For years, I avoided buying an SKX. It was easy to understand it’s uniqueness in terms of design and specs for the money, but i felt it would be a letdown given all the hype around it. When I finally picked one up this year, I realized how satisfying it actually is to wear. It’s an icon for $200-ish, and the well-known “flaws” like the non-hacking, non-handwinding movement gives you fun ways of interacting with the watch, such as the “Seiko shuffle” or reversing the crown to hold back the second hand until it’s bang-on with the atomic clock. The small details like the way the case flows and the wave engraving on the caseback make it a pleasure to behold from any angle. It’s the watch that I wear in the most carefree and non-self-conscious way compared to anything else in my collection. All this to say, I am not the least bit surprised to hear you made the same choice. Great video, and wonderful story-telling, as always!

I'd be paranoid to get scratches, dings, while I wear my seikos, gshocks, without worry. I wear them with pride. They're enough to give me self satisfaction. Not participating in this race. Could I afford a Rolex? Not at the moment, did I try to strive to own one? Yes. Just like everyone. if that makes me broke, ok. I have other things to focus on financially. I bought my SKX007 11 years ago and it still gets the most wrist time. The jubilee bracelet is the most comfortable I’ve worn. I recently sold my Submariner 14060 and a Datejust41. Something about Rolex isn’t doing it for me anymore. However, I did keep my Polar 16570 but still, the SKX on jubilee gets 98% of my wrist time. I think I’m done collecting. SKX was a good entry point and it might as well be an exit point.

Bought an SKX007 in 2018 as my first automatic, been with me on many adventures in that time! Had on on the rubber strap until I wanted to switch it up and got the jingle-jangle Seiko OEM Jubilee, and honestly, I love it.
It does its job with nothing superfluous at all, not even hacking. To me the SKX is the epitome of "good enough" for practically everything. It's not perfect, but neither are it's wearers, and it'll never let you down, be out of place, or get you mugged.
Rolex is the status symbol of the watch world, but the SKX is the passion symbol.
You can't be a watch enthusiast and not have a soft spot for the SKX. It is in every way possible, an icon.

I realized its beauty and legacy too late and so bought it aftermarket from an Ebay seller at a Scalped price but I don’t regret even a little bit. This is the only watch in my collection that I paid more than the original price because it’s just too damn gorgeous and a Seiko masterpiece from that time it was originally produced. Great video and commentary. I had probably 15-17 watches that could be considered Submariner homages are deeply inspired by... I finally decided to pull the trigger on investing that much into one watch. The Sub was amazing to obtain, and it felt great to do it. It quickly faded away and I realized that I could live without it. I let it go and I still have 150+ watches in my collection.
I also let go an Omega Aqua Terra because I had two Alpina Aplpiner Quartz watches that filled that feel on my wrist at a ridiculous fraction of the cost.

Great decision my friend. I recently sold my OP for a good price. So now
I've turned my attention fully to Certina and Seiko's SKX range. I have the beautiful DS Super PH 500M (orange dial of course) and original 009, 007 and my favourite 011. They're all on original Seiko jubilee bracelets.
I'm just waiting on a reasonably priced 013 to round out the collection.
You just can't go wrong with an SXK.
I acquired the 009 when they first came out in '85 and it's still going strong. The other two last year. The 011 is a JDM model. And for once, no alignment issues with any of them. I deem myself very fortunate indeed.
Take care my friend. I look forward to seeing what Seiko you get next.

I agree with this viewpoint as sage wisdom! As David S. Stated earlier. I started out watch collecting many years ago with a Seiko SKX173, then the SKX007, then a turtle (all still in my possession). From there the addiction went way overboard! I realize years later, the original three Seiko watches I purchased have the most wrist time. The other contender is my Helm Vanuatu. I’ve sold all of the expenses watches that either didn’t receive wrist time due to fear of theft (I frequently travel to questionable areas), or devaluation from damage, I have found happiness going back to where it all stared! The funny thing is, I’ve received more compliments on my Seiko SKX173 than any other watch I’ve owned! Always enjoy watching your videos!

Your videos are visually spot on, your contents make you think and you’re absolutely correct about the watch collecting journey and the Rolex part. I know a couple of AD who are tired of selling them as they have become the VW of watchmaking. Everyone wears one these days. Boring. Went to a dinner the other night and we were 6 people, 5 of them wore a submariner. True story.
Choose what you like, buy what you adore to wear on the wrist and stop buying into the hype of these brands who every week come up with a new model and another “made up history” about the watch …. We need to move away from this as it is turning the beautiful art of watchmaking into a mass producing consumers addiction.
Here is another thought for you.
I have learned recently that the watch collecting journey is the yellow brick road that never gets to Oz in the end. Been on this one for years and have recently come to the realization that there is no end to it. Also not sure anymore whether to call it "watch collecting" or "OCD" or "obsession" or
"passion" or "hobby" anymore. I form part of a group of people that love watches and some say the perfect number to have is 10, others say 6 and others say 3 Eventhough some out there have over 1000 pieces. Where does it end? What is enough? What is that holy grail watch and does it actually exist? Or is it a moving target?
Is it real or is it what the marketing companies try to sell us .... And more importantly of all ..... how many wrists do we actually have ?? | look at a lot of these brands recently and they just all copy each other so they can sell what is popular...
    .. The "accountants"
now run these groups and each year they sell less, yet 3 to 4 times a year they just up the prices to match the yearly PnL's for the shareholders. Not sure which direction the industry is going in ... Is it still about watch making and the art of ?? Or has it turned into something else .... ? Many questions come to mind. Anyway , keep up these great videos. We love them. And congrats on the step forwards with your latest action and decisions. Great to see. Well done !

I feel that, for my own collecting journey anyway, it all comes back to where I'm most happy. Happy in terms of value, lifestyle fit, and "feeling' of a watch. For me that's Casio and Omega. My SKX was purchased for $180 from Long Island Watch and it was my first nice mechanical watch. It is ISO certification, 200m, screw down crown, has a beautiful engraved case back with The Great Wave of Kanagawa. Newer 5kx replaces that special case back with a piece of glass. I also love the jingly jangle super comfy bracelet that has made the skx loved by so many collectors. As to the 7s26 movement. So the newer ones hacks. Question is why would you ever need hacking on a highly inaccurate movement? Hate to break it to you but neither the 4R series nor 7S26 are accurate movements. So hacking is a moot point. Then there is the lack of hard winding feature of the movement. Do you feel that having to wind the movement 30 times is faster than shaking the watch 3 times to get the 7S26 movement with the “magic lever” started is easier ? Yes the newer watches may be prettier but so much has been lost.

I have never sold a watch I owned (that's why I have 89 now). I can't just get rid of a watch I researched, wanted and loved. It goes back in the box and one day it will come back to light. I have one daily driver (actually every other day). It's an Oceanus watch, but I wear a different one every other day and I love it :). Selling your beloved watch to get the next grail is a rabbit hole. Wait till you have enough money to get your grail and you won't feel the need to buy a new one every week. The moment you get the Rolex, you will "need" the Patek, then the Tank, then the Panerai. It will never stop, unless you stop selling. Later edit to answer your last question: I have the SKX007 and the Casio Duro as my diver watches. I rarely even swim, so don't need a Rolex for some family time in the pool, or on the beach.

It's interesting to watch this. I had a couple of rolexes 2 years ago including the sub and when I got rid of it I made sure I remembered why. For me while I like the watch itself I didn't want to be connected to what the brand was becoming nor the image of the sub, I just don't care for it. The more glances I got the more I resented rolex for having such a popular watch that I happened to like. Having bought more watches for my collection, it was time for them to go. They went within a week of each other and I've been 'clean' ever since.

  • @midwestgent9618

You've come full circle! This is interesting because so many enthusiasts that aspire to the sub have an SKX! I have had SKX007, SKX173 and SKX175 but have moved on. I still aspire to a 16610 which is for me a grail watch but for now I'm just enjoying the ride and am wearing a Squale Y1545 Militaire which is a great watch. I love the 40mm case, the lightly domed sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel. Downsides? The fauxtina isn't for everyone and while the lume lasts all night it's pretty dim, the matte dial is quite subdued and the font used on the date wheel is too small and thin to easily be readable with no cyclops. Small gripes on a great watch that is going to stick around. Thank you for starting the conversation!

Seiko SKX checks all the boxes that make an ideal diver watch. It just doesn't have the aesthetic perfection of Rolex and its hefty price tag, which is fine for millions of collectors worldwide. The SKX fits very well in the entry level market it was designed for. However, its discontinuation and replacement by the more expensive Seiko 5 diver style is one of Seiko's biggest blunders, in my humble opinion.

You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years... if you can find one. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years (5kx line, Turtle, Prospex) or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since it is from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectable. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more... they were already sold..

I used to be a long time Seiko fan, until recently. Accuracy has gone from bad to worse, and not to mention very basic QC issues like misaligned indices and bezels. In the past, the new models like the upcoming 200m GMT automatic diver would excite me so much. Now i will ask "will it be accurate?" "will the accuracy fluctuate wildly, some days + and some days -?" "is the QC ok?" . In this time and age, a -15sec to +25sec accuracy guarantee is simply unacceptable for a $1800-$2000 mechanical watch.
For the way they are positioning and pricing themselves now, they are no longer the good value, reliable, humble good friend we know. It is just living in the shadow of its past glory, turning fancy, without improvement or even drop in quality, and charging way too much for its too many "limited edition" pieces.
People often talk of the Swiss pieces as overpriced. But the quality of Seiko's $800-$2000 are just shameful. If you pitch a $700 Tissot Gentleman against any of the seikos till double the price, it still has tighter built and QC, and a superior movement within.
Sadly Seiko has turned into such a snobbish-anti-snob brand.
It is the hipster of the watch world.
Basically gave my last piece away last year.

    • @Anirossa

I kinda feel like Seiko don't really care about mechanical watches they make being accurate.
They introduced quartz for the world to enjoy with mind-buggling accuracy and with use of what at the time was revolutionary engineering using material science and computing power
When people turned around and wanted more inaccurate mechanical watches, seiko just went: Ok. Kinda like showing off something incredible you have made, and people wanting what they already have
Feel like it mirrors well in Grand Seiko too, Seiko prefer to innovate and strive for new technology. Not play with watches using the mechanics chapters of the physics book that is limited by pressure, temprature and wear that quartz watches are not.
Not hating on mechanical watches, I like my mechanical watches, but I do get Seiko as well, only reason they make mechanical watches today, is because it sells and has good profit margins for them..
How I see it, its kinda like classic cars, they are not all that great, but theh are mechanical, simple, rugged and with a lot of soul. So they can't be replaced, even if there are new cars with incredible stats out there..

    • @gorillaofjohn15
      @gorillaofjohn15 Рік тому +2

Mechanical movements have been around for ages. Even if Seiko is only interested in digital, there is a basic level of QC that is not only attainable, but required.
Other cheaper, smaller, newer watch brands doing it better than them gives them no excuses.
Nobody asked Seikos to reinvent the wheel. In terms of bread and butter movements, everybody does that, from Pateks to Rolexes to Omegas all the way down to microbrands. And these brands have innovations and a spirit of excellence to call their own. Why is Seiko not doing it?
The classic car analogy could be far fetched. Because mechanical is well and alive, and remains totally relevant to all watch lovers. It is going nowhere, and right at this moment, there are new innovations being made everywhere. Today, I will buy a mechanical watch for its innovative, excellent and reliable movement. METAs and COSC certifications hold watchmakers to high standards and good brands aspire to be certified by them. They are not antiquated technology. My last purchase was an Omega. A joy to behold in both worksmanship and actual technology.
Mechanical movement aside, Seiko can't even get its basic QC right. Misaligned bezels, misaligned hour markers on the dial itself, are ancient world level of quality issues. The last i checked, 6 consecutive pieces of the Sumo solar quartz GMT, selling for USD 6-700, have serious misalignments. And this was across 4 shops, in 2 different countries, over 2 months. I gave up on mechanical Seikos and wanted to get that as a fun piece, and even with such low expectations, that watch has failed.
If we want to talk about innovations, i turn to my apple watch right now.
If you want battery life, i just go to my solar quartz.
There is nothing else Seiko needs to do right now that is more important than getting the very basics right.
The very bare minimum basics, that they actually are charging audacious amounts of money for.

    • @Anirossa
      @Anirossa Рік тому

@John Lin Yeah, I do agree with you. I love seiko divers, I got the 38mm solar diver, and mine has no QC issues besides the beezle being around 0.1mm off if I use a glass to really get a good look. It also hits the marks to a point where I can't really see it's off at any point. But I did inspect it carefully at the AD I bought it at, and I would not order one online as I know Seiko, and I did talk them down to 440 Euros, which is 10%+ off. As their 600 asking price just make me giggle, even if its pretty much my perfect watch, I also love how it does a little under +1/month.
With how I love Seiko divers, do I really want mechanical ones when I see them, but then I remember their terrible movements and I stay away.
I got a newer Seiko 5 with the 4R with the day date. Stopped using it as I can't stand how it's all over the place from day to day. And I've heard the 4R tend to do better in general than the 6R. And my Seiko 5 I got for 190 USD new, The 6R ones are often 6 times that!!
The 4R movement also did break on me, but Seiko did take it back, binned the movement, and slapped in a new one for free, as was under warrancy.
I have a Tissot powermatic 80 PR100 watch, I got for 180 USD, and it's pretty much spot on everyday, gained a couple of seconds in a little over a week.
So when it comes to mechanical watches, will I not buy any seikos, as long as they resemble anything they currently are on the movement side. I got a great experience with Miyotas, on the other hand.
But I guess mechanical watches are not really that good tool anymore, as they are either way too valuable to be slapped around, too inaccurate or just the fact that they can't withstand the same beating as physics are just not on their side..

My replacement for my ProSpex Seikos was an SKX. I love the look. I love the wear. I love the size. I love not hacking/setting it. I loved it so much, I bought a second one/ They are all I wear now.

Good for you….I agree 100%…it all about the experience of ownership….nothing can erase your joy and memories of past watches. When you find that you’re not wearing them, it’s time to let them go and get something else that you will wear…unless you’re one of those people who have the ability to hoard a huge collection of watches that spend all their time in a box inside a safe. Nothing wrong with that, but for me personally, watches should be worn.

I did the same. Only I bought SRPD55. The GMT MASTER is irreplaceable but the Sub is just too simple, boring and common to suck up 10k of your money.

With the Master 2, not worth joking around, but with the sub, Yes. Agreed :)
