Mostly agree, but here's something you don't see in just a few weeks/months of testing. The plastic fountains absorb bacteria into the pores. I scrubbed my Drinkwell fountain 2x a week, and I mean a complete disassemble of the pump, cleaning out the inner workings with a pipe brush, etc. This worked great at first but then years later my cat went to the hospital with a urinary infection. This is odd since my house is probably in the top percentile for cleanliness, quality of food, medical attention for cats, etc.
I brought the Drinkwell in and the cat hospital swapped it. They found bacteria in the pores, the sort of thing that could only be killed by bleaching the fountain during cleaning. Obviously that's out of the question since no one bleaches a drinking fountain, it would cause more harm than good. I went back to a stainless steel because there's no way for bacteria to seep into the pores.
Ceramic, glass or metal. Never plastic. Never.

Once per month, when it's time to clean the fountain, we remove the filter, flush existing water, rinse it and put a small amount of bleach and hot water in. Let it run for 5-10 min, then clean everything with soapy water. Never had a issue with my cats . We own 2 Catit flower fountains for years. The 5-10 minutes kills all bacteria and second wash removes any leftover bleach or residue. Washing both fountains takes 5-10min.

We have had the DRINK WELL larger fountain for years and love it! Our cat of 15 years ( passed in November) also loved it which was more important. Yes it has a few extra parts for cleaning, so what? We kept it in storage and have recently adopted two kittens, we have the fountain out for them now. They were feral from a shelter so socializing is still going on. I am sure this large capacity fountain will serve them well as they are consuming large bowls of water at the moment.

We received the large Drinkwell fountain as a gift 17 years ago and are still using it today for 3 cats. It works great, the charcoal filters are cheap ($1) and the cats love it. We replaced the pump once (it was around $10). We add water once a week or so. You just lift up the clear reservoir, carry it to the sink and fill it from the faucet. It has an ingenious cap design that prevents it from leaking when lifted from the fountain. It's kind of clunky to clean, but thoroughly cleaning the fountain and pump parts with household vinegar once a month has provided us with many years of service.

Thank you for reviewing these fountains! I have owned the Drinkwell fountain for my one cat. He loves the streaming water feature. It's VERY easy to maintain. I take it apart weekly and put it in the dishwasher. I use filtered water in my tank , so I have no need for the filter that comes with the fountain. It does not feel flimsy at all. I have it in a place that I have accidently kicked it and nothing has happened to it. Furthermore, The company has great customer service. I once put the bottle lid in the dishwasher with heat dry and melted it because it fell to the dishwasher floor. They replaced the entire water tank for me. In 6 years that I have the fountain I have only replaced the pump once. I don't mind the water sound, reminds me a a little waterfall fountain, Not noisy. I would definitely buy it again.

We have had the Catit Flower for a while, and have been very happy. A huge advantage is that the filters are available widely and are usually in stock. When a company says their filters last 2-4 weeks, it is usually optimistic. With multiple pets and hot weather, you are going to need to change them more often than 4 weeks. Set a calendar reminder! Buying multipack filters make this more affordable. Having said all that, we are moving to the Pioneer Pet Raindrop. The main reason is that having multiple drinking options works better with the preferences of multiple cats. I like the bottom shelf dishwasher safe aspect of it too. We are not unhappy with the Catit, but it is time to upgrade.

I really like the cleanflow for my cats. It has an 80oz bowl with a 90oz reservoir and it circulates the water passing through a carbon filter. My older cat doesnt like hair in her water and the circulation fixes that. She also doesn't like getting her whiskers wet and this has a nice large bowl that keeps her nice and dry. It lasts about a week which is good for me. It does make noise but not bad and sometimes I don't even hear it. The only issues are with hardwater it can clog and seize up the motor. I use filtered water to help it last a bit longer. Also you can buy the bowl portion separately or with the reservoir but not the reservoir separately.

Interesting! I’ve had four out of five of these products over 17 years, in reverse order though commencing with the Drinkwell Platinum. These products were for the same two Burmese cats (litter mates ie Brother and Sister from same litter).
I’ve just recently purchased them their best water fountain ever.
Here’s my feedback if anyone is interested:
    1. Drinkwell: their very first water fountain they had as kittens when they first arrived home was the Drinkwell Original. Not too bad although with no prior experience I had nothing to compare it to. The fountain was a little noisy, not easy to clean and the filtration system was a very poor design allowing non filtered water into the reservoir area.
    2. Drinkwell Platinum: I figured this would be an ‘upgrade', it was not. Simply a larger version of the original with sharp 'pokey' edges with channels designed to hold the filter frame that were collection points for dirt to accumulate and very difficult to effectively clean.
The other issue with these previous two fountains and the following two were their open bowl design, this looks appealing but is in fact an enormous dirt and debris catchment area.
Cats frequently have food debris around their mouth whether it is kibble, fresh food or retort (can) which naturally dislodges from their mouths when they drink allowing the debris to drop into the water bowl area, also dust, fur etc is caught on the water surface also contributing to the ‘contaminated' appearance of the water.
Consequently this meant frequently changing and cleaning the fountain bowl and apparatus not weekly but daily or second daily at best.
    3. Raindrop Fountain: I had two designs of this system, both were ceramic and looked fantastic, they were a great deal easier to clean, although the filtration system was not amazing - it was more of a 'token gesture'.
My primary disappointment with this was the frequency of cleaning and replacing the water as with the other two Drinkwell products due to their open bowl design as described above. The final deal breaker was in fact breakage! Being ceramic there is a slight fragility factor. The bowl component of the second extremely aesthetically pleasing rectangular design with a small water 'tower' broke, and no matter how much I tried I was unable to replace it despite the many emails I wrote to the manufacturer to purchase a spare part/replacement. I used a large Pyrex dish to continue providing my two cats with a running water drinking system which they were conditioned to as kittens.
Interestingly the literature regarding cats being drawn to running water and subsequently drinking more, therefore contributing to optimal health could not be more accurate in my experience. Undeniably this has been a catalyst for for my two cats' continued health and an enormous benefit with regard to an accidental lily intoxication with my vege-centric little girl who loves green vegetables amongst others including certain fruits.
Had she not been the very well hydrated cat she is (and was at the time) consequently maintaining excellent renal function, then that event at 3 years old would have killed her. The vet specialists claimed she would not survive the admission due to her initial blood results, yet she did! Then they stated she absolutely would not survive beyond a couple of years due to the insult that lily intoxicant had damaged her kidneys. She is nearly 17 years old and has just recently undergone a small dental procedure, she has recovered swiftly and as usual her renal function in addition to other physiological functions are in tip-top shape.
    4. Cat-It Fountain: Due to their ceramic system being irreplaceable I purchased a Cat-It fountain as an interim measure. It was the more basic blue top design rather than the green top with optional flower as demonstrated but essentially the same system. It had the best filter system so far, easier to clean and maintain, also much easier and more economical to obtain replacement filters.
I was never a fan of its 'cheap' look and feel though, but it did send me in a new direction with regard to superior filtration and ease of maintenance.
    5. PetKit Eversweet 2.0: Until only recently this has been their water fountain for the past three years. It is FABULOUS! The system is whisper quiet, my bed is less than 3 meters from where their fountain is running and I am completely unaware of it unless the water volume is running low with the intermittent capturing of air producing a unique sound - otherwise silence. The filtration system is the best ever. It completely seals when seated correctly therefore not permitting any contamination into the primary reservoir area.
While there is the benefit of 'Smart Mode' during periods of darkness and the associated claims of prolonged filter life, I allow mine to run continuously. I find my two cats periodically drink from their fountain through the night if they awaken, the smart mode was provided an inadequate supply of water for them both as a result.
The system is easy to clean, there is also another filter that sits in front of the pump, this is easily cleaned and while the recommendation is for monthly replacement, I’ve found that rinsing it efficiently each time offers a three month duration, after that there is impregnated debris that is difficult to rinse out - therefore replacement is in order.
My only dislikes: the top filter tray and water 'bowl' is difficult to remove when seated in place, and the pump does not come out so makes cleaning slightly fiddly.
The ONLY reason I have replaced this fantastic unit is for the reasons provided below. I certainly will not be offloading or discarding this unit though, it will be a excellent backup unit if needed or even a second source of water if necessary for summer months.
    6. PetKit Eversweet 3.0 Wireless: this is their seventh and absolute best unit ever, I can see no reason to ever replace this unit. It brings all of the benefits of the Eversweet 2.0 with the following improvements:
    - Stainless Steel Reservoir Bowl
    - Stainless Steel Filter Tray
    - Easier to remove assembly
    - More effective Pre-Pump Filter
    - Superior Pump design, they are all somewhat the same although this design is the very best I’ve seen yet.
    - Wireless completely removable Pump, easy to disassemble and reassemble for cleaning
    - Links to iOS/Android App providing reminders for water level and top up as necessary, filter replacement and few other remote control options.
It is more robust with durable components, the complete modular assembly is brilliantly designed, no hard to reach areas making cleaning far more efficient and simple. A great deal of thought and intelligent foresight has gone into improving what was already a great design making this unit unbeatable.
The reservoir bowl and assembly is removed from and seated on a power baseplate that also houses the indicator lighting, again this is a wireless connection other than the USB power cable which connects to the household power supply.
In all sincerity I do not NOT work for PetKit, I am thrilled I discovered their products three years ago though. I have an automatic feeder from them which I plan to upgrade also due to the new generation's far superior improvements. They produce automated litter systems which I do not have any experience with, my cats were trained early to use the toilet with a marvellous system called the ‘Litter Kwitter', they now also have access to a fabulous enclosed garden area also for all their recreational and personal requirements.
I hope this information was useful, which ever type of fountain you select go your cat/s (or dogs) be sure to keep it in clean pristine condition and replace the entire water volume weekly even if it was just topped up the day before.
Both cats and dogs are naturally drawn to running bodies of water, any water that regularly has its surface tension broken as a consequence of running water is accepted by the animal as been clean, fresh, well oxygenated and therefore safe to drink. This is why it is not uncommon for them to drink water from the bottom of the shower, toilet bowl (dogs), running garden hose or even running water faucet/tap. They are less inclined to drink from water bowls unless extremely thirsty or know it has recently been refilled. Still bodies of water like this in nature are instinctively known to be stagnant or unsafe to drink, they will only consider these sources as a option if desperation/excess thirst overrides their better judgement.
Water fountains encourage your cats/dogs to drink more plentifully which eliminates a great many health concerns arising from poor hydration and challenged renal (kidney) function. It is one of the most essential pet accessories. Investigate all available options well to find the best product for your requirements and of course financial considerations.
Personally I wouldn’t go past either of the PetKit Eversweet options, or if finances dictate, the Cat-It water fountains are an excellent alternative. The former options are more expensive and far less efficient, in addition to being frustrating to maintain.

We have 2 of the cat mate fountains, we like them because they are quiet, doesn't have any lights that annoy me and my cats, it's super easy to clean, and most importantly our cats actually seem to like them. One of our 3 cats really seems to like that there are three tiers for him to drink from, since he seems to pick a new spot to drink out of every time he goes over to it. It's definitely my top pick if you don't need or want anything fancy.

I have five indoor cats and two Catit fountains that I have been using for many years. I've never had an issue with either of the pumps and they are very quiet to run. Cleaning is relatively quick and easy and you can find filters on amazon that fit the fountain that are more economic than buying the catit brand. I've never had a problem with my cats getting chin acne, and I believe that's because their chins do not actually have to come into direct contact with the fountain itself since the water flows over the flower petal design like a waterfall. I did have a Drinkwell way in the past, but my cats did not really want to use it and you had to clean it all the time. I also had a Teardrop fountain and again my cats did not seem inclined to use it. Thank you for your review of the fountains. If I ever have a reason to switch I have a good idea of what else is out there.

I bought the Drinkwell Platinum earlier this year. We have 5 cats, and they like the water stream. It's not that difficult to clean, it's mostly just bulky, and I love not having to refill it every single day like my previous fountain. The only annoyance I have is that it's so big, I have to refill the resevoir twice when I set it back up after cleaning.
I also don't notice that much noise, and any water splashing sounds are pleasant (like a garden fountain)

Due to the comments I am thinking of buying the smaller Catit flower fountain. Currently where I live temperatures are getting high and I'm worried about my kinda picky drinker cat who is a 4 year old moggy cross Persian. She's very small and has the classic little legs from her persian mum/dad so I think the lower one may suit her better. In addition to this, in true Persian style she's also very fussy eater and only eats dry food (approved by a vet) which means she doesn't get much fluid from her food. I keep her water bowls away from her food and litter tray and have multiple placed around

I had to convert from stationary bowls and reservoirs to powered fountains after mosquitoes started breeding in the bowls INDOORS! The first unit I bought a few years ago was the Cat-It fountain. I've never really had any problems with it, and this is in a household with six cats. I later upgraded the upstairs bowl and reservoir to a Cat-It fountain as well. The only difference between the two is that the later one actually has a convenient sight window in front so the water level is easily visible. With the older one, you have to listen each day to hear the very evident water "tinkling" or "trickling" sound indicating it's time to refill.
Despite the top simply laying on the tank, I've never had any of the cats dislodge it. When the ferrets are let out for their weekly cage cleaning, they will go to the Cat-It as well and drink, and they haven't tried to remove the top either. All in all I'm quite satisfied with the Cat-It fountains, and I'm pleasantly surprised the little pumps have lasted as long as they have.

I have a petkit eversweet, also two cats. It is a neat not too small item. As of course it needs access to power, with limited space the petkit fits easiest for me. Easy to wash out and no problem with water level, just keep an eye on it. Both cats use this filter. They are contained within the house plus they have an outdoor cat run, access by tunnel from the house. Very useful information, thankyou!

I have one that's similar to the stainless steel one but it's ceramic. It's a great fountain and I've never replaced anything but the filter on it over many years. I'm not currently using it though because it's too heavy and, since I had to move back home, I had to put my cat's food and water in less convenient places to move a heavy water fountain around. Still, when I had the space, it was the best.
I originally bought a cat water fountain because I have one cat who would bat the water dish and spill it every time he went to get a drink. I finally realized that he was using the way sloshing water refracts light in order to see what the water level was so as not to get his whiskers too wet. He seems to see the water well enough in a stainless steel bowl though. I am using stainless steel bowls from the 99 cent store right now but that does mean that I have to change the water and wash the bowl at least every two days. I figure I wash my own cup out that much anyway so that's just what you have to do with whatever you drink water out of.

Just bought the catit flower 3L fountain for my 4 year old moggy cross Persian and here are my thougts/ advice:
Overall good buy and worth it for fussy cats.
    1) I have a small cat bigger than a kitten but classic small Persian legs and she’s the size of a 1yr old cat but the height is good for her
2)don’t be concerned if they don’t drink immediately. I was concerned about a heatwave and I was going to be away during the heatwave (someone was still at my house with her 24/7) and I bought this to hopefully have to keep her hydrated as she’s a fussy cat. At the beginning I was concerned as she immediately came up to it but appeared scared and didn’t drink from it. Came back after a week and she’d been in warm weather and she loves it. We only have her so we occasionally turn it off but when she wants water she’ll sit by it and wait for us to turn it on. She is peeing a lot more than she was as well.
    3) there’s a mild noise to it but if u also have a easily scared cat like mine, don’t give up if she appears originally scared mine got used to the noise and now is a sign to her that I’ve turned it on for ber

I have the PetSmart Drinkwell Platinum Fountain and I really like it. The motor is very quiet, it doesn't have an audible hum, the only thing I hear is the slight trickling of the water and it's on the lowest setting so it's not a loud flow. It does have a lot of parts to assemble but when in use it's great. I has a large capacity tank and I find the material in the body to be quite sturdy, not at all flimsy. The pump is easy to take apart to clean and very easy to maintain. I have been very happy with it and so have my cats. One likes to drink from the stream and the other drinks from the basin. It has been in the dishwasher a few times to really clean it and usually washing it in the kitchen sink is adequate. Of the four demonstrated I think the Drinkwell is the best - you get what you pay for and for the price it's a good buy. The carbon filters are not expensive and come in a 3 or 6 pack. (This is strictly MY OPINION and what works best for me.)

It has two filters, one is a square charcoal & ion exchange resin filter, and it comes with 3 of these filters which is nice. The other is a small black filter that filters the water right before entering the pump, and this filter can be washed with water to clean any cat hair or debris. I bought this one from Amazon for $19.98. I’m very happy with it. My cat would only drink from the bathroom sink, until I got the cat fountain. I highly recommend this one for sure.

I have purchased the pioneering fountain. One of its drawbacks is cleaning. In order to clean it, one has to dissemble the fountain entirely- you will even have to disengage the power cord which runs through the hole that is built into the bowl. So everytime you clean the fountain, you have to unplug and pull the cord all the way through the cable hole. I am still using it but people should be aware of the design and what it means when it comes to cleaning.

After using the Drinkwell Platinum for over 6 years we have found it a very good fountain for our cats. We have had two in that time not because of any problems with the fountain itself but the very hard water where we live, the calcium build up over time was hard to get off the sharp angles of the design so it was easier to get a new one when we moved to a softer water area. Speaking of sharp angles this is hard plastic and the edges are sharp as knives, I even cut myself on the edge of the reservoir when it slipped in my hands when I was cleaning it. Yes it is a bit noisy but you tend to not notice the motor noise after about a week and the water trickling from the top I found quite relaxing. The cats love it and it certainly encourages them to drink I need to refill the fountain every 2 - 3 days with our 3 cats. One of our cats went blind recently and the water noise helped her find the fountain easily. The filters are easy to get and replace and you can get replacement motors from Amazon or the manufacturer if needed. I thoroughly recommend it for a multiple cat household, just be careful of the sharp edges when washing it.

We’ve had the Drinkwell Platinum for about 10 years and it’s still going strong.

I wish I had seen this before I tried two other water fountains. I needed one that was easy to clean, put together, and the filters were easy to access , and replace. The two I tried hard to clean, and filters not easy to replace... Thanks for this.

You are doing the Catit fountain a great disservice. I have one of these and it holds 5 litres of water and has a clear strip down the front so you can see where the water level is. It is NOT flimsy at all and the top doesn't fall off - it is very secure. The filter can be taken out and washed so lasts much longer than you say. I have 10 cats and until recently, a very large German Shepherd (he passed away from old age). None of them have ever dislodged anything. All the cats use and love the fountain. It looks to me like you might have a much older model of the Catit flower fountain.

@@elifire4147 Really? I have one. Maybe the ones you get in America are sub-standard. The ones we get here in the UK are not. I've had no problems with mine and all my cats (10 of them) use it. By the way, you are extremely rude. I am not a "son". I am a woman.

I would like to see you renew some of the newer water fountains. One of the fountains I can't find any reviews for is the "Catit Pixi", which is cute, and comes in many colors and a stainless steel option.

I love my PetKit Pure Drink which looks similar to the one one the left. Company answers questions too. I like the smart mode which circulates every three minutes. My cats actually wait for it to turn on .. so funny.

I have the drinkwell platinum since 4 years.. my cat loves to drink from it and it shows.. i have one cat and i have to fill up the well at least once before i clean it which is every other two weeks. When i do clean it i will clean it very well and change the filter if its full of algae.

We are about the same. But we have 2 cats.
We have the Drinkwell and a Catit. We clean both once a month. The Catit we refill weekly, but even the huge Drinkwell we have to refill before cleaning!
I love knowing they're getting so much water in.

Amazing, thank you, also these are amazing for cats that are sick. Atleast my cat loves the running water way more than a normal bowl. But now that he is sick, the bowl hurts him so the running water for now will be the way with wet food. Hopefully in two weeks he will be back to normal. I'll come back here to reply or edit this.
Hope your cats live long and happy!

Thank you for the very extensive review! You did a very thorough and take apart description of how they come apart to clean and put together, along with cost and filter replacements. Would you please consider review cat toy wands, the kind with the the long wand attachment that you can change out the attachable toy pieces? I'd love to hear what you have to say. I've been buying one particular brand, thinking it was durable and long lasting, but it keeps falling apart. Not fixable.

This is a super good review of all of these so hats off! I just wish I could find people talking about cable/cord lengths. I'm looking for one with a longer cord length and I find it so hard to find those details in and descriptions or reviews

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  4 роки тому +2

Hey Craig, thanks for commenting. I unfortunately no longer have these fountains on hand for reference, but I do know that they were all relatively short. You may have to pair them with an extension cord. I'd recommend contacting the companies to get the details on cord length. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck!

We have the catmate at home for a few years and since a few months also the drinkwell platinum. The drinkwell is by default noisier but it also has some major positives: cats drink from it more, don't throw in toys, don't throw in food, do not wash their paws in it as much, it grows less algae... while all those things sadly do happen with the catmate. As for the noise: we reduced it to minimum by putting in our spare catmate pump, which also gets rid of the difficult to clean piece of plastic sticking out - once the flow is well adjusted you really don't need to mess with it anyway. The pumps are the same size. Other noises stay though, the water flow can be very present especially at higher speeds and the when the water comes from the reservoir randomly it makes lots of noise. My cat and I nearly flew to the ceiling the first time it happened.

I just saw this and it looks great, and is see-thru, and has just the kind of flow my tap-drinking cats love. Unfortunately it is about $60 USF or around $78 Canadian, which is double any of the others.
I will have to save up.

We've been using this one for about 2 years, but when I use up the last filter I'm going to toss it. My cats never really warmed up to it, and honestly, I think the filter makes the water taste terrible. Yes, I tasted it trying to figure out why my cats don't seem to like it!

I bought the Petkit Eversweet 2S on November 27 of 2022 from Amazon, i think there was a Black Friday sale going on and paid $30 including tax. I've been using it for about two months now and am totally happy with it. The filters are a little more expensive but with the 'smart mode' feature turned on it runs the pump less and is supposed to let the filter last longer before it needs to be changed. Its super easy to clean. It has a smart design that allows you to remove that water container and clean in the sink without having the pump's power cord connected and getting the the way. I just have one cat so the size is prefect for me.

I purchased the Drinkwell for my cat with kidney failure so he would drink more water. The machine is still going strong after 6 years and Home Depot sells a pump in the garden section but the original is still going strong.
One of my 4 cats breaths the water in when he drinks so I purchased the Everlast about 2 years ago. The main problem I have with this water dish is that the tube pops off that pushes the water up to the top to bubble so that the water is dragnet on the surface. Also you have to buy their brand of filters because the senator's whole is too large. The pump is going strong.
