Testing the Passive Operator from Error Instruments

  • I gave in to temptation and bought another noise doodad. Decided on the Eurorack version because I had just the right amount of space in a Pod to make an awesome passive toolbox. It arrived yesterday and I threw this together in about 90 minutes. The metallic squelches you hear at first, embellishing the sampled drum loop, are coming from Crop Circle. You'll see me dialing in the Operator just before you start to hear it. First impressions: It seems to be louder, crunchier, and more responsive than NOON (and rings up at less than half the price); however the controls are a lot less elegant, and when you're fully patched up like this it is impossible to reach the top 2 knobs for tweaking. The desktop version is laid out differently and may be slightly more ergonomic, but either way this is a small device and the panel can get very crowded. I'd give Passive Operator top marks for sound, but NOON totally beats it in the playability department.

I definitely like those sounds! It's a very jazzy set, and proof that the Operator is an intuitive instrument. Too bad about the ergonomics, though. We just need to buy bigger houses to enclose all the tabletop instruments.

I tried this exact same patch with the NOON (disconnected Operator, kept main rack exactly same & plugged all the cables into NOON instead - video maybe tomorrow). I'm thinking now that the way the Operator is built - with a patch bay instead of switches - encourages reckless experimentation and that's what makes it seem "wilder" than the NOON.
