happen if you don’t have enough converter. I just built a 350 Olds with a cam that has Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 241/249 and a 112 lobe separation angle. I have a 2500 stall converter in it and 3.50 gears. What will happen with so little converter? The car is a full interior street car

    • @KingJT80
      @KingJT80 Рік тому +1

      that was a lot of cam you had. maybe the 227/233 cam wiht those 3.50 gears and 2500 stall would have been right on the money.

    What would you recommend for a 2008 c6

    • @CoastalRacecraft
      @CoastalRacecraft  2 роки тому +1

      It’ll need to be built to the hp/weight etc.. but if it’s a stock engine with stock cam I would do 3800-4200. The 4200 will be a little looser daily driving until the converter locks up but the ET gain is worth it. If you have a large cam that makes power in a higher band then it’ll need to be closer to 4600 all this assuming it’s naturally aspirated.

    • @CoastalRacecraft
      @CoastalRacecraft  3 роки тому

      Assuming it’s a street car and just guessing where the cam makes it’s power, 3000-3600 stall. If it’s more of a racecar and the cam makes most of its power up top, you’ll want something higher.

      Could possibly have a transmission or valvebody related issue if the lockup clutch pack isn’t burnt up.
