Honestly, it's a good thing they're staying away from the Old Republic. Seeing how they've bastardized and poorly handled legacy characters like Luke, Han, Leia, Lando, Chewie etc, it makes me shudder to think what they'd do to Revan, Meetra Surik, Bastila Shan, Canderous Ordo, Carth Onasi and others. Not to mention, HK-47. Knowing disney, they'd get rid of all the morally grey elements that make these characters so great. Bastila would be a preachy, goody two shoes girl boss, Canderous would be a genocidal maniac, Carth would be just a whiney bitch and Revan would remain a bad guy. And Meetra, well, they'd suck at handling her ending. The farther they stay away from that era, the better.
@@achaudhari101 even if she’s gone the current generation of writers across most forms of media don’t hold up to older ones. I don’t know if people have just become less imaginative or wise or what but in my experience the further back you go, the more stories would actually have something to say that would resonate with you. It’s not always the case but so many movies coming out today are just filler. KOTOR doesn’t deserve to be filler. For one thing people for whatever reason can’t just make a straight up adaptation these days, they’ve always gotta add some stupid unnecessary thing, but even if they did manage to translate the story to the screen successfully, KOTOR doesn’t deserve that. Revan’s character is one that demands to be challenged and requires nuance to balance his nature and perspective as a whole. In no instance ought he be a surface level character. He has so many layers and conflicting motivations to explore without contradiction and frankly I can’t think of a good current writer off the top of my head who not only would be able to understand and replicate that character but be able to move him forward and build on the things the audience already cares about him for.
I hope they never touch The Old Republic, after how they treated the OT trio, Boba Fett and Obi-Wan it’s truly for the best that they don’t focus on it whatsoever as they would absolutely twist it beyond all recognition.
I forgot Obi-Wan got his own Disney plus series. I never thought that would be possible but I never imagined Disney would bungle Star Wars so badly in general.
@@dony2852 And talking about Marvel, the recent Guardians of the Galaxy movie showcases exactly what happens when you make what most fans like to see, and it was honestly surprising.
I think the reason is the Lucasfilm story group spent alot of time building the high republic so they can tell whatever story they want regardless of the impact on the overarching story of star wars. They don't want to feel like they have to spend energy reading books, playing the games, or having a general understanding of the lore. They want it quick and easy so that non star wars fans can follow it but having it lead to no substance in the end. They don't want to put in the work for respecting and embracing the lore, they want to reimagine the lore and change it to whatever they want so they won't have to deal with fan backlash. They do this by keeping the stories contained and mostly related to that specific era to justify creating lore without having to respect the previous lore and they hope they could just ultimately replace that era for this one. It's sad.
It’s for the best that KK doesn’t know about it. If you thought the backlash to Jake Skywalker was bad, it would be 100x worse if they screwed up The Old Republic.
It would be an endless shitstorm for them. I personally will dedicate the remaining of my lifetime to shit on them anywhere I can. Reddit, Twitter, UA-cam, I will make their life a living hell for fucking up a perfect story.
There's only been a few callbacks to any Old Republic material the prison planet belsavis is mentioned in Andor, the Rakata empire being mentioned in Andor, the Dashade race from the old republic MMO being mentioned in one of the new Thrawn Trilogies. In the new Thrawn Trilogy, a war between the sith and jedi where the chiss side with the sith which they do in the MMO is mentioned by Thrawn, the sith emperor in the mmo is mentioned just as an ancient sith emperor.
@@АлексейМомот-щ7о oh yes, a single shot of one that nothing interesting was done with while the Old Republic MMO fleshed them out and made them more than just a creature from a holiday special
Not only underestimated but seemingly ignored it completely. How else can KK justify her comments that they had nothing to go off of when creating the ST, like the EU never contained any post ROTJ content…or that George had handed over his treatments.
My favorite play through of KOTOR 2 was when something glitched in my save and after some Bastila flashback, she spent the rest of the game just standing inside the Ebon Hawk’s exit ramp far enough back that you’d exit the ship if you tried to walk there.
For the same reason they ignore the vast majority of the EU. They didn't do it, therefore it doesn't exist. After all, Kennedy said - "We don't have 800 page tomes to work from." I also have zero doubt that the only reason Thrawn was brought into Disney Wars was because of Feloni and perhaps Favereau. Kennedy, if left her her devices, would surely have said - "Did it happen under George? Yes? Then into the garbage it goes! I'm the boss now!"
Whats funny about her not knowing the eu existed, is that we literally have more books and other content than any other pop culture franchise in history. It amazes me she had no idea about the gold mine of income she was blessed with, and didn't even know it existed.
@@CrazyxEnigma Kathleen "Oath-Breaker" Kennedy is in charge of Lucasfilm, but I think she honestly believes that Feloni is creating brand new original stuff when he brings Thrawn into existence into Disney Wars - and of course his personal Waifu, Ashoka - or however it's spelled. I think she "trusts" him as much as a bad owner might "trust" a pet they don't like but have to keep because of outside forces (pun intended). She's always ready to swat his nose with a newspaper if he gets out of line, through any number of means.
To be fair, the High Republic is written by comicbook writers, many of whom have trouble keeping their own continuity straight, much less the old EU's. As for Thrawn, that seems more a sign of desperation than something slipping past Kennedy. They are raiding the old EU for ideas because their own ideas have been flopping left and right. That said, given their handling of Boba Fett and Solo, chances don't look good for Thrawn.
@@CrazyxEnigma very difficult to understand as well, especially if you have already placed your world view in a stubborn and unrealistic category of "everything against your world view is evil" type deal. Not only Revan, these people wouldn't understand Meetra and Kreia too. They are so rigid and narrow-minded it's no wonder they lack creativity.
I imagine they have the same mentality as modern comicbook writers in that they want to promote their original creations rather than adapt old characters/settings even if they have a record of success. Hell, many of them are currently writing for the floppies. That's why you see them crapping on old favorites like Obi-wan, Boba Fett, Luke, Han, etc.
The fact that we got the High Republic, which is pretty much just a discount Old Republic, instead of the actual Old Republic, I can't help but be reminded of that one meme. "Mom, can we have the Old Republic?" Mom: "We have the Old Republic at home." The Old Republic at home: The High Republic.
Honestly this is a dumb take, high Republic and old republic are two vastly different eras where the old republic is about exploration and adventure the old republic is war.
@@reniorjd Calm down, it's just a joke. It was mostly to express the frustration that many likely felt, waiting so long for Old Republic content, only for them to announce something that's kind of like the Old Republic but not really. Don't get me wrong, the High Republic has had some pretty decent stories in it so far, but that's part of what makes it so frustrating. Everytime they come out with a good High Republic story I think to myself "Why can't we get something like this for the Old Republic?" or they introduce an intriguing idea and think "This would be awesome idea to use in an Old Republic story!" The fact that they have talented authors coming out with some good High Republic stories shows that Disney is perfectly capable of giving us Old Republic content that at least approaches the quality of the original, they just choose not to. Part of me worries that they'll end up using up all the best ideas and creative energy on the High Republic era before we ever get to the Old Republic, so then the Old Republic era will end up feeling lackluster by comparison because of how much the High Republic will have outshined it by that point. It's similar to how Djin Djiarn ended up outshining Boba Fett, the original Mandalorian, in popularity and notoriety. Yes, I know Boba Fett is not technically a Mandalorian, but a lot of the imagery that everyone commonly associates with Mandalorians originated from him. The High Republic has already kind of taken away and limited some of what they will be able to do with Old Republic stories going forward. In the High Republic era, they are only just now starting to explore and colonize the Outer Rim of the galaxy apparently, meaning that Old Republic stories that originally happened on Outer Rim worlds are no longer possible and will have to be changed or rewritten to accommodate for those lore changes. The technology in the High Republic also looks and feels too old to be something that only happened 200 years before the movies. It's more like something you would expect to see 2000 years ago, not 200. If they have it looking that old just 200 years ago, than what's everything going to look like in the Old Republic era 4000 years ago? Are we going to be in Stone Age times?
Disney: 'Sooner or later, the High Republic will be more appreciated and LOVED than the Old Republic!' FandoM(aul): 'Unfortunately for you, history will not see it that way ...'
Lucasfilm seems to hate any story they haven't come up with themselves. The only way they would do anything in the old Republic era is if they reworked it into something that maybe had the characters (in name and likeness) from the original stories but scrap everything else. they would then turn it into something nearly unrecognizable. and it's true they would only go that way if they were desperate to make money after their other in house projects failed.
I think if they ever did anything with KOTOR they would keep only the names, not the likenesses. For example, given what modern Hollywood is like, I'd be astonished if they _didn't_ turn Bastila into a black lesbian (quite possibly morbidly obese for extra diversity points).
Disney has proven time and time again they dont understand star wars I'm at the point where I have literally Zero expectations for anything new being released The EU is the Real Canon anyway so honestly nothing Disney does outside of 1 Sells star Wars to someone who genuinely cares about it 2 Re "Canonize's" the EU and let it continue as it was going before Disney canceled it in 2014 Will make me care about what they do next
They don't want to touch the old republic era because pre-Disney fans like that era. Remember they don't like us because we want to hold them to standards and don't want earth Twitter politics in star wars.
Let's be real, it's because the people in charge at lucasfilm haven't heard of the old republic and its a good thing Disney haven't gotten around to doing it yet because that means they're yet to RUIN it I hope the KOTOR remake never sees the light of day because it'd be like drawing a stick figure and calling it the Mona Lisa
I was never asking for a KOTOR remake, anyway, I still play the original game. I want new EU as Legends novels and comic books, but they're still as stubborn as ever.
Because they wouldn’t be able to shoehorn in the names Skywalker, Kenobi, or Palpatine. I’m more annoyed by the “High Republic” era being a mere couple hundred years before the movies. The Republic lasted for over 10,000 years, and they think that makes sense? Their grasp of time is as bad as their grasp of astronomical distances.
The few nods and references made to it are good enough for me. Disney has sort of acknowledged they exist and with the current leadership thats all they should do they have an exceedingly poor track record with legacy characters.
Considering how Disney keeps disrespecting the Star Wars universe, I highly doubt that fan backlash is the reason they won't dive into the Old Republic stuff
What gets me most about the Post Empire Era is how many female characters like Mara Jade and Jaina Solo they removed entirely when representation was supposed to be a focus :/ The idea of focusing on women force users for the sequel movies was a good idea, and not something we'd seen much of from the previous movies. I just wish they actually did a good job with it. I wonder if they even read EU novels and comics before they decided to scrap them.
@@SilverSpireZ and then you have @$$ like Rian who pulls an old EU book to justify his work, despite the fact those weren't canon anymore. I'm sure the traitor, Pablo Hidalgo, helped him find it.
When Disney said they were treating the old EU as out of continuity, I originally thought theh were going to use it as a base to write the sequel trilogy. Now, it is a what if Disney didn't let KK and her cronies ruin the franchise.
@@SilverSpireZ yeah that was pretty shocking to me. I'm a fairly casual star wars enjoyer and I've never actually read anything in the EU but even I knew what the expanded universe was. Not to mention the fucking leader of the Rebellion is a woman. And alot of Star Wars Cultures are Matriarchal in nature when they aren't neutral to gender.
2011 and most people forget about it either because they haven't played it or haven't played it in a very long time. Pretty sure it peaked in 15 and 16 with those expansions.
I once wished for a Darth Bane movie. Now god I hope they never touch it. I can imagine disneys ‘ Bane’ as a bumbling idiot, constantly being told what to do by ‘never wrong’ Zannah….the horror 😮
Disney canon adaptations from EU mostly pluck the character from there and change everything around them to the point of the stories being unrecognisable. People don't just like Thrawn trilogy because it had Thrawn, they liked the story it told. If Revan is handled the same with all of his supporting cast being thrown into trash why would people care about getting Revan alone?
Even Zahn himself in recent interview forgot that HE tied-in Outbound Flight with Yuuzhan Vong because he had a beef with how NJO writers handled the Chiss Ascendancy. Disney hired for him to write 9 books about Thrawn, as if Zahn isn't responsible for dozen of other characters that people liked from EU, including Jaina and Jacen.
The height of my love for star wars was right before George Lucas sold the franchise. I was playing Swtor, and watching The Clone Wars, and was excited for more, but now, despite being mostly ignored by Disney, Swtor and the Old Republic Era don't really have the same magic as before. You'd think that the low quality of the recent Disney outings would heighten my regard for the original expanded lore. . .instead I feel burnt out on Star Wars. Am I the only one who feel like the more Star Wars we get, the less reason there is to care about it? I'm just so tired of the constant stream of nothing.
Hey @thor, for those who saw the OT, what do you think people thought the prequels would have looked like? I’m re-watching the OT right now, and what strikes me is how in the context of the 70s/80s, there is a lot that implies the prequels were much different than what we ended up getting. While I like how the prequels turned out- corniness and all, I can’t help but wonder about certain details that would’ve fit much differently in peoples minds- such as the Jedi of the Republic wearing armor, more akin to knights of yore, rather than the desert robes that ben was wearing. Or all Jedi lightsabers being blue, and Luke’s green only being because it was synthetic. Or Palme dying much later into their kid’s lives; or even what the “clone wars” were. And things like that.
The problem with the High Republic era is that (like everything coming out of KK's Lucasfilm) it sucks. It's low-quality garbage. Lucasfilm has showed that they're uninterested by the original, pre-Disney properties and they just want to borrow elements from the franchise to do their own thing. Personally, I'm convinced that it's just a question of money / the payment of royalties. Lucasfilm is taking the Disney approach (they were probably ordered to do that) and doing everything in their power to not have to pay non-Disney artists for their work. The Old Republic is 100% a non-Disney IP, therefor, there is no chance they will ever touch it. In fact, the High Republic is pretty much Disney's bootleg version of the Old Republic, borrowing from it as much as it can without being too obvious and avoiding lawsuits or the payments of royalties... Sadly, this goes hand-in-hand with the "lowest possible cost" Disney approach when it comes to paying their own artists, meaning that they recruit only the lowest-paid staff and writers for their projects, making it impossible for anything good to be produced... This approach might work for the Disney Channel... but it fails everywhere else, which explains Disney and Lucasfilm's current fall from grace. And I'm not even talking about Disney's totalitarian approach to story-telling, which chokes any possible creativity out of the people working for them.
I'd rather they leave the Old Republic alone. With the way everything they have done so far is going downhill, I don't want to see such a great period in the Star Wars timeline destroyed.
@@saberiandream316 Kathleen Kennedy has demonstrated she doesn't know that ANY Star Wars material outside of the movies and TV shows exists. I might even be giving her too much credit for knowing Old Republic games exist, assuming she would have had to greenlight the KOTOR remake, but it's possible she has one of her underlings taking care of games for her and isn't directly involved. Filoni at least seems to know about the old EU and fan favorite characters therein, enough to integrate some version of some of them into his shows. Chances are, the 501st was hired to be extras at the end of Mando season one because Filoni knew about them. In Rebels and Mando, he featured the Imperial Transport, which had previously existed only as one of the earliest Star Wars toys. He made use of fan-beloved Ralph McQuarrie preproduction painting designs to give Rebels an authentic pre-Original-Trilogy design sense. All this shows that he has above-average knowledge of the Star Wars fan experience, in general, so it stands to reason he knows full well what the Old Republic is and who the fan favorite characters are there, too. You can probably criticize some of his writing and directing choices (I know I do), but you can't legitimately accuse him of not knowing, at least at a high level, all the constituent parts of Star Wars over the years. Does that sum it up well enough for ya?
Lucasfilm is avoiding the old republic because they know fans love The Old Republic. Don't worry though, one day they'll be ready to go there will be to destroy the legacy of it.
Since when has Lucasfilm cared about pissing off fans? Everything they've done is trying to push out the old fans so they can bring in new ones. This strategy has been 50% successful. Too bad there aren't any new fans.
I am certain there are Disney executives who would hate the idea of the High/Old Republic becoming super successful/popular. Cause they have already invested billions into the sequel era for the theme parks and already it's having a hard time competing with both OG Star Wars and the F&F verse. A successful High/Old Republic could very well be the final nail in the coffin and force them to invest away from the sequel era in the parks, which would mean billions more that need to be spent.
The High Republic is Disney's original creation so of course they want it to succeed. It's still fairly new so there isn't a lot of content for it yet.
I also think the overwhelming control duology fans (SW fans who think absolutely everything outside of ep 4/5 completely sucks) had over the sequels and presumably a lot the direction disney has taken with SW, I suspect that's not a team who want to or know how to handle the Old Republic era. This team has also been weak when it comes to the big picture lore and stories (i.e.: what is this war about?) and since the Old Republic era is all about that big picture worldbuilding stuff I can see them not wanting to put the work in on that
It's kinda sad that George Lucas made such a cynical move by selling Star Wars to Disney. He had to know what Disney was and how it functioned. Jeff Smith was approached by Disney to sell them Bone and he declined because he knew what would happen to his creation if Disney got their grubby hands on it. Lucas must not have cared as much about his creation.
In 2012 Disney was seen in a good light still and Marvel was still at its peak of interest. So no George likely had no idea this is what would become of Star Wars. South Park had them pegged long before the rest of us caught on.
Everything Disney touches turns to garbage. Why the hell would any fan of TOR want them to start ruining this too is beyond me. Leave it alone. It's bad enough they're heading back to the beginning of the Jedi order now to rewrite that.

Yeah that'd be nice, unfortunately Avellone is no longer with the company and what little I've read about that suggests it was personal beef and he has no desire to work with them again because of it.
The real reason is that they know they can't make a good movie that'll bring more fans. So they resort to milking the established characters, use them as bait for fans to give them money.
Wonder if Bioware has any rights to TOR as their authors were the ones who created the story and the iconic characters. As we know, even after the sale, George still gets a small cut of the merchandise of his legacy characters and creations (i.e.Luke, Death Star toys sold etc). It's one of the reasons why they undermined the originals ("let the past die") whenever they can. Disney does not share, even if it means cutting their nose to spite their face such as making their theme park attraction all Disney-era and thus far less appealing and less likely to earn money. Disney prefers to make $5 if they keep it all themselves rather than $10 if they have give $1 to George. If someone else is going to earn money as well from Revan, Bastila, Exile etc. that's a good reason for them not to do anything with it other than a game remake.
Disney Ster Wers was dead from the start. But Star Wars is alive and well. Because Star Wars is everything before Disney Ster Wers. So, regardless of what they "produce" it means nothing to me, I gave it a chance and they spit in my face.
I hope they DO continue to ignore the old republic. We can say goodbye to SWTOR as a game if they ever move into that era. Disney doesn't like to share.
I don't personally care about seeing a Revan (or version of the character) feature in new SW (the way Thrawn has been brought into it - not judging Thrawn either!). I just think that, playing SWTOR (comes after KotoR stories), there's a metric poop ton of room for a bunch of stories that take place in a universe where there are a lot of sith and jedi. you can literally tell any story/stories you want. it doesn't have to be, nor should it be, a single linear story the way Luke's story is b/c he's the only jedi in the galaxy! The RPGs and MMO have done the world building. no need for "new special powers" or "mary suing your way around" or "cloning schemes." you have Andor-like drama amongst the mundanes. you have any number of possibilities with bounty hunters and hutts. and, of course, you have drama within and between the force orders (sith/jedi). there's no stupid space between space. no giant force frog shamans. *I cannot say this often enough: just a 2-5min cgi clip from BW is filled with more dramatic tension and better action sequences than ANYTHING I've ever seen on screen* including the (quite good) prequel choreography amongst force fights, and the mundane fights in Andor that make ample use of space and angles to keep the scenes under budget.
Yes, you are 100% correct. Those cgi Old Republic scenes are some of the best Star Wars content in existence and it’s not even close. Im surprised that more people don’t talk about them. I must have watched that sacking of Coruscant by Malgus one like 100 times 😆
I thought the High Republic depicted the era when a teenager Yoda experimented with natural herbs and had a bat trip where he glimpsed into the future a galaxy devastated by the Sith Emperor Darth Mouse and his apprentices, knights of the apocalypse, K.K., J.J. and R.J.
@@CrazyxEnigma If they did they'd completely miss the entire arc of her character. A big point they would absolutely butcher is how she sought to defeat her enemies by proving her teachings true. I admired that so much about her and they'd utterly ruin it.
The Old Republic would only be good if they can get Peter Jackson to do it. It's too epic for most directors and Lucas sadly won't touch it or come back.
Canon information stated exclusively in a reference book is prone to change. There may be a new Timelines book released that contradicts some aspects of Star Wars: Timelines.
Hey Thor, I know this debate has been going on for about 9 years now, but what's your opinion on Commander Fox killing Fives in Season 6 of The Clone Wars?
Used to be, I'd say the only thing they need to do is make a movie or series out of SWTOR or KOTOR. Nowadays though, it's gone past that. Now, they'd need to make that movie or series, make it good enough that it's nearly 100% positive reception, and then I might consider watching it (and judging from some past polls, others think that way too). They've got too far beyond the pale for too long to be trusted with anything like that.
I think the reason they’ve avoided the Old Republic era is really obvious. They have the Old Republic game still going, which is set in the Legends continuity. They’ve already loosely been treating the old lore of that period as soft canon this whole time. They freely reference it in modern Star Wars, and treat it as some combination of murky ancient history and mythology. I think that’s just the smartest way of handling it, as that’s probably the one part of the old canon pretty much everyone agrees should be left the hell alone, because it’s pretty much perfect. That also works just fine, because it’s set so far back from the modern timeline that it really doesn’t create any issues to treat it like a sort of soft, mythologized ancient history of either the Legends or current canon. So… they just leave it alone, and have even shown a great degree of reverence for it, and I’m glad that’s been their strategy.
I think what’s even more annoying is the fact that they barely use the high republic. Like at least use high republic in these shows and movies if you’re not going to do the old republic
First off, the direction they are taking Star Wars and their handling of customer service and public relations, they have crippled the public's interest in Star Wars. Secondly, very few of their stories feel connected, genuine, or original. These shows, save for a few, seem to be far more MeToo first and story second, just very disconnected and political. Third, the movies and shows seem to be the Chinese Knockoff versions of one or more stories we had in Legends. Rogue One and Dark Forces, for example. The only unique ones that are worth watching would be The Mandalorian, Rebels, and The Clone Wars.
I think they're actually being quite smart about ignoring The Old Republic. Disney already pissed off a majority of fans with their execution of the sequel trilogy and even some more with their execution of the high republic comics and books. If they manage to fail their execution of making good canon The Old Republic stories, they will immediately piss off the rest of the star wars fan-base that disliked the other stories I mentioned. There's also still enough stories from The Old Republic that most fans can easily integrate into the new canon, SWTOR can easily be seen as mostly canon if you just add in crystal bleeding instead of synthetics. I think it really just stems from not wanting to fail, again.
I think they avoided Old Republic because of either arrorgance thinking they could make their woke garbage successful or they have as much contempt for KOTOR as they have shown for Luke Skywalker and the OT!
Disney Star Wars will never be as good as Old Republic. Books, games, all of it was made with passion by people who love and care about this universe. You can't recreate that with "the new hot thing" writers and producers that have never even seen the OT.
“There’s no source material. We don’t have comic books. We don’t have 800-page novels. We don’t have anything..." - Kathleen Kennedy on producing new SW films.
@Saberian Dream huge difference. Filoni understands the deeper meanings in Star Wars and understands the characters and the the canon surrounding them. He may make some decisions to change those things, but he is very well versed. Kennedy on the other hand, doesn't have the first clue
@@StraightOtohGunga Filoni is a VERY selfish creator who makes his EU knockoffs worse in the process. He's a con man and what he does is the same disrespect Disney has for Star Wars as a whole.

The High Republic era takes place in a time period where nothing beyond civil conflicts on planets can happen. They actually decided to make books about what is the most boring era of Star Wars by virtue of it being the era of "1000 years of peace" like TPM opening crawl says. If Sith show up they spit in the face of the secretive Darth Bane Rule of Two. Hell they have shown they don't mind doing that since they decided to have Obi-Wan and Vader fight for a second time. It was so much better when They hadn't seen each other since Mustafar because that's where Vader was truly born. Making Obi-Wan go all over the place and abandoning his mission on Tatooine was a stupid move. Disney would ruin the Old Republic and spit in the faces of all the people who made that era. They already did with Tom Veitch by making an inferior Dark Empire and naming thar one Clone Wars spin-off "Tales of the Jedi" to bury his work with the Tales of the Jedi books and comics. Disney canon is trash and it's gonna keep spinning it's wheels like this because they made too many mistakes early on by replacing what was already loved.
I’ve been trying to convince one of my friends to play kotor for a while (mind you I didn’t grow up on it other than the rule of 2 book I got as a present, I always heard about it and played it a few years ago but loved it even if I was a bit influenced), and I told her that it feels exactly like Star Wars and also feeling completely different. Then I said it almost feels like if the plot of the first KOTOR was the plot of the movie Star Wars when it came out in the 70s, and then years later they made a sequel game the way KOTOR was that ended up telling the story of the OT, nothing would change in terms of how popular it got and how favorable the response of either would be. I know that’s just my opinion but when I put that in words I realized how true I think it is. I told her it’s similar to how at certain points in history, completely different societies would experience similar advancements in technology or society while being completely independent and even ignorant of each other. It’s like KOTOR and the OT are two defining examples of Star Wars while being about completely different things and dealing with completely different characters and eras. I’m still not even totally sure I’m conveying my feeling correctly. Luke Skywalker was always the focal point of the franchise, the original main character, and although Anakin became more of the soul since all the films revolved around the story of his fall and redemption, Luke was still always the legacy of his story and represented the hope that carried forward. But I feel like Revan has a solid case for being as much of a “main character” as Luke does. I think the entire franchise could have and does in some ways revolve around him. And what’s crazy is how it came years after a lot of other established stories and without much input from George Lucas. It just came from talented and passionate people who knowingly or not revived the exact same feelings the original movie did in an entirely unique way. Almost as though they could have been the ones to make a new hope, in a different universe. I’m not fool enough to claim they have nearly as much of a claim to Star Wars as George does but they certainly have more sway than many others credited with contributing something to the universe. The force awakens felt like a revival at first, until in hindsight it seemed more like a bad knock off that was shown in theaters. I think KOTOR brought up the same wonder and nostalgic feelings that a Star Wars reboot movie should have evoked.
Kotor succeeded at distilling everything Star Wars into a video game and making the person playing the game the protagonist. It blew pretty much everyone away who played it at the time. One of Bioware's best outings, a pity they aren't the same company anymore.
"why Disney/Lucasfilm is mostly ignoring The Old Republic? " Because they can not write a coherent and interesting story with interesting characters that behave logically, without trying to be politically correct.
I still listen to your rants because I like you Thor but not because I care about anything to do with this Twilight Zone version of Star Wars. I wait for the day of the purge when Kathelene Kennedy and all her minions are gone, burried and forgotten (she is to me like the White Witch in the Chronicals of Narnia, always winter but never Christmas!)
@@saberiandream316 yes, to get better there will have to be a new total purge of all those activists that have infested Lucasfilm since Kathelene Kennedy took over. I clearly remember how it was reported that as soon as Disney bought Lucasfilm over 150 employees were fired from Lucasfilm together with the shut down of LucasArt, stopping most of the video games in production like Level 1313, cancelled the Clone Wars animated episodes that were still in production and a few other things leaving the company depleted of much of its core artists and creative individuals. It was an interesting "purge" that got little to no attention by the media (I wonder why?)
There seems to be a pattern with LF where when they are holding back certain characters or stories it's bc they are planning to use them in the future -possibly. Like Barris Offee - she's overdue for the continuation of her story. Filoni has said more than once that her story isn't over. Same might go for the Old Republic era. But more than anything, I think it's likely they are terrified of going there - lol - they are probably aware how beloved Revan is - and that's a no-win situation for them - they'll catch crap for trying to stay faithful to the story & they'll catch crap if they change anything - better for them if they just let sleeping dogs lie.
@@saberiandream316 she had no character until filoni did something with her regardless if you agree with what he did thats a fact. he has all the room to talk compared to you lmao
Simple. It is an old lore with an established fan base and a few games that flushed out the setting including the second game handling the issue of both the light and dark side of the force a lot better than their current attempts. If they did content then they would rewrite it... And thus annoy fans... And if they want to rewrite something to make modern political garbage then they would redue the original series just to throw Luke into the garbage. The old Republic isn't the playground they can easily trash and thus it is ignored.
Part of it I think is they want to take advantage of the orginal Star Wars time period while Ewan, Hayden, and others are all still young enough for them to make content with
Honestly, it's a good thing they're staying away from the Old Republic.
Nice disneymagination of the characters
They can touch it when Kennedy leaves.

It's sad.

One of the biggest critiques of Disney's lore building, is that they underestimated what came before it.
Not only underestimated but seemingly ignored it completely. How else can KK justify her comments that they had nothing to go off of when creating the ST, like the EU never contained any post ROTJ content…or that George had handed over his treatments.

For the same reason they ignore the vast majority of the EU.
They didn't do it, therefore it doesn't exist. After all, Kennedy said - "We don't have 800 page tomes to work from."
I also have zero doubt that the only reason Thrawn was brought into Disney Wars was because of Feloni and perhaps Favereau. Kennedy, if left her her devices, would surely have said - "Did it happen under George? Yes? Then into the garbage it goes! I'm the boss now!"

Kathleen "Oath-Breaker" Kennedy is in charge of Lucasfilm, but I think she honestly believes that Feloni is creating brand new original stuff when he brings Thrawn into existence into Disney Wars - and of course his personal Waifu, Ashoka - or however it's spelled.
I'm glad they've ignored it. They can't handle it yet. Please Disney, keep keeping your grubby mouse mitts off Old Republic.

"Mom, can we have the Old Republic?"
Mom: "We have the Old Republic at home."
The Old Republic at home: The High Republic.
Honestly this is a dumb take, high Republic and old republic are two vastly different eras where the old republic is about exploration and adventure the old republic is war.
@@reniorjd they're both also set in two different periods of time within the Star Wars timeline.

The only way they would do anything in the old Republic era is if they reworked it into something that maybe had the characters (in name and likeness) from the original stories but scrap everything else. they would then turn it into something nearly unrecognizable. and it's true they would only go that way if they were desperate to make money after their other in house projects failed.
I think if they ever did anything with KOTOR they would keep only the names, not the likenesses. For example, given what modern Hollywood is like, I'd be astonished if they _didn't_ turn Bastila into a black lesbian (quite possibly morbidly obese for extra diversity points).
Because they have to pay George a royalty every time they use a character that was invented before Disney era. Of course they hate it.

I once wished for a Darth Bane movie. Now god I hope they never touch it. I can imagine disneys ‘ Bane’ as a bumbling idiot, constantly being told what to do by ‘never wrong’ Zannah….the horror 😮
Filoni already ruined Darth Bane long before Disney.
Well, too many ignorant people act like making elements from the EU "canon" again make it the same. I can't stand it.

As with any EU content, they don’t want to pay the royalties…
Lets be real: they'd just ruin it. Also its actuallly pretty hard to adapt since its mostly video games and those are kinda cursed for adaptions.
Second this. For anyone who was a kid during the PT it's almost impossible to imagine it being anything other than what it was.
Harsh but accurate summary.
I'd rather they leave the Old Republic alone. With the way everything they have done so far is going downhill, I don't want to see such a great period in the Star Wars timeline destroyed.
Kathleen Kennedy probably doesn't even know any Old Republic material outside of the Bioware games exists.

@@saberiandream316 Kathleen Kennedy has demonstrated she doesn't know that ANY Star Wars material outside of the movies and TV shows exists.

Since when has Lucasfilm cared about pissing off fans? Everything they've done is trying to push out the old fans so they can bring in new ones. This strategy has been 50% successful. Too bad there aren't any new fans.
The KOTOR remake is destined to canonize Old Republic, just you wait.

My favorite thing about KOTOR is that Disney hasn’t touched it.
Because Disney SUCKS at world building.
I dont think im ready for disney and kathleen kennedy to ruin the old republic too
The Old Republic should not be touched until Disney has been destroyed forever
I hope DIsney will never touch The Old Republic era, they should stay away forever from it.
I hope they DO continue to ignore the old republic. We can say goodbye to SWTOR as a game if they ever move into that era. Disney doesn't like to share.
Most likely because they know how sacred that era is and they can’t fuck it up. High Republic at least is a much safer era to explore.
The RPGs and MMO have done the world building. no need for "new special powers" or "mary suing your way around" or "cloning schemes."
you have Andor-like drama amongst the mundanes. you have any number of possibilities with bounty hunters and hutts. and, of course, you have drama within and between the force orders (sith/jedi). there's no stupid space between space. no giant force frog shamans.
I thought the High Republic depicted the era when a teenager Yoda experimented with natural herbs and had a bat trip where he glimpsed into the future a galaxy devastated by the Sith Emperor Darth Mouse and his apprentices, knights of the apocalypse, K.K., J.J. and R.J.
Royalties. Need control so focus on new not old deals. $$
Imagine the feminist nightmare they'd turn Kreia into...
I don't think they'd touch Kreia with a 10ft tall pole lol. She tried to kill The Force and The Force is female now so...
Keep them away from KOTOR.
Thor, cover how Star Wars: Timelines book already changed Old Republic lore in canon beyond recognition. So they're already trying to erase it.
Canon information stated exclusively in a reference book is prone to change. There may be a new Timelines book released that contradicts some aspects of Star Wars: Timelines.
What happened in that book? I only read Legends, not the Disney canon.
Star Wars is now a Multi-verse for Disney, it used to just be a far away galaxy. So confusing but… whatever 😮
Hey Thor,
I know this debate has been going on for about 9 years now, but what's your opinion on Commander Fox killing Fives in Season 6 of The Clone Wars?
Used to be, I'd say the only thing they need to do is make a movie or series out of SWTOR or KOTOR. Nowadays though, it's gone past that. Now, they'd need to make that movie or series, make it good enough that it's nearly 100% positive reception, and then I might consider watching it (and judging from some past polls, others think that way too). They've got too far beyond the pale for too long to be trusted with anything like that.
The KOTOR games were awesome
Please I hope they never touch The Old Republic.
You know why, cause Disney know it will be too many male dominant stories and if they add more women to this they will be ripped for it
I think they're actually being quite smart about ignoring The Old Republic.
I'd just prefer if they made up their own unique version of galactic history. They're so unoriginal and keep mooching off the EU.
She should have been let go right then and there
Kennedy says that and gets mocked. Filoni says he was doing the "canon bomb" the whole time and he's a hero. Star Wars fans are the WORST, man.
@@saberiandream316 I disagree, I think he has made some fantastic works and actually found ways to bring certain characters and elements back into the fold where Kennedy and Iger just tossed all of the EU in the trash
Andor's crew and director should do The Old Republic, if he does Kotors story it would be just too amazing.
@Darth Revan Agreed Lord Revan.

Filoni already spit on Bane before Disney.
That is where the Rian Johnson Trilogy will take place 🤣🤣🤣
If Disney ever make old republic stuff not going to do justice like games and comics did just fact also going to bastardized shit out of it.
"why Disney/Lucasfilm is mostly ignoring The Old Republic? "
Because they can not write a coherent and interesting story with interesting characters that behave logically, without trying to be politically correct.
That's assuming it gets better, not worse, when she goes. I feel like these issues are going to outlast her.
Disney StarWars is noncanon to me.
I am gald they aren't ruining the Old Republic.....yet.
They Don't Care they got what they wanted...Its over , We lost
Do you really trust current Disney to do justice to ToR era?
There seems to be a pattern with LF where when they are holding back certain characters or stories it's bc they are planning to use them in the future -possibly. Like Barris Offee - she's overdue for the continuation of her story. Filoni has said more than once that her story isn't over. Same might go for the Old Republic era. But more than anything, I think it's likely they are terrified of going there - lol - they are probably aware how beloved Revan is - and that's a no-win situation for them - they'll catch crap for trying to stay faithful to the story & they'll catch crap if they change anything - better for them if they just let sleeping dogs lie.
Filoni already messed up her character by turning her into a terrorist. He has no room to talk.
@@saberiandream316 ah so your one of those people who just says everything he does is bad and comment on every comment you disagree with... cringe
Part of it I think is they want to take advantage of the orginal Star Wars time period while Ewan, Hayden, and others are all still young enough for them to make content with
Yeah, I think this too.
