      Bonjour depuis que je me suis installé il y a 6 ans, j'ai planté quelques palmiers.... Chaque année j'en rajoute.
      J'ai fait en sorte de ne pas prendre trop de risques.
      A part mon butia capitata, mon brahema armata mes autres palmiers sont moins sensibles au froid.
      (26 petits palmiers)
      Je pense malheureusement avoir perdu un petit jubea chilensis qui n'était pas au mieux de sa forme avant les gels successifs de - 7 à - 9.
      Je l'avais simplement couvert pour éviter qu'il ne prennent trop d'eau sur le coeur mais cela n'a pas suffit.
      Mon deuxième qui est plus âgé n'a subi aucun dégât.
      Donc oui la résistance au froid dépend déjà de la santé du palmier.
      Je suis extrêmement admiratif de l'énergie que vous déployez.
      A toute la logistique pour assurer la pérennité de vos palmiers.
      A tout ce travail et cette ingéniosité déployée.
      Bravo de pouvoir assurer ce spectacle annuel et d'avoir réussi à créer ce dépaysement.
      Cela permet chaque jour de pouvoir rêver et de s'imaginer au bout du monde.
      J'essaie à mon petit niveau de créer une ambiance tropicale, une ambiance de vacances, une ambiance d' évasion.
      L'émerveillement lorsque l'on regarde par la fenêtre, lorsque l'on sort dans son jardin.
      Pour cela il faut aussi être patient et il faut le dire espérer ne plus subir de grosses vagues de froid.

      @@jocos251 Wow quel joli message, merci beaucoup pour ça 🙏😊
      Je suis entièrement d'accord avec toi, c'est aussi ma raison et mon amour pour cette passion. C'est en effet merveilleux de pouvoir à chaque fois entrer dans son propre jardin et s'imaginer dans un endroit différent du monde. Je te comprends complètement. Petit ou grand, peu importe.
      Je suis vraiment désolé d'entendre parler de votre petit Jubaea. La santé et la taille des palmiers sont en effet aussi un facteur, oui. J'espère que vous pourrez profiter de vos palmiers pendant de nombreuses années. 😁
      Vous me rendez maintenant curieux de connaître votre palmeraie. Est-il possible d'en voir des photos ou des vidéos quelque part ?
      C'est également très agréable d'apprendre que vous appréciez également mes vidéos. C'est devenu un deuxième hobby, j'apprécie réaliser des vidéos et partager ma passion avec d'autres passionnés. Il faut en effet du travail pour que mes palmiers durent bien tout l'hiver, oui. Mais ce que je reçois en retour l'été me fait vite oublier tout ce travail acharné 😉
      Bonne chance et beaucoup de salutations de Belgique,
      Dimitri

      But the challenge of growing palm trees here and overwintering is also the fun part of this passion. Because it is very unique here in Belgium. If you live in a tropical country, palm trees are self-evident. They may still be great, but that's something else.

    Another great video, your palms are gorgeous and you take great care of them I’m in the south of England and my east facing garden regularly sees temperatures of -7c. So, I’ve been introducing large (5ft-7ft) tropical style trees e.g. Photinia to try and create a microclimate to retain some heat during the winter months. My palms are not large, I do protect them, but have also lost a few, (a 5ft Butia and a 4ft Edulis, not to mention several Cordylines in the winter of 2022). Brexit has made it really difficult and more expensive to get palms into the UK.
    On the plus side, I’ve just successfully overwintered a 7ft Queen Palm in the ground, without heat, using some of the techniques you shared in one of your previous videos. Thank you so much! I’m interested in your heating techniques. The guys in the US use C9 lights which you can’t get in the UK and most of Europe. What are you using and is it costly? Also, is your garden south facing?
    ❤👍

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you Maxine 😊
      Smart to create a kind of microclimate with those large trees. That certainly helps. Many little things can make the difference. Sun or no sun in winter is also a thing that makes a big difference for many palms. Sorry to hear of your losses. You may have already seen it in my videos, but unfortunately I also have losses sometimes. Things don't always go the way you want and sometimes you take too many risks with all the consequences that entails. The most important thing is that we learn from the mistakes we make. After 15 years, I'm still learning a lot.
      And yes, Brexit hasn't made it easier. Also for us if we want to buy something in the U.K. 🤷‍♂
      Very nice to hear that you managed to overwinter a Queen palm in open ground. I also had it in the open ground for 4 years and was able to overwinter reasonably well. But I dug up and potted my Queenpalm again at the end of 2022. It was not exposed to enough sun, which meant it barely grew due to insufficient soil heat. It grew with difficulty 1 full leaf per year. So that's of no use to you. This is of course also because it is a tropical species that needs a lot of heat to grow well. Are you not bothered by the fact that it grows very slowly?
      My heating techniques are fairly easy, but therefore perhaps not ideal. I use electric fan heaters. They actually consume a lot of electricity. But they do work well. That's why I had a lot of damage in the winter 2022-2023. Then energy prices were extremely high here (Gas prices/Russia). I did not heat several palm trees for that reason. I regretted that a lot afterwards, because it caused much more damage than I expected.🤷‍♂
      In an older video of mine you can see my heating. Check this video at 03:07 -> ua-cam.com/video/jh7Xwm9frDI/v-deo.htmlsi=ktKhzLd2zEF6x9kr
      And yes, many people in the US do indeed use those C-9 lamps. A good solution for us are the old light hoses. But it's not easy to find them these days. Now all rope lights have LED lights, which do not get hot. You need the old one with halogen lights. I still have some of those and still use them. It is an easy solution for small plants and as an emergency solution in certain cases. Of course it is not ideal because it is only local heating. And in extreme frost it no longer helps enough.
      My garden is located on the west.
      Many greetings from Belgium
      Dimi

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  2 місяці тому

      Hi Mike, thank you very much for your compliments.
      I use fan heaters in the boxes. It is not the most energy efficient solution, but they are easy to use. There is a built-in thermostat with frost setting, and they also provide air movement which is very important in our very humid winters here...
      Also take a look at this old video of mine, it will become more clear. At 03:07 in that old video, you can also see the fan heaters. ua-cam.com/video/jh7Xwm9frDI/v-deo.htmlsi=VOK1dvsSO61t57rM
      The boxes must remain open at all times for good ventilation. So there are always panels removed at the bottom and top. Everything is only closed during moderate/severe frost.

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  2 місяці тому +2

      Hi Deyu, I don't know yet what I will do if the Phoenix becomes too high/big. Maybe I'll make the box a little higher again...
      I'm going to try to fold the leaves against the roof for as long as possible...
      And if it really is no longer possible, then my very last option is to partially prune the leaves or leave them partially unprotected... I don't know yet.
      At that moment I will see for myself what my possible options will be...🤷‍♂️
      Due to the thick trunk and leaf crown, the Phoenix can now withstand frost a little better/longer. But it is certainly not the case that the older it gets, the better it can withstand frost. If I leave it unprotected here for two winters in a row, it will be dead anyway...
      Unless there are very weak winters.

      I always leave my Musa basjoo and my Musa sikkimensis red tiger unprotected. The rhizomes in the ground are mature, so they grow to over 3m every year. Even if they freeze completely.

      Hi, sorry to hear.
      Your palm has frost damage from last winter. It sounds like your palm will recover. But that may take some time. So you will have to be patient for a few more weeks.
      You can always contact me on Facebook via messenger. You can send me photos there and I can analyze it better if you want. But you won't be able to do anything other than wait...
      In any case, leave every leaf that still has some green on the palm.
      Greetings Dimi

    Bonjour, j'ai planté un Butia Capitata le printemps passé, cet hiver il avait un abris pour la pluie ainsi qu'un voile. Est ce que je devrai le protéger chaque année ou avec l'âge il pourra résister à nos hiver humide? (je suis sur Namur) Merci

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  3 місяці тому

      Salut, oui le Butia devra bel et bien vous protéger chaque hiver. Et même se réchauffer en cas de fortes gelées. Certainement des plus petits. Les gros spécimens sains peuvent le tolérer un peu mieux en raison de l’épaisseur du tronc. Pourtant, ils ne peuvent pas survivre à notre hiver froid et humide sans protection à chaque fois. Cela peut réussir une fois avec beaucoup de dégâts, mais le palmier recevra le coup final l'hiver suivant. C’est un choix conscient que chacun doit faire avant de planter des palmiers en pleine terre. Si vous ne souhaitez pas les protéger, vous devez les conserver dans un pot afin de pouvoir les déplacer chaque hiver sans gel.
      Bonne chance.

    Ik heb een Washingtonia robusta geplanteerd en nú zijn ze 13 maanden oud! Als ik hun buiten gaat planten, zullen zij het Nederlandse winter overleven? Of moet ik hun beschermen?

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  3 місяці тому

      Hoi, Washingtonia robusta moet je in Nederland zeker goed beschermen en ook verwarmen. Deze palmboom krijgt al hevige bladschade bij -4°C, -5°C kan zelfs al dodelijk zijn. Zeker bij kleine exemplaren.

    At which temperature (inside the house) do you heat your cyca revoluta ?

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  4 місяці тому +1

      I have to heat a lot, so I try to delay heating some things.
      The Cycas is one of them. But like last winter, -7°C outside the box is about the limit from which I would heat inside de box. I haven't done it now, but I have been very hesitant about doing it. I took a big risk... The sun on the box during the day was the deciding factor. That makes a big difference.

    • @MrMusclefriend
      @MrMusclefriend 4 місяці тому +1

      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden I Started heating at -2°C this year(inside the box). But my Cyca is very small/young. I try to figure out how low I can go to save money/energy. I only measure temperature inside my box.

    • @MrMusclefriend
      @MrMusclefriend 4 місяці тому +1

      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden a few times I tried candles and it works for the small box. But the box is actually just 1m³

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  4 місяці тому +1

      @@MrMusclefriend Yes, you do indeed have to be much more careful with small specimens. I also measure the temperature in the boxes, but unfortunately I cannot do that in all boxes. But I know that the difference inside & outside is about 1.5°C approximately. I would certainly not let Cycas revoluta go lower than -4 to -5°C. Candles are indeed also a good solution in small boxes. Of course, pay close attention to the risk of fire.👍

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  4 місяці тому

      @@MrMusclefriend And as I said in the video, I also wrapped the Cycas extra well with many winter blankets inside the box during those coldest days/nights.

      Moving to a warmer climate is not as easy as said. And the challenge of growing these palms here in Belgium is the fun part of this passion. It is very unique here, in tropical countries it is a normal thing.
