  • The 6Pdr gun was the primary anti-tank weapon of the British army during World War 2, and was often towed and supported by a Bren Gun Carrier light armoured vehicle.
Join me in this video as I build and review the Airfix 6Pdr Gun and Bren Gun Carrier 1/76 Scale Plastic Model Kit which is featured in the Vintage Classics range.

My Great Grandfather was in the 51st highland light infantry during the Battle for France and Dunkirk, and He was a Gunner on this gun, great vid and i learnt alot about how to correctly assemble it, which helped when i built it, 🙏 thank you

Great build! I liked how you told the history of the carrier and gun during the build, instead of having silence or music like other UA-cam videos have. You did a good job painting the figures, they look very realistic for 1/76 scale. I also liked your way of making an economical display base, it would also be good for displaying a WW I biplane on. Lastly, I agree with the other person who suggested that you build the Airfix 1/72 airborne Jeep...that would be cool. Keep up the good work.

This kit was the second ever model I built, about 50 years ago. Also the first one I completed fully and painted. I still have it, somewhere in my model room. These old kits are selling for ridiculously high prices, here in New Zealand. Often selling for 2 to 2 1/2 times the price on the kit you have!

Despite its age I think the kit is still good and accurate. There are many versions of the Universal Carrier that can be made from the Airfix model with a little scratch building. I would like to see you make the Airfix German Reconnaissance Set as this has always been a favorite of mine. Thanks for making this review and you did a great job on the models and diorama.

The lack of a Bren gun would not be unusual for a vehicle in this role. Here, it's basically a light gun tractor.
The carrier is one of those vehicles that period pictures show crammed full of stuff, or with field telephone cable drums on the back - they laid cables like this in the desert campaign. They were even used in an ill fated mine clearance system called 'Conger': a Universal carrier with it's engine removed, was towed behind a Churchill AVRE (Armoured Vehicle, Royal Engineers), fitted with a rocket launching tripod - in photos, it looks rather like a grumpy child being dragged by it's mum through Asda - and the idea was that, coming to an invasion beach minefield, a rocket would be fired from the carrier, dragging behind it about 100 yards of rubber firehose. This would land across the narrow minefield, and then, from the AVRE, an explosive mixture based on nitro glycerine would be pumped into the hose, and detonated remotely from the tank. The shockwave created would set off the mines. It was tested, and was a spectacular failure. Add to that, the tank crews who did not fancy driving a suspiciously dangerous looking tank, dragging something behind it, into heavy enemy fire, what with the tank carrying a lot of nitro glycerine and all. It was unceremoniously swept into a dark corner and forgotten.

This was one of my first afv builds, it was a little nice vehicle sadly the figures were a little too stiff for my taste. The diorama is well done and lovely. Now there's the PSC model which is incredibile and has a lot of options. The Luftwaffe used a lot of captured carriers with a 37mm gun in France for airport surveillamce

As we had to leave all the big stuff in Dunkirk I don't think there was any option but introducing a new type - also being smaller it probably used less material to manufacture - vital when we had limited supplies.

  • @jerry2357

Technically, this carrier is a Universal Carrier, although it was commonly known as a Bren Carrier. The original Bren carrier, of which only a few were made before the start of the war, had a cut-down body compared with the later Universal Carrier. The Universal Carrier was introduced in 1940.
From what I've read, the larger Loyd Carrier was more commonly used to tow the 6 pounder from Normandy onwards.
I made one of these kits when I was a teenager in the 1970s, and ISTR that the crew figures were similar to, if not exactly the same as, some of the crew from the Airfix 25 pounder field gun set.

Applying tube cement to the parts straight from the tube is holding a hostage to fortune, though. It's so easy to get an uncontrollable spurt that goes all over the place. Easier with this stuff to spurt it over a piece of scrap plastic and then transfer it with the end of a cocktail stick? Or else get a better glue, with a needle applicator?

My own experience of this kit is good. The gun crew are too "clean" and posed so that they might as well be on parade in London to do a 21-gun salute for royalty - too parade-ground. I can't imagine the gun commander standing to attention like that if a panzer was bearing down on them, for instance. Some hints for improvement - to the kit, I mean, not your build style. The thickness of the "box" is out of scale and obvious on the armour of the carrier (in scale it'd be approaching the thickness of armour on a Tiger Tank) - I have thinned this down to something like true scale on builds. Also, the size and utility of the gun lends itself to conversion - I was able to rebuild the 6pndr as a wargames-quality take on the Russian 57mm anti-tank gun. (longer barrel and new gunshield and it worked, so long as nobody looked too closely at the wheels).
Also, take a close look at the top of the gunshield on the 6pndr. Viewed from above and behind, you can see the wavy line it takes, recessed in behind the straight appearance you see from in front. I don't think this is accidental: if you file and smooth it down to the shape of the wave, this is the 6pndr gunshield as seen on versions used in North Africa and Italy. This makes for an interesting conversion/alternative build in its own right!
