    I have this system. I am a novice gardener, this will be my second year gardening. I found that if you use very warm water with the pellets, they absorb and swell alot better than with cool or cold water.

      You're right Vikisha Waldkirch, they do! For some reason these little things didn't want to expand for me even though I used hot water strait from the water heater...oh well, hopefully the next batch will be better. :)

    Saw your video...I did this for the past two years with no problem planting hot pepper seeds.....I've found that the trick is to use the burped,or the jiffy pettets....but I've found the key for getting the pettets to work properly is to use warm water,and also a heat mat for quick germination....

    I had difficulty with the peat pods as well. I used hot water. I reverted to using a knife to help it along. I also felt that there wasn't enough peat so I mixed it with worm castings. I put it outside since we still have very warm days. We'll see how this works! Thanks for the video

    I hate it when the peat doesn't expand! :) I was glad to see some green at the end of the video! You are doing great things there Wayne.

      So...is this a common problem Blake Kirby? I've really never used peat before so I really don't know...yes I'm super glad to have some green! :)

    I put each pellet in 30ml of water put in microwave for 10 to 15 seconds depending on microwave watts. It gets hot and makes sure everything is sterile to prevent damping off, and absorbs the water and is ready to be used. I mix it up as it cools down and when cool enough I put my seed with tap root into it and in a day or two it will sprout. This is for the smaller pucks I'm sure more water for xl size pucks etc. just did this with white widow, hindu kush, big bud and purple haze all sensi seeds. I like using these because after I can rinse the coco off and straight into my dwc 5 gal bucket with drip irrigation.

    As others have said, hot water is best for inflating the pellets. I’ve found that those pellets tend to retract as they dry out. It makes ur root so tight, even if you remove the paper. Don’t use those pellets for plants that like to go dry.

    It says right in the directions to put the Pellet rack right into the base and then water it. My 7 year old had these done in 10 minutes and ready to plant

    what type of grow light were you using on your seed?
    If you do start seeds again like this I would like to see a side by side comparison of them with perolite and traditionally planted.

    Great job, I was worried that it was going to be a disaster since the peat was not working out well. how did the wick work out for you.

    • @WayneMeador
      @WayneMeador  10 років тому

      Thanks Wes, I was worried about it as well for a bit but I gotta say, I really like that method of planting...I may try it again (using vermiculite), the seeds popped up in less than 4 Days! The wick seems to be working well but I would say that the center of the tray gets a little dryer than the outside edges...so I've been using a spray bottle to add a little bit more water to the middle seed pots.

    • @poisonivy6477

      That’s what I hate about these. The jiffys seed starting kit is soooo much better and easier!! Pour the warm water and within seconds the pellets expand. Then you can sow in the seeds. On top of that, each expanded pellet is encased in a netting so it’s 10x easier to transfer seedlings to pots. These burpee pellets are such trash!! Too much going on just for the pellets to be a hassle. Even when it comes to transferring the plants from the burpee kit, it’s super difficult. Worst buy ever.

    I hate those little compressed peat pellets seems like if they're not perfectly upright when you pour the water on them they expand sideways. I started buying everything from greenhousemegastore best prices i could find anywhere. Happy gardening!

    • @WayneMeador
      @WayneMeador  10 років тому

      Thanks for the tips, I actually feel the same way about the peat pellets! lol I'm thinking about just using this wicking system (it seems to work well) with my own mixture of soil...hopefully it works! I'll check out the greenhousemegastore, sounds very cool.

    If you will initially pour hot water over your peat pellets and let it drain down and cool, they will puff up fast and the wicking will proceed from there. Be sure the peet is cool before you put the seeds in. Works every time.

    • @WayneMeador
      @WayneMeador  10 років тому

      I'd love to know the secrete...do you use boiling water? The water I used was super hot from the tap but it didn't expand them properly...either way, I think I'm really starting to like this little gizmo anyway! :) Thanks for the comment.

    • @SusanRogersMakingItWork4Me
      @SusanRogersMakingItWork4Me 10 років тому +1

      Not boiling, it will melt your plastic trays, super hot from the tap has always worked for me. Did you pour over them or just into the lower tray? They need to be saturated from the top. Sometimes you just get bad pellets, those need time out, LOL Seriously though, I pour way more than needed then drain the excess.

    • @WayneMeador
      @WayneMeador  10 років тому

      Susan Rogers - yes, I did pour the hot water over top of them this time. I thought the boiling would be too hot, so I just use hot tap water. It's quite possible, that the pellets were just no good. I'll have to give it a try one more time before I do a review. Hopefully I can help somebody! :-) Thanks for your feedback.

    You have to have the peat pellets sitting flat or else they will expand sideways and get jammed and dont expand!!
