The Sith code is ultimately about breaking your bonds. And guess what! Marr did that by breaking the Sith code itself, a code that binds other Sith. It was a great Sith himself who said this accurate phrase which is perfect for the Sith code as a whole. "Ironic."
I’ve always thought that Marr has, perhaps unintentionally, been the only Sith who has truly conquered death. Not by immortality, not by artificially extending his life, not by sacrificing others for himself, not by sending his spirit to another body, but by simply no longer fearing it. No other true Sith has ever really done that.
"If only the Sith cared more about the Empire, there wouldn't be a new one every three seconds." -That gave me heartburn due to how powerful the truth of the Force is. Jesus dude.
Marr was quite literally the Mace Windu of the Dark side. Duty, focus, and precision in execution of his job make him the other tip of the spear to what Windu was Millenia later for the Jedi Council.
I'd imagine both Darth Marr and Mace Windu would have immense respect for one another when they learn about what their goals and philosophies are. Despite being on opposing sides.
Is there a Dark Side version of Vapaad? A dark side force user channeling the light side through them as a light side user channels the dark side through them.
Darth Marr is awesome, a true patriot that loved his country and his people. And hes not the only one, there was a lot of Sith from the old empire that fought for their people. Thats why i say the Darth Bane's sith was actually a downgrade, they became fully egoistical.
I would argue they became egotistical because they were only two now, so they could be as power hungry as they liked, they had plenty of room. I do largely agree that sith that are just angry and destructive are quite boring though, darth sion as an example. Sion was cool, but not massively interesting aside from the "literally too angry to die" part
He is not a true sith. He acknowledged the Jedi Code, accepted peace and oneness therefore ceasing to be Sith. Therefore denying the Sith Codes core tenets, peace is a lie.
I'm not so sure Mar transcended beyond Sithhood: so much as he became the purest embodiment of true Sith potential. All of the power combined of the dark side with a disciplined mind which didn't fall to madness, nihilism or cynicism. Mar commanded the force - the force did not command him, as where so many other Sith become corrupted and lose themselves. Mar adhered to the Sith code perfectly, passion - strength - power - freedom: and held true to that instead of allowing the enticements of power rule over him - he ruled himself, he was free.
Characters like Lana and Marr are what made me love playing LS Sith so much. The pragmatic, reasonable and honorable mentality of these Sith is such a refreshing and satisfying perspective, and yet they are still by no means "goody two shoes" as some people like to call them. They are still very much Sith and they still grasp for greater power, but for greater reasons than themselves. There's a conversation between Lana Beniko and a Jedi Master (sorry for spoilers) where she says the Sith Code teaches to aim for higher power, but it never specifies that one is obligated to do so through betrayal or murdering their master.
What you didn't fully cover but relates to him trying to strength the Empire and get them out of there old infighting ways was his view on aliens. The Sith Empire is primarily xenophobic with majority being slaves and only human and pure blooded Sith getting into higher standings in the Sith. Marr was against it and usually pushes for other alien Sith to be put on the council.
@@bloodysimile4893 Yeah which means Marr and Malgus are two sides of the same coin both saw The Sith Empire’s decline but went about how to change it differently Marr trying to from within while Malgus tried to go scorch Earth on it and rebuild it with him in charge.
My sith assassin (Darth Imperious) was so pissed when Malgus revolted. I've played him as a full on imperial loyalist who's trying to reform the Empire. But he's big on patience and bidding his time (actually knelt to Valkorion planning to backstab him later). So losing the other reformer besides Marr was a big blow. And he deeply mourned the loss of such a successful general as Darth Marr.
Another reason to love Darth Marr that you might have missed is how much he basically encapsulates the idea of fatherhood...or alternatively that of a drill sergeant. His purpose is to be the demon against the threat of his people with pure unadulterated brutality, yet also at every turn only engages in necessary pain (rather than sadism) for his people to emerge stronger. His pragmatism demands the best of his people (and himself) to win any obstacle that may come and to do so without forcing casualties for the sake of one's ego.
A good leader understands both their own strengths and weakness, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of those they command, to know how to best use them all. But a great leader also learns the strengths and weaknesses of their enemies, how best to combat them, and what they do better so that they can use it themselves. And Darth Marr, a guy I literally only heard about today with this video, was a great leader based on what I've heard.
This Gigachad version of Revan is the living proof that choosing the dark side does not mean you are evil, its just that you will have risks that you will become evil and die faster. That also does not mean light side itself was really all good, they can be cold and bad as well, only through balance can they achieve peace.
Yeah the Jedi were also very evil, their evil was just more hidden and systematic. They were fine with slave labor, whilst the sith code went against slavery. Jedi would kidnap children, and I'm pretty sure they would execute any that failed to past their tests
That reminds me of something curious. Bioware, after the sucess of KOTOR, developed Jade Empire. In it there are two philosohpies: the Open Palm and the Closed Fist, and they take inspiration on the Light and Dark side respectively. Although, for gameplay reasons, OP is the good path and CF is the evil path, by itself the Jade Empire universe specifies that both are neutral on a philosophical way. An Open Palm follower altruist act can both be to help someone in need, as well as make one owe favours. Avoiding to eliminate a threat, just because it wouldn't be the right thing, might allow time for such threat to grow more powerful. In comparison, the Closed Fist follower may refuse to help someone not out of malice, but in the belief the person either needs no help, or should grow stronger to deal with their troubles, or learn to deal with the result of their bad choices. The Closed Fist follower seeks independence and self improvement, and believes each and everyone is the master of their path.
Darth Marr is easily my favorite character in the entire SWTOR mmo. He’s not my favorite Old Republic character overall, but pretty damn close. As someone who went through the Sith Inquisitor storyline, Marr’s involvement was stellar from start to finish. I especially like the connection with him and Satele Shan.
@@jmgonzales7701 so he can have is own togruta padawan in is party, that or achieve "UNLIMITED POWAH!!!"(Sith lightning). Plus being official called a Darth rather than "emperor's wrath".
Marr is the embodiment of what siths could become if they stopped beings assholes and betraying each other every three minutes, the perfect sith in a sense that neither vitiate/valkorion or Palpatine could ever be, a cold and ruthless being of immense power like any good sith yet able to see when the doctrine he follows is wrong. If more powerful siths were like him there's no doubt the sith empire would have lived on and crushed the republic and jedis by the time of the movies.
@@Vigriff Sidious achieved that, though. It was his one miscalculation about Vader's loyalty that ended it all. Would he have just died of old age soon after that or discovered Plagueis's secret to immortality in time? And if the latter, how would he have eventually ended? He'd be the only living Force user left.
I'm later to the party but Palpatine saw the mistakes of the order, honestly every sith of the Banite Lineage saw. As Bane saw the mistakes of the brotherhood of shadows. As Millennial saw the the rule of 2 was debauchery, as Tenebrous saw that seeing the force with mysticism was dumb, as Gravid saw the dark side philosophy as dangerous, as Plagueis thought the rule of 2 limited the grand plan, and Palpatine saw the use of the force as a religion was dumb and the rule of 2 has been able to reach its plan so was no longer necessary.
@@Scrubermensch It is true, but those siths all made stupid mistakes that will eventually bring the end of the siths...something Marr wouldn't have done. this is why i loved SWTOR to this day it lets you play a sith like these too and its honestly epic from moments where a force relic reveals that you a SITH are stronger in the light side then a actual jedi master or moments where you try to not fight then spare two young jedi and they are just absolutely mystified by it its just so fun to be the absolute WILDCARD of the sith.
Only cowards run from death. The brave, the honorable, true warriors do not fight death but to have a honorable death. One that will be remembered. One that will bring glory to their people. Darth Marr knew this well.
Someone once said that Marr is essentially the Qui-gon Jinn of the Dark Side. Personally I heavily agree with this sentiment. Darth Marr is much more practical and takes necessary action for the betterment of his cause rather than act out of self interest. A similar thing could be said about Qui-gon who was so devoted to his faith in the force he even went against the Jedi Council’s wishes to follow it
Other Sith Lords must be salty that Darth Marr became one with the Force while they remain as bitter Force Ghosts unable to find any peace in death at all.
the funny thing about mar and what also what made him strong was that he was draconian in nature. the thing is he knew that he was draconian and thus used that natural nature of his as a fine knife instead of its usual club or bomb.
This is guys, this is the true definition and who we deserve to call "based". Another Sith Lord doesn't exactly cringe but this guy just decide to be different than others
Given the fact that they literally coexisted at the same time, and shortly after presumed death of Emperor Vitiate, Darth Malgus briefly took a stand on the Dark Council, replacing Darth Baras. At that Time, Marr and Malgus were overall equal, with, perhaps, Malgus getting a slight advantage. However the Eternal War shortly followed. While (I presume) Darth Acina's powerbase managed to preserve Malgus's body and later rebuild him into the next Wrath, Darth Marr died at the hands of Valkorion (a.k.a.) Vitiate. And after that Malgus lived to become, quite literally, the most powerful Sith of the Reconstructed (Or whatever its called) Sith Empire, before going rogue to (again). Right now this story is not Complete in the MMO, altho it is safe to say, Darth Malgus in his later stages of life (which is his 70s) is more powerful, though, not by a lot, than Darth Marr at the end of his life (who was in his 60s when struck down).
The idea that a Sith is driven by goals and a vision, a code of his own that drives him more than the base want of power. It makes him a compelling force in the Empire without compromising what he and it stand for. Power is a means to an end, not the end itself and that just automatically sets him apart from most Sith.
I bet when that Moff saw Marr’s uncovered face, he was so taken aback by its flawless beauty that it could best be described as a “religious experience”. So to see that same beatific face utter the words “You disappoint me” filled him with such shame & self-revulsion that he knew the only true course of action left was to remove his unworthy self from his Lord’s employ & vicinity (which meant existing in the same universe).
My very first character walked the balanced path and was an Empire patriot for the people of the Empire. Never leaning toward the light or dark. Marr felt like the only natural ally my first character had.
Hey now, my Inquisitor tried to make friends with Jedi as well. Didn't always work out but at least she tried. For real though, Marr was the example my Inq tried to emulate and follow, since he was the one who stepped into her defense and fully supported her joining the Council. After his death, I imagine she would want to continue his wishes of helping the Empire prosper. He wasn't around for long enough in my opinion, but he had the most impact on my Inquisitor's life.
Very similar to my SI, with the Empire freeing them from slavery, allowing them to finally take control of their life, my SI would swear eternal loyalty to the Empire. While he did take part in his own fair share of Sith infighting, the Empire's interests were paramount. Once ascended to the Dark Council, they would leave behind the infighting and turn their attention to the Republic. In time my SI would find not only an example, but an ally, a brother-in-arms in Marr. Where the Empire needed them, whether it be Makeb, Yavin 4, Ziost or Zakuul, they would go. Marr went out through blatant defiance, my SI chose to kneel, only to strike the traitorous Emperor down when possible. And when Valkorion tried to discredit Marr, when they tried to dismiss the Sith Empire as a failed experiment, it was nothing more than an insult and if it had been anyone else they would have been cut down before they even finished speaking.

From the Imperial side, I really like the original Keeper from the Imperial Agent's storyline. A respected leader who respected his subordinates and the og spymaster, detached professional, knowing that his work - cleaning up the mess those Sith morons make - is not a glamorous one, but it's the only thing that keeps the Empire from succumbing into utter chaos and disintegration. He was actually one of the few high-ranking Imperials that made my Agent see some hope for the Empire (for the record though, I have not yet finished the original storyline yet) Edit/Update: There was also this Sith lord, Medechas if I'm correct, who was tasked with securing the landing zone on Belsavis so that the Dread Masters could be safely escorted out of the planet. I liked his approach to the job - professional, preferred careful planning to brute force and simultaneusly got so much joy out of his work. A great man on the post. Also, there was this sergant from a side-quest at Dromund Kaas who's men where abducted by a mad (or more mad than a regular Sith) Sith lord. She cared for them almost like a mother, they in turn stayed utterly loyal to her and called her 'the Duchess'. Realy nice piece of story and another damn fine leader (despite losing part of her men to a Sith lord. I mean, there's only so much you can do about those maniacs when you're a non Force-sensitive)
Darth Marr, a Sith who rose to the heights of the Empire and would fight until his last breath to protect his people. He is, in my eyes, an example of what the Sith can and should strive to be and while Valkorion may have killed him, he is nothing compared to Marr.
nothing compared to marr? tenebrae is literally considered the most powerful and influential force user in the entire history of star wars, past and future.
Its canon that when the Outlander finds Satele. Ghost Marr starts pestering her to feed them. I can only assume he took one look at them and was like "damn, someone get this kid a burger. That carbonite nap did nothing for him"
I always saw Marr as the final evolution of a force sensitive. A Sith not bound by constant blunt cruelty and selfishness. Lawful evil as we call it. And not clouded and arrogant like a Jedi. Make no mistake. He is Sith and would kill without hesitation. He's a lot like Sidious. Realizing the value in people and having some restraint.

Instead of embracing the power of the dark side like the other sith, mar sees his role for a greater purpose.
Loved Darth Marr, getting to partner for him instantly felt like we were running around with a respectable older brother, he was the ideal of what I wanted my Sith Warrior to represent. Would've loved to see more of him.
My first play thru was as a Sith Inq and I was introduced to Marr as a Sith Inq. Man really knows how to treat you like a peer, as a fellow council member, and fully lets you know how tired he is of the Sith politics holding the empire back. Marr really knows how to make you feel special. Glad you're calling him a gigachad. That's exactly the right word. Back then I only knew him as bro. Because that's what he was.
If you think about it he conquered death through not fearing it in a way. He may not of been immortal but he sure as hell didnt go out in a way that he was against even if he had regrets
I wish they'd elaborate more on Gray Jedi as I love it as a concept. I even tried to go that route when I played KOTOR 2 after seeing Jolee in KOTOR. Unfortunately, the game doesn't reward you for doing that by locking you out of prestige classes... A shame going neutral is overall frowned upon.

Light Side Sith Warrior was a fascinating idea. Sith take the notion of passion leading to strength is accepted, but they never consider passions more complex than a basic lust for power.
Confusing the Jedi you encounter is the best part about being a Light Sith. (Warrior storyline especially) You can sometimes see their brains breaking.
through his passion he found his strength, through that strength his power, and with that power he found his victory, with that victory his chains were broken and the force freed him.
@@leenaleewitch3731 even in death marr was far behind vitiate.. a person who can suck the force out of a planet leaving nothing but a void is definitely stronger, but also the fact that vitiate wanted to consume the entire force in the galaxy with his galaxy wide ritual.
It’s as if Lana and Darth Marr manipulate the dark side to their benefit instead of letting the dark side consume them and turning them to madness and fury. They were rational yet still followed the Sith doctrine.
There is also Lord Praven from the Jedi Knight main story. He's a sith pureblood who put honor above everything else, even though he turn to the light side (if you chose) he puts a point that the sith were not honorable at all and wanted to change.
I remember the time he appointed me to the Dark Council. And that time we fought Revan. And that time we rammed a burning dreadnought into the Eternal Fleet. He was a good man, and a friend.
Not sure he became friends with the Jedi order so much as came to understand them and their beliefs. His meeting with Satele Shan following his death meant they were both enlightened to the Jedi and Sith ways...Jedi believing in peace and justice, Sith believing in passion and ambition. This meant they saw that both can work together for the greater good and they were indirectly a representation of the Eternal Alliance.
Your last words about Marr - "Duty, loyalty, self-reflection, adaptability" - bring to mind another Sith who used four things to describe herself. “Knowledge, answers, truth, the Force: these are the things I hold dear. Titles don't interest me." I would absolutely LOVE to see you do a video on Lana Beniko, though preferably not speculating on any connections to Darth Nul just yet. She seems very much like Darth Marr, and she goes a step further than he does, given that she gives her loyalty fully to the Alliance and is willing to turn away and against the Sith Empire. I doubt it's a coincidence that her surname is an anagram for 'Kenobi.' Thank you for sharing this video on Darth Marr, who is absolutely a wonderful character and an exemplary Lord of the Sith. I've been a fan of your videos for some time, but I think you've just earned yourself a new subscriber! ^_^
Darth Marr was literally the perfect definition of what a true Sith should be. Not a Sith Lord who is power hungry, world domination or seeking immortality, but someone who cared about his Empire and his own people. Almost all the Sith Lords always have the same goal in their mind, Power. But Darth Marr wasn’t that, he was always loyal, compassionate and respectful to his Empire and especially the Jedi Order. He even respected Grand Master Satele Shan as an equal later on in the story, and even became a Force Ghost after his death, which is exceptionally rare for a Sith or a Darksider. Despite having less screen time in the game than most of the characters, Darth Marr really has one of the best and interesting character arcs ever written in the Star Wars Universe. Darth Marr would’ve been the perfect Emperor of the Sith Empire. Even if he didn’t want to be the leader of the Empire, he really does have the potential to become a true emperor. Darth Marr will always be one of my absolute favourite characters in Star Wars.

@@princeimrahil6557 I see you're a person of culture as well.
I beg to differ, he improved the sith, as sith. However it came at the cost of the sith empire
I do largely agree with your point though. Villains who are like Marr and Malgus are the best
He is not a true sith. He acknowledged the Jedi Code, accepted peace and oneness therefore ceasing to be Sith. Therefore denying the Sith Codes core tenets, peace is a lie.
@@DM5550Z By this logic Darth Vader wasnt a sith because, in the end he renouced his sith side... Marr was a sith while he lived.
And also allowed elements of the Jedi Code to colour his perspective where it didn’t contradict.
@@rustkarl As Kreia would put it, "To believe in an ideal is to be willing to betray it"
Unfortunately, he still suffered because of his immersion in the dark side.
@@Elyseon to be fair, he did it to keep his people alive

I miss him every day. The Empire hasn't been the same without him.
Darth Malgus also had the same mind set. He see the xenophobic in the empire as and infighting as what was destorying the empire.
@@bloodysimile4893 Yeah which means Marr and Malgus are two sides of the same coin both saw The Sith Empire’s decline but went about how to change it differently Marr trying to from within while Malgus tried to go scorch Earth on it and rebuild it with him in charge.
yeah i wouldnt be part of the sith empire.....
I like other aliens too
Another reason to love Darth Marr that you might have missed is how much he basically encapsulates the idea of fatherhood...or alternatively that of a drill sergeant.
Just as darkness can cloud. Light can blind.
@@user-nm1lx8qb3u Yes.
It is not choosing the dark side that makes you evil, but forgetting that you have a choice
They would definitely have a higher chance of conquering the galaxy if they did follow his example.
@@Vigriff Sidious achieved that, though. It was his one miscalculation about Vader's loyalty that ended it all.
Would be nice to have a What if.. about what would have happened if Vader didn't turn or if Sidious saw it coming. If he got rid of both Luke and Vader.

12:08 "Only death does duty end."
Marr would totally be perfect as a Space Marine Librarian, and specifically a Dark Angels Librarian due to his loyalty to the Empire above all.
Only cowards run from death. The brave, the honorable, true warriors do not fight death but to have a honorable death. One that will be remembered. One that will bring glory to their people. Darth Marr knew this well.
Darth Marr was a true Sith Lord because he was true to the Empire and the will of the Force.
Darth Marr was just a smart businessman and politician , reward competence and punish incompetence.
Someone once said that Marr is essentially the Qui-gon Jinn of the Dark Side. Personally I heavily agree with this sentiment. Darth Marr is much more practical and takes necessary action for the betterment of his cause rather than act out of self interest. A similar thing could be said about Qui-gon who was so devoted to his faith in the force he even went against the Jedi Council’s wishes to follow it
"Driven to Sudoku"... that's a new one.
Other Sith Lords must be salty that Darth Marr became one with the Force while they remain as bitter Force Ghosts unable to find any peace in death at all.
The only Sith Lord that most other Sith would gladly serve in his vision of the Empire and actually serve him
the funny thing about mar and what also what made him strong was that he was draconian in nature. the thing is he knew that he was draconian and thus used that natural nature of his as a fine knife instead of its usual club or bomb.
Lord Marr, my Sith Inquisitor considered him a Ally and close Friend.
This is guys, this is the true definition and who we deserve to call "based". Another Sith Lord doesn't exactly cringe but this guy just decide to be different than others
It would be interesting to know how Marr would measure up against Darth Malgus.
Although the Dark Side rarely breaks the chain and sets people free, Marr is an unique example how a truly free Sith can be.
Easily one of my favorite sith of all time. He earned my respect as The Wrath and my admiration as The Commander.
Lana Beniko and Darth Marr were my 2 favorite characters. I just loved seeing them throughout the game and could listen to them for hours
Ah yes. Fellow darth imperious mains.

Darth Marr was free by not denying death and becoming one with the force. In the end he truly embodied “the force shall set me free”
He truly deserves the title of Darth. By accepting the inevitability of death he truly conquered it.
He was actually one of the few high-ranking Imperials that made my Agent see some hope for the Empire (for the record though, I have not yet finished the original storyline yet)
Edit/Update: There was also this Sith lord, Medechas if I'm correct, who was tasked with securing the landing zone on Belsavis so that the Dread Masters could be safely escorted out of the planet.
