Robbie; love ya bud but watch this video back… pretty sure you were closer almost every time with the Berg when you used it as an approach disc… most of our bags are big enough to also carry throwing putters for slightly different shots. It surprises me how many influencers dislike a disc that as an approach disc is one of the best in the game. That’s why everyone likes the Zone… low glide and overstable. This is the same just slower which means typically lower margin of error. I bag a Zone and Berg along with throwing putters and have been playing for 12 years. Politely and completely disagree with the “training wheels” comment. Why would anyone not want to be closer to the basket regardless of putting skill? The Pig also similar just faster and less torque resistant.

Yeah, the Pig is very similar, just a bit more speed and fade 👍
The Berg is a game changer to disc golf, just like the sand wedge was to golf. People complain at first, then before you know, everybody’s using it lol

The problem with what Robbie is saying yes, the berg doesn't fill ALL throwing putter applications, eventually you'll need to disc up, and that's his major hold up. As if like, that's not the case for literally every other disc. Just because you can throw a Grace for a specific shot, doesn't mean you can use it for all other shots, so you'll have to disc up to like a ballista or rive. That's just hate at this point because like I said, everything he said about the berg can apply to any other disc, the only issue is the berg is the shortest flying disc at 1/1/0/2.

I bought my first berg last week. I played with it for the first time yesterday. It does not seem to go as straight as advertised. That is until you put the juice into it. Thrown hard, it was a laser beam that dropped out of the sky at the basket. I think the need to throw it hard is part of the opposition folks have to it. I am definitely not used to throwing hard for 200 ft upshots. But they did end up next to the basket when I did so. And they landed pretty flat. When I threw the berg at 50% like I would an envy or pixel, the disc would fade hard. I think there is room enough in my bag for this odd flight characteristic. More testing must be done.

What makes the Berg special to me is forehand approach shots. I used to use an envy for forehand approaches and it worked well but it's also glidey and you need touch. The Berg is a fantastic forehand approach disc with way more torque resistance than the envy.

As a berg lover myself, I will say that it does what Robbie said. I was using my berg for upshot’s and putting, but recently I have changed up my styles and “have taken off the training wheels”. Do I still bag my berg? YES. Will it ever completely come out of my bag?NO. There’s times that I need a touchy forehand or anhyzer shot that the berg just does so much better for me then any of my other disc. With this all being said, the berg is a great disc. It will always be a staple in my game and comes out on occasions when I need to lean into something I know better then other disc. Great video and still loving the content.

People complaining about the Berg and finding it “cheap” or like “straining wheels” is the exact same thing that happened with golf when the sand wedge was introduced…
“Wow that’s so cheap that players can get so much more spin and have the ball stop/backspin”. And then over time, everybody started carrying higher lofted wedges because they changed/improved the game.
The Berg is in the exact same situation. It’s the KING of approach discs because it changes/improves the game. Why have 4 approach discs when you can carry 1 or 2? Why have an approach disc that could leak right or left when you can simply go straight at it and avoid big mistakes?
Just our 2 cents on the matter!

The Berg is a utility disc for me. I use it around water or ob lines to limit distance, especially on windy days. I get a consistent soft landing on 150-200ft shots without the chance of a wind bounce causing me to go 10-40ft long. It gets windy in Oklahoma.

Man after thinking about it, totally agreeing with the points Robbie is making here, and seeing the flights of the berg in this light, it's got me considering a lot of new ideas about the berg. When you combine the uniqueness of the handful and the uniqueness of the flight there's truly no disc quite like it, which could lead me to make a pretty wild statement here. I would have to say if i'm being honest, completely unbiased, and very positive, my true and real opinion is that the berg could possibly be the worst disc of all time.

I use my berg for most shots mentioned in this video. I don't think it was mentioned in the video but the burg has a tendency to land flat when thrown flat, while most other discs typically land on some sort of angle, yes you can force those to land flat(call it a skill gap if you'd like). This makes it perfect for upshots with sloping greens. At my home course I use it for one specific hole, 270 foot down hill with a sloping green. I can throw the burg hard and flat give it a ace run and be with 10feet of the basket. Yes I can throw a zone or luna or any other putter and do the same thing, but the burg never rolls away for me. Plus its just a very fun disc to throw.

Hey Robbie. As a member of the Berg Gang, I really liked this video. Is the berg for everyone? No. But I think there are plenty of reasons to like the berg. I've been using the berg for about 2 and a half years now. I think scoring comes from trust in your discs, and I certainly trust the berg. Touchy approach shots? Berg. Short drives with OB past the basket? Berg. Tunnel shots that can't afford much side to side drift? Berg. Behind a bush and forced to stand out for a flick putt? Berg. Shockingly, I recently fell in love with another disc that I think is a natural extension to the berg. Robbie, you may have mixed feelings about this one. But its the pig. Yepp, recently became a pig farmer too. I bought my first pig on a whim a few weeks ago and from hand feel alone, it went straight into the bag for a tournament. Something about it (Your videos may have influenced me a bit) told me exactly how it would fit my game. I leaned on it a lot during that tournament despite never throwing it prior and it did so well! To me, it feels like a faster and more stable berg. That low glide and sticky plastic makes it deadly accurate! So I gotta propose an alliance between the Berg Gang and the Pig Farmers out there! Both of these discs can live in harmony with one another and deserve the following they have.

look I use a Berg because its my short distance straight throw, and my putter again because of the air breaks helps me since i have switched to a spin putt and other discs will just keep flying past the basket. Also when I go out and do a one disc round the berg is what is always grab. It just wants to go straight, glowplastic is slightly over stable version, and a really beat up berg is slightly under stable.
I have different disc for different shots and the berg fits its shots better then other discs....

I used to not bag a berg, but when i got one it opened up a few things. No matter the power, it goes straight, and my glow berg even has some stability to boot. Forehand or backhand it goes straight. I can be an aggressive player at times, and this let's me go for throw ins much more safely from within 200 feet or so. There have been times where a throwing putter or a tactic type disc are just too fast, even on approaches. And if you power down you don't get the same control/fade. It's a unique shot, but you don't need one.

The name on the disc is much like the numbers of a disc, a guideline of what to expect. I've had multiple identical discs that flew very different from one another, and similar numbers that were night and day different. Point is, find a disc that feels good, and learn to throw it. Don't worry about what others think about your bag, play your game, try discs when you can, but don't expect the same disc to fly the same as the one your buddy let you borrow!

I bag a BEOrg, Glitch, a “throwing putter” and an Area 51… everything has its purpose. There is one shot with the Berg nobody ever talks about and that is the dead straight roller for escape or for really low ceilings. The Berg is really a good option for some downhill holes up to about 300-ish feet. We have one here that is 280 and about 50 feet DOWNHILL. A light flick of the wrist and the disc does the work. Why don't I throw a grenade or tomahawk? How many years of pitching/tennis/golf/ice hockey/surfing damage does your shoulder have? Mine has plenty... and I've yet to figure how to keep any gliding putter from not going into the bushes long even when throwing on a downhill angle (hits and rolls).

  • @1isone
    @1isone Місяць тому

So, the biggest problem i have with people who say that you shouldn’t bag a berg, is the types of arguments they use and how often they contradict themselves.
Example, the argument with “what happens when you comes to a 280ft hole, then you need to add an extra putter you can throw far with”, but then you use that same argument but now in favor of the regular putter when it comes to overstable shots or forehand approaches, “you can just add a Harp🤷‍♂️”.
Also, you can throw the Berg far, look at Tobias Söderqvist (sweden) on youtube, he throws it on any hole that is up to 90m (295ft) with perfect precision.
Also, the argument that you can’t be touchy with a berg is ridiculous, you can be touchy with any disc and theow it soft, it is literally what the berg does amazingly, alot of players runs the basket from anywhere inside 100ft with touchy upshots, wich is something you can in fact do with the berg that you can’t with other discs if you don’t wanna risk going to far away from the basket.
Also, why would you not want to bag a disc that you can throw on any angle in any conditions?
You can’t do that with regular “touchy” putter, like in a headwind from 250, you’re never gonna throw a beat up aviar with precision, but you can with a berg.
Also, why would you not want to bag a disc where you can minimize the amount of slots you need to fill?
    You yourself have tought that?
Instead of having one putter each for stable forehand shots, understable forehand shots, straight backhand shots, understand turnover backhand shots, onlverstable backhand shots, you can have all in these in one disc.
You can even throw rollers with it when you need to go through bushes.
Like your arguments for why you shouldn’t bag a berg, contradicts everything you taught out over the years.
And it’s not a beginner disc, Joseph Anderson who just won on idlewild bags a berg, Eric Oakley and Scott Stokely bags a Berg, a lot of pros in sweden and the rest of scandinavia uses the berg.
The reason more pros on the pro tour doesn’t is because they aren’t allowed to.
I’d argue pro’s have even more of a reason to bag a berg, since you can use it for every single shot type inside 300 feet, and the got the power to throw it 300+ with accuracy.

i generally try not to watch your vids, but i saw the berg things and was waiting for you to butcher another berg review. It must get good engagement because i see these same views every once in a while but almost all dg channels have some sort of video on the berg.
off the top almost every one is carrying a bag that holds 20-25 discs. You dont need to have 1 throwing putter, thats why the berg gets a slot, among other putters. want more distance off the tee, put an envy, pure or numerous other putters that have more glide and you can dial in the stability to your own taste. I carry 2 proxys for putting, 1 glow proxy for throwing straight, 1 envy for throwing further and more OS, and a berg. Berg is just easier to throw shorter than the proxy or envy, my max distance with the berg is just shorter than the other 2 options.
Then you have the crutch/training wheel argument, again a bad argument. Both of those are add ons to correct a certain problem. A Berg is a disc like a destroyer or a tee bird or a zone, its a disc, its pdga legal, and they aren't oop. They go mainly straight as you detailed in the throw with the trees in the way. You perfectly illustrated it with your throws the wizard got up there but look how it faded and ended up under some bushes. Thats a key for me, instead of worrying about bad finishes,as in l i didn't get that flat or had too much hyzer, ill throw straight at it with a berg.
Yes you can get a similar flight from throwing with angles, back loading grip, etc, thats intermediate to advanced stuff, but if all it gets you is a similar shot to the berg, does it make sense to try to control those angles when you have something you dont have to control said angles?
the flick is a good point, its what i learned to flick on because of the large rim. You show the flick to run at the basket, but you also have a flick that can get around trees/corners on a high anny and land flat on very short shots of say 100 ft. Can you do that with other discs? of course but their glide is often going to make the turn later and the disc goes further. With the large rim its easier for me to get the angle right and not turn it over, although like any disc, it will turn if put on too much angle.
YOu also missed that it's a great forehand roller disc for scrambles with the big rim that acts like a tire. Again for longer forehand rollers, i might use a zone to get 100 more feet, but generally when im talking scrambles its 75-100 ft. Its just shorter and most people arent playing pro level distance courses. In my experience its gonna be mainly 300-400 holes with about 3-5 under 280 ft and about 3-5 over 400 ft. In those distances its very easy to throw 50-150 from the basket, the berg throw is just obvious.
On throwing full power, some people over do it, i notice most young guys do it more often because they dont have the fear of their arm falling apart. One guy i play with throws legit 400-450 off the tee, and i gave him a berg, which he wasnt into too much. I see him about 6 months later and hes throwing a berg. First thing he says, 'power control', which makes sense. throwing close to full power is much easier that throwing 50-60-70%, it just is. if you are getting in 3-5 rounds a week and some field work, maybe you perfect your touch, but even taking time off can throw that touch off. Most people are not gonna get 3-5 rounds in for the rest of their DG life, so that touch really comes and goes.
you also gave the concept of cycling pigs, which is cool, but with a berg, at any stage of wear, it flies like a berg. its not any more understable after a few hundred rounds. Most people either like k1 or k3, and some say one or the other is more OS, but still there isnt much of a fluctuation like. driver or even mid with long term wear. You dont have to look at domey-ness or plastic or run. ive gone from z to crystal flx back to z zones in the last year and even that consistent mold has slight variations that are much greater than any k1 or k3 berg.
the biggest mistake i see with most of these berg vids, like yours, is you dont throw it and you make it out like its a negative, even though it consistently does what it does more often than almost any disc on the market. In reality, outside of just hating the hand feel, it makes the MOST sense to have a disc to very faithfully rely on. The great molds like the buzz, the teebird, eagle, wraith & destroyer all are great and copied because they do what they do very consistently although even those molds arent as consistent as the berg. Even all those molds most people covet more after a year of play when they are seasoned. The berg is out of the box, exactly what it is.

You come across, maybe in a manner you don't even intend, as extremely negative, or condescending, about the Berg. That's the whole video in general, but specifically at around the 15:50 mark. I feel you're asking the wrong question. Instead of need to take extra time to get an Aviar or Wizard to do whatever it is you want it to do, why on earth would someone not use a disc (the Berg) that already gets the desired result? Baseball players use a bat to hit the ball; they could learn to use their heads, but the process is a bit more painful. As a club leader, I teach new players to use a disc for a particular shot that they can duplicate. After all, if the success can't be duplicated - basically wishful thinking each throw - there's not much point. I don't understand how content creators increase their credibility by reviewing discs - positively or negatively - that they acknowledge they don't ever throw except for 5-6 times on camera. The admission all but invalidates the opinion (in my opinion).

@@kspraddiscgolfguy totally fair points! I am sorry it came across as extremely negative. You are right that was not my intention! I certainly made a few jokes early, but wanted to be very intentional about explaining the validity of the berg. I think saying comparing the Berg to a Wizard and hitting a Baseball with your head is a little extreme, but I love the idea of teaching consistency with shots. While I am more familiar with throwing a wizard which showed in the video with my ability to throw consistent shots, I am not a stranger to the berg either. I have undoubtedly thrown the wizard more, but I have also thrown the berg a considerable amount. 🤣🤣 funny enough that Berg is from a two round tournament where we only played with Bergs. I tried to make sure that I said multiple times in the video that I do not think there is anything wrong with bagging a berg if you are looking for those shots. My belief and hope for others though is that I believe you unlock even more scoring potential by pushing the boundaries of other discs is all! But I’m not gonna say people are wrong or fools for bagging one! Just trying to present the other side of the coin!

@@RobbieCDiscgolf @RobbieCDiscgolf thank you very much for responding. I appreciate it. My baseball example was simply meant to illustrate a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. If the Berg works for a player, there's not a real good reason for that player to seek success for the same type of shot from another disc.
As for you noting in your comment above that you "have ... thrown the Berg a considerable amount ..." that is different than what you convey in the video above. At the 17:54 mark, you say about the Berg: "I do not throw often at all. I pretty much only throw Bergs on video."
Around the 11:30 mark you ask a question to the effect of, "what if my Berg is my main throwing putter and I'm on a 280-foot hole?" Well, my disc golf community might be different from yours in terms of ability and experience, but no one I know who throws the Berg on a regular basis (staple the bag) tries to throw it from the tee pad nearly 300 feet. There are other discs for that. Focusing on what the Berg doesn't do well is kinda silly ... I mean, no one putts with a Destroyer, but I'd say a Destroyer has a spot in many players' bags. Right?
Around that same 11:30 mark, after you throw it from the 280-ish foot tee pad, you highlight that the Berg is the furthest from the basket. But that's not the issue - or, at least, it was not the issue when you threw the Berg the first time in the video. That time, you noted the Berg was, in fact, closest to the pin - but then dismissed that, saying you only want your approach shots to be close enough to be able to comfortably putt. So, which is it? Do you want the closest shot consistently, or a comfortable putt?
Hyzer shots - and being able to throw out wide and/or high - are great. But there are a great many courses that have trees or other obstacles that don't consistently allow for such shots. The Berg is a reliable disc for many who choose to learn how to use it (coupled with a positive mindset).
And finally, you sound very condescending (intentional or not) when you talk about "if you don't want to put in the work" and do this "as a hobby" ... But why would a player put in the extra work with a different disc looking for a result that one is already getting from the Berg?

1 topic you didn't mention at all, and probably because your Berg is in the "wrong plastic", is the ground play, or lack thereof.
It looks like you have never tried a K1 Soft Berg, else you'd remember it, and you would have brought this up.
I'm a 2-year covid MA3 Player throwing 300-ish (for context), and my Berg has been the disc with which I've had the most successful throw-ins (forehand flicks for most of them), or the most unsuccessful throw-ins that left me with a tap-in ant not a stressful comebacker. Even for jump putts, if you miss, it just sits.
Humour us, get a K1 Soft and try to have it skip / roll on any hard ground.
K1 Soft Berg is always next to my "throwing approach premium plastic" disc in my "approach bag pocket", currently a Get Freaky Zone. It's not replacing, it's complementing.

First off I love your stuff, big fan. That said, I'm a big believer in "Throw the disc you like that does what you want" - much like pineapple on pizza, well done steaks, or whisky in cola - if that's how you like the thing, then you do you.
If you have a disc that flies the way you want it to, and does the thing you want it to do, use it. Why 'learn to throw another disc to do the same thing' - by that logic I can take a and learn to do all the things with it, and just force it to do what I want. (one disc bag baby!)
Would I throw a berg on a 280 ft hole? (hole 3) nope, but I wouldn't throw my throwing putter on that either, I'm a noodle arm and 300 is me on a full yeet, and that takes me throwing a driver. If I were limited to a shoulder bag, where I had 5-6 discs, it's unlikely that I would bag a Berg, as I'd need less discs to do multiple things. Thing is I'm not, I can carry my standard 13 disc bag and have the right disc for the job a throwing putter, a putting putter and 2 upshot discs (savior and berg) and use the one that's right for the line I have. and don't get me wrong, I can through the Pure on a stall, but if I mess up, it's easy for it to go loooong, but if I upshot a Berg on a death putt, then even if I over shoot, it won't be by much. Also you forgot one of the best things a Berg does, it's a fantastic high wind putter. - In the end throw what makes you happy. Thank you sir, you're appreciated!
