That church you went into was a great find! I looked it up. Holy Baptistery of Saint Lydia of Philippi, completely in 1974. It definitely looks new. It's Byzantine Revival, which has dominated exclusively in Greece after WWII, and the "fat" shape of the church is very post-WWII (before WWII, churches are almost exclusively long aisled basilicas). What's remarkable about this church is that the art inside is exquisitely done. Most post-WWII church art is very low-quality. Until about WWII, it was common for the church to hire artists that had formal art school training, and they would do all kinds of art, from Byzantine Revival to Neoclassical and Romanticism, Baroque in the Ionian, etc. After WWII. the church stuck to just one style of art, its own interpretation of "Byzantine" and all artists were trained by the church in that style. So, in the 60s, 70s, we got all these cookie-cutter mediocre churches. This one is very exceptional for its time, because the art is stunning; this artist did an excellent take on Byz Revival, and the architecture is great too. Great find!!
Metsovo: that church is medieval, but it was destroyed and modified over the centuries. The exterior is typical local architecture. Interior: Epirus has these subtle Renaissance influences, because nearby is the Ionian coast/islands which had the Renaissance under Venetian control, and some of that influence traveled to inland Epirus. So, the interior architecture, art, frescoes, etc, are a mishmash of medieval-Byzantine, Renaissance, and 19th & 20th centuries, as they kept repairing/modifying the church over the centuries. Glad you stepped inside that one too!
Good to know, thanks for the info.
Epirus also had Venetian rule. It had also Armatolous that were based in Agrafa (unregistered) witch was never under Ottoman rule. See also Dionysios Skylosophos and "Koinon of the Zagorisians "
@@aokiaoki4238 Coastal Epirus, yes. Hence I pointed out "Ionian coast/islands" 🙂 Skylosophos led a revolt against the Ottomans, and fought against them with Spanish help; this is very common across Ottoman Greece, with either Venetian help, or Austrian help, Spanish, etc. But my point is simply the *art* history of Epirus.

Greece just absolutely smashes it as a travel destination! There’s so much interesting history, & it’s so accessible! Combine that with great climate, delicious food, lots of coastline, quite low prices - just hard to beat!
Exactly.
totally agree, these travel vids really are driving that idea home.
Low prices is definitely wrong. Greece had become one of the most expensive destinations in Europe.Except the Scandinavian countries of course.

You not only help your foreign viewers who wanna see what's out there, but you also help us Greeks appreciate all the things we take for granted and we don't really consciously think about in our every day lives. Like having a history that goes back several thousands of years, or how beautiful that church was, the art, or even just having so many options to go sit at a nice harbor with the family etc. God bless Macedonia, and God bless Greece.
Kavala is one of my favourite towns. It has it all.
The church you visited at 38:00 is the St Lydia baptistery. Lydia was the first European to be baptised Christian by the Apostle Paul. There is a stream about 50m from the church where the baptism was held.
Yes.
The first Cristians of the region were Jews who converted.
Wow you made it to my home city, wasnt expecting that. Enjoy.

Hi Gabe, it seems that you missed the spectacular museum of Phillipi. I remember that the museum had the soldiers equipment of Alexander the Great's army filled with Gold from the Middle East
Those mosaics were certainly a treat !
They are made using a special glass - Smalti - which in Europe is mainly produced in the Venice region of Italy. Smalti adorned many Byzantine churches, until the fall of Constantinople when painting became popularised during the renaissance period.
Thank you for sharing ''The Incredible Region of Northen Greece''. Kavala is a charming city with a rich history. Watching the ruins of the ancient Filippi is exciting. You are brave walking through desert grassy areas and you mind the snakes. I am grateful to you for not showing any snake.
Thank you for bringing your unique perspective to this site!
Your videos are incredible and very detailing great work, thanks for sharing!!
Hi Gabriel, glad to see you in my home village, near the baptistery of Lydia. You're too brave to climb over the hill and visit the old castle. We used to go there as kids and the paths to the top are very difficult due to dense vegetation. I hope you enjoyed your visit back in history.
Hospitality is a characteristic wherever you are in Greece!
This tourist guy would find nothing strange about Thermopolis city in Wyoming, or Demopolis city in Alabama, or about Tripoli city in Iowa, but is bewildered that Instabul is properly called Constantinoupolis LoL
Also, he'd probably have no answer if you asked him where city names like Naples, Mariupol or even Instabul itself derive from.
Gabriel thank you, your channel just takes the viewer to a place where they can escape and join you on your incredible journey! Thank you sir ❤

I have been following you for some years now. So happy to see you visiting northern Greece and being so close to my hometown (Drama, 36km north of Kavala). Hopefully, next time you will have more time to explore Macedonia and Thrace and I would be happy to provide any info or meet you in person if you decide to visit Alexandroupolis as I am currently residing in Orestiada, northern Evros, the newest and northernmost town in Greece.
Is there anything of interest in the north in Petrota and the area surrounding there ?
@@RovexHD Petrota used to be a quite big village in the early 20th century however about 200 people live there nowadays. It's famous for the zeolite minerals and there is also a stone museum with a small exhibition, mainly millstones. There are some trekking trails along the Greek-Bulgarian border close to Pentalofos and Petrota villages and a nice hotel-restaurant offering dishes based on wild animals raised nearby. The area however is not touristy at all so do not expect any serious infrastructure.
Finally you came to my home city!!

Lydia was the first European Christian, who was baptized by the Apostle Paul. On the Zygactis river, west of Philippi and at the border of the settlement of Lydia, the Holy Baptistery of Agia Lydia was built in 1972, following the inspiration of the then Metropolitan of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos, Alexander. It soon became internationally known and is a pole of attraction for believers who came for pilgrimage or for baptism from every corner of the earth. The Church dedicated to Saint Lydia, gathers the faithful to honor Lydia the Philippian Apostle on May 20 every year, performing adult baptisms in the open-air Baptistry of the Zygactis river.

Hi Gabriel, tremendous day of looking around a fascinating city with a rich history of Greek Byzantine and Ottoman fusion crossing thousands of years of engagement between the two empires. We really don't see the importance of these historical locations and keeping them intact because losing that aspect of the past will be dictated by another form of it therefore erasing knowledge of it. If you get a chance you must go to the city of Pella where Alexander, the Great was born.
I visited Pella a few years ago: ua-cam.com/video/NUnP2Uyg_R8/v-deo.html
I Think you would love going to Mount Athos
you should have tried the standard breakfast combo at Kavala: bougatsa (fillo pie with cream) with cocoa milk.. :/
I've hiked through brush like that in Greece. Very thorny. That's a rough hike in shorts.
6:40. What Turkish "influence" are you referring to? Minor Asians/Pontians selling kebab and baklava? XD
The aqueducts were built under the Roman Empire - so they are Roman, if you actually said "the kamares", meaning the aqueduct in front of you. Its clearly not a Turkish creation.
Turkia dominance is in this region 🇹🇷
@@DeputyDog-mh1yo🤡🦃🤡
@@DeputyDog-mh1yo🦃💨🦵🦵
@@DeputyDog-mh1yo The Turks reached, because of our forefathers negativity to let them off that easy, all the way to Austria - before they were pushed back to Minor Asia. Their "influence" is no more.
However it is rather negative and disrespectful of Gabriel to mention "Turkish influence" when its about Turks as well, beside not being any "influence" of anything. There are about 2-3 mosques from the Ottomans to be found in Greece, that they left (yet still not demolished by a proper right-wing government), and thats it.
Another Awesome Adventure Thank You Gabriel 🙂❤👍
