  • Hello Friends. I decided to do a small comparison of a couple fun guitars. This is not a shootout by any means. Both guitars are fun to play and have many things to offer in the way of sound. The PRS se is a budget model but it's well made and really packs a punch in sound. The SG is certain an iconic instrument and is always a treat to play. It doesn't matter what kind of instrument you chose. The thing that matters is that you enjoy playing and grab your axe as much as possible.

    PRS SE 85/15 pickups sound great humbucking or single-coil
    Push-pull tone knob accesses great single-coil-type tones

    PRS-designed SE 85/15 humbucking pickups
    The two humbucking pickups in this SE Custom 24 are Paul Reed Smith-designed SE 85/15s. An update on PRS's original humbuckers, the 85/15s are designed to sound terrific whether used in humbucking or single-coil modes. They offer you plenty of output for driving your amp hard, while sounding clear and detailed when you want. These SE humbucker closely resemble the tones of the U.S.-made versions found in the solidbody electric guitars crafted at PRS's Maryland factory.

      Hey Danny, thanks for the shout out. YEAH......I love both of these axes. The SG is super special to me. I was able to get it before the crazy price increases hit. The PRS se is also very cool. It's on the budget side of things but very functional and cool. It took me a bit of time to figure out the PRS se pickup vibe. Now I've figured out how to adjust the amp to get the most out of their sound. Over time the SG will prove to be the axe of value from a historical standpoint. People still look for old SG's and such. Yep, people will look around to get a 70's SG if they're into the vintage vibe. NO ONE is looking for a 70's HONDO. hahaha. Not an insult to Hondo. Back in the old days they were the only thing that a lot of people could afford. Thank goodness that the import quality has really gotten a lot better since those old days in the 20th century. So, rock on and be safe. Play often my friend.

      Hey Ziegfried, yeah, humbucking pickups are fun and sound good. I hope that summer is going good for you. Much very hot weather in the States. Out west is pretty hot. More than usual. The temps in Michigan are good. Very mellow. But the music is always hot. I finally got a few gigs coming up. It's going to be fun. So, rock on and keep on playing!

Both axes are fun to play and the sounds from both are very useable for a variety of different kinds of music. I need to do some clean sounds on the next bunch of demos. I get carried away in the volume sometimes. hahaha. So. keep on playing and have a magical musical vibe, always. peace.

      Hello Sir Robert and thank you so much for checking out my channel....again!. 🙂 Yeah, there are sooooo many options out there for guitar and styles. So many great guitars and amps. I wish that I could afford them all. hahaha. Well, by all means I hope that your musical year has been great. Every day is another opportunity to create, learn and enjoy. I am glad that I did the little demo because I was not sure if I liked the PRS se because the pickups were a little different. After this little play test I was convinced that I loved the PRS se. The pickups sound great. Much better than I remembered from the past. Live and learn. So, I hope that you are plucking those strings as often as possible too. There's no down side to good music. Enjoy your sonic vibes and never stop! peace.🎸

    Hi Jake, I was just thinking: the difference between children and adults is often the price (and the quantity) of toys...Anyway, as you know how to extract the best sounds from any decent axe, it's difficult to decide between these 2 beauties! Take care Jake, greetings from Strasbourg.

    • @olivierroquelle8007
      @olivierroquelle8007 Рік тому +1

      Hi all! Michel, I totally agree on your remark regarding the price and quantity of toys…and moreover, that’s why we are saying « playing » at least in English and French! 😀
      For those who are interested by a fast comparison, just my 2 cents as I am a lucky owner of that SG (same SG model than Jake _even in the same color) and I’m also since Xmas the owner of a PRS S2 custom 24: these 2 guitars are different horses.
      I want to say that in my case, the PRS sounds more polyvalent than the SG, if we have to consider the sound panel offered by the single coil split that they both have.
      To my ears, I prefer the (S2 but same than SE) sound of the Korean pickups. They are really great. As some YT videos made A/B reviews, I’m interested to buy another « toys » as the American 85/15 set can be bought on the PRS website but frankly speaking as I love the sound of my guitar I’m fearing to tweak it with bad soldering 😄. As we say in French, this upgrade will be « pur snobisme » because, frankly speaking, the stock pickups are sounding great!!
      That said, the neck of the SG is far easiest for bending (yet I’m originally a bassist, nobody’s perfect! 😄), and really enjoyable in a general way to my hands, so I’m still using my SG a lot. And you natively get that Gibson sound (even if you can approach it a lot with the S2)!
      But the PRS have this trem bar that is far better than the one from my Jaguar, and now I miss it on the SG (sic 😉).
      And just to be complete on the gap analysis, my SG unfortunately came with 3 issues: bad fretting finish (nothing really tragic but a little bit disappointing), a dead spot on the 22 fret (high e string _not a real issue for me as I can compensate it with a slight bend and I don’t approach too much this neck section, but still annoying) and an internal mechanical contact issue on the toggle switch (easily corrected on the first day).
      …when the PRS came perfectly made on any points and does not suffer any issues since months (with exception of some dings « I made » on the back 😩 due to the use of a broken guitar stand ).
      Both SG/PRS pickups have high outputs and the PRS ones have more « definition » to my ears.
      I would say the PRS is more versatile and provide more confidence when playing (that « all is under control » feeling) but the SG neck is easier to play and so more enjoyable if you want to play for hours!
      So, to conclude…I won’t conclude: they are both great toys …and you won’t be disappointed by any of both to noodle some blues! 😀🎸
      Cheers from Paris.

      Hello my friend. I am happy to hear that you are looking into buying a SG guitar. I really love the way it sounds and plays. All of the Gibson guitars get the PLEK process , so , there's never an issue with the necks. I have to say that you'll be quite impressed with this guitar if you decide that it's the one for you. So, rock on and keep the music HOT!!! peace.

      Hello BradRocker, Thanks for taking time to look at my channel. Both guitars get the job done. I am playing both through a Mesa Boogie TC-50 with a 2 x 12 recto cab that's loaded with Vintage 30's. At first I wasn't sure if I liked the PRS pickups but after this little piece of noise I am convinced that they are good sounding pickups. Keep on rocking and never stop my friend! peace.

      @MrSpencerguitar 7 місяців тому +1

      @@herculegabriel23 I tested many guitars in local guitar shops and if I compare the different PRS SE Custom 24 I played, the all sounded exactly the same.
      Each SG Modern I played sounded slightly different. These guitars have for me some kind of uniqueness or character.
      My Gibson SG Modern has a slightly different sound (or character) than Jake’s SG.
      I am not surprised, because the SE series is a cheap series of PRS, whereas the Gibson SG Modern is part of Gibson’s standard series made in the US.
