Yes, best idea to get the entire turning unit replaced. Most manufacturers now seem to prefer to do that. Also, you get the bonus of a new motor, bearings, and gears. You should then get a long service life from the turning unit. Suggest making a Planned Maintenance job of inspecting the motor brushes every 3 months, looks like commutator material not very long-lived, or wrong grade of brushes has been fitted sometime in the past. Safe sailing!
I am now retired from the Canadian Coast Guard (EL tech) for more than 31 years and some of our larger vessels used the Sperry Mk127E X band radar which had a two speed DC motor with a set of brushes for short and long range. This was a known problem and our annual preventative schedule was to check the two sets of brushes. I can recall on one of these vessels had both sets fail with minutes of each other. As for DC motor and gear box replacement was also done by our group of Ship Electronic Workshop electronic technicians.
Thank you for your wonderful comment. I will be uploading more so do not forget to hit that bell button and share it with your friends. Next week is the GPS loss of position alarm.
Please include safety information like turning off the Radar before you go to check (high microwave radiation risk). Also about safety harness - most of the radars are in locations were you need harness. Stay safe and keep up the good work!
One look at that commutator suggests that the motor has had enough. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the fan seems to be making rattling noises and may not be spinning at the correct speed (unless it's playing with the camera shutter).
I note only ONE comment about the condition of the commutator. It is CONCAVE in shape. Uneven wear of the brushes , and the state of the commutator tells me the motor requires replacing ASAP. Note also the amount of "backlash" between the motor drive pinion and the main gear. That tells me the bearings in the final drive of the scanner are worn out. Better order an exchange scanner unit, again ASAP.
Yes and it was placed in my initial report. I recommended to land the whole scanner for replacement. Company agreed. It was not mentioned in the video as we do not have spare motor onboard hence could not make a detail video on it. So far radar is still running but then of course will wait for the vessel to get alongside in Vancouver for the replacement of the scanner.
I'm surprised you don't change the entire motor with the extreme wear on the commbars it has, that's beyond a groove it's a ditch and several bars seems shorted together
@@leckyjake Good Afternoon Mr. Jake pleasure to greeting you in this opportunity. YOU ONLY HAVE TO MAKE AN EXTERNAL RADIO SERVICE ORDER in your Management system because they have to issue a certificate which say the equipment is working properly. In this case your obligation is diagnosis only
Same problem here... Prior to shutdown, intermittent muna yung display pawala wala hanggang matuluyan na. Pero once start mo may makikita ka pa pero malabo na until namatay na sya
Don’t those brushes have an end of life indicator in them when they get worn out? That commutator that the brushes ride on looks very worn though, doesn’t look like there is enough material left to undercut the segments so there is no bridging between them. But it was a good call, because it links like if they have not bridged between them yet, it would not be much time before they would at that point. And with a motor that small, I imagine it makes better sense to just replace it, since the gears are also worn, like you pointed out as well.
There is a PMS for every period of time but sometimes due to some instances like the weather, the position of the vessel and some factors that cannot be done it is being postponed. The motor was also replaced during the fixing of the gears. Thank you so much
@@leckyjake totally understandable. Much more to have to keep up with of higher priority in the operation of a ship that size. Was just wondering, recently her in the United States, we have learned that in many ports here, there is a big worker shortage, and some ships like yours are waving to wait anchored for as long as three to four weeks to be unloaded. Are you finding the same problem in other ports around the world that your ship visits?
That commutator needs to be turned on a lathe or it will keep destroying brushes! And, yes, the commutator needs replacing, but for now. A quick turn on lathe. Perhaps the machine shop can make a fixture that can turn or grind the commutator in place while a vacuum catches the chips. Look into a replacement motor with a brushless motor and driver. That should provide better reliability in the future.

You didn't explain each part in detail. Like 1) which kind of motor either AC or DC? and how we will know/check the condition of carbon brushes 2) how to change magnetron's? Why we will change? and which kind of magnetron's using and their safety precaution during changing. 3) parts of the radar explain in details during Corrective maintenance. Will be be waiting for the next video. Thank you
Each 10.000 hour of service the magnetron have to be replaced even so whether is working properly. After be replaced the new magnetron it has to be energized the computer during 4 hour to get preheating initial without start the scanner and graphic

Thank you brother, this was very helpful. I'm going on my first assignment as a EO next month and this was very much needed. Thanks again stay safe!!
I've never seen a motor commutator as worn as that one..
Great job, that commutator was very worn. You did well not dropping those plastic brush caps.
Also the motor commutator looks like almost worn-out, better request also new motor and change it.
