make sure to always brake to a complete stop before shifting into another gear, going between neutral to drive, drive to 2, 2 to 1 etc. The volvo manual says never to shift into another gear while moving as it wears out the transmission prematurely. Same reason you shouldn't shift into reverse while moving even from a crawl.
I know you said the fluid is fine, but I would do a flush. Drain the pan and refill the same amount. Disconnect the return line at the radiator, attach a clear hose and run in to a jug/bucket. Start the car and run the transmission through the gears until the transmission pumps out a quart of fluid. Shut the car off, add a quart to the transmission and repeat as before. Should take about 10-12 quarts till the fluid runs clear from the hose. Button everything up and add a bottle of Lubegard ATF additive (red bottle), check the final fluid level and test. Have a look at brickboard.com in the 700/900 FAQ’s, they all use the same AW-70 transmission.
Did you fill the transmission with ATF Dexron 2 / 3? Any other and the transmission is blown. ZF is the "not the best" tramsmission. AW 71 is the one you want to have.
Your gearbox is going out, best to change it to another used or refurbished unit. Was told that the zf gearbox isn’t as good as the Aisin that they started using on the 940, and even those wear out after a certain mileage
in my case i have the same issue with reverse and high revs, I'm starting with replacing the kickdown cable, and then going from there. I am going to look into replacement trans parts if that doesn't help. But I have shifting issues in all gears, which is from the kickdown cable being wayyy to loose.
It could be the transmission. 1st gear definitely sounds sketchy. The not moving in reverse seems more like a binding issues with the driveline It could be a number of things that causes the driveline to bind: -Rear axle being out of alignment (bad bushings or even stiffer poly bushings can put the rear axle of alignment) This causes tension in the driveshaft as it has to overcome the awkward angle to get the car moving. One thing that can help fix this is an adjustable panhard bar to correct the rear axle, also new bushings all around in the rear axle would be a good idea too. -Bad transmission mount or motor mounts (again causing a weird angle) -Bad U-Joints (If they're stuck then the drive shaft has to overcome the seized u-joint) -Bad Center Carrier Bearing or Cracked Bushing (This would cause the driveshaft to bind when spinning and mess up the angle) -Worn Differential (Unlikely) -Worn Rear Axle Bearings (Unlikely) -Stuck brake caliper or shoes (Would probably feel this in drive as well though) I had a very similar issue where I my 240 wouldn't move when switching between either drive or reverse, but giving it a little gas would clunk it into place and start moving. I added a panhard bar and it centered my axle closer to stock (I have all poly bushings in the rear) and it completely fixed my binding issue. Hope that helps!

I'm having these same issues .. in the beginning I changed the fluid which was good because it was dark. But I noticed that the stick is hard to tell if it was clean. So I had no issues with it till one night I couldn't get the car to move I had to give it gas to move. And I checked it and it was full .. Im driving my 01 VW beetle that has a manual that was with me for a while,. I love the beetle but I'm trying to keep that in my collection which is the Harley Quinn edition Which I wish I found a manual transmission for the Volvo and this nightmare would stop.. It wouldn't be a bad idea to put a little tiny transmission cooler and the center where the fan is facing to help cool that thing down an additional one
Yes I’ve put another transmission it it a while ago. I’ve just been too busy with a full time job to make an update video. I hope to make a new video soon
They have a overdrive bypass kit that's like 30 bucks or $35 at ipd Volvo ATS real and expensive to install don't let nobody shovel know shit your way they have a UA-cam video on how to install that it's basically a shield with gaskets and it goes on the top part of your transmission pan under the car on the driver side that's real fast and simple beer to 12 mm bolts really easy
I’ve know about these failures but could it really be causing reverse and other gears other than overdrive to not work? Also would that maybe explain the grinding noises as well?
I would just take it into a shop that’s what I got planned my Volvo 240 1986 won’t give me power or even go into first gear I can go into reverse no problem but drive fuck my Engine sounds bad
There's a lot of shady mechanics out there that come off like an angel of Light and they just waiting to get into your bank account follow the steps that I gave you and that thing will run like a champ
In my (extremely) amateur opinion, it may need a rebuild (or replacement, since AW70’s are a dime a dozen), but I’d suggest trying some Lucas Transmission fix in it, and see if that helps the slipping.
@@kurtti1043 I have other 240s that are more worth swapping.
