Thanks for this great video! My 11 year old son just bought one for $26 because he found that he loves typewriters after trying one at my aunt's. It's wonderful to know these functions that we otherwise may have never known.

Hi Dale, just found you and subscribed. As a former sales and repairman for Hermes typewriters, you are invaluable to the newer community of people like me. You should do some technical repair series videos exclusive for Hermes and set up a paypal tip bucket. I think you could make some money doing what you obviously have a passion for. Hope to see more from you on your channel! Thanks!

I love mine, I have a '59 Gen 1 with Pica Techno font, hahaha, yeow that took some getting used too.
Mine is a gift from my Mother for my 45th Birthday. I collect typewriters and I use them and maintain them, I write all my first drafts on typewriter, been doing this since the late '80s.
Two of my most favorite machines in my collection of 7 prescious machines, sometimes its hard to decide which to take out and work with. The Hermes usually wins but for feel touch inside and out of the body, ease of use and maintenance both these two I'd say are neck and neck Hermes type touch is unlike anything better than butter, and the only one that's right behind this baby, as it has shock absorbers in each key, is of course the 1954 Olympia SM-3 both these machines are awesome. But yes, the Hermes is absolutely in the lead.
Fun stuff on these two in my collection,
My Hermes has repair bills one from '64 and '70 for the same repair which is a bit alarming a carriage return lever...course when I tell where the bill was charged to, it for me makes sense they most have been rough.
NYPD C/O Homicide Division, and this machine just gives off vibes to write a good murder mystery. It has the rare Subsection Key, I was told these were only order by schools of law, lawyer offices, and Police Departments, as the § is needed to write Law subsection and penile codes.
The Olympia SM3 I got from Germay, (hey that rhymes) I am its first USA owner it was a floor model for the company and it has the Qwerty western keyboard, it looks like it's never been used, the back plate plaque only holds the name of the Company where all Olympia's of that era were made.
The bottom part, the part where it shows the typewriter was made for company or person, is Blank. Ive never seen that.
Most you ever see hold the 90 West St New York address for the Continental Trading Group, a company that in the '50s -'70s traded and shipped among other things primarily Tobacco.
The company is gone but the building is still there and is an apartment complex.
Wonder is some one lives there and has an Olympia SM3 or SG-1 and has their address on it lol. Crazy to think of.
Thanks for reading subscribed and be well and safe, thanks for this video, Oh and I can't even imagine how cool it must have been to be an authorized Hermes Dealer. I love the past and man I'd love to hear your record of it.
    Tha k you again, truly.

Great video! I actually picked one up at an estate sale for $12 dollars. I was planning on selling it on eBay. But it’s so much fun and my kids love it. How I wish I grew up in a era with these!!!

Thanks for a great video! I learned many things about my Hermes 3000 I did not know, and from now on I'll be able to reset the margins without consulting the manual. It's so helpful seeing how it works!

Wonderful vid! I love my Hermes 3000 (same model), it has a tactility and physicality that laptops like my MacBook Pro just don't possess for writing. A wonderful tool for just unplugging to get that raw, first pass down, unlocking the subconscious.

My mother bought this version in 1963 with the very small typeface, S 7 about 13 cpi. Was wondering how common that was in 1963...she bought it to use for billing purposes for a small business my father ran. She liked the machine a lot and never complained about the small font...it does look a tad to small for my taste.

I have a problem that the tab cancelling buttons ( - and - - -) don't cancel the tabs at all. I have the left and right tabs set ok but not the ones set with the + button.

Unfortunately, my margin marking tape broke and I would like to release the set margin from it. How is it possible? Thanks. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.

I can’t afford a Hermes unless I get lucky and find a cheap one somewhere so I use mid 1950s Remington portables instead, cheap to acquire and easy to fix.

Are parts easy to get Dale ? And how to fix paint chips ?

    • @dalehaddon591
      @dalehaddon591  Рік тому

No parts available as these machines have not been made for over 30 years. I have quite a few parts machines that I can use
for parts when needed. If you want to touch up paint chips, take a part of the housing to an auto paint store and have them match it. Hope this helps, left me know if you have any other questions about these wonderful machines. All the best, Dale

I think they were saving space. You can use the lowercase L. I just got mine tonight and am so excited!

42 key machines had 84 characters, no room for the numeral 1 so lower case L is used and no ! So period then backspace then apostrophe is used. In the 1950s 44 key machines with 88 characters started to appear and they do have the numeral 1 and ! except one of mine has pilcrow and silcrow instead of 1 and !, probably a Lawyer typewriter.
