Great piece of work. My dad was in the desert in WW2 and he would often (when he'd had a couple of pints that is) talk about his time out there. He told me about how those 'Chevvies' and sometimes Bedfords would arrive and how they were cut down ready for their desert excursions. He said there were never two alike and each one was customised by its crew. Another thing he said was sometimes some of them were painted pink! For me, as a lad, the Western Desert became my favourite subject to model. I still have from many years ago a 1/35th K2 ambulance that I scratch built mainly because nobody at the time manufactured a model of one. I built this matchbox kit several times. Thanks for the video and the memories.
If that isn’t one of the best finished examples of that kit in existence - I’d be surprised. Your painting techniques are masterful. Such a pleasure to watch. Thank you
@@GregsModels I have several of these old matchbox kits(bought as a job lot years ago)unfortunately the instructions are missing is there anywhere I can get replacements
I was just cleaning out a house my dad left us. We all use to go there in the summer and weekends. While going through some books I found this kit mixed in. I wasn't a box of gold, but it was almost as good, made me feel like a kid for a while. I always liked the kit and must have built more than I can remember 😊😢😮😢😢
Love this one, Greg! I have such fond memories of those old Matchbox kits, and you've really done this one justice! Glad you decided to use the base and the end result keeps the focus on the vehicles. Great work!
Really great build Greg just showing how you can have fun with these old kits come to life with your eye for color washes thank you for sharing great work jon
I love this old Matchbox kits! Memories back to the early 1970s as I was a young boy buying such kits for less money just to build them and have fun :)
Always love a new GMs build. You always tackle interesting projects, and produce such great results, and without going overboard with the techniques. Just some simple scratch building, here and there, and a bit of “making it up as you go along”, keeps me coming back for more. Thank you.
I bilt many Matcgbox kits over the years finding them to be a delightful experience. This particular kit I scored from our local rubbish tip shop for 50cents, bagged and intact although for some reason it was lacking instructions which I found online somewhere. A great little detailed kit.
I loved Matchbox models as a kid. Apparently someone has reboxed them but are charging incredible prices for them. That was a great tip on how to scratch a steering wheel. Thanks, Ian
Nice one Greg. I bloody-love this model. As a kid, I built several, thinking they would work well for Table-Top Wargaming. The finished vehicles look great. The build was a little more challenging than most. Matchbox never made it easy, as parts would break as one tried to get them free from the sprue. I still have all my Desert Warfare stuff, boxed away. 45 years have flown by.
I remember these kits from when I was a kid, I never made the LRDG one, however I remember making the tank transporter kit and really enjoyed it. Matchbox knew what kids imaginations were like and did a great job coming up with these mini diorama kits!
Brilliant work. You brought back memories since this was the first kit I ever made at 12 years of age, although not as impeccable as yours. Cutting with a box cutter and using UHU glue didnt help. Thank you!
This brings back memories! When i was about 10 (40 years ago!) my Dad used to get me a 1/76 Matchbox armour kit every Saturday from the model shop next to his work place. I'd build it on a sunday afternoon.
Awesome kit and build that brings back nice memories of the past. These Kits were made for beginners and kids. the technice you shown, especialy the many different washings, were far beyond the possibilities these modellers had.. 😃
Mate, this kit is utterly unobtainium in 2023. I made it as a kid, it was a gem. One of the Matchbox die cast car catalogues had a spread depicting the LRDG set alongside the Diamond T tank transporter, carrying a Honey. It was that image that resulted in my departing die cast cars and getting into model making.
It never ceases to amaze me how skillful painting can transform pieces of plastic into realistic looking metal, wood, and other materials. The color of the diorama base is a bit too light, IMHO, but then again it helps make the models pop up more. I've always had a soft spot for Matchbox kits. I've never actually built any of them, though. I was just a wee little kid during their heydays (this particular one is only slightly younger than I am!), and they weren't generally available in my little corner of the world. Great job, please give us more!
I remember building this kids back in the early 80’s. Going into town to buy it from WH Smith’s and thinking the mini diorama base was next level. Once build spending hours in the school hols setting it up in the flower beds of my parents garden and shooting dozens of rolls of 35mm film to try and capture my micro warriors world. Happy days indeed
Tout semble tellement facile ! Greg vous êtes un grand artiste ! Quand je pense que certains se croient obligés d'acheter le dernier modèle Tamiya pour réussir une maquette... Quelle leçon !
That's a real beauty! 👍 Back when I was a youngster, when these Matchbox kits first came out they were almost a revelation over the 'usual' Airfix, Revell, and Frog kits. The two or three colour plastic was always a nice touch if you didn't want to paint it, and the mini diorama bases with their AFVs were fantastic; they really gave the model some 'life', rather than just a small tank sat on a plain shelf...! 😉 You've done a great job with this one..... ☝ 🙂
I have such fond memories of this venerable kit! My Dad made one back in the mid 80s when I was around 5 or 6 and I just remember being fascinated by the scene, the vehicles armed to the teeth and all the equipment.
I've build one of those in early 90, in the sea of rubbishness this kit was amazing, detalis where superb. Thats the only Matchbox kit I liked ;-) I still have the Jeep to thiss day, storred in a matchbox.
When I was a soldier, 1974 - 98, kit bags (sausage bags as we called them) were always laid flat; it would never have stayed standing as illustrated in the kit.
I am getting back into the hobby after more than 40 years away. The washes part was very interesting to me. We used to do horrible clunky painting and hope for the best but lost so much detail in the process. Thin is king. Thanks for sharing.
Such a nice finish to the models.....I remember in 1980 newsagents were so desperate to get rid of these models, you could buy this kit,the montys caravan and the diamond t tank transporter all taped together at 1.50 the lot.
Great to see you back Greg (garage door etc. permitting!). I really enjoyed watching the care you invested into this old kit - with a bit of the Greg Magic it turned out brilliantly. Thanks!
I've picked up more techniques from you than all the other builders combined, dunno why. While I don't enjoy painting and avoid weathering like the plague,it's assembling that I love, I can see how it can be done without too much fuss or too much time spent for a great result still. Another ASMR gem👋

Hi, Beautifully done👍🏻. I grew-up waiting for the next Matchbox kit. I re-built many of these armor kits with my skills that slightly improved 50 years later or so😊. My favorite ones were the Jagdpanther breaking through that brick wall and also the DAK convoy in the north-African city ruins. Thank you for the video.👋🏻
Bloody brilliant! I love this kit. I built it back in 1980 - but didn't do it justice - just added some tumbleweed to a pretty basic build. I have a couple more in the stash though....so I will definitely be following what you have done here. Your use of washes is so subtle...I love it!

Great too, to see you up n about after the house move. Hope it went well.
A very nice model, either Matchbox and Esci were a real fresh air in mid '70s, they were very different from Airfix ones. Love how you'd remade the steering wheels. Sadly there weren't any SAS/LRDG's figures to complement these models then, now Strelets just made some boxes of SAS troopers in 1/72, just to (eventually) enlarge the diorama.
Nice result on what is a nice subject but so so kit. I particularly like the figures turned out well. If I might be so bold as to suggest that the finished piece would benefit from a small wooden base just to lift it.
