As a 10 year old kid I absolutely adored these Matchbox kits with the little diorama I could use with my Airfix and Matchbox soldiers, I guess we have to remember who these kits were aimed at , the kids, and they did a great job they got me started in the scale model hobby and 40 years later I am still going. I wish they were still available, Id love to buy them all again.
If that isn’t one of the best finished examples of that kit in existence - I’d be surprised. Your painting techniques are masterful. Such a pleasure to watch. Thank you
@@GregsModels I have several of these old matchbox kits(bought as a job lot years ago)unfortunately the instructions are missing is there anywhere I can get replacements
The best part about this video for me (other than the fantastic finish of course) is that you took on an old kit and not some mega expensive, ultra modern, PE festooned, billion part kit. This is real modelling, making a decent model with what comes in the box or what is laying around the house, not ordering and paying for PE or resin replacement parts.
I was just cleaning out a house my dad left us. We all use to go there in the summer and weekends. While going through some books I found this kit mixed in. I wasn't a box of gold, but it was almost as good, made me feel like a kid for a while. I always liked the kit and must have built more than I can remember 😊😢😮😢😢
A touch of nostalgia. I did this kit when I was around 10 when it was released the first time. Matchbox was the only brand I knew in my small town where kits were sold in the single toys shop. I painted all my kits with Humbrol glossy colors only because there was nothing else. It took me a while to understand what was a matt color and to buy my first one. Then, 2-3 years after, this shop proposed the Monogram P61 Black Widow. It took me mostly a year to get the money to buy it. Scissors, 3M Scotch glue in tube, 3 brushes, a cup of white spirit and my mother nail files, that was my setup. No filler, no masking, no nothing. Thank you for this souvenir.
Another fantastically evocative project, Greg! Brought memories flooding back. The diorama bases were what attracted me to these kits as a kid and they only required going without school dinners for a few days to save up for one from John Menzies.
I love this old Matchbox kits! Memories back to the early 1970s as I was a young boy buying such kits for less money just to build them and have fun :)
Lovely work! I've just come across your channel. It's tough working in this small scale. Out-of-the-bottle paint can easily overpower the detail but you've provided a clinic in using acrylic washes. Bravo! In fact, I don't think you've added enough colour and definition to the base, though I admit that weather and neglect would have toned everything down. The heavy Chev doesn't have enough gear in back, though much would be covered by a tarp. And there is almost no personal gear at all and these troopers' mission would be weeks long. Congratulations on bringing out the best this kit could offer.
Love this one, Greg! I have such fond memories of those old Matchbox kits, and you've really done this one justice! Glad you decided to use the base and the end result keeps the focus on the vehicles. Great work!
Really great build Greg just showing how you can have fun with these old kits come to life with your eye for color washes thank you for sharing great work jon
Mate, this kit is utterly unobtainium in 2023. I made it as a kid, it was a gem. One of the Matchbox die cast car catalogues had a spread depicting the LRDG set alongside the Diamond T tank transporter, carrying a Honey. It was that image that resulted in my departing die cast cars and getting into model making.
I do like a retro kit. I recently finished an Aurora guillotine I found partly built on eBay. Took me right back - I can still hear my Nan saying “what do you want to buy that horrible thing for?’ 😊 Anyway another terrific Saturday morning model build - thanks Greg.

Nice build of a classic. I used to love the matchbox kits as they were so cheap. Some were absolute garbage, but they offered some unique options and made a change from the usual airfix or reell kits which were usually mostly what the local model shops had. I had 4 or 5 shops to choose from in the late 80s and 90s, how different things are now! These were popular along with the airfix 1/76 kits for railway modellers (hence why they were not 1/72, though the scale was not often consistent and they were typically marketed as oo/ho, which is a rather big difference as oo is not actually a scale, but the track gauge for 4mm/ft 1/76, ho on the other hand is both a scale and gauge and 3.5mm/ft 1/87) Some of kits would be useful today on ww2 era and 50s era model railways. Of course good on their own in a diorama too.
This brings back memories! When i was about 10 (40 years ago!) my Dad used to get me a 1/76 Matchbox armour kit every Saturday from the model shop next to his work place. I'd build it on a sunday afternoon.

Matchbox kits were my entry into the hobby as a 8-9 year old. I tried unsuccessfully to get my mother to buy me one of their aircraft kits until I picked up a very bad dose of tonsillitis that kept me off school for over a week. “Winterbottoms” our local newsagent stocked Matchbox and Airfix kits and the paints etc and when she was heading into the village for some groceries I mentioned that this weeks copy of ‘Whizzer & Chips’ might be in, and I hinted about a kit “to give me something to do”. Way back in the day when Airfix was king (especially for the pocket money modeller) Matchbox brought a breath of fresh air to the hobby, good simple kits and a variety of “different /unusual” subjects. Thanks for an interesting build.
It's a lovely build I built most of the matchbox military kits back in the day, and it's great seeing you revisit them. They did a nice German half track towing a gun with a motorbike and diorama
Nice build and took me right back. I always preferred matchbox to airfix when I was a kid as the moulding seemed better and parts fitted well. I also liked the dioramas as didn’t want to spend the extra cash on building from scratch
Do please make more of these wonderful 1/72 and 1/76 scale vehicles and AFVs! My patience and storage space no longer stretches to larger scales and aircraft, and the smaller vehicles are so much quicker to make!
That's a real beauty! 👍 Back when I was a youngster, when these Matchbox kits first came out they were almost a revelation over the 'usual' Airfix, Revell, and Frog kits. The two or three colour plastic was always a nice touch if you didn't want to paint it, and the mini diorama bases with their AFVs were fantastic; they really gave the model some 'life', rather than just a small tank sat on a plain shelf...! 😉 You've done a great job with this one..... ☝ 🙂
I've build one of those in early 90, in the sea of rubbishness this kit was amazing, detalis where superb. Thats the only Matchbox kit I liked ;-) I still have the Jeep to thiss day, storred in a matchbox.
When I was a soldier, 1974 - 98, kit bags (sausage bags as we called them) were always laid flat; it would never have stayed standing as illustrated in the kit.
I am getting back into the hobby after more than 40 years away. The washes part was very interesting to me. We used to do horrible clunky painting and hope for the best but lost so much detail in the process. Thin is king. Thanks for sharing.
It never ceases to amaze me how skillful painting can transform pieces of plastic into realistic looking metal, wood, and other materials. The color of the diorama base is a bit too light, IMHO, but then again it helps make the models pop up more. I've always had a soft spot for Matchbox kits. I've never actually built any of them, though. I was just a wee little kid during their heydays (this particular one is only slightly younger than I am!), and they weren't generally available in my little corner of the world. Great job, please give us more!
I've picked up more techniques from you than all the other builders combined, dunno why. While I don't enjoy painting and avoid weathering like the plague,it's assembling that I love, I can see how it can be done without too much fuss or too much time spent for a great result still. Another ASMR gem👋
That's a great job on this kit. It's nicely detailed the extra fixes add to the model. For its age it's a nice mini diarama. Nicely done. I built this a decade ago. Unfortunately over the years it was damaged and now it's in pieces somewhere amongst my mess. Shame. Well done model. Top marks.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️
Brilliant work. You brought back memories since this was the first kit I ever made at 12 years of age, although not as impeccable as yours. Cutting with a box cutter and using UHU glue didnt help. Thank you!
This does bring back memories for me. I never built any Matchbox kits when I was younger but do remember seeing them on the shelves. Airfix and Frog kits were the ones I went for and never tried Matchbox until much later in the form of the DE Havilland Sea Venom. Look forward to seeing your next build.
Great job Greg , brings back memories of this kit when it came . You made a fantastic job of the base , just the right colour tones . Looking forward till the next build .
Always enjoy your builds Greg. Sometimes for the subjects, sometimess for the nostalgia, but the result is always excellent. Look forward to the next build.
Absolutely brilliant work Greg! Grew up with Matchbox in Sweden, together with Airfix and others.... Some time ago, I bought a couple old catalogues to flick through on those rainy days....talk about flashbacks to more innocent times! I sometimes wonder, where Matchbox would've been today, had they still been around! Keep that excellent work and those videos coming!
Lovely build again Greg. Great to see the old Matchbox kits getting a moment in the sun. I always preferred them to late 70s/early 80s Airfix. There was a much wider range of subjects. And the colours. I particularly remember a vivid two tone blue Buccaneer kit. It still showed through the paint after several coats...
That’s absolutely marvellous Greg. Very keen to have a crack at one of these myself now. I really like the use of washes to create colour, it works so well. Great to see you back mate and thank you for a great channel Les
great result from a nice little kit that brings back good memories. Always wanted to see some one with your skill set do an upscaled version of this in a dio. Stu
Superb work on the LRRP diorama kit. I love Matchbox armor kits. You always got extras ......like figures, equipment and cool bases. Great paintwork on the vehicles and figures. I think the base is a little underwhelming. A darker wash on it might unify everything. Keep up the super work. Bill
Such an iconic Matchbox kit. First time I build it was really enjoyable. It always surprised me that they could manufacture both detailed precise parts and crude oversized chunky bits. Still a wonderful youth memory where my love for modeling started ✨👍✨
Nicely done Greg on an older kit. Matchbix Jeep is so much better than the newer Academy Jeep that came with the F51 fighter kit. And the accessories plus figures make the diorama. Keep posting. Priorities!
Wow the washes are nice and subtle. Very well done. And I miss these kits. Why don't modern companies make kits like this anymore. It's these Matchbox kits that got me into this hobby in the first place.

While I don't enjoy painting and avoid weathering like the plague,it's assembling that I love, I can see how it can be done without too much fuss or too much time spent for a great result still.
Another ASMR gem👋
Thank you👍
That's a great job on this kit.
Thank you!
Many thanks!
This does bring back memories for me. I never built any Matchbox kits when I was younger but do remember seeing them on the shelves. Airfix and Frog kits were the ones I went for and never tried Matchbox until much later in the form of the DE Havilland Sea Venom. Look forward to seeing your next build.
That is a superb kit. I bought the 1/32 scale Revel LRDG kit as some time back as it looked good. But its BIG so I'll need to detail it a lot.👍
Brilliantly done in the build and the painting is brilliant
Will do👍
Revell bought the molds.. 😮
Love watching your work Greg, fantastic as always.😃👍 Keep them coming!
Thanks 👍
Fantastic build. I look forward to your next build
For an oldie it certainly scrubs up really well....top job.
Brilliant. I have now watched this twice. Never tire of your builds some of the best and enjoyable around.
😂👍
That’s absolutely marvellous Greg. Very keen to have a crack at one of these myself now. I really like the use of washes to create colour, it works so well. Great to see you back mate and thank you for a great channel Les
great result from a nice little kit that brings back good memories. Always wanted to see some one with your skill set do an upscaled version of this in a dio. Stu
Beautiful work Greg, what a fun build.
Very inspirational as always, Greg 👏
Fantastic. Let's also appreciate the artwork on the box and the instructions. 👍👍
👍
Superb work on the LRRP diorama kit. I love Matchbox armor kits. You always got extras ......like figures, equipment and cool bases. Great paintwork on the vehicles and figures. I think the base is a little underwhelming. A darker wash on it might unify everything. Keep up the super work.

Yes👍
I built this nice kit 25 years ago... Suddenly I feel old...
Weel done, I didn't make it as good as you !
Wonderful timing, I've just finished watching season one of Rogue Heroes.
You've done an amazing job.
Awesome! Thank you!
Such an iconic Matchbox kit. First time I build it was really enjoyable. It always surprised me that they could manufacture both detailed precise parts and crude oversized chunky bits. Still a wonderful youth memory where my love for modeling started ✨👍✨
We used to call the engraver The Old Trench Digger for the chunky panel lines on aircraft. 😂
I had this toy. And loved it.
Regards from Chile 🙂
Nicely done Greg on an older kit. Matchbix Jeep is so much better than the newer Academy Jeep that came with the F51 fighter kit. And the accessories plus figures make the diorama. Keep posting. Priorities!
Will do 😂
Wow the washes are nice and subtle. Very well done. And I miss these kits. Why don't modern companies make kits like this anymore. It's these Matchbox kits that got me into this hobby in the first place.
Supply dioramas with kits would be a great idea, especially military kits.
