People who think Kendrick walks around like a moral figure/savior are likely people that don’t actually listen to his music and just have overarching stereotypes about “backpack” rappers. All Kendrick does is put his personal experiences in songs, whether they are good or bad. Like, for instance, in XXX on Damn, he talks about the fact that he was a hypocrite talking at a gun control convention; however, if his own family was murdered, he would be out in the streets killing/avenging his family. It’s not about being morally good or bad. It’s just about being truthful and authentic.

I don't think the end conclusion is wrong though. Kendrick is happy to scrap if it comes to that in spite of the risks because he really believes that hip hop should be personal and that people should be willing to say what's on their heart. Drake's been smugly superior to Kendrick for a decade now, but wasn't willing to actually say it out loud until Kendrick needled him.
I do agree but I don’t feel the control verse is a good example. It was less of calling for beef and more of explaining how competition is there and that he is a friend and a competitor to anyone in the industry
The biggest thing this entire situation has shown is that no one really listens to lyrics or pays attention…Drake has been sneak dissing for years and Kendrick has literally said on multiple occasions don’t push me.. “stop playing with me for I turn you to a song” “be humble, sit down” talking about him being Gemini and literally spazzing out - on one hand Kendrick has been upfront about this for years where the other is throwing stones and hiding their hands…then when Kendrick finally pops out it’s absurd that with zero evidence a known liar can say he beat his wife and everyone would rather take that and discredit an honest man than think with common sense

Kendrick likely doesn't have any other evidence beyond industry knowledge, so speaking up without solid proof would've got _him_ in legal trouble, not Drake, and discredited the story. Playing up a rap beef to reach a global audience, even beyond hip-hop fans, even beyond _music_ fans, was probably the best strategy he could've used for spreading awareness, and genuinely might protect people who otherwise could become victims. It's literally been on international news broadcasts! And if it gives people the courage to bring their cases to court, even better. That's my take, at least.
A lot of these analysis videos keep saying the beef started at Like That and assume Kendrick started it. But really it was Drake who started it by getting in his feelings about the Control verse. And now after all the throwing of rocks and hiding his hand, the Like That verse was just saying that the beef was reaching its climax.

We need a revolution to get back to lyricism and authenticity. Hip Hop has been stagnant under Drakes rule. Yes, he’s given us bops but he’s sold out the culture while doing so. He had his chance to shift the culture. He’s only jumped on features for up and coming artists to keep himself relevant. Drakes reign is up. His fans and his career will still be around but Kendrick has awaken us to who and what Drake is and stands for.
What rule? Drake is popular in pop culture with all the white teens. Not hip hop, the legends dont take him seriously and neither do we as a community. His popularity comes from other spaces mostly lol.
Both of the Pusha and Kendrick disses are the equivalent of when Leonidas throws a spear at Xerxes in the movie 300. The goal is to show that that's bigger than life entity is but a man and bleeds like the rest of us. But a section of Drake's fanbase don't care about that aspect.
Kendrick was clearly much more strategic than Drake. He had the long term in mind & probably had several of those disses and more prepared. Ultimately I think that's why he won the battle over Drake
His songs and flow were just way better. Kendrick is different and when he raps he makes you think, learn, and feel something. (Kendrick's bigged up Michael Jackson a few times, featured a picture of him on his Overly Dedicated mixtape cover and wore the signature MJ shiny glove on the Mr.Morale tour, so I don't think he would do those things if he thought Michael Jackson was a pedo)I think he was referring to how Drake has snakes in his camp, being that this was the main topic Kendrick touched on in the song. I like the video. I feel as if you got your perspective on Kendrick totally wrong, saying it's personal, saying he stooped so low. It's a good video, but that part could not be further from the truth. I mean no harm, so let me try to educate you. Kendrick is and has always been for the culture, BLACK culture, the black culture which birthed true hip-hop within America. It's something he, of course, will be passionate about because it affects our people. However, most people who are not within the culture will not understand. If they try to understand without proper guidance, it leads to misinformed or ignorant (lack of knowledge) opinions that will only perpetuate this cycle of misinformation being spread. Kendrick stood for the culture of genuine black hip-hop and real BLACK music, from jazz to hip-hop, which he's always represented. Drake is, unfortunately, shallow and doesn't really do anything for the culture but steal and portray as if he's actually a part of the culture. Along with the many other skeletons Drake apparently has, it gave K Dot ammo, sure. But don't confuse the current topic of a song or the contents of a song, meaning the lyrics, to be the only reason why they are beefing. It's essentially a good vs. not good. Someone who stands for something vs. another who stands for nothing but continues to profit from destroying hip-hop. Again, great video. This is just a better perspective on black hip-hop culture to help you understand better.

Mr Morale album was the "skeletons." He denounced any savior/prophet pinnings on him and basically said i gotta work on myself. This beef was about their place in the culture of hip hop
I think you're wrong about this at 7:50. He made Mr morale to show the world the skeletons in his closet and hes very open about who he is and where he's at in his life trying to continue to grow and get better as a person. So i dont think he had anything to lose in that perspective
if there’s one thing i’d like to bring up here, it’s that Kendrick has actually shown his duality throughout his music. He may be trying to hold himself to a higher standard, but if need be, he can and WILL get his hands dirty. On the OG version of Element/Paramedic, he calls out rappers that were taking shots at him (Sean, French and Jay Elec). even before this was revealed, he had taken shots at Jay Electronica on Untitled 07. lastly, something with a narrative such as the second verse on XXX has Kendrick showing that he is not afraid to get aggressive should he feel he has a reason to. he even outright dares others Drake specifically to test him and see what happens. i bring this up to say that i dont think it shouldve been all that surprising that Kendrick would go as low as to target Drake’s neck in this beef as he has shown how willing he is to do so. just figured i’d mention that as well ^^

the thing is.... Kendrick cab make his kind of music because he is Kendrick. in a way, Melle Mel was right when he said Kendrick is not "influential" because it is true that despite his success, very few rappers will want to (or, more to the fact, be able to) emulate him because his way would not make money for most artists today. He is solidified, so he can release music sporadically, disappear for years, not engage in social media. And while lyrical rap is favored and "pure," not every artist would he called to do that work, and not every music needs to be that.

He said that 6-16 in LA is where the beef picks up steam and completely left out Euphoria, which is a clear highlight and turning point of the beef. He just glosses over key details and also does not address black culture and why this is a central theme in Kendrick's stance and hip hop in general. Then he also only cited Anthony Fantano of all people as some sort of authority on thos beef, while there were so many other creators with more nuanced, and educated takes, but they just don't happen to be white. It's like, don't waste our time with this white-washed take. It's not about saying white people can't have commentary on this, but it's just ironic given the actual point Kendrick is making.
I disagree with the pretext that all art should be treated with the same level of of interest and seriousness considering different works have different purposes, but I can get behind the argument of wanting the art to be its best/healthiest self

No person could possibly be perfect. Kendrick “stooping down” to a different level is showing he’s a regular man that has moments of confrontation and occasionally gives his ego the satisfaction of being called the best and the greatest. It’s another huge dub for KDot in my opinion

The point is just the final point. It's not even about Drake. It's about a return to what hip hop was as a reflection of the cultures it emerged from. Drake's music is not hip hop. It's at best hip pop. The realest diss was not Meet the Grahams. The realest diss was Not Like Us. The reason is because of the totality of what the words Not Like Us means when applied to a west coast beat. Kendrick is using the beat selection to basically say that this is where he comes from. This is an authentic reflection of his hip hop heritage. Meanwhile, Drake is over there using Chicago drill type beats on Push Ups when he's Canadian. When looking at the hip hop culture, whether it's LA, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, etc., they all have a style that reflects their regional culture. I'd say even Toronto kind of does but does it embrace Drake or does Drake embrace it? Not in this beef. The kill shot was Kendrick calling Drake a colonizer who is using hip hop culture just for profit.
I'm going to break this down for you. Very simply. Drake is an actor playing the role of a rapper. He's a culture vulture, A. Cosplaying Foreigner. Foreign both to this country and this culture. Kendrick is born and bred from hip hop culture, which is Black American ORIGINATED culture. That's all there is to it... Fundamentally. Everything else is just details.
Only thing I disagree with is the fact that Kendrick didn't actually start this beef in all actuality, Drake did with Cole on First Person Shooter (For All The Dogs Album)
Great video. I just wished you touched more on the buildup. This doesn't start with like that this starts with the very beginning of Kendricks career when he toured with Drake. The subliminal back and forth they've been having in terms of sneak disses and actual artistic output over the last decade frames this in a very different perspective The overall thesis you've presented here is very valid but I think you should look into the deeper history behind this feud to add more ammo to your argument.

For me this should be a catapult towards the sort of art we claim as good and really take into consideration on how now and even on a broader scale we look towards the complex and to not take it as the simple especially when we’re not looking at it for what can be but for what it is which is keeping us from potential in a scale for improvement and understanding on level of like and not off mediocrity and what can keep of false connections and really like the vid and hope for content on the great shift of hiphop and rap as we know can’t wait .

I think when he says "ask what would Mike would do" also talks about "Man in the Mirror". He was saying that Drake needs to think about what he has, what he doesn't have, and what he used to have. His past has so many things that call out his character and no thought going into that mind.

The one thing I am having a really hard time understanding is - did J. Cole really believe that Drake was part of the Big 3. I don't know why he would even think Drake would be in a category like that. I am so confused by that still.
I don't think Kendrick had more to lose to Drake but he did have more important things to lose. I think Kendrick knew from the very start that he wasn't allowed to mess it up and fail in this war. If he lost this war, his GOAT title would have been at the least heavily questioned and at worst he would have lost everything he had built on for the past decade. But because he ended up more as the victor than the loser in comparison to Drake, it has and for sure will cement him as the greatest rapper ever as he had achieved pretty much anything and everything a rapper could achieve
I know you say it's not worth speculating why Drake wants to beef with Kendrick, but to my mind, it feels almost straightforward to suggest that his dislike for K-dot is basically about the thing that he has over him: artistry. Drake's popularity and success has come through a cynical reliance on stripping the artistry, authenticity and integrity from his work, whereas Kendrick has gained his acclaim through being the opposite of Drake. He's an existential threat to Drake, in that he's counted among the greats without having compromised his entire career surrendering authorship, intentionality and purpose the way Drake has. Kendrick's popularity and respect within the industry runs counter to every move Drake has made to gain his success.

Kendrick likely doesn't have any other evidence beyond industry knowledge, so speaking up without solid proof would've got _him_ in legal trouble, not Drake, and discredited the story. Playing up a rap beef to reach a global audience, even beyond hip-hop fans, even beyond _music_ fans, was probably the best strategy he could've used for spreading awareness, and genuinely might protect people who otherwise could become victims. It's literally been on international news broadcasts! And if it gives people the courage to bring their cases to court, even better. That's my take, at least.
A lot of these analysis videos keep saying the beef started at Like That and assume Kendrick started it. But really it was Drake who started it by getting in his feelings about the Control verse. Kendrick was clearly much more strategic than Drake. He had the long term in mind & probably had several of those disses and more prepared. Ultimately I think that's why he won the battle over Drake

He won the battle because he made the people feel again through the music. Drake has the same ole flow that he does all the time and his music had no real substance. I like the video. I feel as if you got your perspective on Kendrick totally wrong, saying it's personal, saying he stooped so low. It's a good video, but that part could not be further from the truth.
I mean no harm, so let me try to educate you. Kendrick is and has always been for the culture, BLACK culture, the black culture which birthed true hip-hop within America. It's something he, of course, will be passionate about because it affects our people. However, most people who are not within the culture will not understand. If they try to understand without proper guidance, it leads to misinformed or ignorant (lack of knowledge) opinions that will only perpetuate this cycle of misinformation being spread. Kendrick stood for the culture of genuine black hip-hop and real BLACK music, from jazz to hip-hop, which he's always represented.
Drake is, unfortunately, shallow and doesn't really do anything for the culture but steal and portray as if he's actually a part of the culture. Along with the many other skeletons Drake apparently has, it gave K Dot ammo, sure. But don't confuse the current topic of a song or the contents of a song, meaning the lyrics, to be the only reason why they are beefing. It's essentially a good vs. not good. Someone who stands for something vs. another who stands for nothing but continues to profit from destroying hip-hop.
Again, great video. This is just a better perspective on black hip-hop culture to help you understand better.

if there’s one thing i’d like to bring up here, it’s that Kendrick has actually shown his duality throughout his music. He may be trying to hold himself to a higher standard, but if need be, he can and WILL get his hands dirty.
On the OG version of Element/Paramedic, he calls out rappers that were taking shots at him (Sean, French and Jay Elec). even before this was revealed, he had taken shots at Jay Electronica on Untitled 07. lastly, something with a narrative such as the second verse on XXX has Kendrick showing that he is not afraid to get aggressive should he feel he has a reason to. he even outright dares others Drake specifically to test him and see what happens.
i bring this up to say that i dont think it shouldve been all that surprising that Kendrick would go as low as to target Drake’s neck in this beef as he has shown how willing he is to do so. just figured i’d mention that as well ^^

Kendrick cab make his kind of music because he is Kendrick. in a way, Melle Mel was right when he said Kendrick is not "influential" because it is true that despite his success, very few rappers will want to (or, more to the fact, be able to) emulate him because his way would not make money for most artists today. He is solidified, so he can release music sporadically, disappear for years, not engage in social media. And while lyrical rap is favored and "pure," not every artist would he called to do that work, and not every music needs to be that.

He said the beef ended with Meet the Grahams and that it started with the Like That verse. He said that 6-16 in LA is where the beef picks up steam and completely left out Euphoria, which is a clear highlight and turning point of the beef. He just glosses over key details and also does not address black culture and why this is a central theme in Kendrick's stance and hip hop in general. Then he also only cited Anthony Fantano of all people as some sort of authority on thos beef, while there were so many other creators with more nuanced, and educated takes, but they just don't happen to be white. It's like, don't waste our time with this white-washed take. It's not about saying white people can't have commentary on this, but it's just ironic given the actual point Kendrick is making.
I disagree with the pretext that all art should be treated with the same level of of interest and seriousness considering different works have different purposes, but I can get behind the argument of wanting the art to be its best/healthiest self

Just like his music, Kendrick's intentions are probably multi-layered. But I do believe this is one of the intended angles of the beef.

The point is just the final point. It's not even about Drake. It's about a return to what hip hop was as a reflection of the cultures it emerged from. Drake's music is not hip hop. It's at best hip pop.
The realest diss was not Meet the Grahams. The realest diss was Not Like Us. The reason is because of the totality of what the words Not Like Us means when applied to a west coast beat. Kendrick is using the beat selection to basically say that this is where he comes from. This is an authentic reflection of his hip hop heritage. Meanwhile, Drake is over there using Chicago drill type beats on Push Ups when he's Canadian. When looking at the hip hop culture, whether it's LA, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, etc., they all have a style that reflects their regional culture. I'd say even Toronto kind of does but does it embrace Drake or does Drake embrace it? Not in this beef. The kill shot was Kendrick calling Drake a colonizer who is using hip hop culture just for profit.

The one thing I am having a really hard time understanding is - did J. Cole really believe that Drake was part of the Big 3. I don't know why he would even think Drake would be in a category like that. I am so confused by that still.
I don't think Kendrick had more to lose to Drake but he did have more important things to lose. I think Kendrick knew from the very start that he wasn't allowed to mess it up and fail in this war. If he lost this war, his GOAT title would have been at the least heavily questioned and at worst he would have lost everything he had built on for the past decade. But because he ended up more as the victor than the loser in comparison to Drake, it has and for sure will cement him as the greatest rapper ever as he had achieved pretty much anything and everything a rapper could achieve

I know you say it's not worth speculating why Drake wants to beef with Kendrick, but to my mind, it feels almost straightforward to suggest that his dislike for K-dot is basically about the thing that he has over him: artistry. Drake's popularity and success has come through a cynical reliance on stripping the artistry, authenticity and integrity from his work, whereas Kendrick has gained his acclaim through being the opposite of Drake. He's an existential threat to Drake, in that he's counted among the greats without having compromised his entire career surrendering authorship, intentionality and purpose the way Drake has. Kendrick's popularity and respect within the industry runs counter to every move Drake has made to gain his success.
