Lyrics:
Riding With Red
(Aaron Watson)
By about the time that I came around
He’d grown tired, his health was headed southbound
He was slow climbing in the saddle
But once he was up he could fly,
Lord he could fly
He told me stories about California Gold
Working with Shorty in that West Texas cold
He was rough as a cob, tougher than nails
But when he talked about her he would cry,
oh how he’d cry
CHORUS:
And I learned how to rope and I learned how to pray
And how actions speak louder than any words you may say
Like bustin’ broncs I’ve hung on for dear life to everything that he ever said
Oh, and though he’s long gone I’m still out here riding with Red
I never liked or learned too much from school
He taught me the hard knocks and the Golden Rule
How to chew, how to spit,
work hard, never quit
He gave me money so I could spend it on the girls
CHORUS:
And I learned how to rope and I learned how to pray
And how actions speak louder than any words you may say
Like bustin’ broncs I’ve hung on for dear life
to everything that he ever said
Oh, and though he’s long gone I’m still out here riding with Red
And I learned how to rope and I learned how to pray
And how actions speak louder than any words you may say
And like bustin’ broncs I’ve hung on for dear life
to everything that he ever said
I’ll keep singing his songs
so his memory lives on
Oh, and though he’s long gone I’m still out here riding with Red

Yes sir country aint dead. Great song!!
@countrygirl countrymusiclover haven't heard from you in a few weeks. Was really hoping your account got deleted.
@countrygirl countrymusiclover 'never had a reason' lol maybe if you were a little more civilized in your comments, I, and many others user I have seen, wouldn't have to call you out. Oh and today's pop country music is ass.
As long as Texas Country exists, country will never die!
it dont get anymore Cowboy than this folks, kids take note this is what real music sounds like!!
Thank You Aaron for such a great song. You took me back to years with some of the Real Cowboys that taught me how to be a what I am now,a cowboy. I passed that to my two beautiful daughters. Those men wear my grandfather, my Dad, my father in law, and my best friend’sDad Mr. Uribe. They were all what your song said. Thank you and God bless you and your family.
Yes sir Aaron. It doesn’t get much better than this. So ready for the album!!! You and josh ward dropping at the same time, so much good music to go around! God bless the south
“Like busting broncs, I’ve held on to dear life”
My grandfather was a rancher back in his prime and he would always break in wild Broncos with his father and he then told me that when was around 15 years old he ran away from home with his older brother brother who was 20 at the time and after 5 months away from home, they come back and find that their father had died from sickness. Whenever he reminisces on those times he had, he would start to tear up and cry because he wasn’t there to say goodbye to his father. My grandfather is a strong man and because of him I know how to rope and brand, he taught me how to ride horses and helped me realize that life can sometimes be rough but with faith and understanding you’ll begin your journey to becoming the man you’ve dreamed to become. My life goal is to join the rodeo and show my grandfather that I’ve really become the man he taught me to be and said I would always become. I love you grandpa.
May God Bless You, and all of yours!
Can't wait to put it in the cd player in my truck and listen for hours. Aaron Watson never gets old.
no homo?
What an amazing song.. its just flat out beautiful lyrics and vocals. Almost made me crack a tear cuz this song makes me think of my grandpa....
Hell Yea! Merica Land of Opportunities
We love our kids and grandchildren! But it’s crazy how a horse can mean so much to us. Sure can be ones best friend to th end !!
Love this! Reminds of a Louis La'Amour story. But a REAL MAN! Love your music, and your stories! May God Bless You, and yours!
This was my dad's favorite song before he passed away
I came across this guy a couple of years ago. And ever since been a fan of his. One of the country singers I can tolerate. Still have the old country sound to it. I do believe he’s from Amarillo, close to where I used to live. His albums do not disappoint.
This song is absolutely amazing reminds me of an Old Family friend who was a rancher with 400 or so cattle when I had to help him. First it seemed more like a chore and I just did what I was told. But after the first day we sat down and just talked after we got them back in the corrals and we became great friends, he was like a father toward me (never had a son) and we joked around while he taught me life lessons and how to be a man. Even though I was only a young’un He treated me like an equal and I have him the up most respect and gratitude. Now I’m 15 6,2 and 240lbs and I have started taking the younger boys from the city at church fishing and that sort of stuff just to give back to the world that have to me. And this song just feels natural and relatable even though he only ever gave me 2.50 for a coke. This song just feels personal and connected I’ve only ever felt this kind of connection with Strait’s songs. And now yours you have such a great talent and I am very excited to play this song for the old man. I’m sure he’ll love your music as well. People call him a cowboy but he’s a self proclaimed mountain man, spending all his free time in the mountains rather than at his ranch. Wow I actually didn’t mean to type this much but this song is just so personally connected.
Beautiful ode to a long gone mentor.
One of the best songs i ever heard;Thank you for keeping country music alive!

Saw him live in April at Portland Aladdin Theater. Loved every minute! He is the best in country music going!
My 18 year old retired, gelding quarter horse taught me how to rope, ride, fall off and get back in the saddle. His name is Red. Love this song
The Song is Beautiful and it's Inspiring
He was slow climbing in the saddle... but when he was up “he could fly”.... my father was a child of the Depression. As a 12 year old, he broke horses for a dollar or a meal. At 15 he joined the 7th Cavalry (prior to WWII). The Cavalry sent him to Farrier School.
He volunteered for the First Special Service Force; was severely wounded, lost his hearing, etc. He wandered the Southwest working on big ranches until he met my mother. Together they went to the Farmers Union Reservoir, the headwaters of the Rio Grande River... high in the Colorado wilderness; and there they raised their family.
A mining accident resulted in his back being fused; it precipitated his early death; but this post is devoted to an incident that took place prior to his death. Some one brought a green broke thoroughbred to have my father to put a set of shoes on it. After my father had finished the job he jumped onto the horse Military style, and with only a rope halter, he proceeded to gallop around “the loop” one, two, three times around to a sliding stop, and throwing the lead rope to me “there’s nothing like a horse to make s man feel alive”
A man of conviction and character.. deeply loved, deeply missed
🙏
You know that's an incredible story that's got American legacy written all over it.. It won't let me copy it or I'd sure be saving it for sure
Not been on a run to get feeding cattle in 15 years, man I miss those days. I miss that simpler life, I hate this city i live in, I want out, need my farm, need my land, need it soon.

Great song! Does anyone know (roughly) where the music video was filmed at? I don't need an address, but it looks a little green for Abilene.

Saw you on the Pat Unleashed show. Thank goodness your staying away from the fake country of Nashville and Austin. Don't let them ruin you. Great song by the way!

How much would It cost to have you play this song at a rodeo and/or barn dance in memory of my grandpa? The rodeo my grandpa was a president of an help make prca sanctioned. Also a true cowboy. Was in ww2 and had cattle drives. True American cowboy hero. Name your price.
Liked Aaron before, now that I know he's a dodge guy, i like him better!
