In a normal playthrough you're forced to be an X-Wing but the end mission trigger is just disabling that ship and taking out that tower. In a normal playthough you have to wait for the Y-Wings to get all the way over there to do the job but if you select a Y-Wing you have Ion Cannons and can finish the trigger for them immediately.
All you have to do is disable the train with ion cannons. For whatever reason this is the only mission where the X-Wing gets equipped with Ions so you can beat the mission super fast.
