  • How did Micro 4/3 cameras and lenses that I brought to my recent trip to New Zealand perform during the trip? Is Micro Four Thirds the best system for travel photography? Micro Four Thirds is definitely smaller and lighter than APS-C and Full Frame cameras but are the compromises worth it? I will answer all those questions in this video!
For my recent trip to New Zealand I bought my Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Lumix G85 and GX85 as well as the Panasonic Leica 8-18mm f/2.8-4 and the Panasonic Lumix 35-100mm f/4-5.6. This M43 setup really works well in my opinion but there are some important notes that I want to share in this video. I also brought some other non Micro Four Thirds cameras and accessories that I want to share to you in this video.

The reason why you bring a 20mm should not be to fill the gap between zooms (not mainly): you feel the need of that if you are out for a casual walk with just a camera at your neck or when you are going somewhere after sunset: 20mm is about anough to cover any normal circumstance, and fast enough to keep shutter speed down and ISO up.

I suggest you look into the Panasonic DWM-HGR2 handgrip. I nearly sold my GX-85, but a friend suggested this grip. It made it into a new camera! I can now use the GX-85 comfortably for hours even with a 14-140mm or 100-300mm lens.

Thank you for the suggestion! Seems like a good solution for the grip on the GX85.

Your new Zealand vlogs have been great. Queenstown is my favorite destination. I use the GX85 and have a variety of lenses. Since I do a lot of outdoor photography (landscapes, seascapes and nature) I don't like changing lenses so my Olympus 14-150mm is on the camera 90% of the time. For birds and wildlife I will often change this for the Olympus 75-300mm. The rest of my lenses are pretty much the same as you although I don't use ultra wides, since I don't like the distortion. On my last trip, to Fiji, I took the GX85 with the Leica 15mm f1.7, the Lumix 12-32 and the Lumix 35-100. My most used lens was the 12-32mm. This is also an ideal combo to keep in a pocket when walking around the towns and markets. Thank you for sharing your vlogs.

Thank you John for the kind comment! Also thank you for sharing your setup as well! Seems like a very solid kit you have with the GX85 and a few lenses 👍

Thanks for sharing. Your photos you took with the 35-100mm lens gave some wonderful examples of combining portraiture with landscape. I thought that was a great way of capturing memories, for example, the scenes where your wife is in the foreground (portrait) with the mountains in the background (landscape). The combination also added nice depth separation.

Thank you for the kind comment John! It was really something that I literally just learned on this trip. Before this, I was all about the wide angle scenery and don't really know how to compose using a telephoto lens.

I understand the feeling of being overwhelmed by the scenery. I experienced the same in the Canadian Rockies. I made the mistake of trying to do too much in the time I had there so I also returned home feeling that I should have slowed down. I'm sure that I would have had fewer photographs but more memorable keepers. Still, we live and learn from the experience.

Great tips like always. I have a question. Back then I used different kind of lenses during my backpacking trips like 14 140,8 18 and primes. Now I only kept my two primes 15mm 42.5 and sold everything else. I want to stay minimalist but I just realized I need an everyday lense to avoid to change lenses everytime. I am looking toward the 12-60 (need the 12mm and prefer it to long reach end of my previous 14 140.) have u tried the lumix 12 6p kit lense? The Pana Leica looks better but the weight and the price kinda makes the thing prohibitif for me. What do u think?

Hello again Tom, I haven't tried the 12-60mm kit lens, but I am pretty sure it will work really well for travel. If you don't need to reach 60mm and okay with slightly shorter focal length (about 42mm like your prime lens), then consider Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II (the second version). Very small, very sharp, very lightweight, and definitely not expensive (hopefully cheaper than the 12-60mm kit lens). Hope this helps!

@@Gary_W big thanks for your feedback I tried the 14 42. Already have the panne 42.5 and 15mm
Just need 12mm and a all around lense. Just I don't think going for the Leica 12-60, too expensive and bulky.

Why hold a GX8 when you're talking about the G85 instead of just holding the G85?

@Gary_W Just wondering why, no big deal brother. I probably would have used the GX8 to record the video. 👌

@@BrawndoCorporation I would love to use my GX8 to record the video, however it has a bit of problem in the audio input after I serviced it many years ago, the audio coming out from that camera sounds really weird and noisy 😣

@@BrawndoCorporation I hope so too, there's no real camera service center here where I live. I still use the GX8 for stills and for recording B rolls though, it's been a very useful camera.
