The Ferrari of Motorcycles - MV Agusta 500 Three - Isle of Man TT

  • Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, Joey Dunlop, John McGuinness. The Isle of Man TT is like nothing else on earth. A true throwback to what racing originally was. Fast flat-out competitions on open roads, no safety to speak of. Although the Snaefell Mountain Circuit has been recreated for a few sims, the true way to experience the Isle of Man and appreciate everything it is about is on two wheels. Isle of Man TT Ride on the Edge 2 is a sim which came out in 2020, and in my opinion does everything right when it comes to replicating the feel of the TT. Motorcycle sim racing is rewarding, challenging and most importantly a fun change of pace from the normal. Lapping something as beautiful as the MV Agusta is just the cherry on top.
A first for me to do something on two wheels, I hope everyone enjoys!

MV Agusta is really more like Maserati. Once great, a hero of the vintage era, but only fringe relevance today. A brand that is actually more similar to Ferrari would be Ducati

I had the honor to meet and personally talk with the legend of two-wheels motorsport, Agostini, at the Varano de Melegari autodrome here in Italy. A great rider and a great person as well, like all the good ol' gentleman racers of 60s and 70s...

@@michaelkitchin9665 like for f1 and sport cars of today: some people here in Italy compared him to Valentino Rossi before his "downfall" which, they said some years ago, was at the same level of "Ago" and was about to surclass him. But what they didn't count is the HUGE advantages that the tech and electronics gave in half a century of racing history - and that the races themselves are on a compleately whole new level in terms of safety and layouts... c'mon, how can we compare a random racer of the 60s/70s, running still on drum beakes ready to fade away in any moment, in tracks that were semi-permanent circuits spanning across everyday roads with straw bales as the side of the track to the racers of today (except for the TT - that "Vale" never ran or, if I remember well, he only did some pratice laps at "cruising" speed)? Ago's victories, among the ones of his rivals, were at least 10 times more difficult and dangerous compared to today's standards, and therefore, a MotoGP Champion of the 60s and 70s, counts at least 10-15 times as a top-notch rider of today.

I go the TT every year and have had the pleasure of riding the mountain section without speed limits on my CBR1000RR. It's a strange feeling legally whizzing past a police car at the Bungalow at 100mph. They make it one way from Ramsay to Creg Ny Ba but there's always still accidents. Wish someone would bring out a motorbike handlebar controller again. They had one for PS2. Yamaha I think it was. They're available still but either hard to get, expensive or both. You could link then to pc with an adapter ps2-pc adapter.
I really loved the PS2 TT games. In Real Road Racing (2nd) they had Ulster GP and North West tracks plus Oliver's Mount and Macau. So wish they would add at least Ulster and the North West to this game.
I'm also a fervent fan of the old classic gp500 game too. So wish there'd been a classic motorcycle racing game made like GPL. Now that would have been cool. Riding against the likes of Sheene, Roberts, Schwantz or Rainey. Also like the free ride option in this IOM game. Especially when you can take the classic bikes out for a Sunday ride on some Irish country lanes. Then back to your garage for tea 😃
Nice video, great watch and we'll enjoyed.

The exception to this rule is "Ballaugh" which is pronounced "Ba-laff". The Glen Helen Inn/hotel, which is to the right of the road (the building on the left is just someone's house) actually shut in 2014. However, it has been replaced by "glamping pods". You should definitely try and get over for the races and going off your penchant for classics, you'd definitely enjoy the Classic TT/Manx Grand Prix, which is held on the Mountain Course every August. Actually you don't control a motorcycle with your "body" or weight shift. You control it through counter steering at all speeds above 12 mph. You push forward on the right handle bar to turn right and push the left handle bar to turn left. Your body might be used to get the bike to tolerate a greater lean angle than it otherwise would, but essentially you steer with your arms/hands. Pushing right initially slightly turns the machine to the left but that creates a right sided lean which converts to a right turn, and vice versa when turning left.

  • @Villoresi

    Another good one.
The textures and lighting on this really are excellent. I especially like the stone textures, particularly on the exposed rock on some of the hillsides. A lot of sims and arcade racers do that look poorly, where it can seem rather foamy, like, literally, the shaped foam you might use to do landscape features on a model railroad.
What other, real circuits does this have? I know there's Billown and Jurby South on IoM itself. And the biggies in Northern Ireland, to my knowledge, are Coleraine, Dundrod, and Mid Antrim.
Yeah, I can imagine the controls aspect is tricky business.

Actually you totally do steer a motorcycle, theres videos on youtube of people trying to steer bikes with their bodyweight only, it straight up doesnt work, I'm talking 3 or 4 seconds to turn in 20 degrees of lean.
Of course body position is still incredibly important (aero and center of mass changes are huge especially in motorsports like MotoGP and SuMo,) but when it comes to making the bike go the direction you want there is objectively no substitute for handlebar inputs.
Fun fact you actually steer left to lean right and vice versa, so the bar inputs for a right hand turn are as follows
Turn in: push on the right side of the bars (steering your front wheel left) this throws the bike over onto its right side and begins the turn
Sustain: let the bars find their balance (they will essentially do this on their own) and the bike will hold its lean angle
Corner exit: push on the left side of the bars (steering your front wheel to the right) standing the bike back up.
If you don't believe that you have to steer the opposite direction to lean on a bike go try it on your bicycle - or just google it and see like hundreds of videos about it idk
Anyway cool vid I just wanted to correct the "you dont steer a motorcycle" myth because its categorically false. Sorry if I came off as a dick, I genuinely love this channel!

(Edit: I thought I was the only one to suggest these ideas below. But GPLaps briefly summarizes the same thing @8:53. Sorry, if you reply back with "He already said that" or something. I might have jumped the gun posting this info before watching the entire video, but you still might benefit from the detail I provided, as I explain WHY it works.)
I found the easiest way to play any motorcycle sim with a wheel, is to turn the steering lock setting WAY down to 180 degrees or less. (In the controller software, not in the game.) That way you are only turning the wheel left or right a small amount and emulating "lean" on a bike. Sounds dorky but I actually sit up in my chair and lean with the wheel only going 75 degrees each way. (I use a 150 degree lock setting for my G29) It really works!
Also, if different camera options are available, try not to use a camera that keeps the horizon level with your monitor (as GPLaps is doing), and sometimes even shows the handlebar and your arms leaning in the view. Your perspective will be messed up when judging the amount of lean in a turn. Sure you can use that camera style. But I find that the immersion factor is greater, and you can drive more accurately (faster lap times) with a camera FIXED to the bike's longitudinal axis and "rolls" the entire picture with the lean of the bike. Games that I found that have both these camera examples when riding motorcycles are The Crew or even GTA5. But in actual motorcycle racing SIMs, the "fixed" camera should be available. If not, then it's not a sim.

It's weird how there is so little overlap with the simracing car crowd. There have been quite a few motorcycle games over the years (some more arcade than others), but none are really that well known in the simracing crowd.
Some solution with our steering wheels for a controller (with ffb already built in) that all of us already have for car racing seems like and obvious one to me. I've seen a few examples but nothing that really got popular.
You would think a company like Fanatec that offers a new licensed car specific wheel seemingly every month now, would look into developing something like that, but nothing yet... I've been using my wheel and pedals for all sorts of motorcycle sims and games for years now, it works surprisingly well.

The TT games are fun mostly, but the physics can leave a lot to be desired at times.
Mainly for me, Riding within the limits of reality is mostly fine, but as you get closer to the limit and beyond it the game struggles physics wise.
Overall the Old PlayStation 2 TT games by jester are much better games, handling etc and with real tracks as well as the TT course. (Not as fancy looking but still great to play, especially as you like classic Sims (on pcsx2 as well ;) )
In terms of motorcycle handling physics I'd reccomend GP Bikes, it's basically the motorcycle version of rFactor. Fully moddable, and coming to steam, when the mods are good the racing is second to none. Oh and it's got FFB on steering wheels (I know some fanatec users strapped custom handlebars on the quick release instead of a rim), and when combined with the virtual reality it supports it's awesome.
RiMS racing is kind of the successor to the TT games, and isnt too bad for that and a little bit beyond the milestone MotoGP and ride titles, and way beyond TrackDayR.
Agree with the lack of controller availability being a huge issue however. To the point I'm looking at making my own USB inputs to stick on my TX wheel using spares from my actual race bike.
The other thing is for me a lot of bike games are a lot of promises but very rarely meet expectations. But still, good to see this kind of stuff getting more coverage love it, and nice riding too !

On slow turns you will corner better if you let the rider sit up, keeping your weight over the bike, then tucking again past the apex on throttle. Looks like a great game. I was a big fan of Tourist Trophy (polyphony digital) on the ps2 but sadly didn't have the mountain course!

Does the second game have sidecars? I used to play Suzuki TT Superbikes Real Road Racing Championship for the PS2 but only on the sidecars because the bikes were too hard/weird to control. Then in the PC game Test Drive Unlimited I found that using a wheel to control the bikes worked well. Wish they would come out with an affordable but good handlebar + leaning type controller. From what I've read, on real bikes you have to counter steer slightly while leaning.

@4:10 How is this more a sim than Ride 4? It is more focussed on a single event and features less variety of bikes, that is all.
@11:48 Okay, there are partical effect but Ride 4 has weather effects, day and night cycle, tire wear in some events, fuel consumption.

This version of the game (version 2) has always supported wheels as far as I know. Im not able to get force feedback but i may be missing a setting somewhere. I set the degrees of rotation on my wheel to 120 and otherwise can just map it in game like any controller. quite fun!

I feel like it wouldn't bee to hard maybe 3D print a set of handle bars to put on a racing wheel. It wouldn't be perfect but it would probably be better. And i mean if youre good with a soldering iron and electronics you can probably have a brake, clutch, throttle etc. on it

never knew you could use a wheel and pedals on this, bought the game as it was IOMTT but the controls were horrendous using a controller felt so sloppy and not snappy so uninstalled. Perhaps i shouldn't have compare it to actually riding in real life, going to give it a try with the wheel now though

Hate the windscreen colour. It should be clear with just reflections and distortions. Given your entire focus is a tiny point on this screen, and it spoils all the beautiful graphics of this game with a lame smoke tint!
