I have essentially no experience with pool, and this is fascinating. The basic physics is clear, but the stop shot puzzled me. But I see now that a position slightly higher than that of the backspin results in less backspin. But to calculate it as finely as this guy does is truly impressive!

Well no worries... You aren't. You need practice and lots of it until you don't have to think about these. Knowing them is step one. Getting familiar with the feel of them and the table you are on is key. Just remember there are as many angles and variations as there are atoms on the surface of those balls. And every contact creates a new flat point that will change it the next time.

Cross-table shots usually have enough time for the balls spin to slow enough, it starts to roll in the normal direction and just behaves like a normal shot. If I do put back spin English on a shot, I usually offset it slightly off center so it's less likely to just follow the other ball into the hole. And topspin English is never used on straight on shots bc the cue will just follow the ball, but it's useful for a combo shot off of another ball so the cue rolls clear of the others
I may not own a pool table, but the physics are thankfully accurate enough in vrchat that I can beat people by combinine irl strats I learn in these videos
I love pool. I can tell you if you learn your basics it’s literally constant progression afterwards. You will never stop seeing progress in your game if you play consistently. If you’ve never gave the game a look, you definitely should.
Pool is fun in theory. In practice it's impossible to find a table that's level, let alone pool cues that haven't been abused. None of these techniques actually work on the tables that amateurs have access to. Makes me wonder how people enter the hobby at all.
You buy your own stick and in theory you aren’t playing another player you’re playing the table it’s like saying some tricks people do on a football field won’t work on a different type of field
Always remember the linear momentum gets transferred but the rolling/angular momentum doesn't. So which ever direction the ball is rolling it would stop for a moment transfer it linear motion to the other ball but then starts rolling in the direction of the spin.
This small thing has so much variation and details i didn't knew till now. This really tell us there are many things which we think are simple but actually have many variation,details and complexities.
Watch snooker. Great way to learn your way around a table. Okay there's more balls and the rules are different. But you'll get my point if you watch videos like the best shots in snooker. There's some that just shouldn't make sense with how perfect some players can get positioning for their next shot.
I've never seen that ball before. That's so cool! I'm sure if I had one I could practice and get better at my game with it. Not that I play that often, but having that I can see myself increase winnings for sure.
@J Zim it helped me. Everyone might not be as athletically or spatially inclined as you. It has a line up the middle too to help you shoot straighter. It pays for itself. I use it on empty tables and don't have to pay for the table time. 😉

This ball can teach a beginner the miscue limit, how much bottom is needed for a stun shot, how left or right English throws the object ball, etc. This is also a great training tool to practice hitting center ball. You hit it, see where you left your chalk mark, and bam, instant feedback. Just be ause you can knock a few balls around with your drunk buddies doesn't mean you're the almighty pool God. You probably count beat me even if I played one handed.

That's an awesome skill your grandpa taught you. I bet those are cherished memories. I use to work a traveling construction job. Every night, we'd all hang out in the local bar playing pool and darts. I got pretty good (not great. I wasn't consistent.). The confidence you feel completely running a table is an amazing feeling.
Im always interested in which shot people have more control over the cue...draw or follow? Personally i have more control over the cue using draw. Im talking about all things being equal, which would you prefer to "have to use"...i asked this question in a weird way so i hope people understand what im really asking
A draw shot is just cool. I love doing it, I love working on my draw stroke and therefore I also prefer using draw to get position in a match. I feel like I know the path of the cueball better. I just more used to stunning the cueball along the tangent line or let it go back a little or more. BUT I'm working on that...because very often there's a much easier solution when just rolling the ball and following the natural path. I want to become better at knowing and using those easier solutions.
*Fun Fact:* In Pool, this (hitting the cue ball with intended specific spin) is called the "English" ...in Snooker its just called hitting the cue ball 😂
Veteran pool player here. This is essential in being a good pool player. Word of advice to people that want to try this. You will fail miserably without the right tip on the cue. If you want to practice I would suggest spending $50-$75 on your own pool cue and going to a pool hall. Bar pool cues are often heavily worn. Also make sure to chalk your tip after every hit.

Man i wish i have youtube when i was a kid. I got decent at pool without ever knowing these (what seems like it should be basic pool knowladge) tips... Had i known these, I'd been safe from many of my flaws. I just had no guidance. I grew up in a bar, and always for some reason was around a pool table, but just never got the chance to meet someone with real talent for the game. I still was able to beat the bar owner at age 9, and stopped playing around the start of highschool. Man i wish i knew these tips, i can't play even decently anymore. 😆

I, as a German (guess I didn't understand the context): "Idk maybe vodka gorbatschow or a blue lagoon shot..."
So basically:
Top: follow the ball
Bottom: back away
Center: stop after hitting
Corners: go in that direction after hitting the ball
Stop shot you have to hit it a bit below the centee

Man i wish i have youtube when i was a kid. I got decent at pool without ever knowing these (what seems like it should be basic pool knowladge) tips... Had i known these, I'd been safe from many of my flaws. I just had no guidance. I grew up in a bar, and always for some reason was around a pool table, but just never got the chance to meet someone with real talent for the game. I still was able to beat the bar owner at age 9, and stopped playing around the start of highschool. Man i wish i knew these tips, i can't play even decently anymore. 😆
