- The interscapular, lower trapezius, and latissimus dorsi fascia are often neglected by therapists working the shoulder. This is most likely because we tend to focus too much on rotator cuff function - and while this is absolutely critical, it's only one small piece of the puzzle that is shoulder dysfunction.
In this video, which is an excerpt from my Shoulder Masterclass, we focus on safe and sustainable treatment techniques for these posterior shoulder tissues. The posterior shoulder is, for my money, a great place to start your shoulder treatment sequence. Not only does having your client prone mean you can access the posterior shoulder tissues, it alsio gives you great access to all those subsidiary muscles as well.
Now the posterior shoulder has larger tissues, so this means a broad approach. Using your fingers and thumbs here is a recipe for overuse injuries in your hands. Instead, use your upper forearm and work slowly so you properly engage the tissue.
So we start by focussing on the distal extension of the shoulder and then condense your treatment towards the more symptomatic areas of concern. You'll often see a lot of load and tonicity in the lats and interscaular region. Free this up, and then you can move onto the posterior shoulder and rotator cuff.
Remember to be mindful when treating shoulder dysfunction that you include the subsidiary fascial connections when treating shoulder girdle dysfunction.
